"I wonder what would happen if I just accepted the fact that they fight a lot and focus on my response to that." This in a nutshell expresses a whole school of therapy called cognitive therapy -- it lends itself to self-help and dealing with what is. It goes something like this: "All kids bicker som...

Sounds like a great combination for a strong-flavored vegetable like kale, noni. It's so good for you, I am always happy to have a new recipe for it!

I read chani's post first ^ and thought she was recommending an affirmation for you! Then I saw she was quoting you and thought, yay, auto!

Seriously, unless you are interviewing for modeling jobs, why do you need to be considered thin? when you look great and feel great?

Linda, when you feel up to it, post your minestrone to the Soup 2014 thread on the main page. It's turning into a nice little collection! Love how we all inspire each other here -- right down to the can of coconut milk!

Your life seems to be finding a new level of order, auto! I don't have much to add about anxiety -- the only thing I have ever done is ask myself, what's the problem right this minute -- and I usually find I am fretting about something that's over and done or about something that might happen, neith...

I make curries that way, chani -- delicious! I buy the Indian spices mail order -- coconut milk is available only at Wal-Mart in this rural area and I don't patronize them unless it's absolutely necessary. I'll have to look into another source!

I am a huge fan of pumpkin soup, finallyfull! Thanks for adding it to the cookbook! I am starting a scratch soup today (what's in the fridge -- let's turn it into soup). It involves a head of cauliflower and some chicken parts so far and may eventually include peas. If it turns out well, I'll post i...

I finally dared to weigh after the holidays: up three pounds. Not the end of the world -- but it tells me I am walking a fine line with No S and my indulgences had better be pretty rare if I don't want to reverse all the gains I made over the last six months. I skittered around for about two weeks -...

I think that's the answer, oolala -- I just don't have enough bones! Turkey for one is usually just a breast and I only eat it once or twice a year, so I don't bother trying to save the bones.

And I agree, lentil soup always tastes good and doesn't need much in the way of flavorings.

Hang in there, Linda. It's a little like driving on ice -- you steer into the skid, completely counterintuitive. Acknowledge that you have options, maybe even allow a minor infraction once in a while, but maintain overall direction (moderation) even if it's not perfection.

Hope your weekend is fun!

Oh dear! what can I say? vegetable-innuendo transcends language and culture? You, too, can join in! Look for soup base, auto -- it's a paste that comes in beef, chicken and ham flavors in squat 16 oz jars. It's the fix-it for soups that are a little watery -- gives good, strong flavor, better than b...

That's hilarious! I used to teach in Boston's Chinatown and the women there engaged in similar language hijinks with bananas . . . And actually, the eggplant in the Chinese markets was as you describe, paler purple, longer and thinner. Did you live in Iran, oolala? I've known some delightful Iranian...

"As I carved myself a small piece of lemon pie (didn't finish) and had a small cookie with my coffee, they started to sneak a cookie here and there after they said no." One said no, the other felt she should say no as well, then you took pie and cookie, giving them both permission to rethink the mat...

Not smug at all, oolala -- I also loved refried beans from the can! And there are Indian packet meals I buy online that are fantastic, much better than what I could produce with the limited rural PA ingredient palette. But I love to cook, and most days I manage it. And I live in an area that conside...

Love quark and don't much like cottage cheese -- both texture and flavor of quark are different, like one big, creamy curd that has a denser texture than yoghurt. In fact the closest thing to it in the US is to drain off liquid from yoghurt overnight, leaving a kind of cheese. I miss quark!

Are you afraid you are overdoing No S, auto? It's creeping into every aspect of your life -- which I think is cool. But it sounds like you think you may OD on it and then totally drop it? It doesn't have to be intense -- it has to be moderate! Don't overthink it!

LOL, 4islandgirls, my mother -- who really was and is quite overweight -- used to look for people on the beach who were fatter than she was and then put our towels down near them, so she would look slimmer in comparison. Anoulie, I misunderstood -- I thought I remembered that you still had 110-115 as goal weight. I am glad you have revised that. Mostly I just wrote to say that I am glad you are going to talk to someone in real life about things and to add my best wishes to the others!

Anoulie, when I was 15 I had no hips and no breasts -- when I was 16 my hips appeared (my breasts took about 4 more years!) and I suddenly had the illusion I was fat. Don't you think at least some of the weight that caused you to look for a diet may just have been what happens in the early to mid-te...

Yay! Now, some math -- a pound of lentils costs $1.79, add a carrot, an onion, a potato and some seasonings and you will have enough thick lentil soup for 5-6 lunches (three hefty ladles full per serving). An added incentive to learning to make lentil soup -- you can use the $$ you would have spent ...
