All the time I've been doing No S, I've had a general sense in my mind that what I'm really trying to figure out is how much dense food I really need at my meals to feel content after eating them and hungry an hour or two before them. If I had an autoimmune disease, I would consider it because I've seen incredible changes in a friend who adopted it, but there are just too many cultures who don't eat Paleo that don't seem to have widespread degenerative diseases to use it as a weight loss program. Just because people lose weight o...

Wanted to add that Satter recommens the sit-down snacks and meals for toddlers, too. As stated above, parents choose the food and offer it at relatively set times. The child chooses how much or whether to eat at all at those times. If it's mealtime and the child chooses not to eat, Satter recommends...

I love No S, but I'm not sure you can follow Vanilla. If you are in such dire straits, I believe you should ask for a nutritional consult and follow the recommendations. If you can do that on three meals a day, wonderful. I'm not sure you can allow yourself free rein on weekends. You just have too m...

Sorry, I read it in a magazine in a store and didn't buy. I hate to report that one was Paleo eating (I hate to report just because it is so restrictive and that flies in the face of what most research says will be sustainable. Mind you, they survey didn't cover a long time to prove the claim that r...

A "health food" proponent back in the '80's was famous for saying you should wait to eat until you had "the keenest desire for the plainest food." None of us will get to that if we eat too much too often. It really seems a shame because if there is anyone who should be able to fill the time between ...

Okay, girl, I have to ask. WHY are you baking in the afternoon on an N day?
Whatever reasons come up are just the habit and sugar talking. Not rational!

I second the idea of aiming for a shorter exercise bout to start, at least. Get up 15 minutes earlier for 10 minutes of exercise. Or what about right after dinner? Don't know what your weather is like, but a 10-minute brisk walk can help liven the evening.

the new Jenny

Anyone see the ad for the new Jenny Craig program? Five days a week of her food and two days a week of "your healthy choices." Hmmm... Consumer Reports did a spread on weight loss plans. I think none of the programs reviewed had a higher success rate for reaching goal than 20%. The weight losses in ...

After all that, had relatively big yet guilt-free fail today. I could blame it on a bunch of things but bottom line is I ate a ton of sugar today and other food, all at odd hours. It's 4:15 p.m. I'll see how I feel at my regular dinner time. May elect to wait until later, have a very light meal, or ...

Remember that the French, who eat three meals and who eat smaller portions, still typically have one meal that will include soup, a meat, a vegetable, a salad, bread, cheese, and fruit. There might also be a starch.

And one more thing: most people in France and Italy (mostly 3-meal a day-ers and the lowest BMI averages in Europe) don't know how much they weigh. But they know when they've had enough food. And they don't snack.

Ah, the very human, very common what-the-hell effect. And the other common habit, self-flagellation. This is different from reasonable guilt that helps you really make changes. Self-beratement is actually part of the overeating cycle, and therefore will reinforce the whole thing. That is why here at...
