A bit TMI, but I do. Sometimes I confuse being nervous with feeling like I have to pee.

Thanks for the follow up

So glad for you. And also glad to see others' responses, or at least the encouraging ones. In case this is helpful to others: the resources I'm most grateful for are the Impatient Woman's Guide to Getting Pregnant, which gives updated stats for chances of pregnancy over age 35 and says that stress d...

Being tired can cause overeating

Don't be too hard on yourself. Remember that being tired increases overeating as well. Having the stress and fatigue from the trip may have been the problem rather than it just being an S day. Many times when I overeat, it's really because I'm tired, either from lack of sleep or a trying day.

Congrats with your >21 days of success. That's fantastic. It may be that you would feel healthier and lose weight if you experimented with your "intelligent defaults". I've experimented for years with the foods that are best with me, and I have learned through painful experience that I need to be co...

I have food allergies, and I am often unable to eat the food at any events. I also keep kosher, so I'm effectively vegetarian out of the house. Two sides to not eating while others are: 1. My feelings: I've gotten really used to seeing food that I can't eat as an object, rather than as edible. I'm d...

My understanding of exercise science (from reading boards like t-nation and Alwyn Cosgrove's blog and books) is that there are multiple paths to fitness depending on your goals. High-intensity interval training (HIIT), including Shovelglove and the Tabata method, is highly effective at burning calor...

Any kind of meat, with or without fat. I've been reading lately about meat fat and how it's healthy --- I know that sounds like I've just said that gravity makes things fall up. It turns out there is actually little evidence that it's unhealthy, and that's been accepted as dogma. I wouldn't go overb...

Cantab's daily check in

After a good transitional month into No-S, even with the holidays and a cold, I hit a rough spot this week that I learned from. But first, good news: Habit Cal has done fantastic things for my exercise pattern. I've exercised 10 of the last 15 days, and some days really extensively. Hurrah! And anot...

Re: Guilt!

Everyone's psychology is different. Personally I found it so freeing to be able to eat normal less healthy food occasionally, as long as it's in moderation. The lesson is moderation, not perfection. Perfection is in some senses the enemy because it can lead to immoderate behavior. I want to tell you...

I agree with all of you. It sets up an unrealistic standard. I can't believe how many people on Sparkpeople say things like "I've only lost 10 pounds this month". It can be inspiring to some people, though. A friend decided to make weight loss her full time job after losing hers, and did a similar 4...

One month check-in

I've been doing No-S for a month, and it's been a good one, though with lots of exemptions due to illness and travel: 15 green days, 1 red day, and 15 yellow days. The yellow days were designated S days retrospectively, and mostly resulted from eating sweets and baking cookies on holiday break. But ...

I'm sorry about your accident, and I hope you have a complete and total recovery. Others have addressed your immediate question. On the question of vitamins, you might consider omega-3's. Seth Roberts has a lot on his website about how they help his reaction time and cognitive abilities. http://www....

I weigh without clothes first thing in the morning after going to the bathroom, before consuming anything. It makes me better to see the lower numbers. The numbers I see at the doctor's office are something like 10 pounds more than my scale weight at home because of shoes and consumed food/water.

Thanks for the habit cal. It's extremely motivating, especially for exercise. I just like seeing the green squares lining up. Can you please add 2010 to the menu, so we can start using it for January 2010?

Background on me: 33, 5'2", weighed 128-132 for most of the 13 years I was in college and grad school in bicycle- and pedestrian-oriented cities. For a couple brief years, I weighed 122-125, and it was glorious, but I had been overly restrictive, so I was extremely anxious eating out. I moved to a c...

Flavorless calories on the No S diet to reduce appetite

In order to reduce my appetite so that I am less interested in the S's, I am having a few hundred flavorless calories with a no-flavor window around it, an idea invented by Berkeley psychology professor Seth Roberts. In practice, first thing in the morning, I put on swimmer's noseplugs and drink a m...
