I believe the Army has a version on toast "SOS". Be very glad food has moved on! Or maybe it was my mom's cooking.... I've never tried the pasta with peas because I can't stand canned peas. But I think the liquid in the peas adds some flavor to the mix -- those who tried it with fresh or frozen pea...

Clara's Kitchen

Clara's Kitchen was released today. I pre-ordered a copy from Amazon and received it today. This is Clara from the Depression Era Recipes thread here. There are many more new recipes from Clara and much wisdom -- kitchen and otherwise. I'm currently reading the chapter about bread. In it Clara says...

No S as it is described in the 14 words, without any modifications. "Plain ol' vanilla", you know. Only 13 words on the cover of the book though: No Snacks. No Sweets. No Seconds.* *Except on days that start with S. I read the book before I came to this forum. Perhaps that's why I have been unable ...

I've yet to buy this book and try the bread. I'm also interested in this one: My Bread: The Revolutionary No-Work, No-Knead Method by Jim Lahey. His recipe, which Mark Bittman wrote about in the New York Times and Jeffrey Steingarten wrote about in the May, 2007 issue of Vogue, is the one that proba...

I allow myself more than one plate (or bowl), but it's always soup or salad on the extra plate. I also don't drink the liquids between meals, but if I need to snack, it's always fruit or vegetables.

You can certainly have milk and/or juice at meals. If you're hungry between meals, you can have a glass of milk or juice to keep the hunger at bay until the next meal. By the way, just for clarification, it's no sweets, not no sugar. If it's something that you think of as dessert, it's off limits un...

I think it would include the one-plate rule and only juice or milk between meals if needed for hunger.

I should explain my reasoning for getting rid of the regular S days. The very short version of this is that I'm eating things on weekends that I don't particularly want just because it's the weekend and I can. The other part is that I'm missing things I want on weekdays just because it's a weekday a...

Re: Some mods

1) Weekends are NOT special days. I really need structure on weekends or they become permasnack. 2) Everyday I am allowed a single "S", either snack or sweet. By single, I mean a (small) single measured portion size. 3) Fresh plain fruits/vegs are allowed as a snack if I'm really hungry . 4) I've a...

Instead, I'm going to take S days as they come. I d...

Ultimately, I think No-S is about moderation, being sensible and going back to something that resembles the way people used to eat (before everyone had problems with weight and health). If vanilla doesn't work for you, no problem. Just find something that does work for you.

I think wosnes pointed out in another thread that it has to be your routine, or you'll never make it a routine. However, we can all agree that part of the reason No-S helps you lose weight is because you are limiting your opportunities to eat, and those opportunities correspond with social norms, c...

I don't think I've ever stuck to vanilla No-S. Initially it was because I didn't realize there was a one plate rule.
