No S Catch Phrase Glossary (add yours!)

No S Catch Phrase Glossary?
As I have followed these topics, I've seen a lot of one-liners/zingers that cut straight to the heart of what we're trying to do. Of course the first is Reinhard's original simple and straightforward eating plan with its fourteen little words and his S day advice as below:

"The No S Diet:
* No Snacks
* No Sweets
* No Seconds
Except (sometimes) on days that start with 'S' "

And certainly, his to-the-point admonishment about S days:
"Don't Be An Idiot"

However, I've seen a lot of other short but sweet zingers that address a specific issue or otherwise make a great point--in a nutshell.

When I read cfrbdm's daily check in page today I saw yet another one that is certainly good advice and food (ooh. . .) for thought:

"Enjoy without Excess"

So I tried to remember some of the others I've read but my mind is blank and I'm only remembering a couple as posted below. To those of you who have referenced a good phrase or have coined a great little one-liner that perpetuates this thing we're doing, please post it in this thread and we could have a little "glossary" of phrases to refer to. Include the "author" if you know it. I'm guessing that a lot of phrases have been tossed around and we may not know who said it first. And I don't want to be accused of plagiarism!

I'm hoping to get a string of these phrases so that I can create a little document--maybe a screen saver with the quotes that randomly pop up or make some "business cards" that could be something to put by my computer at work to inspire me. Another thought would be to make a "pocketmod" of my favorites. I'm all about gimmicky reminders to help me stay focused. I already saved the red and black No S Logo as a pic and have it as my main screen on my cell phone. Every time I open the phone, I see it staring straight at me! And since I'm always on my cell, it's a great reminder!

"Three squares a day is the way." (Can't remember who said it but I like it!)

"We stop looking for the better diet and start looking for a better life." pangelsue

"Somehow I reached excess without ever noticing when I was passing through satisfaction." -- Ashleigh Brilliant (courtesy ThomsonsPier) I love this one!

"If hunger is not the problem, food is not the answer." (resting52)

So please feel free to add to this topic--perhaps making the Subject the phrase--no need to even explain it. Do give the source if you know it! Or if I have misrepresented a source here, please correct me!

LA Loser (on the way to being LA Winner!)

What was that quote. . .?

OK-so sometime in the last 24 hours, I could have sworn I saw a great little line that encapulated the idea of "the easiest way to work off that indulgence (or something like that?) is to not put it in your mouth to begin with."

I know that's not the right wording and I can't find it anywhere. Maybe it wasn't on these boards, but was in a link that someone posted? Anyway, if anyone remembers seeing this, please let me know where it was or what it said. It would be a good addition to my glossary I'm trying to put together!

Thanks,

Can't help you on the query, but I have a nomination. :)

From the "Honesty required" thread.

Mark it and move on. (That's with regard to red days. Don't rationalize away, don't make bargains, just mark it and move on.)

Edited to add that vmsurbat first said it, though I've adopted it almost as a mantra!

Here's one I came across in an article I read (ok, ok, it was a quote Corey Haim's trainer told him to help him lose like a hundred pounds. I read it in People  ) But I like it!

"Nothing tastes as good as skinny feels."

Thanks for the additions!

That's a really good one. I think I've seen it before. . . now to remember that when I'm looking right at that last piece of key lime pie in the fridge--yes, my spouse has been at it again! But I had my share during the weekend so I'm hanging strong!

Thanks to you and KCCC for sharing.

When I get the chance I'm going to scour the website and/or book for more short but sweet little quips.

I have heard the phrase "nothing tastes as good as skinny feels." But that is not true for me. If I am looking at something delicious (usually it is sweet), sometimes I want it more than I want to be skinny. Much easier now to simply wait a few days until it is time for whatever!

CrazyCatLady,

I did have that one in my earlier post. . . I really really like that one!

And I just re-read Joelle's post that cited:

"Remain calm and carry on."

I think that one will help when something stressful or unusual (doesn't even have to be STRESSFUL) happens at work and I see a colleague's big jar of snacksize candy bars. . . when did I ever have just one!?

An obviously great entry for the glossary:

Regarding IDEAL WEIGHT. . .
Reinhard: I don't think there is much point in having an ideal weight. Have ideal behavior -- habits of moderate eating and exertion. Whatever you weigh then is ideal.

And the condensed version from No S Dieter:
"Ideal Behavior=Ideal Weight"

Love it!

 Whoops!

How about the idea of having an
S event rather than an S day...so if there is a wedding shower in the evening, the bulk of the day is a normal N day, but at the shower you will have some punch or a slice of cake. Learning to enjoy occasional small indulgences is truly an art!

good idea

Posted: Wed Jul 30, 2008 4:17 am
by la_loser
CrazyCatLady,
I'm thinking your idea here is similar to something I posted elsewhere. . .
I posted a longer version of the following on the Limiting Failure topic on July 13, then of course had to go back and reiterate to everyone that my goal was to still be true to strictly No S --but like your idea about the one exception for the day fits well with this. . . On my Strictly Speaking HabitCall, it would still be a RED day--but on the GREEN_Equals_Two_R_Less_S_Slips HabitCal, I would be able to track if it was a single slip or two rather than an all out crazy day!

These are the types of strategies that I could include in my addendum to my little document. . . not one-liners or zingers but food for thought. I've already added several other suggestions from other posters in that area as well.

From that post:
I do want to have an honest record of my No S journey. Rather than do it on the daily check-ins. . .takes too long-I get so wordy (obviously!) and I don't have time to do that all the time! So I have made additional HabitCals. . . I created:

Strictly_Speaking_No_S--as per Reinhard's Fence Around the Law line of thought (I went back and copied my original NoSDiet Habitcal and deleted the original)

Not_an_Idiot_S_Day: Reserved for S days whether it's weekends of NWS days. . . to be able to track my habit of not going crazy on those days!

GREEN_Equals_Two_R_Less_S_Slips: My way of keeping track of little slips (ok-failures!) of the strictness of the diet--but so I can note whether this was a biggie or just one extra helping of one item and one healthy type snack, perhaps. . . I give myself a RED if my slip-ups were more massive!

At least by doing it by HabitCal, it's quick to record and a great visual version of my progress. And it tells a more complete story.
Thanks for the thought--hadn't even thought of adding that part!
Now that reminds me, I need to update my HabitCals--so later!

That is excellent Bright Angel, and so important to keep in mind.
How many of us have a hard time patting ourselves on the back for being great, if the scale doesn't show a loss???
If we really know we made our best effort, nothing can take that away and it deserves applauding regularly!

I also like the one about drivin into a pole and deciding to go crash into a brick wall.. That sounds like a pretty metaphorically apt description of the binge mentality.. funny and true.

Hi all,

Just wanted to share my favourite eating catchphrases!

“No Snacks, No Sweets, No Seconds - Except (sometimes) on days that start with S†our fearless leader

“Eat food. Not too much. Mostly plants.†Michael Pollan

"Animals are my friends...I don't eat my friends." George Bernard Shaw

I'm also going to adopt:

"If hunger is not the problem, food is not the answer." (resting52)

This is a quote from CrazyCatLady, explaining how she felt after deftly handling the food at a party:

I have to tell you how happy I am to have found you all and this diet!
Finally a system I can stick to! I actually feel FREE for the first time. I don't think "Oh I have to go on a diet tomorrow" and then end up eating all the stuff I think I can't have, today, before I have to diet tomorrow. Because I can eat whatever I want (except Ss) every day. Wow, talk about a pleasure. No more guilt and no more binge eating. I am discovering the joy of moderate eating.

I am really happy. And confident. I know I can do this. For me this is the most sensible thing going. Cut through so much of my food neurosis.

Oolala53,
I redid the formatting for you. You can always look to see what it's going to look like by clicking preview before you submit. I've noticed if I set a phrase or line as a color, then change another word within that part to another color, the original colors remain instead. It is kind of tricky. . .but play with it a little and you'll get the hang of it.

These are great quotes. Thanks.

Exactly--I had just read that post again and copied it to add to this thread when I saw BA beat me to it. Somehow I'd missed seeing that.

I think that is a huge "revelation." There's a line from a favorite play of mine, Greater Tuna, a hilarious look at life in a small Texas town that Burlsgirl's comment reminds me of. . .The coach is explaining why his team lost. He says something like "Well, if we could have put some more points on the board and they hadn't made so many touchdowns, I think the outcome would have been a lot different! Uh, huh."

Gee, if we'd put less stuff in our mouths and move a little more, we'd have this thing whipped. Oh, yeah, that's what Reinhard's trying to tell us!

On the Shovel Glove Discussion, Storm Fox, in a discussion about those who are skeptical about Shovel Glove, referred to this quote by Mike Mentzer, a body building guru, who said,
"If you're going to lead the orchestra, you've got to turn your back on the crowd."
That quote seems to apply to No S as well. Thanks to Reinhard, we have managed to lose that old "diet" mindset of those myriad things we've tried with little or no sustainable success, No S emerges as the logical answer. We've turned our backs to those crowds of marketing and mindset and we're leading ourselves into a slow, safe, sustainable success mode!

Hi Danger Will Robinson..
I just wanted to say thanks for "That was good, but I've had enough" as I was able to implement it yesterday at the diner when we went out to celebrate after my Son's concert.
My mother treated us to a dinner special, which includes salad, and dessert and side dishes etc...
I found myself eating half of each of these side dishes and sharing them with my Son, and leaving some.. When it came to dessert, I was pretty sated but couldn't resist having some fresh rice pudding with whipped cream.. But after about 2/3rds of it, I said *aloud* "That was good, but I've had enough"...
I could feel that if I didn't I would have definitely overeaten and polished it off just cos it was there.
I know it's only about 1/3 of a cup of rice pudding, but it was the act of stopping myself once I realised I had really had enough and yet was still picking up the spoon to continue eating the rest..

Thanks a lot for that phrase!
I will be using it anytime I'm up against over eating or sweeting.
Worked great!

Found these words of wisdom from Phyllis.

Phyllis wrote:
I need to lose weight but more than anything this way of living has given me my sense of dignity back. Everyday I NoS I can look in the mirror and see a woman in control instead of a raging lunatic who was eating out of a sense of desperation or in rebellion of the "rules". I actually eat what I enjoy, so if I don't lose a pound it is okay just to be able to eat without obsessing.

This expresses my feelings about No S so well. It is such a blessing to have my dignity back!

I love all these....I need to print them all out & post them on my bulletin board!

Here's one that helps me when I eat more than I should...

Just pick yourself up, dust off the crumbs and keep moving forward.

Magic Man hits the nail on the head!

MagicMan, a new member, posted this comment tonight on his Intro thread:
My weight is not the problem. My weight is the symptom. My problem is my eating habits, and I'm finally sensibly confronting that problem instead of the symptom. It will take some time for the symptom to resolve itself, but it also took quite some time for the symptom to reach this level.
It seems to me that this is probably a very insightful message that many of us can identify with -- it really cuts to the heart of the matter -- and truly epitomizes much of the No S philosophy.

And hey everyone else, don't forget to check out this thread -- it's got some great entries that may strike a chord!

Try this mental image. . .

And here is another great quote-from the man himself. . . what a mental image this invokes!
It is funny how most conventional diets feel like ballast, something extra, that we immediately reach to jettison when seas get too rough. Habitually ingrained no-s is more like the mast, fixed to the ship itself, something we can cling to to keep from being swept away by the swirling chaos all around us.

Reinhard
Thanks Rein for the poetic simile.

Don't Mess with S's

So as I replied to Brenna about mods to the 2 S days a week question she posed, I accidentally came up with a little line that speaks to the idea of whether one should impose limitations on S days, other than simply "don't be an idiot"-Reinhard's words, not mine!

You've heard of
"Don't mess with Texas"
How about
"Don't Mess with S Days!"
or even
"Don't Mess with S's"
which could have multiple meanings.

I've kind of been calling my No-S "No S + 1" meaning No S plus one snack (yogurt or cheese stick) when I really need it :).

Hunger is. . .

Posted: Sun Mar 22, 2009 3:47 am
by la_loser
In another post Reinhard made these comments. They seem worthy of this thread!
"Hunger is the prelude to satisfaction."

or (adapting from Socrates):

"Hunger is the best appetizer."

If you don't ever let yourself get hungry, you don't ever really experience the pleasure of eating.
I really like the message of these quotes. I know I'm appreciating quality food a lot more than I used to.

. . . and since Debs suggested my "cheerleader tendencies," I decided to create a new avatar. It's so small you can't really see it, but there IS a NO S logo on the gal!

These one liners are all so great, I want to put them all on Post-It's and cover my bathroom mirror with them! they're so inspirational. I'm not good with words in the least. I can never think of anything clever and memorable to keep myself motivated, but I guess that's ok because I have all you fine people who have put together this wonderful thread. I'm so grateful for you all, and everything on this beautiful site.

Right after reading the No S Diet, I heard a voice inside my head say

"Food can save your life or kill you. It's your choice!

Just enough will keep you alive, too much will kill you (sickness, disease, etc).

Enough said.

Looking at my EOB from my doctor's visits last month, a thought came to me.

"If snacks and sweets were a necessity, it would be covered by my medical insurance!"

Good quote from Kathleen:
A habit followed with perfect compliance beomes stronger and stronger over time.
You don't think about following it. You just follow it.

I've been meaning to post this since every time I read it on Mimi's signature, I get a great visual image.

If you start to slip, tie a knot and hang on! (Mimi)

Besides I decided it was time to push this thread to the top since we have several newbies who may not have seen it. It's exciting it's grown to two pages now!

On a thread before vacation, I said that I would allow some treats, but only special things, unique to the area.
An S-worthy treat. Sometimes.

(Aside: this reminds me a little of Elaine on Seinfeld talking about "sponge-worthy" dates, which amuses me.)
Mimi said that line belonged here - and after vacation, I decided she was right. Asking "is this S-worthy?" really kept me in check. There's an amazing amount of stuff that just ISN'T, lol!

Just for decoration.

Here's the background...
Funny story:
A parent I know used a really creative excuse not to buy her toddler daughter different things she wanted in the store. When the little girl would ask for a doll, or a fancy cupcake, the parent would say sadly, "honey, those are just for decoration" - which the child would accept unquestioningly. (A total lie of course, but she felt it much better than trying to explain family economic choices to a toddler... and much better than dealing with a tantrum.)

Now, I'm not necessarily advocating lying as a parenting strategy... but I have noticed that I now regard a lot of food-like products as the equivalent of "just for decoration" - stuff that's not really for eating, that's outside of the bounds of real choice. Vending machines fall into that category - lots of pretty colors, nothing there to eat.

Reminds me of the first time we went to a grocery store after we moved to the US. Lots of nice packages, catchy slogans and pretty colours - but not a lot of actual food. We walked out without buying anything.

Hilly6000 avoided talking herself into a very tempting sweet on an N day (so big deal, it's almost the weekend, I could just take a red day, etc.) by reaching the conclusion above.

Okay, if people/Reinhard think this is too nasty to use, I will understand but it has really helped me. I often remind myself that I am a big girl, all grown up and

if I can wait to pee, I can wait to eat.

The quote in my signature has been very inspirational to me.

"It is a mistake to try to look too far ahead. The chain of destiny can only be grasped one link at a time." --Winston Churchill

When I reach for that one piece of candy, thinking "What's one bite sized snickers in the grand scheme of things?" that quote brings me back to the fact that I need to stay focused on No-S. Because while that one piece of candy might not add enough calories or fat or whatever to make any difference, it's a break in the chain of making No-S habits, and that thought is usually enough to keep me away from the candy for long enough to get distracted by something else.

I love "nothing worthwhile is ever easy"-- by far the hardest part of No S is the slow pace. I found one in a book Reinhard recommended, Mindless Eating:

Out of sight, out of mind. (For snacks, sweets, and seconds tempting you on N days).

And, as someone who struggled especially with snacking forced himself to say out loud:

"I'm not hungry, but I'm eating this anyway."
