Rice

I'm a big fan of Martha Rose Shulman's "Recipes for Health" column on The New York Times web site. This week her focus is on rice, and I learned something I didn't know: Rice is a thoroughly sustaining food. According to Jeffrey Alford and Naomi Duguid in "Seductions of Rice," a beautiful, well rese...

I started having problems with heartburn/acid reflux out of the blue about a year ago. I found that it was highly associated with the quality of the food I eat, though I do have some issues with dairy products. I found that drinking a glass of water (can be a rather small glass) within 30 minutes fo...

About "S events": To me, S days are Saturday, Sunday and religious or national holidays. S events are occasions -- events or celebrations where I want to indulge, but not a whole day of indulging. Well, take first things first. Don't worry about the S days until you've got the N days under control. I've been doing this nearly 3 years, and I'd guess that it took me a good year not to overdo or want to overdo on every S day. Now the majority of my S days look a lot like my N days with the excep...

I started to loose it when I finally got to 21. I got a grip quick though. I think a habit takes more like 30 or more and you have to keep in mind how you react to those S days. If you think of them as being "off" the diet, then you must be thinking that you have to go back "on" again on Monday, th...

About new habits... We got a dog 5/4. She's about a year old, a rescue. It's my duty to walk her every morning, because I'm the one with the least responsibilities in the morning -- and I need the walk, too. This should be habit by now. It's not -- even with the dog at my ankles! It's kind of a "Oh!...

I think for a lot of people, worrying so much about food quality and "real" food is seen as a form of snobbery, and vaguely un-American. It's a sad indictment against society that it's not frowned upon more than it is. I think we're assuming that more people know about this than probably actually do.
