One thing I learned when trying to lose weight is that while hunger is partly physical, your reaction to it is predominantly mental. My advice is this (and you're not going to like it): Go on a water-fast for two days. Not for the sake of losing weight (although you will -- at least temporarily). Bu...

Quantitative ....which means lots and lots of... but Not in any way, Evidence ....which means something that furnishes truth. Not to be overly pedantic, but "quantitative" just means measurable , not that there is a lot of something. As far as whether it's evidence of any sort, you might be right.

well, you're in a tough position. If you think he can be reasoned with then it should be pretty easy, because the odds of an adult woman, walking in a well-populated area, in the daytime (or even at night), being abducted by a stranger are vanishingly small. I would say it's essentially zero. You wo...

Wow... Kidnapped? Seriously? The good thing is you're an adult and you don't need your husband's permission to take a walk. If you wanted to ease his mind, maybe you could find a friend in the neighborhood to go on walks with. If he's worried about your safety, you're much more likely to die in a ca...

It's either one of two things: - The stomach thing is completely unrelated. - Your body is adjusting to eating three meals a day after possibly years of not doing so. If you go off heroin your body will make you sick for a little while too, but that doesn't mean you shouldn't quit heroin. Obviously ...

Hello Reitschule, I appreciate what you wrote and agree with you. When I quoted myself I took what I wrote out of context, the paragraph that preceded it was: We all know that to lose weight you need to expend more energy (in the form of calories) than you take in. With that knowledge you're all set...

Bushranger once wrote me saying,"Maybe less yacking on the internet and more real work will sort your fat ass out." Perhaps this was some of the good-natured ribbing that was supposed to help motivate me. However, having lost 60+ pounds and steadily approaching my goal, I just found his comments kin...

Oh, I don't do it anymore. I did it for about 3 weeks, it was an interesting experiment. Polyphasic sleeping is to sleeping what fad dieting is to dieting. It can be interesting and perhaps even helpful in the short term, but in the long run it's unsustainable and anti-social. I did a little more re...

You state the body does not know the difference between 6 hours sleep at one time slot vs the same 6 hours at another time slot. I say there is a difference and that the body knows this difference, even when they are both in the "night" hours. Science agrees with me. I've done a lot of sleep resear...

Deadweight, I'm curious. Why do you say it's an old wives tale? For me I definitely *don't* feel rested if I go to sleep after 12. Hey Deb, sorry I missed this question. I say it's an old wives tale because the saying was coined by the English novelist Henry Fielding (the guy who wrote Tom Jones). ...

Sadly, this is just an old wives tale.

But oh how I wish this really were a "fact." I would just go sleep from 10PM to Midnight everyday and that would be my 8 hours of sleep right there.

Marianna, A couple things. First, I'm of the opinion that your weight when you're on a low-carb diet isn't really your weight, anymore than the measurement of your waistline when you're sucking in your gut is the measure of your real waistline. There's a reason why high-school wrestlers will move to...

babyprrr - Are you in the US? I eat a ton of cereal and have never found one that didn't give an amount in grams and cups. However, if you do have a scale I find it much easier to just put your bowl on the scale, zero the scale, then pour the cereal in. It's actually one less step and one less dirty...

That sounds reasonable to me. I think the important thing is that you come up with a structure you're happy with beforehand, and then you stick to it. You won't be doing NoS, but you'll be exercising your habit building skills which is what NoS is all about. And you lost 8 pounds in a month last yea...

Contrary to what's being said here, I've always found the idea of calorie counting to be very freeing. It's perfectly logical. In order to control the amount of stored energy on your body (fat) you control the amount of energy you take in (in calories). If you want to drink 1200 calories of beer a d...

A No-S Diet mental Plug-In

I had an idea for a diet the other day that I wrote about on my blog. It's a very simple concept. I think it's something that could be incorporated in N and S days and help those people who have trouble overloading their plates during the week and overloading themselves during the weekend.

Yes, ultimately it's all semantics as the words can be used synonymously. Eating fruits and vegetables, whole grains, and lean meats can be considered a diet. Eating a vat of Crisco with chocolate sprinkles on top can be considered a lifestyle. Personally I don't mind the word "diet" and find that "...

Hello, long-time lurker, first-time poster. I'm a huge fan of the No-S diet. It's a simple, straightforward plan that lacks the BS of many other diets. I couldn't let these two post pass without comment though. In regards to Reinhard's initial post, the study tells us nothing other than that fat peo...
