No S and religious observances

Lent is upon us and I've been contemplating fasting this year. After giving the matter some thought but admittedly not much prayer, I've settled upon fasting sweets on Sundays. Part of me feels like I am cheating - I should just fast sweets. Period. But there is something deep within me that resists...

Most people who move S days do so for some other reason than wanting a break from the structure. The most common reasons are a standing appointment during the week where S's are involved and work schedules. Maybe this is a good time to start re-scripting your internal dialogue about your attachment ...

You would probably need to directly implement some tweaks and mods. Depending on how far afield your current eating is from these mods, that may or may not be sustainable. And No S might become another diet focused on weight loss instead of habit builder that results in weight management.

You made it through the holidays without gaining. Congrats! No S is the only diet that starts off with maintenance. As you internalize the habits, you can start making mods to start weight loss. Plus, there is always adding exercise. Take this is a sign that any weight you do take off with No S will...

I think getting outside helps me. We've had a milder than normal winter and I haven't been taking advantage of it. Not surprisingly, I'm getting sloppy w/ No S. I also wonder if my new gum chewing habit hasn't been detrimental. Sometimes, I feel like it reinforces the need to be chewing/eating witho...

Sorry, but I don't agree with saying if you want a sweet, eat a sweet. I didn't read that advice above. And I certainly did not mean to imply it's ok to eat a sweet. What I wanted to say was that a contained fail is better than giving up. If you want a sweet that badly that you feel deprived and ar...

Great thoughts. Following up with KCCC's thoughts, one of the things I love is that No S requires you to be a grown up. It requires you to be reasonable about expectations, sensible about what to eat, and to say no to yourself. No S is one of the most counter-cultural things you can do. It's my litt...

If you want a sweet then eat the sweet and call it a fail. Over time, the negative reinforcement will mitigate your cravings. If fail is too strong a word, then call it non-compliant. The world will not end, you will not immediately gain ten pounds, and at the end of the day you are better off eatin...

I jumped on the scale this morning just because my curiosity was getting the better of me. So after Christmas, a week of traveling w/ emotional eating and little exercise... I weigh exactly the same as I did in mid December. IN short, I maintained. I'm pleased. Just to refresh people's memories, I'm...

Still No Sing, still not weighing. I took last week off from exercise as I was out of town sending my son to Afghanistan and I was sick. And yes, I engaged in more than a little emotional eating. But I'm getting back on track albeit slowly. Last night I jumped on the elliptical trainer and realized ...

A full scale overhaul is hard and for most of us unsustainable. I've been trying to integrate the Michael Pollan rule of "eat food/mostly plants/not too much" for about two years now one little tweak at a time. I'm just now up to adding chickpeas to our diet. You can still do paleo/primal but I reco...

I go the YMCA 4-5 times a week and have for 17 years. I do cardio machines, free weights and classes. My DH runs on their track in the winter, my 17 year old son swims daily or hits the weight room. Don't feel bad. I think 21 days is a rule of thumb for very simple behaviors and not across the board applicable to every new habit we want to develop. When you consider how complex eating is as a behavior - influenced by brain chemistry, social cues, and culture - I don't think it's reasonable to e...

Not only is it possible to maintain but I've been drifting downwards. I've dropped about 12 lbs since the beginning of May without really too much effort.
