I have a friend who lives in Paris, and that is exactly how they feed the kids at his preschool -- they'll have a starter, then maybe salmon with lentils, salad and french bread, and a little sweet of some kind. Every day!

She says that on weekends, he complains if he doesn't get an appetizer with his lunch.

You know what my daughter's school has? Corn dogs. Well, and a salad bar that nobody eats.

But while the U.S. government uses schools to support the industrial meat and dairy industries, Italy sees schools as a vehicle to support organic farms and traditional farming. In fact, Italy has a law that calls for organic and local products in schools, hospitals and other public institutions:

â€œTo guarantee the promotion of organic agricultural production of â€˜qualityâ€™ food products, public institutions that operate school and hospital canteens will provide in the daily diet the use of organic, typical and traditional products as well as those from denominated areas, taking into account the guidelines and other recommendations of the National Institute of Nutritionâ€
