Re: The Blessings of Simplicity

Hey Kathleen-- I thought of you as I took my walk this morning! I decided it's ok to drive somewhere new as I have lived in my neighborhood for 14 years and it is just not that exciting to me anymore. I put on a podcast and the time went very pleasantly. Well, it IS pretty compelling if you have struggled with weight. Part of what I like about this board is that people are metabolism/diet nerds who have read All the Things. I'm glad your back is better! One of the weight-loss voices is my head is the woman who wrote Lean Habits (sorry, forget her name)-- she recommends feeling hunger 30-45 minutes before a meal. I decided (seems to be the consensus) on exercise. Success for Sunday and today. I didn’t feel like it, but I called a friend and actually had a lovely walk talking to her. I have noticed some changes in my memory— it’s like things used to fall into a puddle, and now they fall into a deep dark...

One weight loss guru I follow says “weight loss is an ugly science†and I believe it. Some people lose weight readily on a moderate diet and others don’t. At times I have felt like i’m doing about all I’m willing to do, and other times I feel there is considerable room for improvement and m...

Saw middle daughter graduate today. She came out magna cum laude from a quite difficult program, and was chosen for the writing prize, so I am of course extra proud although just getting through is achievement enough. Got 86 year old mother in law to and from uneventfully. So a good day even though ...

Dang, I had this whole response and lost it! Thanks for the links. I haven't read much of this scientist and it will be fun to read more. I'm still persuaded of a link between insulin regulation and obesity-- not, I suspect, in a calorie controlled environment, but very few of us are calorie control...

Went in for a doctor visit the other day-- wanted to check my TSH due to some dry mouth and crazy heat spells at night. TSH was where it needed to be so I guess it is the perimeno fairy. Anyway, I am 10 lbs down from my highest weight, so that's something anyway. I have normal fasting sugars and my ...

LOL Oolala-- calling it "flesh" definitely makes you lean towards the plant based foods! (I just ordered chickens to keep for eggs/pets and it's unfortunate to think that is also one of my fave foods.) I do think we get a pretty thoughtful crew here on NoS and I think it's because if you've really l...

Ate well yesterday, a little off the rails today. I had to spend a morning with one of those people who manages to very quickly get across the idea that everything you do and are is wrong. I have been lucky to work with mostly lovely people, but my line of work does attract a certain subset who embr...

"Without the distraction of daily treats, I’ve been forced to tend to my life and seek out real fulfilment. "

Great reflection! I just enjoy your whole thread, it's so interesting to hear about what's going on with you & I enjoy the British (you are British?) twist.

I totally get the dialectic. I think it's worth observing what works best for you, after a reasonable period of time. If TRE as you're practicing it is taking you places you don't want to go, it makes sense to change it up. Looking forward to hearing how the new plan goes.

Have you had any luck with breaking it down into steps? Like-- no snacking after dinner, and then after you have that down, no snacking after lunch. I really believe in the hormonal basis of eating behavior and I think our systems get primed for food when we normally eat. So to cut out a snack time ...

Yeah, I have trouble seeing alternate day fasting as a lifestyle. Whatever you do to lose fat has to be sustainable, or why bother, and personally I could not groove on that, though I've read some people like it. Under the heading of unasked-for advice, have you tried resistance training? I'm convin...

Hey Kathleen-- I have just the same issue. I don't have much trouble adhering to a 16 hour period when I don't eat (half of that I'm asleep, after all!) So that's interesting, right? If I want sweets, for example, why don't I yearn for them when it's my fasting time? It has been fairly easy to do wh...

LOL Jen :) I think it's presenting a child that reminds parents of their own kid. As far as kids go, I think the change in activity has been a factor.
