I'm just old enough to have grown up in a time where breakfast was cooked every morning at home and pancakes weren't saved for weekends. Few people had weight issues. I'll have to admit that I rarely make pancakes on weekday mornings, but it's because they're time-consuming to make (and also because...

I was just looking at the subject lines of the posts. When I read this one, I think THE answer to the question came to mind. Any time you go "on" a diet, there's an implication that at some point in time you're going to go "off" the diet. Since many diets, especially "crash" diets, don't teach you h...

We have a really good farmer's market here in Dallas, and I love to go there and get different foods in season. I'm especially a big fan of corn on the cob (which I like to grill, with butter and lime) and strawberries. I need to get my mom to teach me her stew recipe. She makes the best beef stew ...

My modification with No S is I do allow myself a small portion of dessert each day. I've been allowing myself a handful of cookies daily -- but just recently not so much. I usually have them either mid-afternoon or after dinner, but lately I've been finding that in mid-afternoon they ruin my appeti...

I don't recall having had cravings like that when it was still an issue. But my daughter does. She has been doing her own thing diet-wise since August and lost about 50 pounds to date. Pancakes for breakfast are perfectly okay. So is syrup, especially if you don't drown the pancakes in syrup.

As for the night time snacking, I'm afraid I'm of no help. It's not that I've never done it, but it's not something I've done all the time.

I've seen both Volumetrics and Picture Perfect Weight Loss and I think they're both good and certainly compatible with No-S. Another good book I read was "Good Calories, Bad Calories" by Gary Taubes. I don't think low carb is really the best for everyone, but it DOES puncture the myth of "low fats diets" and points out how dangerous too much sugar can be. It's not a diet book, but rather a kind of expose about how we've ...

I don't think taking a break from No-S is a good idea. However, I also don't think it should be so rigid that you can't adapt to variations in your schedule. I think it's physical and psychological, too. When you're undernourished you crave what you're deprived of. When you're able to get those things, you overfeed -- maybe in part so that your body/soul won't be deprived the next time you're underfed.

I suspect that the reason the eating habits went to hell is that they just weren't ingrained enough. Think about it. I don't think this applies to just "crash" diets, but most diets. Extremely few people can stick to a diet until they lose the weight, even fewer stick to it after they've lost the weight. The truth is, pretty much any diet will lose you weight if you stick with it. The problem isn't how to lose the...

Re: new and have questions

I haven't finished reading the book but have a couple of questions that I can't seem to find answered. 1. Each meal is one plate. What if a tossed salad or soup is part of the meal? Obviously you can't have soup on your plate. Or does this count as a multi course meal and then not on program? 2. Wh...
