Mitchell, the practice of moms giving food as love is pretty common. It's a practice in many cultures. (I'm a little surprised my mom DIDN'T do it. But she actually wasn't much of a cook. My dad liked to make dinner. I don't remember my mother EVER making cookies, from scratch or not. )

Did you mean Judith Beck? Martha's the one who snuck massive amounts of sweets and snacks into a diet center for a group of people she was working with there. Well, I forget how she was associated but she wasn't in the center. It's easier to obey the lower brain because it's on a survival pr...

I had my thinking turned around. Agreed, Merry.

I suspect that most people's eating also inched up after each holiday and the body upped its set point. Normally, the body will want to bring things back to equilibrium.

In any case, Vanilla and SOMETIMES.

Not to mention that the "lower" brain can come up with all sorts of thought streams to get us to eat. It's not being dastardly about it. It's like a computer. "Eating has reduced. Danger! Danger! Must save organism. Produce sensations and thoughts to get food. Make life very uncomfortable." Prefront...

Uh, I'm going to take credit, though I might be wrong you got it from me. But I am very fond of saying it because I finally saw that it was true and it has made a difference so many times. I realize it's a version of one of Beck's "mantras, " as I call them. "I'll be happier if I just stick to my pl...

I don't like my job (have a semester's leave now!) but it was very supportive on No S for years. I'm not sure how I would have done without it. I brought my lunch and kept a panini grill there because I love hot food but not microwaves, except for boiling water or heating coffee. I think I'll do oka...

That sounds rather reasonable, given that we older folks often have a drop in appetite. I know I've had days on which my appetite needed only one good meal. But being on Vanilla has felt better, though I'm doing a seasonal adaptation right now.

Sorry to hijack, Kathryn!

I've thought of visiting family in Lynn and asking Reinhard to lunch, though not for oatmeal. I figured he might do it because I would then be gone and not start stalking him. I've always admired that he didn't try to turn this into an empire, though honestly, I sometime wish he would.

I'm with you, GP, although there are some people who do better with eating even less often that the common meal structure, there aren't whole societies who live that way, and one of the main thoughts that helped me when I started was that there was so much proof that it was a viable way to live. The researcher who talked about the phenomenon said it happens because each generation had built on the baseline. It's a rather natural progression, since humans are wired to seek sweet, but one that needs conscious curtailing, since it's so darn available. I wrote this on some thread but it's so as...

That amount of walking would take me a little over an hour and a half! Does it count walking around the house or shopping, etc.? The gauge I just looked at said it was over 10,000 steps. What a great year, Noni! I'd be very surprised if all of those 6 lbs. hung around long. It's just not possible that in that time you overate by 21,000 calories. Got to be mostly water from salt/sugar/carbs in general.

Warmest wishes for the new year.

Hi, Kathleen, I took the liberty of doing a quick average of your recorded weight in December. The five days not recorded would likely have made only a small difference. It rounded to 220. 8. Given that it was a holiday month and the trend was downwards toward the end, your prognosis for loss in Jan...

Sometimes the scale feedback can be sobering and useful. I'm glad you didn't use it to run to food, as paradoxically that often happens. There are all kinds of reasons weight loss doesn't often proceed in a linear or truly predictable way. That's why days on habit it such a great metric. Besides, it...
