The president of the British Society of Gastroenterology, Professor Chris Hawkey, agrees that the problem isn't what people are eating, it's how much we're eating: http://www.foodnavigator.com/Science-Nutrition/Fad-diets-are-making-Brits-fat-claims-gastro-expert He says, "The problem facing society ...

Guilt and angst are not good side dishes for holiday meals. Nor is worrying about calories, carbs, or fat in the food.

Shanah Tovah (Happy New Year) to Jewish No-S'ers!

Shanah Tovah! A happy, healthy, good, and sweet (but not too many sweets) New Year, filled with success, to Jewish No S'ers. Rosh Hashanah starts at sunset on Wednesday the 8th. Some people celebrate for one day, some (like me) for two. I'm posting this now because I'll be busy the rest of this week...

There's no rule that you have to have seconds, sweets, and snacks on S days. You can if you want to, but you don't have to. I often plan something I really like for dinner, and have seconds of that. Sometimes I will get a small portion of something sweet (once, a couple of little moon cakes from a C...

I generally start my "days" just before dinner time, so that Shabbat dinner on Friday night is part of my Saturday S day. So the break-the-fast meal is part of a different day for me.

Yom Kippur falls on a Saturday this year and next year, so I'll get a regular Sunday S-day after it.

Yom Kippur and HabitCal

The Jewish High Holy Days are coming up fast- they're early this year. Rosh Hashanah is no problem, just two more S days. But how do you mark Yom Kippur on HabitCal? And what about the day after it? This year it's an S day, but is it always? For those who don't know what I'm talking about, on Yom Ki...

It's two cups of water, not two glasses. I measured that out in our glasses, and two cups of water is a very full glass (your glasses may vary).

Drinking water before meals can help you lose weight

http://www.eurekalert.org/pub_releases/2010-08/acs-ctc080910.php This study found that drinking 2 cups of water before eating a meal helped people lose weight. I've been trying to drink more water, because I know it's generally healthy and might help with being hungry between lunch and dinner. Now ...

Fuzzy Pink Niven's* Law: Never waste calories. If you're going to eat or drink something high in calories, it should at least be something good that you really enjoy. A cup of water might even work for avoiding food and drinks at a work or social event (if you don't do tea or coffee). It gives you s...

Can you make it more difficult for you to get sweets when you want them? Is "don't have them in the house" or "don't go to the restaurant where you get them (except on S days)" an option? Or maybe you could avoid a particular kind or kinds of sweets that are your weakness, and keep other kinds of sw...

I felt really deprived at first by not being able to have seconds. Eventually, I got used to it, and it doesn't seem like so much deprivation now, most of the time. You do get used to things (or at least I do), and something that seems terrible at first may come to be acceptable.

I am not a dietitian or nutritionist or any other kind of diet expert, but I don't think you can eat as much as you want of whatever you want and expect to lose weight. If you're not going to control portion sizes, you'd have to avoid large amounts of calorie-dense foods. There are other diets that ...

At least it's one of the least obnoxious forms of portion control. You don't have to do stuff that normal people don't do, like weighing or measuring out your food. You don't have to throw out your plates and buy smaller ones. You don't have to try to develop any kind of awareness of when you're hun...

Anyone else have this problem with low-carb diets?

I've never tried going on an actual low-carb diet. But, every year at Passover, I eat a lower-carbohydrate diet for the eight days of the festival (since most wheat products, rice, and corn are not allowed during Passover). By the end of it, my mood is generally terrible- irritable and mean. I have ...

I found I didn't. One of the things I love about No S is that I don't feel so stuffed after dinner any more.

I'm also trying to make myself eat slower, while using No S to make me eat less.

Poll: What is/was your weakness- snacks, sweets, or seconds?

I didn't eat a lot of sweets even before I started No S. I sometimes ate snacks, but not that often. My weakness was seconds. I always ate too much, particularly at dinner time.

Hi, new here

I've been doing the No S diet since June and lurking on the forum, but just joined and set up a habitcal. I do vanilla No-S, except that my S-time runs from dinnertime Friday to when I go to bed on Saturday, so I can have seconds at Shabbat dinner on Friday night. I'm female, married (7 years August...
