I just have to ask, has this years winter been as brutal in South Dakota as it has been in Eastern Idaho? Not brutal but not warm, either. It's been cold. For most of January, we were well under normal temps. Precipitation has been average. Psychologically it feels higher because we are still comin...

Reasons other than weight loss for doing No S

Several conversations on this board have gotten me to thinking about reasons for doing No S other than weight loss. I know a lot of this is in the book, but it's good to unpack those reasons, shake them out and take a look to see how they fit us. So these are mine: It's a sensible and sane way to re...

Sometimes, you need to modify to make vanilla No S sustainable. One of the outcomes of the diet industry and the resulting ...

The whole food=guilt connection comes from a misunderstanding of what is gluttony. Ironically, in proclaiming a food "guilt free", that can encourage gluttony in that one does not feel any need to be self controlled in eating.

This kind of verbage leads to the worst kind of diet head thinking.

Miss Hartshorne's mother was British. Her father was from northern Vermont. So you can see how Miss Hartshorne comes by her opinions.

About Miss Hartshorne

I consulted with Miss Hartshorne about getting her own account here, and - much to my surprise - she demurred. She said that she didn't really enjoy fiddling around on the Internets; it was a waste of time (pointed look at me). Besides, she was much too busy. She's behind a sock since the business w...

Stigler Diet

The other day on Writer's Alamanac there was a piece on the Stigler Diet developed as a mathematical model rather than an eating plan. There's a diet named after Nobel laureate economist George Stigler. The Stigler Diet is actually a mathematical model for the cost of subsistence eating — a linear...
