July challenge!

Post by ~reneew » Sun Jun 28, 2009 4:00 pm

I'm issuing a challenge to you to have an excellent month and to concentrate on respectable plates, or choose another thing on your hit list.

I thought we needed a thought provoking, new thing to focus on. I think we can all do this and certainly have room for improvement. I think we should re-read the "no seconds" section of No S. Here is my summary: "Have normal looking plates... you can put anything - healthy or unhealthy, caloric or not - on your plate as long as it's not a sweet. If you have more than one vertical layer of food on your plate, you are most certainly over eating."
If you have developed selective blindness when it comes to your plate, get someone's opinion on it. I'm sure a family member or friend will give you their opinion! If not, imagine asking an opinion. If you need to tame your dishing up... maybe look at your plate size. I recomend using a ruler. No platters allowed and no leaning towers of pizza either! Good luck and enjoy this one... I may break out the china! If you're already in control of your heapin' helpins, pick a problem of your own to conquer this month... we're in this together.

***************************************************************
***************************************************************
* * * Remember (until July 2nd) to only post once at the top and edit that one so that we can all view eachother's post easily.

**************************************************************

I'm in. I think my weak spot is exercise and exercise moderation. If I was younger I'd bike to work every day, but it seems my knees are not up to that.

So I'm going to track my Weekday Biking and Walking in a simplified way, so I can keep track of how much I'm doing of each, and monitoring closely my knees, backing off as necessary. FAILURES would be days of exercise missed due to knee pain, or laziness. Exercise Habitcal Color will be emphasized in my log, since that's what I'm concentrating on this month. Gold medallion for the month would be no red, Silver 1 to 2 red, Bronze 3 to 4 red. Weight goal is to lose 6 lbs.

Count me in also. I have been in the midst of kitchen remodeling and vacation. My habits have fallen to pieces. I am going to use habit cal this time. I will start tomorrow.

I've had good days and bad days, but I miss looking forward to treats on the weekends.

I'll be on vacation for the first two weeks of July, so will use the July Challenge to keep things relatively on track for that. The July Challenge will be really useful for the last two weeks, as I don't plan on being very strict at all while vacationing. Thanks, ~reneew! It's going to be nice to know that I have this to look forward to when I return home!

Update 7/1 - 7/15
First two weeks turned out to be a free-for-all while on vacation, with all sorts of snacking and seconds, although I must say, I don't enjoy sweets as much as I used to at all, a good thing, I think. Back in the saddle on my first day back (7/16), so hope to have better news for the rest of the month!

Edit: Instead of "hope to have better news", my goal is to have zero red No-S days for the rest of the month.

7/01 - 7/15 = RED, RED, RED!

7/16 = Green
7/17 = Green
7/18 = Green
7/19 = Green (yay! seem to be getting back in the groove)
----------------
7/20 = Green
7/21 = Green
7/22 = Green
7/23 = Green
7/24 = Green
7/25 = Green
7/26 = Green (inadvertently -- just didn't feel like S-ing)
----------------
7/27 = Green
7/28 = Yellow (family picnic)
7/29 = Green
7/30 = Green

I really liked the "best month ever" goal last month - it was kind of open to personal interpretation.

This month, I've already set a challenge for myself: I'm doing the "Couch to 5K" with a friend. So, I'm going to pass on the plate challenge. While it's definitely a good idea, I've learned the hard way that too many simultaneous goals are a recipe for multiple failures. (For me, anyway.)

Best wishes to everyone working on this one this month - I may check in at times to cheer you on.

Edited to add: ~reneew, how kind of you to adjust your original goal in the way you did! What you initially proposed is a GREAT suggestion, but I like the option of setting a different one. The C-2-5K is my primary goal... though I do think I could also be more careful about "plating." :)

I'm in and rarin' to go again! I will still focus on my behavior and habits, since I am being cautiously optimistic about having them down. I've been there before and managed to fall from grace, so this time I want to do it right.

So, no RED days for me in July!
No weighing other than on the first three days of the month, and then I'll take an average.
This month I'm adding a habitcal for exercising at least 3-5 days per week since I've slacked off since school's out.

It'll be fun!

Mimi :D

July 1: weigh-in #1 Weight has dropped! Need two more weigh-ins to average before revealing. No exercise today.
July 2: weigh- in #2 15 minutes of exercise...
July 3: weigh-in #3 Weight loss for June: 3 pounds; Weight loss since beginning April 30: 5.5 pounds! I'm pleased!
July 4 - exempt NoS and exercise (injured)

Count Me In

Post by jenglish » Mon Jun 29, 2009 6:29 am

Count me in! I caught a sale and purchased three pairs of very decorative 9" plates for our meals.

I have two everyday plates. One is very colorful. It is blue with alternating red, yellow and orange rings. My other one is a red plate with a red and white border. My Sunday plate is a red square plate (red is my favorite color).

These next set of 21 days, I am aiming to set my table and eat from my new plates at every meal.
This is NOT a diet, for me, it is a LIFESTYLE CHANGE

5.16.09: 210 pounds - - - 06/16/2009 : 200 pounds

Hmm, we've done that already at our home (our plates are now 8 1/2 inches), but I enjoyed the challenge, so I might have to think of something else.
A complete no red month or possibly to get used to drink a glass of water with my meals, either way, I'm in again.

EDIT

Okay, I've realized that I do feel better if I drink something with my meals, so, this month, I'll drink a glass or cup of something with every meal, on top of keeping in with NoS core rules.

July 1 GREEN
July 2 GREEN

I did well with my June goal, being able to return to no-S after minor deviations. Slips did not become slides, even (especially) in the same day they occured. Yo-yo'd weight wise within a five-lb range.

My focus for July will be to continue with that, if a slip should happen to occur  , but especially S days and trying to make them less excessive.

July 1: SUCCESS
July 2: SUCCESS
July 3-5: S days but I marked them RED on my habitcal because they were excessive.
July 6: SUCCESS
July 7: lazy RED late evening.
July 8: SUCCESS
July 9: big (though healthy) dinner
July 10: SUCCESS
July 11: not exactly an idiot
July 12: somewhat of an idiot but could have been worse

July 13: SUCCESS
July 14: FAILURE
July 15: FAILURE
July 16: SUCCESS (day 1 -- going for 21)
July 17: SUCCESS (day 2)
July 18: reasonable S day though not the healthiest choices (day 3)
July 19: kind of strange S day (day 4)
July 20: SUCCESS (day 5)
July 21: SUCCESS (day 6)
July 22: SUCCESS (day 7)
July 23: SUCCESS (day 8)
July 24: SUCCESS (day 9)
July 25: S day
July 26: S day
July 27: qualified SUCCESS (day 12)
July 28: Success with S dinner (friends in from out of town--did not go way overboard) (day 13)
July 29-31: SUCCESS (days 14-16)

Four red days in July. No weight loss that stuck. Plates too big and S days too wild.

Medal Month

Post by Ms » Tue Jun 30, 2009 1:44 pm

July will be the best month yet! In May I had 11 Fail days, in June I had 8 Fail days, I aim to get zero Fail days in July!

(Reneew I love you and these challenges! Thanks!!!!! )

I lost two pounds and 3/4 inch off my waist in June, with 8 fail days. Imagine the progress I will see in July, with fewer fail days!

July 1: SECONDS So, my goal of having zero fail days in July was completely wiped out today. I had a banana with my lunch, that was not part of my plate nor did it fit on my plate (and I knew this before I ate it!). Oh well. The BEST news is that when I failed, I acknowledged it and moved on. I did not enter into a gorge-self-pity-fest as I have usually done in the past. So even though I failed, I consider my act of acknowledging the failure and moving on as progress. The rest of July will be much better. My goal has now changed to NO MORE FAILURES IN JULY!

July 2: My boss gives us a cheese pizza lunch every Thursday. Today, I had two slices, an orange, and no more!!! To prevent temptation, I immediately signed out and went for a walk. Then I stopped at a store and purchased some cute, comfy sneakers marked down to a grand total of $24.99. How cool is that? I was rewarded for my good behavior.

July has been a stressful month. I've lost an uncle, my favorite, closest cousin was diagnosed with a serious condition, I was laid off, and my relationship with my boyfriend is on the rocks. With all that going on, I haven't made the time to pay attention to my eating habits. But today I will get a handle on things and start again. Here's to my first serious attempt to get into the 21-day club!

I'm in again :) Hopefully I'll do better. I had may red days in June but more green days than I have in several months. Now that I'm netwalking, I'm adding a goal to do 99% of my computering on the treadmill instead of the desktop upstairs.

I'm new, but would love to join. I've been no-s'ing for 5 days, and so far I love it. My challenge will be to keep my no-s days green on habit cal for the entire month.

1: S Day-my daughter's first birthday. Made me realize that it's finally time to get rid of the weight I gained during pregnancy!

SO far I've had no problem with the plate size -- I have my daughter (7 years old) to give her unsolicited opinion. I'm so much worse on snacking and sweets. I'm still a newbie to no s (7 days tomorrow) so my goals are simple: all greens in the month of July, keep the "fence around the rule" especially where snacks are concerned; eat at THE TABLE only (the first few days on No S I would finish my plate in front of the computer). If I can reach all of those goals, while on vacation, while vacationing with my mother-in-law (the Food Pusher), while traveling, while going to professional training days where you get FREE food in the morning and at lunch (why is that so tempting -- that it's FREE?), then I'll be made in the shade! I'm giving myself until August to work on exercise goals. THIS IS ENOUGH FOR NOW!

I'm in!

I'm doing well at the moment thanks to some diet tweaks (more protein, less restriction on fats). So I'd also like to have a great No S month of July.

My goals for July are:

Do T-tapp or yoga for 15 minutes most mornings (preferably every morning).

Do my daily FLYlady routines (keeping my house & laundry situation in order so I have more time to play and prepare healthy meals!).

Have the most successful No S month yet.

Eat good sources of protein and fat with each meal + plenty of veggies.

Edited to add: My weight goal is mainly maintenance. I would like to tone up, build muscle & reduce squishy areas

Today's breakfast was 1 slice wholegrain toast with coconut oil & peanut butter, 1/2 a sliced banana & 1 cup soy milk with a scoop of hemp protein powder. Felt just right, not too heavy but enough to keep me going all morning.

I won't post each day's food, but I will update on how my days go and occasionally note which foods/meals seem to do me good and which don't.

1: Green. T-tapped 15 mins, walkies for 40 mins. Did my Flylady routines, didn't do zone cleaning though - still not ready to face the clutter!
2: Green. T-tapped 15 mins, walkies 25 mins. Went out for dinner & had beer battered haddock & chips. Fly routines were rushed, but still done.
3: Half S day - Friday afternoon I usually allow one S day treat (so I get to try whatever goodies co-workers have brought in this week). Didn't have time for T-tapp this morning but did my morning walkies.
4: Green. (could have had another 'half S day' if I wanted, but didn't).
5: S day. Had some raspberry pie with real berries from my Dad's garden :P
6: Extra S day (family day out). had a fruit flapjack.
7: Green - was tempted to cheat at one point but remembered this thread and thought better not! Did T-tapp in evening + walkies. Did FLY my routines.
8: Green. Didn't T-Tapp though, been pretty drained this week.
9: Green. " " hoping to catch up at the weekend.
10: S Day. Haven't had any S's yet (as at 4.30pm), but definitely fancy some dark chocolate this evening.
11:Green. Having Saturday as an N day seemed to work just fine :) Did my zone cleaning as promised to myself.
12: S Day.
13: Green. Still doing my FLYlady routines etc. & T-tapp in the mornings.
14: Green.
15: Biological S Day (a term I borrowed from one of the other ladies on here). Not permission to go wild though :D
16: Green.
17: S Day. just an ordinary S day. Had a fruit flapjack. No S's planned particularly. Maybe some cocao nibs & fruit.
18: Green.
19: S Day. Didn't feel like having any major S's except a snack.
20: Green.
21: Green.
22: Red There was cake, it was good, it wouldn't have lasted til Friday, excuses excuses!
23: Green.
24: S Day.
25: Green.
26: S Day.
27: Green.
28:Green.
29: Green.
30: Green.
31: S Day.

Good luck everyone 8)

Day 1

Post by jenlio97 » Wed Jul 01, 2009 10:48 am

I have had a good week so far and I am going to stick to the basics as well as wactching plate size this month. 4th of July festivities are coming and my birthday I am thinking too much about over doing it on S days. I am going to try to focus on today.

Out of town guests when do I eat?

Post by jenlio97 » Thu Jul 02, 2009 2:14 pm

I am making myself a nervous wreck about when and what I will be able to eat. I get up early and hold breakfest until 8:30 but my family that is visiting will eat breakfest at 11:30. Then they will all want to go on a sight seeing activity and get hungry for lunch around two. So, do I eat lunch at my regular 12:30 or do I wait until two. My inability to delay gratification wants me to eat sooner, but I know that I do not have the will power to go out with them and eat nothing. On top of that we have the 4th of July festivities on Sat. s-day, a birthday party on Sun S-day and we are all going to the Amusement park on Mon. Temptations everywhere. and My birthday is Wed. S-day. I am afraid with all of these s-day's I will not reach my goals. Any advice is appreciated

I think you are overly-complicating things. This is a small period of time in your life and a handful of days where you mess up a little aren't going to matter one bit if you practice the long term No-S idea. Enjoy the time with your family.

Also, setting goal weights and deadlines often has more of a damaging effect than positive. I find checking weight once in a while just to make sure I am on track is much better than being anal about it. Daily fluctuations in body weight make weighing yourself more than fortnightly completely useless. Even then I think monthly is more appropriate.

The upcoming weekend are S-days, so don't worry about them. Ditto for your birthday.

If you really think there's too many S-days falling too close, do "S-events" rather than "S-days" - that is, have one thing at the amusement park and then keep the rest of the day like and N-day. (Not generally advised for normal S-days, btw. You need a certain amount of release.)

Do whatever will make you least crazy. :)

I think whether setting goals helps or hurts must be more of a personality thing. Setting goals is a time honored method to achieve success. Countless humans throughout history have successfully set and met their goals. Life would be pretty Gray without goal reaching.

Checking weight daily does not necessarily make you anal. (That's rather insulting actually.) It's how you respond to the daily weight that might lead to problems.

Daily fluctuations in weight can be accounted for quite accurately using some basic math. See Hacker's Diet http://www.fourmilab.ch/hackdiet/www/hackdiet.html. The same weight trending principle is applied at http://www.physicsdiet.com/.

Using this mathematical weight trending has done absolute life changing wonders for my motivation. I'm steadily losing weight, I'm happier, and healthier too. (I started in February of this year at 246 lbs, now 213, that's 33 lbs so far!) I think I'll just continue my daily weighing... yeah.

But after saying all that, Bushranger is correct about them being S-days, and just enjoy the time with your family.

1. The anal comment was specifically about myself.
2. Tracking weight daily is pointless, it really is. Who cares if you can calculate the fluctuations accurately and scientifically or not. If you go up you are going to be annoyed, regardless of anything. Plus this is way too much depth of analysis for anyone who wants to stay sane and is doing the "simple" No-S Diet.
3. The settings goals thing was more in direct reference to making them poorly. I set goals all the time and I agree we do need them, but it's how we set them and use them that is the key issue. Saying "I want to lose x pounds in a week" is not a good goal. Make that a larger number and a few months (at least) though and you have a winner. Unrealistic goals are a quick way to demoralising failures that do nothing but hurt you and make achieving other goals all the more harder.

Of course after saying all that, weighing yourself is a weak way to track results fullstop. A waist measurement or fat pinch test is much more (often painfully) accurate way to gauge meaningful fat loss. Especially if part of you training may result in muscle gain and completely negate the loss of fat as far as the scales are concerned.

Sorry for the misunderstandings. I'll have to articulate my responses better instead of being lazy and rushing them.

Are you all posting here AND daily check-in? I found it a little repetitive and time-consuming...

No daily check-in for me. Not yet anyway. I think my posting may tone down after I get past the initial "newness" of being a forum member and I'll probably focus on just check-ins. Or neither...or both...I really don't know yet. :)

I'm a bit hot and cold with forum posting. Sometimes I like to do a lot and other times I don't want to do much at all. Sometimes I have ideas to share and other times I got nothing! haha!

I guess we're on to the chat part of the challenge. Be sure to edit your first post as often as you can and watch other people's to give accountability and support! Most of us are off to a great start. Keep thinking "summer clothes", thirsty and drinking water, and outside exercise!!! Woohoo! Gotta love summer!

I am posting here and the daily check in but use the daily thread as more of a journal and this to be part of the challenge.

And, for the record, I weigh twice a day. Always have since I can remember.

I put details on my daily checkin - frankly, I think they would bore most people!

Here, I just give general reports or respond to topics of conversation that emerge. Like I'm doing now. :)

But everyone finds their own balance. Do what works best for you.

To weigh in on the weighing issue... ;)

This has come up before. There are two schools of thought that seem to BOTH seem to work, depending on your personality.

1) Weigh infrequently (if at all) so that progress is immediately visible.
2) Weigh very frequently and chart it, so that trend lines show through the normal fluctuations and you get used to seeing those normal ups and downs and are not bothered by them.

People who chose #1 and people who choose #2 seem to have difficulty in understanding the allure of the other approach. :) But really, both ways have worked for different people. I've seen the examples...

What doesn't seem to work is middle-of-the-road techniques. If you weigh often enough that you don't necessarily see progress, nor do you get used to the minor fluctuations. Then, small changes easily de-rail you. (Oh, I've lost a bunch, I can eat anything! Oh, I've gained - this hard work isn't paying off, so I may as well binge and eat what I want!)

I have big scale issues and have settled on weighing daily but recording only Friday mornings because it's my low time of the week. I graph everyother Friday.

I've changed my set up a bunch of times in that dept.

The first 2-3 months on the diet I was weighing very rarely, once a month - once every 2 weeks ...

My routine now is I have an OFFICIAL weigh in every 6 days, more or less ... I can weigh myself any time I want the days before an official weigh in (not every day though.) but it's just because I am too curious, there's no objective to meet, nothing like that ... I note down the result.

Also I never weigh myself the next morning after I had a bad day, I wait at least one full day (or even 2) to make sure I have had a bit of time to correct the situation.

Another rule is to always weigh myself at the same time, in the morning (more or less) so that the conditions are similar.

Cheers !

Marc ;-)

I weight myself all the time, that is, whenever I'm about to jump in the shower and I notice the scale, and I have no idea how much I weight exactly, because the number changes all the time.
I thought that last month I had lost some weight while participating in the challenge, but then I figured I might have not, since at times the scale showed my highest weight and I was bummed.
But then, on the same day, I took my measures in order to buy some clothes and it turns out that I had lost an inch an a half average everywhere.
It never occured to me to measure myself and that is what I'll do from now on.

And you know what?, it's not the first time I lose weight (inches) on NoS, every time I do, I notice but the scale confuses me and if it says that I have not lost any weight, despite of how I feel like, then I unconsciously think that the effort was wasted and I let loose and I gain back what I lost.
But this time, it's impossible to negate, it's there: the measurements don't lie, nor do they fluctuate constanlty, I've lost weight and I'm not discouraged (on the contrary!) and I'll keep doing the effort.

Scales can be very confusing.

Those of us that had a big weekend... have you recovered from it? I tend to really look forward to S days, then really look forward to the N days. Hmmm.... I'm starting to favor the calm mentality of the N days. And I don't get that stuffed-yuck feeling ever on N days.

No, I haven't recovered yet... I've noticed a definite plateau in my scale weight. Friday was a federal holiday for us as well, so 3 S-days really put a damper on my progress... :(

On the bright side, they were wonderful S-days! So I figure it's all good! :D

I'm glad you had wonderful S days! That's the purpose.

I count "recovery" as getting right back on track on Monday, and (if necessary) getting over that bloat-y feeling that I sometimes get when I over-indulge. A reward in itself!

General check in...

Doing fine on N-days thus far. Just started my second week of Couch-to-5K. So far, so good.

Made a cherry pie this weekend, and had one wonderful slice, still warm, topped with Breyers' natural vanilla ice cream. Heaven. That was Sunday, so left the rest for my hubby, who adores my cherry pie. I enjoyed every bite... and have no trouble leaving the rest.

My favorite part of No-S is actually ENJOYING treats instead of feeling guilty.

I did find them - what a treat! Really pleasant to listen to, and I'm so glad I don't have to try to run and watch the second hand on my watch at the same time!

How nice to have someone else to inspire me on this particular goal! :)

I want my green dot. I tried to have a full, but healthy plate so that I do not get crazy. I really want that green dot. So far for the month I have one red day. I know in the begining I am not suppose to swap but I swappped our yearly trip to the amusement park, which could be a vacation "S" day. I think it would be better ro bank the day then promise for the future because Sunday feels far away now. HAHA. I may rethink that for the future.

Doing alright ! I update my habitcal picture once in a while, mostly green with a few yellows, means I'm behavin' now after my so-so start in july.

I have to work hard these days to lose a single pound though. Seems like I have been stuck around 206-207 for a while now ... I am LONGING to see a '5' as the 3rd number, lol ! ;-)

I am a lot more focused then when I started in november of last year and I am struggling to lose 5 pounds in a month, geesh ! Back then it seems I was losing 14 in a month just like that (snapping fingers)

Weight loss is definitely a long term thing, you can't expect to fix everything in a few months, unless you only have 5/10 pounds to lose of course ... :-)

I'm baby stepping toward 205 pounds at the moment, I'll be there in 3 days probably. Mid 205's or better would please me on the 16th in the morning.

Cheers !

Marc ;-)

I'm in! I was on vacation last week, at the Oregon coast. It was gorgeous and I decided to count vacation time as non-crazy S Days. It was great! Lots of walking on the beach, we celebrated three family birthdays and the Fourth of July, and I helped my daughter make her own lemon birthday cake from scratch -- she decorated it as a guinea-pig cake, and it was both adorable and delicious. We had cracked crab and fish-and-chips and oyster stew, and I took the kid horseback riding on the beach on the last day as our grand send-off.

We just (finally!) got a spot in our local community garden, so we planted a bunch of veggies and flowers last night -- very exciting stuff! I expect that will make the exercise component easier for me as well, because we have to walk three blocks there and back to water and weed.

I did have a red on Friday, my first day back at work -- my friends surprised me with belated birthday treats and I think it would be churlish to refuse something like that, so I had a yummy chocolate-covered strawberry and it was well worth it.

Doing fine!.
I've drank my water at every meal so far and have only one failure (curse that cherry pie!).
I've decided to ditch the scale (since I've noticed that I weight less if I'm slightly leaning into the left and more if I lean into the right!) and only measure, but now, I have to resist the ardent urge to measure myself!.
The prospect of measuring at the end of the month keeps me going.

Doing great! My primary goal: avoid inflaming knee pain, is going great! It seems that my plan of alternating biking and walking is doing the trick!

Another July goal of losing 6 pounds seems to be on track.

But I do have 2 RED days for NoS Diet. Hopefully I can keep that number of reds at 2.

July seems to be on the way to becoming my worst month yet.

Meals will be weird today because I am going to my daughter's camp play rehearsal, then picking up my sister who is coming into town for the play tonight, with some free time in between. I think I'll make it a controlled S day.

but no excuses for yesterday, which turned out to be red.

I had been doing well this week. At the pool with the kids I had some pretzels and then it was a scattered dinner time, and then I had a choclate banana. OK I got a red day but I need to turn it off.

Of course! I suggested a 21-day club goal.

By the way, it's Guadopt (G not Q): it comes from "Guatemala" and "adoption," and came out of my daughter's adoption from that country in 1997.

This is day 1!

Hey ya'll! I walked for 30 minutes this evening!

That's my huge progress for this month...so maybe it won't be a total wash-out in the exercise department!

Have had all green N days and no wild S days this month. I'll be anxious to see weight loss for the month when I weigh at the start of August.

Planning on doing an August challenge Renee? Hope so!

Sounds good when people are motivated. Seems many challengers had issues in early july but now a lot of people are vouching to do better ... niiiiiiice !!

I have been doing awesome the past few days personally.

I just weighed myself after another super double green day and I could hardly believe it ... 204.6, at midnight ... this means in the morning, 9.30am, I'll be at 203.0, 203.2, something like that ... wow, my eyes were popping out of their sockets as I weighed at least 1 pound less than I was expecting tonight !! Blowing away my 7/22 objective at least 3 days in advance.

I was surprised I lost that much today, I probably lost over a pound today according to my calculations. Surprise, surprise, I'm making a come back after a so-so start this month, 2 awesome days back to back and I'm super motivated now to ATTACK the fat in the remaining days of the month ... I could lose 7-8 pounds this month if I keep rock n' rollin'

It feels much better to be GOOD and succeeding instead of struggling to make it.

Cheers !

Marc ;-)

Yea! We' ve been waiting to hear that!

I'm planning on not issuing a challenge in August because I'm going to be gone a lot and besides September is my favorite diet month and I'll have a much bigger punch to it if I recharge for the new schedule in September. For those of you who count on my challenges (ha...that sounds funny  ) take this time to test it on your own... keep up with the habitcal and report back to us "challengers" in September. Surprise us! We'll all have a fresh start!

My first reaction to this news was dismay, but on second thought, waiting until September for the next Challenge is a great idea! The Challenges have really helped me to focus on doing No-S right. They've also gotten me to do a written daily check-in, which is useful for being aware of today, as well as for the historical record (e.g. interesting to see how I was doing two months ago).

But I am intrigued with the idea of testing whether I'll keep up the good work without the formal structure of a Challenge. I think I will, but it'll be interesting to see just how that works out. And, if the wheels should come off, the September Challenge will be the safety net!

So thanks again, Reneew -- for a great idea, and for letting us know in advance so we can makes plans. Have a great August!

... Way to go, Mimi!!!!!!

No worries, Winnie, you can issue the challenge for the month of august yourself, or maybe I'll do it.

I want some *CRAZY* challengers though,

I know I'm late but I would like to join! I do a daily check-in that I'll keep for details but love the idea of being accountable here....in front of people  :D

So I will start today & edit this post as I go along...

July 20th: NoS Success/Callanetics
July 21st: NoS Success/Callanetics
July 22nd: Sick Day/ Callanetics
Edited to add: I am going to put this on the backburner for now as I've come down with something so will have difficulty being green (hard enough to do when well and new to program) & also need to make some dietary changes due to health problems so need to work that out, but will definitely be starting fresh in August! I am committed!

I didn't sign up for the July challenge because I figured, what's the use, I'm just going to mess it up and quit again. Great attitude, huh?

Anyway, I decided to just do one day at a time, and now I'm on day 8 of my 21 days. I really want this to work this time. Guess we'll see what happens.

Welcome newbies! Let's all finish off the month with all green and yellows on our habitcals!! Only 11 days! Woohoo!!!

Anyone watching your plates? Mine have been on smaller plates, and I'm starting to think that I wasn't ready for that yet. I used to be all green and I've been coloring my habitcal a bit too colorful this month.

Guadopt... I'm trying again for 21... you'll just have to get there first and hold the door open for me!

I need this... and apparently, so do many others. I have lost my umph and have decided that I will do a challenge in August after all... and it will be a good month :!: Sorry for my indecisiveness... that's the problem with my brain. If I could just make firm, carved-in-stone decisions like Marc instead of written in dust-in-the-wind... I'd be thin again.
So, start gearing up for another challenge... it'll be a good one

This one should be a real challenge for those smarty pants people who have their act together... I can't wait for this one 8) I'll issue it a few days early so we can all mentally prepare.

Just a hint... finish off this month as green as you can be!!!

Good news ! ;-)

Don't stop believin' ... Renee.

"Dont stop believin'
Hold on to the feelin'
Streetlight people"

- Journey

Hey, sometimes it's really hard, even for *ME* ... a few times I was thinking maybe I should stop for a while, not a month, but maybe a week ... bla-bla ... but then I get up the next day and I work hard all over again ...

I don't think I would like to take a break and then pick up later, that would be harder then going non stop. Plus you might pick up some bad habits during your hiatus.... (COOKIES, mmmmm !!) ;-)

Hiatus :
"A break or interruption in the continuity of a work, series, action, etc."
Dictionary.com

Another thing, try to set short term goals ... they lead to the bigger one ! For example I have weekly & monthly objectives to reach ... I didn't start this thinking : "How am I going to lose 90 pounds in a year !! Seems impossible !!" I was thinking about the first month, then the first week ... you go from one small goal to the next and then one day ... your major goal is within reach ! :-)

You tell yourself, ok, I want to lose 50 pounds in a year ... then you break it down, a bit more for the first months ... 5 pounds for the first 4 months and then 4 pounds for the next 6, then 3 pounds for the next 2 ... there you go, 50 pounds down, but you work on the first 5 pounds only during that 1st month, and even the first week, 1.2 pound short term goal for the first week ... then you don't quit of course, if you have trouble one day you work harder the next, that's what I'm doing. Working out helps a great deal too, even if it's just 20 minutes per day, do that 6 times a week while following your diet, I'm sure you'll lose that 1.2 pound per week, Ren.

Cheers !

Marc ;-)

Okay, with much trepidation, I'm joining in the last week of this challenge. I've tried No-s at least three or four times previously and failed. I think the main culprit is that I can't seem to stay in the mental place that says "Just relax and let the weight fall off naturally." I catch a glimpse of myself in a three-way mirror (the walls of my gym's aerobic room are all mirrors, so I have a nice view of my flab bouncing around) or I start getting panicky that I'll have to buy a ton of larger-sized clothes, and then I just quit because I think that I won't really lose weight with No-S. I know that's silly because I haven't really given it a good chance yet. I wish I could just trust the program enough to stick with it.

Anyhow, I've been on program since Sunday. I do have a mod, though: I've decided not to have traditional S days. Those were big trouble for me my last few attempts on No-S. So, I'm allowing myself 2 - 3 No-S "events" per week. For example, my husband and I usually go out to a nice restaurant once a week, so that meal (appetizer, entree, and dessert) is one No-S event for me. For some reason, this approach appeals to me more than traditional S days, which I seem to treat as free-for-alls.

Sorry for the longwinded post. I look forward to completing 21 days!

Yeah, it was a nightmare ... drinking the regular Pepsi ... that was a bad dream for me ... lol ! Later it was making me laugh too, so it's all good. ;-)

I was trying to think about how many minutes I would have to work out before burning all those extra calories when I woke up ... phew !!

I remember in the dream I was yelling when I found out it was regular Pepsi. not Diet Pepsi ... I was yelling in anger and pouring it all down in the sink ... (what everyone should do in real life actually .... well, maybe except for the part about the PRIMAL SCREAM ... that's just what *I* would do !)

Cheers !

Thank you, Reneew!.
I'm writing to tell you that thanks to your challenges, I've lost another inch or so overall this month and for that I'm deeply thankful to you and to everyone here (especially Reinhard).
I also wanted to comment that, while I've gone down a size and lost an average of two inches everywere, my scale still doesn't show much change at all and there is no muscle weight to add to the equation, since my faulty back has kept me barely moving. :?
I reiterate that, if I wouldn't be measuring, I would think that not much progress has been done and I would be very discouraged and possibly getting far too many reds in the calendar.
So, remember once again: scale weight is but one part of the equation!.

My update: Still at 137/8.. Grr. Weight loss has stalled. On the upside, I have a healthy BMI of 23.7 now (though some people don't really like using BMI anymore). It used to be 25.7. I am doing well with my 3 meals, one snack version of No-S :).

That's so cool that you are really reading ... adds another special layer of incentive to your Challenges!

And yikes! Do I take S-Days? You bet I do! But my vacation for the first two weeks of July was such a gak (Snacks, Sugar, and Seconds to a fare-thee-well, kind of the Yes-S program) that for the rest of July, I just haven't been able to get up any enthusiasm for any of the S's. I'll get over that soon, however. In "normal" months, for me, the foundation of No-S is S-Days -- if I have them, I can do N-Days.

Looking forward to the AC (August Challenge), and thanks so much ... the Challenges really help me!

With one more day to go for July, I'm down another pound and a half -- even though the first 10 days of the month I was on vacation and celebrating three family birthdays.

I've been doing this for seven months (No S, not vacationing, alas) and at this point it really is so brainlessly easy. I never thought I wouldn't want to eat after dinner!

renee, thanks so much for the birthday wishes! And yeah, I'm still boring.

7/31 = Red (Sheesh! Wasn't thinking and had seconds on coleslaw! Minor, but it's still seconds, and seconds = red)

July 2009 -- certainly not my best month, but I think I've learned something from the Vacation Disaster: I can still run amok with food, BUT I can also get back on track very quickly with No-S. In the future, will beware of vacations (as in "be aware of what can happen"), but also have more confidence in my ability to No-S wisely.

Thanks ~reneew for these challenges! Fun, and a great help!
