Quotes

Post by tarantinofan » Fri Jul 17, 2009 2:24 am

Hey everyone! I found a few quotes that have been helping me along my No S Journey and might be helpful to those reading. I'm just a newbie (I just formally started No S around 2 weeks ago) but I think we could all use some inspiration once in a while :)

1) "I will act now. I will act now. I will act now. Henceforth, I will repeat these words each hour, each day, everyday, until the words become as much a habit as my breathing, and the action which follows becomes as instinctive as the blinking of my eyelids. With these words I can condition my mind to perform every action necessary for my success. I will act now. I will repeat these words again and again and again. I will walk where failures fear to walk. I will work when failures seek rest. I will act now for now is all I have. Tomorrow is the day reserved for the labor of the lazy. I am not lazy. Tomorrow is the day when the failure will succeed. I am not a failure. I will act now. Success will not wait. If I delay, success will become wed to another and lost to me forever. This is the time. This is the place. I am the person. " -Og Mandino

2)"Recognition is the greatest motivator." -Gerald C. Eakedale

3) "We are made to persist. That is how we find out who we are." -Tobias Wolff

4) "Don't waste yourself in rejection, nor bark against the bad, but chant the beauty of the good." -Ralph Waldo Emerson

5) "Nothing astonishes men so much as common sense and plain dealing." -Ralph Waldo Emerson

6) "Common sense is genius dressed in its working clothes" -Ralph Waldo Emerson

I clearly like my Emerson haha. He's actually my favorite writer, so I just had to bring in some of his wisdom. The other quotes I found online. I hope these help someone along their No S path. I know that they have helped me quite a bit when I've been tempted to falter.

Any way, good luck to everyone this week! I hope we all reach our goals.

Two goals of mine this week: a) weighing in the 120 range and b) having my first 100% green week.

Some No S goals that I want to reach in the near future: a) join the 21 day club and b) weighing 115-120

Good idea for a thread.

"We cannot change the cards we are dealt, just how we play the hand." - Randy Pausch

I have my own variation of this quote that I feel more aptly describes how I choose to live. The idea being that we can change at least some of the aspects and circumstances of our lives. It makes more sense in reference to 5 card draw instead of common casino poker games.

"You cannot change the hand you are dealt, but you can draw new cards."

Hi, Ari,
I love the Mandino quote...will add it to my own list to read over several times in the coming weeks. A lot to think about!
You're a week ahead of me, but I'm coming!

Putting one foot in front of the other, Bushranger...I love your "doesn't matter how high the mountain is" quote. It's especially apropos (is that the right word?) as my oldest son just hiked Mt. Whitney last weekend, 14, 505 ft. elevation, with 99 switchbacks as the trail rises 1620 feet in 2.2 miles. It's his second successful attempt (got stormed out another time) and he says it is simple to climb...just keep walking.

I came up with that one myself; although I'm not sure if I subconsciously remember it from somewhere. :?:

Two of my most favorite quotes (and countless others) come straight from the Bible:

"For as he thinketh in his heart, so is he..." Proverbs 23:7

"Touch not; taste not; handle not;" Colossians 2:21 (This one is great to keep you from snacking! :wink: )

Sow a thought, reap an act;
Sow an act, reap a habit;
Sow a habit, reap a character;
Sow a character, reap a destiny.
--William Thakeray (although I saw it written in a couple of different ways with different sources . . . )

And . . .

We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit. --Aristotle

Great quotes, BigE.

It is kind of a positive response to the "for want of a nail" poem where the kingdom is lost in the end. I told my children over and over that each thought and action was important. I need to remind myself!

I added the Aristotle quote to my quote files!

Thanks for sharing.

I think Kenny Rogers said it best:
You got to know when to hold 'em, know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away and know when to run
You never count your money, when you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin', when the dealin's done
Every gambler knows that the secret to survive is
Knowing what to throw away and knowing what to keep
'Cos every hand's a winner and every hand's a loser
"That which we persist in doing becomes easier for us to do. Not that the nature of the thing itself has changed but our power to do it is increased." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson

These are wonderful...

Bushranger...I really like your variation...

Mimi...You just can't beat the Truth, can you!

I still love my sig line..."Nothing worthwhile is every easy." My kids are certainly tired of hearing it, but I can imagine them telling their own kids the same thing someday.

Not only do we get to draw new cards, occasionally we get to put one in the discard pile!!

And I'm a fan of "The Gambler", but you really made my day, Wosnes, with your signature quote:

"That which we persist in doing becomes easier for us to do. Not that the nature of the thing itself has changed but our power to do it is increased." -- Ralph Waldo Emerson"

It is soooo true. I've been NoSing 5 weeks now and it is easier and I feel the power level of my ability to do it rising.

Have typed the quote up, given it a border and printed it out. What a great reminder and encouragement to persevere! Thanks for starting my day off!
