Tommi's routine (and progress)

Which movements do you do? How many reps? In what order? When? Do you mix in other non-shovelglove moves? Post here or browse to get ideas.

Tommi's routine (and progress)

Post by tommi » Wed Feb 13, 2008 6:01 pm

This is the routine i use (i'm just my second day so it's not really hardcore, and as i read from what Reinhard wrote it's good to keep calm in order to develop an habit)

14 minutes routine:

45 shovels to the left
45 shovels to the right
20 churn butter left
20 churn butter right
20 chop wood left
20 chop wood right
8 flip the lever left
8 flip the lever right
20 shovels to the left
20 shovels to the right
20 churn butter left
20 churn butter right
20 chop wood left
20 chop wood right

Usually i have 2 more chops to do after the timer beeps, but i like to keep things specular (doing 18 chops would feel odd to me)

Thanks for sharing your routine!

I'd suggest probably reducing the rep count considerably at least for the first few months to reduce the chance of injury...

I will change my routine until pain disappear to this:

14 minutes routine:

25 shovels to the left
25 shovels to the right
10 churn butter left
10 churn butter right
10 chop wood left
10 chop wood right
10 hoist the sack left
10 hoist the sack right
4 flip the lever left
4 flip the lever right
10 shovels to the left
10 shovels to the right
10 churn butter left
10 churn butter right
10 chop wood left
10 chop wood right

Routine right now:
50 shovels to the left
50 shovels to the right
20 churn butter left
20 churn butter right
30 chop wood left
30 chop wood right
15 flip the lever left
15 flip the lever right
20 hoist the sack left
20 hoist the sack right
50 shovels to the left
50 shovels to the right
15 flip the lever left
15 flip the lever right

Progress log:
Today i could really feel that flip the lever moves became easier to do (i found hard doing 5 when starting), i believe this means my biceps are becoming stronger
I am thinking about dropping the churn butter moves, i don't really like it and i don't feel it's working on my muscles, it's pretty boring.
I still find hard to do hoist the sack moves in a comfortable way, the hammerhead keeps on getting into my back pockets or scratching my back, pushing me to bend my back a bit. I always have to check my form on the mirror to make sure my back is straight - need to find a solution for this.

TODO:
Try all other moves on the videos to find something better to do instead of churn butter

If churn butter seems too easy, imagine it's a giant mortar and pestle and bring it down hard -- not easy! And, if you need a more appealingly violent image, imagine you are Attila the Hun delivering the coup de grace to your defeated foe.

Routine

------------------------------
14 minutes
------------------------------
50 shovels to the right
50 shovels to the left
35 churn butter right
35 churn butter left
35 chop wood right
35 chop wood left
20 flip the lever right
20 flip the lever left
20 hoist the sack right
20 hoist the sack left
20 drive fence posts right
20 drive fence posts left
20 stoke the oven right
20 stoke the oven left
15 churn butter right
15 churn butter left
10 shovels to the right
10 shovels to the left
------------------------------

Progress:
Shoveling moves are becoming boring, i think i'll change shovel moves to drive fence posts moves - they are harder and i think more muscles are involved. Shoveling moves seem to do nothing to my arms, but that's probably wrong.
On the other hand, churn butter with the Attila the Hun modification by Reinhard feels great. I must remember to keep my legs wide apart when doing this move, it seems to help keeping form.
I have bought the 5kg (11.02#) hammer today - looks like spanish shovelglovers have the same problem, i don't really understand why
Its handle is 15 cms shorter than the one on my 4kg sledgehammer, which is perfect to make churn butter and hoist the sack moves under my low ceiling.
I'll see tomorrow how my body behaves to the hammer upgrade :)

TODO:
Decrease shovel moves and increase drive fence posts moves.
See if stoke the oven is done the right way, doesn't feel hard.

-------------------------
50 shovels to the right
50 shovels to the left
35 churn butter right
35 churn butter left
40 chop wood right
40 chop wood left
20 flip the lever right
20 flip the lever left
20 hoist the sack right
20 hoist the sack left
20 drive fence posts right
20 drive fence posts left
20 stoke the oven + squat right
20 stoke the oven + squat left
15 churn butter right
15 churn butter left
20 shovels to the right
20 shovels to the left
------------------------

Added squats to stoke the oven (squat to 'collect coal from ground', stand up and 'put coal into oven'), great movement.

Increased final shovel moves, maybe this will force me to remember that i hate them and i should switch them to drive fence posts..
