Hi All! I don't know if this series, "Eating Psychology with Betty," is broadcast on PBS nationwide. I've found it very interesting. I watched Episode 102 today, which deals with eating triggers. It explained a lot!

Didn't take the time to watch the episode (I wish there was a script to read- much faster!) but I went to the original site to peruse and like this: " focusing on your environment and your habits is more effective than focusing ONLY ON WEIGHT LOSS OR GAIN." caps mine

She definitely talks about learned behavior and why we do what we do as far as food is concerned. It's humbling to know that I have so much in common with Pavlov's dogs!

We all do!

I wish she'd find another term than hungry. There should be some term that means our stomachs feel really empty and something else for all the rest of it, IMHO. To me there's a big difference between that hollow feeling and just desire with no hollow feeling.

I've watched two of the episodes while doing dishes and clean up. So far, not much that's very practical about how to thwart some of the tendencies to eat without hunger. But it's more interesting than a diet book...

Yes! I've always referred to the latter as "the munchies." That means "I want to eat" (and may not even know WHAT I want to eat!) but not "I'm hungry."

The STRong Way (a thread here) calls it "jonesing." That really puts it in perspective for me. Oh, I'm just jonesing.

Agreed! There's truly hungry, as in feeling hunger pangs, and then there's "I'm tired and I need sugar to pick me up" hungry, "I'm stressed out and I need comfort food" hungry, etc. etc. "Jonesing" is a great term to describe cravings. I also like "hangry" - so hungry that one's blood sugar is low, causing extreme grumpiness.

But for me it's not usually low blood sugar. It's just the jillions of pairings of food with other cues.

I've heard that a few times, but fear I am missing some really obvious reference or meaning that I should know--I have no idea why it makes sense to call it that! Should I crawl back under my rock?!

Of course not! Be proud that you don'' know old time drug culture. It just means that someone is looking for a fix. I'm not sure, either, but I think it was for heroin. Some equate it with craving. Maybe I'm usiing it wrong because craving to me is much stronger than what I usually feel, but it's an antsy, annoyed feeling. It's funny because it's not even close to painful or even as clear as hunger, but it's more irritating.

Okay, I asked my teen son, and at first he said he didn't know, and then when I told him the context, he thought maybe it was drug related.

LOL, my mind wanted to make this rhyme. Trying to decide if I like crud-fud or crude-food better!
