Oh, this is great, Shannon, thanks! I don't have a sledgehammer yet. I think I'll start out with a mop or broom as others suggest until I can get the moves down.

Shannon, do you mind telling what your routine is? I'm not really sure where to start. I already have a simple dumbbell routine but it takes me 20-30 minutes. The 14-minute shovelglove routine is very intriguing. I don't have much time after work (that I'm willing to give to a set amount of exercise...

I wanted to start walking outdoors but you can't do it in Texas in the summer. Especially in the city. With the heat index over 100 for most of the summer and it doesn't even drop below 90 until after 9:00 or 10:00 pm combined with the air pollution of a big city when they warn you to stay indoors, ...

Great stuff here! That IS a good concept of leaving a couple bites of food. I started plateauing before I began No S less than a month ago and I still am. I realized I needed to up my exercise quotient. I hate that I'm stuck behind a desk all day at work and that most of the time I have to take the ...

Um, you are probably right that coal miners, farmers and others like them most likely didn't stretch, lol! I googled the debate on the merits of stretching and there isn't a consensus. I'm like you, I prefer not to do it if I don't really need to mostly due to time constraints. And perhaps a touch o...

He only eats twice a day though so I think he can have a little leeway on the whole seconds thing (I just have to make sure I'm not tempted to join him!) :) He thinks I eat too often (4 x per day) I think he should eat breakfast, it's an ongoing debate in our house  My hubby only eats two meal...

I like fast and convenient, too, during the work week. I'll generally have cereal with milk and add some sort of fruit like a banana or blueberries. Or alongside the cereal if I don't have the first two fruits I may eat half a red grapefruit, strawberries or peaches. All these fruits (except the ban...

shamrockmommy, just because there are other families going through the same thing doesn't invalidate your feelings. Im so sorry! I know it's hard because my sister in Ohio is going through the same thing. Her husband is in Afghanistan and had two prior tours in Iraq. She does have help from her two ...

I did not realize how frequently I resorted to quick-to-fix foods that came from a box or a can. Me neither! And even though my weight was doing well, my cholesterol and triglycerides weren't. After switching to less processed food, not only did I continue doing well with weight, the blood work imp...

14 minutes is really appealing to me. Right now it takes me about half an hour working with 8 lbs dumbbells plus 10-15 minutes of stretching. I have a simple routine of lunges, calf exercises and then using the weights I work my arms, back and chest muscles. I do this only twice a week but even then...

Good, sensible post! I kind of did the same thing last night as far as getting rid of stuff in the pantry that I'm better off without. There's a bunch of snack food in there but it's for my husband and stepkids. Most of the time it doesn't tempt me. I usually get tempted when I haven't eaten enough ...

Hubby needs to lose a few which I worry about because of his health but I don't nag him about it. Like someone said, a person has to be ready and "own" it. But I love that No S means we can eat the same things. We were both sorta doing a moderate low carb about a year ago but that's not easy. I love...

My first weekend in (this past one) looked like my regular days before No S. In other words, small meals plus several snacks. I think I did okay. I can't ever stuff myself, thank goodness. It just doesn't feel good and no matter how good the food tastes, just isn't worth it. Except that for lunch on...

Not condoning the obsession but my impression is that they're healthy in spite of it. At least they (as far as we can tell) eat real foods and don't go on crazy diets. There's some lessons in there somewhere!

wosnes, that's true, processed food consumption shot up in those years. And thanks for that website, I didn't know it existed. Concerning what Betty wrote, that may be true that French women are obsessed with being thin but I did take away some good points from the book, namely that the more wholeso...

Fantastic post! I've read the book "French Women Don't Get Fat" by Mireille Guiliano and she writes of much the same things. Years ago I tried the low fat and nonfat foods and I just didn't like them. And you know that they have things like extra sugar and/or artificial flavorings just to make them ...

Re: beverages are ok too

No worries--after a while you'll get a sense of how much you need to eat in order to keep you from wanting to eat your arm before the next meal! It's all about retraining your brain (and your eyes) about what you "need" and what you've been used to. Remember that beverages are ok for the most part ...

Thanks SR! I hadn't thought about that before regarding hunger. The motive for near constant snacking is exactly the opposite, to not feel hunger at all. That was my goal, to have enough snacks nearby or in my purse that I could pop a few bites in my mouth the moment just before my stomach was due t...

Hi drscottie, is it okay if I hijack your newbie thread? I'm a newbie, too! I started gaining weight about 7 years ago, a combination I think of middle age, a very sedentary job and no exercise. I reached my limit back in January as my weight inched ever higher and my clothes were getting tig...
