One of the things I discovered a long time ago is that a lot of the "naturally slim" people I know personally are very unhealthy. The main reason they remain thin is that they have lousy digestive systems and can't enjoy eating nearly as much as I do. I must confess that even today when I see someo...

Obesity in France

There is a perception that everyone in France is thin. I see it on this board, in fact. A book just came out in France, by a French woman who is obese. The NY Times did a story about it: https://www.nytimes.com/2017/10/21/world/europe/gabrielle-deydier-france-obesity-on-ne-nait-pas-grosse.html The w...

Re: snacking

I'm still really struggling with not snacking. It seems like all I'm doing is thinking about food. When will that go away, and when will I not be hungry between meals . I'm eating enought, but still...the snacking... It's normal to be hungry between meals. Seriously. "Hunger is the best sauce", the...

What do you mean by "carbs"? I never understand what people are talking about when they say "carbs". Carbohydrates are one of the 3 macronutrients and despite dietary propaganda, carbohydrates are not "evil". There's a big difference between cake made with white sugar and flour, and beans. I've read...

Regarding Germany--I have spent a lot of time there. In 1984 I went to a German language school in Munich and stayed with a local woman. We are still friends and I've visited her many times. Here's what I saw--she lives in an apartment, as do the vast majority of people in Munich unless they are fab...

Larkspur's post is very insightful, I think. It sounds like your sisters inadvertently tweaked you in a sensitive spot--one they didn't know was sensitive. However, I do have to say that unasked-for dietary advice is a big no-no in my book. Also ... I don't know how tall you are or how big or small ...

I lived in Munich in 1984 and can affirm TexArk's experiences and have been back to visit there many times. I have mixed feelings about this book. I do think her recommendations can be pretty sane. That is, 3 meals, no snacking, limit portions, and really enjoy what you eat . However, she does mention this "leek soup" 3 day crash diet that she got from "Dr. Miracle". She may not call it a crash diet but t...

I've worked pretty hard on nailing down the No S habits, especially no snacking. I don't snack on S days, and I generally have one sweet per S day--usually a really nice pastry or baked good for breakfast on weekends. And if I want a latte made with whole milk during an S day, I'll have one.

People who live in slim cultures would get fat on our restaurant food all the time, too, even if it fit on a plate. Exactly, which is a good reason not to go out to eat very often. The vast majority of the time DH and I go out, we take about the half the food home with us. Restaurant portions in th...

Interesting realization

So, DH and I went downtown yesterday to go to the main library and to have lunch at a pub next to the library. I think I'll enjoy the structure of eating only three plat...

It's true that "French women don't get fat" but, well, we were eating that way in the US up until sometime in the late 70s. I vote "really hard", not "impossible". Don't let the language you use shape your thoughts. I do get that some ...

Very sane way of eating

Howdy, everyone. I stumbled across a mention of Reinhard's book on some other forum, so I bought a copy about a month and a half ago. I read it and it makes total sense to me. I adopted the method. Although I already had very good eating habits, No S has helped me refine them even more. I'm not over...
