Habit success

Post by ceo418 » Tue Jul 21, 2015 6:53 pm

I posted this in my daily check-in, but thought I would share it on the general discussion page as well. Last night was a test of these new habits for me. At some point after dinner I started thinking that cookies sounded good. I took three out of a container in the freezer and put them on the counter, then moved them to the table next to the couch along with my mug of tea. For the next hour and a half, I watched tv and kept glancing at the cookies, wondering if I was going to go ahead and eat them and then change the day to red on the Habitcal. Finally, I took the cookies to the kitchen and placed them in the garbage can. When I sat back down, I realized that just five months ago I would have not only eaten those cookies, I would have eaten about three more and probably gone for some chocolate in the cupboard. I also would have eaten my usual handful of M&Ms right when I got home from work and not worried about whether I'd still be hungry enough for dinner. It's amazing to see how much my thinking (or not thinking, as the case may be) about food has changed since I started No-S! I'm sure quite a few of you have had the same opportunities to see how your habits have changed as you've adopted No-S into your lives. :D

Way to go! It's amazing how much easier this gets the longer you do it, when other diets seem to get harder the longer you do them :D

I wouldn't test myself quite like that very often, even after a few years, though I do push the envelope other ways. (Judith Beck advocates using the motto No Choice for sticking to one's plan. It's the dickering with ourselves that wears us out. But I still do it sometimes, too.)

Curious why you trashed the cookies. Why not just put them back? Or was that your way of declaring victory?

Oolala, I think it was because there were just a few left from the batch I had made from the 4th of July and they were probably going to be thrown out soon anyway. I usually don't try to tempt myself, although it will happen that I'll still, out of old habits, get some chocolate or cookies out (normally I'll put the cookies back) and intend to eat them, but then look at them from time to time and decide "No, I want to stay with my new habits." :)

Congratulations!

One of my friends had a binge/purge thing going on, and during recovery she used to go to the supermarket and buy all her trigger foods....then put them in the food bank on the way out! I don't know why but it really helped her! (And helped the food bank too!)

Kit.
