The worst thing you've ever tried while "on a diet"

Post by Over43 » Sat Aug 22, 2009 11:57 pm

This is true confession. I had read about a "tuna fast" (eat nothing but tuna, and drink water) on a bodybuilding board probably when the internet first started. So how long ago was this? 1994? 1995?

So, I gave it a whirl. People were drinking "tuna shakes", (I couldn't have made that up if I'd wanted to...), two cans of tuna blended with water. So, I tried one. And because my wife kept harrassing me about it, I drank the whole thing, just to show her.

Saying it was awful doesn't even begin to decribe...

I stopped by Jimmy John's last night and along with a Diet Coke, had my first tuna sandwich since the day of the infamous tuna shake.

When I was in high school (and really did not need to lose weight), I tried the infamous Grapefruit Diet, but get this: I've always DESPISED grapefruit. I can't imagine how I ate mainly just grapefruit for an entire week. My parents were terrific, but they were so easy to fool that I managed to do this without them noticing for a week.

Finally, though, a lady who worked in the cafeteria told my dad that I'd been declining lunch the whole week (we lived in a really small town). One morning my dad said to me, "Mrs. [can't remember her name] says that you haven't been eating your lunches. Why?" Me: "I'm on a grapefruit diet." Dad: "Well, stop it." (My dad was a man of few words).

I've never been so happy to be told what to do! I haven't eaten a grapefruit since then.

Over43, I think your tuna diet sounds even worse than my grapefruit diet--LOL!

Tuna shake. Oh, my. I am feeling nauseated thinking about it. I like tuna with mayo and chopped onion but that's about it.

I think the worst thing I ever tried was a tofu and sugar free Jello dessert. I didn't know back then that dessert was for special occasions and if I ate it infrequently (not just less often), it wouldn't do me any harm over the long haul. What I wanted was a dessert that I could have frequently, whenever I wanted as much as I wanted.

Tuna shakes? Yikes - even the TunaFishKid wouldn't touch that!

I guess the silliest thing I did was eat salads with only vinegar for dressing, when I did Deal-A-Meal about 20 years ago. I remember eating huge bowls of lettuce and vinegar (to try and fill myself up for no calories) and going on about how "delicious" and "refreshing" it was.

That is so totally disgusting.... :o

The worst thing I've ever tried was powdered peanut butter...you mix it with water and it only has 25 calories per tablespoon.

It too was totally disgusting!

And because I ordered it over the Internet, I bought FOUR jars...yikes!

We're all different. Image
While Bell Plantation defatted powdered peanut butter
doesn't taste as good as my Trader Joe's normal peanut butter,
it has a definite purpose in my life...
for example I find it a great way to add low-cal protein and peanut butter taste to Smoothies,
and on those days after I've overdone it and then really have to cut down,
I very much enjoy spreading it ..
together with some Smuckers strawberry preserves made with Splenda
on a slice of whole wheat bread.
Not only did I ...like you...buy 4 jars on the internet
I've repeated that order several times.

Oh, I once bought a meatless hotdog that I lovingly grilled with great expectations and right after my family refused the second bite...I tried it and laughed at how bad it was. We all tried to smother it with all of the toppers we normally love. Yuck. It tasted beany, and though I even love beans and cook with TVP all of the time, I just couldn't eat it. We then gave it to our dog, who by the way eats rocks if you let her, and she wouldn't even eat it. We left it in her kennel for days and she refused. I later bought the burgers and my family is still laughing at the thing getting freezer burn in the freezer.

Ooooh I love Smuckers Strawberry with Splenda.. yum yum! Except I never finish the jar because I hardly ever have bagels or toast or anything like that.

I don't know about the worst thing I've done on a diet though.. I've never tried anything crazy. NoS/calorie counting is the only thing I've been able to do for more than - and this is no exaggeration - 2 days. I can tell after just a day or two if a diet will work for me.

Oh but the worst food I've ever had were my father in law's turkey bacon. Ew! They are like slabs of tasteless cardboard.

Well, not so much on a "diet" as a health kick while my husband was deployed. I had just made some sort of beans/sprout mash to spread on bread and used it to make Mae a bunch of sandwiches to take on a field trip to the Santa Barbara Mission with a picnic in the park to follow.

It was disgusting and I had to endure the visible pain and longing in all my children's eyes as their friends munched on bologna and cheese sandwiches.

That was more than 15 years ago and I've yet to live that down. Even the youngest two (13 and 15 now) give me a hard time about it and they weren't EVEN BORN YET.

Too bad I didn't know about NoS back then--it would have been an S day for sure! :-)

I used to make "sandwiches" on Weight Watchers with "light" bread (which is full of pencil shavings or something, as far as I could tell from the texture), fat-free "mayo," and "light" pasteurized-process "cheese" food slices. Those were pretty dire.

Lunch should not require irony quotation marks.

Now that might be the best way to get rid of my four jars (two of which are chocolate peanut butter)! :D

Thanks, BrightAngel - that might not be so bad!!

Too true!

And tuna fish shake sounded pretty awful, too.

My worst thing was the cabbage soup. Also cans of Slimfast. Vile.
