I'm actually surprised I've not had more red days since starting NoS! My suggestion for the late afternoon crash would be protein and/or fat with your lunch. I've followed Fuhrman (and Ornish and McDougall) and found that when I added fat, including animal fats, back into my diet, I didn't feel a need to snack. Also, I felt better than I did when I severely restricted...

Just start by eating a reasonable amount at meals and see what happens. Remember this: there's nothing wrong with being hungry. We've been taught to eat every time we feel hunger. That's very unusual and we can see where it got us -- overweight. This is from Mark Bittman's book Food Matters : There'...

Kevin, you're right...the carb content is an intriguing aspect. As much respect as I have for the low carb world, it's the one part that never added up for me. France, Italy, Japan. Couldn't be carbier. The three philosophies that have always captured my imagination are Low Carb, No S, and Intuitiv...

Also noteworthy - neither of these cultures do one-plate meals. Instead, they have several courses, lingered over. Reading the comments on the article about French dietary habits, over and over again, French women mentioned smoking, which I certainly saw when I was in France. I too used to find sta...

Ain't nuttin' in the world that'll clean up your habits like worrying about what kind of example you're setting your children, is there? (I had a similar revelation about 12 years ago when I taught myself to eat cooked vegetables because I wanted my kids to be veggie eaters). Reminds me of a quote ...

Nicest of the Damned, my Grandmother was alive in the Depression. She was a big believer in the 'clean plate' - eating every morsel of food on your plate. We were praised if we had a clean plate, and only then would we get dessert. My mom is a big believer in the 'clean plate', as well. I got told ...

Devil's Diet
I saw this on a blog. Isn't it true? I don't know who to credit it to, because of the two places I saw it, no one gives a source.

and it seems like you'd need a good five or six numbers to describe all the different permutations of torso, waist, hips, legs, etc. that make up the wonderful variety of womankind. I've decided that the sheer complication is actually why *they* distilled it all down to a single effectively meaning...

The restaurant that I mentioned above -- they even make their own bacon. It's very good. They make a few things, the bacon being one, that I wish they would sell in their restaurant. I think the market opportunity lies not with NSA, but with not using processed foods, since 75% of the sodium in our ...

I long for the day when actresses can be the size of Vince Vaughn or Jon Favreau and have their weight not be a part of the storyline. To even get a small part, you must be ridiculously thin. By and large that's true, but then there are people like Conchata Ferrell and Kathy Bates, to name two. I k...

I live in a very small apartment now, but it does have a decent kitchen. I have stove, refrigerator, sink and dishwasher -- the basics. There's not an overabundance of counter space, but enough to do what's necessary. I don't have a pantry. Oddly enough, I don't miss having one. My stand mixer is in...

I agree with what everyone else has said: you will adjust to this over time. Like others, I routinely go 5-6 hours or longer between meals without difficulty. In fact, many days I only have two meals. I understand not wanting to stuff yourself, but make sure you're eating enough at meals. If you're ...

Unfortunately, most people don't take their restrictions seriously enough to do anything about it. I've worked with patients who have varying dietary restrictions for over 20 years. Many don't even try. If I had a nickel for every patient who followed their restrictions -- well, I wouldn't have very...

In The Omnivore's Dilemma Michael Pollan wrote that industrialized farming, both meat and plants, is relatively new and still not in common practice throughout the world. Farming in many other places is organic, whether or not it's called "organic." I know that in parts of Europe (France, Italy and ...

There are so many problems with processed foods it's difficult to know where to start. Because I just saw something about this on the news, one could start with added sugar. Yes, one of the first few comments pointed out that both "camps" in the little vignette had that in common: They did NOT eat processed junk. I thought that was one of the best points made. That's one of the things I noticed about the various traditional diets. They don't tend to have problems until...

This comment is so true: "Only wealthy westerners can afford to choose either diet and still be healthy. Everyone else in the world eats what’s available and don’t have the resources to join these self-righteous 'diet camps.'" "Wealthy" is relative. Many of our poorest are wealthy compared to ot...
