Winter is hard. I've been doing this long enough to realize that my weight pops up a bit in the winter and then, if I'm compliant, falls in the spring and summer.

Have your sulk for a bit and then move on.

The only other suggestion I have is to start some weight training exercise.

I wouldn't overthink this. Allow yourself three meals a day. Even if you sleep in. You don't have to eat three meals but don't deny yourself the third meal. Expect to be non-compliant aka fail sometimes. It happens. Mark it and move on. Don't get extra strict trying to make up for it. Just get back ...

I've been doing No S for 4 years. It seems in the last year, I feel I've hit a new level where it is increasingly the default.

Most of the time. A few nights ago I was irritated I couldn't eat ice cream at night.

I think part of the problem with creating a satisfying, fulfilling life is that we make the mistake of comparing our lives - the interesting bits, the boring bits and the messed up bits - with the interesting snippets we get of other people's lives. Just like we should never compare ours bodies with...

Are these bodybuilding or competitive weight lifting websites per chance? If you have a compelling competitive need to gain muscle, then I would follow a diet recommended specifically for that sport. Otherwise, I would say eat protein, carbs and fiber in reasonable amounts and don't worry about it.

My thinking about food has changed qualitatively. I now define "good" food as food that tastes good, is prepared at home and uses minimally processed ingredients, even "fattening" ones such as sour cream and butter. There is also emotional space to enjoy life more. I have spent more time outdoors bi...

I use the half plate guideline to help manage calorie intake. For most of my lunches and dinners, half my plate should be veggies - corn, beans and potatoes do not count. Fresh and colorful veggies are preferable, but roasted is ok, too. I also try to have a piece of fruit at every meal. I go as lig...

Re: Feeling discouraged

It seems like when I feel the slightest twinge of hunger I just go crazy! And if I make my meals bigger to compensate for getting hungry, then the scale does not budge at all. This is your problem. You aren't eating enough at meal times. Don't worry about the scale going down just yet. That will co...

Most of your training time won't be spent running 13.1 miles. In fact, you will probably do the longer distances just on the weekends or S days. During the week, you will run 3- 6 miles, which can be done in about an hour. If you run more than an hour then a glass of chocolate milk is enough for pos...

I agree with Wosnes. I think reds should be reserved for those times when you snack, have seconds, or have sweets. If an unusual quirk in your schedule means you don't get a meal that's not being non-compliant. It's a a quirk beyond your control.

More on exercise vs dieting

This article discusses why exercise alone doesn't really do the job alone regarding weight loss. As you lose weight, your metabolism slows a little thereby slowing your weight loss. It's not hopeless. One of the researchers, in fact, lost 70lbs and yes, she took a daily walk. The article says she to...

I seem to recall that the old fashioned term was "reducing diet." I have a very vague memory of this from old movies or maybe books/magazines. I am guessing that diet as a prescribed eating plan with the intent of losing weight is just a shortened form of that term.
