September challenge!

Post by ~reneew » Sun Aug 30, 2009 1:14 pm

* * * I'm issuing a challenge for you to have an excellent month...
and to work on one habit that needs to change. * * *

- *Remember* to only post once on the first page so that we can all get in at the top. This makes it easier to keep tabs on eachother.
- Please re-read that last one, some people don't get it.
- edit your first post all month so we can all keep tabs on eachother.
- after Sept. 2nd we will continue posting at the bottom for encouragement and fun.
- write your plan and habit that you'll be working on. Pick your toughest problem and the "excellent month" may just follow automatically.
- good luck and have fun with it!

I'm in.

My plan: Strict strict strict (because I'm a cheater when it comes to diets)...
plain ol' vanilla No S with out sprinkles and I'm hittin' the top item on my hit list... weekends! I still jump on that rollercoaster every darn weekend! Usually up at least 5, then down again during the week. If I could just stay on the ground, I'd be thin by now. I want to ground myself this September!!! If anyone has any input on my rollercoaster S days, I'm taking advice on my check-in.
Lets go!!!!!!!!!

September
1 green and I am so excited to be starting a new month and it's fall!
2 green cuz I'm on a streak and motivated at the same time.
3 green and I'm mentally preparing for the weekend. I think I'll go re-read the S days gone wild thread again. I could always try duct tape.
4 it'll be green of course because I'm on the right track... hopefully not the hidden rollercoaster track
5 S day
6 S day
7 S day I had higher hopes for this weekend including lower case s days (just s events), but overall I didn't do all that bad.
8 green
9 green
10 green and great! I've been doing double green days and it helps to compensate for my rollercoaster weekends.
11 green of course.
12 S day and definitely not lime.
13 S day
14 just barely called a green. The kids have no school today.
15 red failure ... cookies again
16 double green
17 green
18 green
19 S day
20 S day
21 green
22 green
23 green
24 green and tomorrow is weigh day so I'm being a very good girl today!
25 green day and I weighed in at 6 lost this month! I met my goal of 5 pounds this month. I am so pumped!!
26 S day
27 S day
28 green
29 green and my favorite jeans don't fit!!!! woohoo!
30 green and very "in a good groove" right now!

To summarize my month, I've been doing awesome during the week, but weekends with everyone around is still hard, but the damage isn't so severe... still working on it.

I had to make cookies (the 24th) for several events and instead of making several different things and snitching my way through the whole afternoon I... made one tripple batch (of my famous ginger cookies) and I didn't even snitch one single solitary nibble of the stuff. Now let me tell you, I've been baking cookies since I was 9 and cookie dough is my favorite snitch in the entire blue and green earth... and I had not even one tiny crumb!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
yea me! color this bold green!

I put my photo on my sparkpage on sparkpeople (same name) since I can't load on here... I'm electronically challenged.
If there are any hypnotists out there who can make me believe that Saturday is Tuesday I'd really appreciate it!

I'm not going to issue a challenge for October...(sorry) I seem to be doing a more extreme version of no S and I'm trying to not think about food so much. So for October I'm trying a month without a challenge. I will check in though, just on my daily.

September is exercise month for me, at least 5 times a week. I've been doing the No S diet and the eating/drinking part is going fine, now to get moving.
Okay. shovelgloving, going to the gym, stacking wood, and hiking will all count as credit for the day. (Walking or letter boxing will count if I deem them strenuous enough, or done long enough.)
Sept 1--1 hr. 45 min. letter boxing:up and down some hills
Sept 2-- Shovelglove and weights
Sept 3-- Shovelglove and exercises
Sept 4 -- Shovelglove
Sept 5 --exempt
Sept 6 --hike
Sept 7 --short hike
Sept 8 --exercise class and hike
Sept 9 --Shovelglove
Sept 10 --Shovelglove
Sept 11 --Shovelglove and weights
Sept 12 --exempt
Sept 13 --exempt
Sept 14 -- Failure
Sept 15 --execise class
Sept 16 --shovelglove
Sept 17 -- Shovelglove
Sept 18 --sick
Sept 19 -- exempt
Sept 20 --exempt
Sept 21 --still sick
Sept 22 --Shovel glove
Sept 23 --lawn mowing, push mower
Sept 24 --Shovel glove
Sept 25 -- Failure
Sept 26 --exempt
Sept 27 --exempt
Sept 28 --Shovel glove
Sept 29 --Used(pushed/pulled/wrestled) rototiller
Sept 30 --Shovel glove

Not all my shovel glove days were for the full 14 minutes.

I'm in. I have a few goals for this month, but I'm not sure how they'll pan out as school is starting back and my eating habits will be different. I think a lot of the things that have caused so much difficulty for July and August will become easier when I get back. We'll see...

Anyway, I'll make some goals, and change them if I need to:
1) Follow No S eating habits
2) a week from Monday-Monday compliance
3) 21 day compliance
4) No bingeing (or less than last month. I binged 7 times)
5) No more red days (or less than last month. I had 6 red days)
6) exercise on N days for 1/2 hour
7) lose weight. I have no idea what number to put because I'm going back to school. I'm just going to say 128 and if I need to change the number then I will...

I'm in too- 5 darn red days in August, and very little exercise. For me I KNOW that exercise makes a difference so my goal fo this month is to do some form of exercise on five days a week...and to carry on trying to trust in this system as I'm truly having issues trusting that I can have what I want within a very few rules! But exercise is the main focus for me in September.
D x

Update

You know what- I've decided against participation this time round. There are some really great people on this forum with a diversity of opinions and who generally have much to offer- But I have decided to pull out of participating - at least for now- at least until the recent negativity has diminished. It's actually quite demoralising to see people bash each other.

I'm responsible for what I put in my mouth, how much I exercise, and when I fail, it's down to me. I get that. However as someone who has struggled for over 20 years to keep within a decent BMI and fitness level and is now finding it harder than ever I also recognise that the simplistic approach of "just eat less, shut up and do more" mooted by some in response to others who have struggled may work for some, but I for one have habits that are tied in to much more complex issues and if I can't feel that I can at least air these without fear of being bashed by someone on this forum, where can I? Although I have to say that although I have not yet been on the receiving end of any of this, I've read enough to see that it wouldn't be long until I do as I would have to make my opinion felt soon.....so I'm going to back off for now.
Have a great month everyone! Hope you are all successful in your challenges

I'll pass this time.
I have a bad case of acid reflux and I'm trying to get it under control, as it is, that's all there is in my mind when I think about eating and I'm frankly playing by ear.
Regular NoS for me this month.
But good luck to you all!.

My goal is to get this sweet tooth under control.
I will have ONLY one dessert-ish item on non S days.
And it has to fit on my plate of food.
And it has to be eaten with one of my meals, not as a snack.
Habits are at first cobwebs, then cables.

My goal is to have only 2 NWS days in September. I have exercise pretty well in hand but really need to get serious about Vanilla No-S. October is a very hard month for me, my Birthday, my husband's our anniversary and our yearly beach trip take over three weeks of the month. So I need to come through September feeling strong and on habit.

Still here, still kicking
The first week of September was abysmal and I almost gave up on September. Then I realized how crazy that is and I am now the proud owner of a good green filled week. I don't know why this week was easier, I was very busy and I found a place where I was mindful of the plan but not thinking about it every moment, don't look directly at it or it will disappear.

September
1- red 13- 25-
2-red 14- 26
3-red 15- 27-
4-red 16- 28
5- yellow 17- 29
6- yellow 18- 30
7-green 19-
8-green 20-
9-green 21-
10-green 22-
11-green 23
12- yellow 24

My ankle is not allowing for much in the way of activity and I am trying to let it heal and stop worrying about the days of exercise I have missed.

You guys are so inspiring!

I'm in! Not sure if I will be working on anything in particular other than strengthening NoS habits, keeping up with daily exercise, and not weighing other than on the first three days of the month.

Mimi

Sept. 1 - According to this morning's weigh-in I'm down another 2.66 pounds - making a grand total of 9.5 pounds since May (averaging a 2.4 pound loss each month)!!! I'm thrilled to say the least. I'm so excited to be slowly melting down to my body's optimum weight - whatever that might end up being.
Now, of course, these figures may change slightly as I weigh-in tomorrow and Thursday and take an average to account for weight fluctuations - but there was a loss after August's Challenge!
Green for exercise and NoS
Sept. 2, 3 - Green for exercise and NoS
I'm NOT recording a weight loss/gain for last month - ugly story. See my check-in thread for details!
Sept. 4 - took an S-event (ice cream at the fair) green for exercise
Sept. 5 - exempt green for exercise
Sept. 6 - exempt for both NoS and exercise
Sept. 7 - exempt
Sept. 8 - green for NoS and exercise
Sept. 9 - green for NoS and exercise
Sept. 10 - green for NoS and exercise
Sept. 11 - green for NoS and exercise
Sept. 12 - exempt
Sept. 13 - exempt
Sept. 14 -green for NoS - but no more exercise due to severe injury. See my check-in thread
Sept. 15 - green for NoS
Sept. 16 - green for NoS
Sept. 17 - green for NoS
Seot. 18 - taking an S-event - ate a piece of delicious pie
SEPT. 19
SEPT. 20
Sept. 21 - green for NoS
Sept. 22 - green for NoS
Sept. 23 - green for NoS
Sept. 24 - green for NoS
Sept. 25 - green for NoS
SEPT. 26
SEPT. 27

Sept. 28 - RED - ate two snacks in ADDITION to the small sweet I've been allowing - first red day since mid-May...
Sept. 29 - green for NoS
Sept. 30 -

Count me in. I tried to do the challenge last month but with several trips (including camping), and limited computer access I didn't do so well. This month we get our routines back, all of us are up and out to school and work and that will make it easier! So here is my plan!

Mods to make Friday and Sunday sdays. I am not working on Fridays and that will my day to do things for myself and recharge which might include a visit to my favorite coffee place!

I will do some form of exercise everyday. Either formal exercise or a hike with my family. Just keep moving!

In. :)

This month's focus: Eliminating BLTs (bites, licks, and tastes) which tend to creep in around and after dinner. It's a long stretch where I prepare food, eat dinner, then put it a away and make lunches.

Or, in S-language... no Snitching!

I'm in.

Gained two pounds on vacation.

Goal: vanilla no-S, controlled S days.

September 1: success
September 2: success
September 3: planning for an S-event tonight, ice cream social at my daughter's school: one serving (one plain scoop of Breyer's vanilla ice cream). Back to basics for dinner at California Pizza Kitchen. Success
September 4: qualified success
September 5: back to pre-vacation weight! Pretty good S day, though I went pretty compulsive on a six-pack of good humour chocolate eclairs, eating the cake and white ice cream part of all six...
September 6: over the top S day. Marked it red on my habitcal.
September 7: no plans for the day so N day, success
September 8: back to school for my daughter but took the day off to do errands, etc. success
September 9: success
September 10: success
September 11: success
September 12-13: S days gone somewhat wild, though less so than last weekend. So maybe the reporting works to some extent.
September 14: success
September 15: success
September 16: success
September 17: success
Have a doctor's appointment tomorrow and will be weighed...(turns out they couldn't find my file at first so when I was weighed, she couldn't tell me what I'd weighed before
September 18: success
September 19: Pretty good S day
September 20: S day a bit overboard
September 21: successs
September 22: successs
September 23: I'm afraid it's going to have to be failure today. Didn't have a great lunch so was starving for dinner. While I made it, I ate my daughter's turkey sandwich that she hadn't eaten for lunch. It couldn't be my whole meal because it was small (one slice bread) but I guess I could have filled a plate with other stuff in addition to the sandwich. But I wanted the regular dinner too...I guess I could pretend it was meant to be part of the dinner (it would have fit on the plate) but who am I kidding? On the other hand, I have to be really careful now not to drive the car off the cliff. P.S. succeeded in not eating snacks or sweets for the rest of the evening.
September 24: success
September 25: success
September 26: over the top S day
September 27: would have been over the top S day but I started not feeling well in the evening so skipped dinner.
September 28: success
September 29: success
September 30: success

A pretty good month except for S days...Plateaud weight wise pretty much within a 4-5 pound band but it beats gaining. I am sort of low-carbing for now, lots of veggies and protein, maybe stay away from the sweets for a bit on weekends too.

I'll be using my personal check in thread to update on any remarkable daily/weekly events, news etc.. But mainly I'm just going to use habit cal and then update at the end of the month on this thread.
My goal is to have 100 percent compliance on NoS and 14 mins of daily exercise on N days. I'm also still tracking my "No late night eating", and I'm happy to say that I've done very well recently with that.
I'm putting a lot of energy into that one, but I know it's the one, along with adding exercise regularly, which makes or breaks whether I gain, maintain, or lose weight.
I have a good feeling it's gonna be a great month! :D

In! [I am back after a long, long time]

My goals are:

1.) Re-boot with Vanilla No-S, with the added sprinkle of mindful sugar consumption on weekends. Hypoglycemia requires the extra attention. I like the idea of having Sugar events tied with a meal.

2.) Posting on the BB at least twice weekly.

:)

Goal: 21 days of conquering the evening snack time. I will allow a fruit serving or an occasional glass of wine.

This is big. I'll keep it simple.

Good luck and heavy willpower to all!

I think I'll join you! My son turns 2 at the end of October, and I'd really like to be at least 127 by the time of his birthday. 127 was what I weighed when I found out I was pregnant with him. I gained 52 pounds during my pregnancy. I reached my new low of 128 last week, so I think I can do it.
I realize this goal is small, but I was stuck in the plateau of 129-131 for about 3 months, so hitting 128 last week made me realize that I CAN break this plateau after all.
If I do hit 127 before his birthday, then I think I'll aim to be at about 123-125 by his birthday, but I'll start with 127 first.

(8/31) I started today, since it's Monday. Not a bad day. My husband is home from work this week, so I'm going to treat the time he's off as moderate S days. My one indulgence for today was lightly buttered and salted air popped popcorn after dinner. Exercise: Element Ballet Conditioning. 1 hour stroller walk.
(9/1) A challenging eating day, but I didn't do horribly. My husband, son, and I went to the beach! We had KFC for lunch and dinner, but neither of my meals were overly excessive. I felt full, but not stuffed. I did have some fudge after dinner. :D Exercise: Self: Bikini Ready Fast, lots of walking on the beach.
(9/2) Still doing moderate S days while my husband is off from work. I had some fudge and a mocha today, but I plated the fudge with lunch and the mocha with dinner, so I don't think my eating was too bad. I'm really struggling with the urge to step on the scale, but I think it's smart to wait until next week, when my eating gets back to normal. Exercise: 25 minutes on recumbent bike, 10 Minute Solutions Pilates bun and thigh and flexibility segments.
(9/3) I had a crazy, mixed up day, so I ate in several segments today, but I think I still did the equivalent of keeping everything to one plate. Exercise: Quick Blast Calorie Blast TBB A,B,C and Quick Blast Fat Burner Upper Body Blast A and B.
(9/4) Definitely a mark it and move on day. Oh well. Exercise: Ultimate Body Quick and Incredible Abs, 2 segments for a total of 30 minutes.
(9/5) Much better eating day! Exercise: 25 minute downhill walk to my local downtown area, lots of walking downtown, 25 minute walk uphill back to my house.
(9/6) S day, I will ease back into more Vanilla No S on Tuesday, when my husband goes back to work. I'll also start weighing myself again tomorrow morning. Exercise: Rest (my Sabbath day from exercising)
(9/7) Eating was pretty good! Almost back to normal. Exercise: 3 segments of Yoga for Beginners, Standing Abs from Quick and Incredible Abs, 35 minute stroller walk
(9/8) Another good eating day! Exercise: 4 segs of Pilates Perfect Body
(9/9)I'm checking in early, but so far, my eating has been good. I've lost almost all of the weight I gained while my husband was off. Exercise: 2 miles of Fast Start 4 miles, phase one abs from Lose the Belly Flab, standing stretch from Beginner Stretch
(9/10) Success again! Exercise: UBB C and D, buns phase 1 and abs phase 2 from Lose Belly Flab, flexibility seg. from 10 Min Sol Yoga
(9/11) Failure with a capital F. I'll mark it and move on. Exercise: 3 segments of Blast Belly Fat, 1 seg. of Cardio for Beginners
(9/12) Bad, bad, bad! Exercise: Rest
(9/13) Much better! Exercise: Rest
(9/14) Success! Exercise: Quickblast Total Body Blasts A,B,C
(9/15) Failure.): Mark it and move on. Exercise: UBB A and B, Butt Blast phase 2 from Lose Belly Flab, stretch from 10 Min Sol Yoga
(9/16) Success! Exercise: 10 min of Walk the Walk 1 mile (warm up), TBB A and B, Abs Blast A, stretch from Yoga for Beginners
(9/17) Success! Exercise: Abs Blast B, bun and thigh plus stretch from 10 Min Sol Yoga
(9/18) I'm back to my low weight of 128! 127, here I come!
(9/19) S day
(9/20) S day Both S days were pretty moderate, which is real progress for me! Exercise: 1hr15 min stroller walk
(9/21) I think I would call this day a yellow. I did eat slightly more at dinner than I should have, but it still (barely) fit on my plate. Exercise:None
(9/22) I suppose I should call this day a failure. I did eat more than I should have at Bible study. I kept it to mostly fruit, but I also had 1/2 a muffin and a danish along with coffee with creamer. I'm noticing that I can eat a boatload of food several times a week and maintain at 129 (which is 2 pounds below my top weight in my healthy weight range), so I have to decided if I want to keep trying to lose weight, or just stay where I am. Exercise: TBB A,B,C, LBB A and B, UBB A and B
(9/23) Failure. Exercise: None
(9/24) Better than the past two days. I was also back down to 128 today, in spite of my excessive eating (???). If I start doing better, I wonder if I could get to 127? Exercise: 10 Min Sol. Pilates total body, abs, bun and thigh, stretch
(9/25) Success! Exercise: MBB A,B,C, UBB C and D, Abs Blast B
(9/26) S day and a disaster of one at that. I ate a whole funnel cake at my local fair, and I was literally sick for the rest of the evening.
(9/27) A much better S day!
(9/28) Success so far! 2 meals down, one to go. Exercise: TBB A,B,C

Find other non alchololic drinks to enjoy and throw them into the mix when you are out socialising.
A virgin bloody mary looks the same as a regular one, so you can still look cool with a drink in your hand, if it's social pressure that's causing you to cave.
Have a great September everyone!!

sporkfancier's September challenge

Post by sporkfancier » Wed Sep 02, 2009 6:34 pm

August wasn't a great month for compliance. :(

Goal #1: No red days on No-S
Goal #2: No red days on Shovelglove

I think that's enough with school starting up again. I'm teaching 6 classes this term, so staying compliant will be struggle enough!

Sept 1: Success
Sept 2: Success but only barely on the shovelglove front--I forgot to do it until just before bed and couldn't complete the whole thing.
Sept 3: Success
Sept 4: Success
Sept 5: Exempt
Sept 6: Exempt
Sept 7: Exempt Labour Day
Week 1 Results: Success. We went to visit good friends over the long weekend, and I could indulge in the merriment without reservation. Woohoo!

Sept 8: Success
Sept 9: Success
Sept 10: Success
Sept 11: Success
Sept 12: Exempt. Weighed in this morning at 188.2. This actually represents a gain of a few pounds over my lowest weight recently, but that was a while ago (before the September challenge, anyway).
Sept 13: Exempt
Sept 14: Success
Week 2 Results: Success. Couldn't have gone better. Really took it easy on Sunday, too, as it was my annual 5k cross-country run. Just some fruit after the race and a handful of sun chips after supper.

Sept 15: Success. Weird. At supper, I ate two perogies and wasn't hungry anymore. I didn't eat much at lunch either. Perhaps I'm coming down with something?
Sept 16: Success. Weighed myself this morning. 184.4 lbs. Second lowest I've been since I was a teenager.
Sept 17: Success
Sept 18: Success
Sept 19: Exempt. Weighed myself this morning (Saturday is my "official" weigh-in. 184.0lbs!
Sept 20: Exempt
Sept 21: Success. I ran 5K on the treadmill today, too!
Week 3 Results: Success. Man did I make myself sick this weekend. Monday was a rough morning--why did I eat a bowl of chips at 11:30PM on Sunday night?!

Sept 23: Success
Sept 24: Success
Sept 25: Success. Only technically. I had a small bowl of Doritos after midnight.
Sept 26: Exempt
Sept 27: Exempt
Sept 28: Success
Sept 29: Success
Sept 30: Success
Week 4 Results: Success! I weighed myself this morning and I'm down to a new low of 181.6 lbs. What a great month!

End result: Two gold medals for shovelglove and no-s! Thanks for the challenge ~reneew!

I'm glad I'm in the challenge this time.
Me and Richie were really thinking of having some treats, and I might have caved in, under normal circumstances, because they sound really good right now, but I have had three good days and almost the weekend, so I just said.. "NO!! I'm not messing up my green week!!!" and we got fruit and some nice stuff for dinner instead!! :D
Yay!!!!
But I'm dying for 5:00 to come tomorrow!!! (that's when S days start around here..Friday after 5...)

bluebunny! Dude! Could you consider narrowing your pics? I have to scroll way to the right to read eveyone's posts on this thread now!

And don't forget to celebrate your goal weight when you reach it! Don't keep resetting it lower and lower till you disappear!

I'd say celebrate big time, take a break from all that training. Get to know the new you awhile before you decide you need a new weight goal. Who knows, maybe you'll decide you need more muscle rather than lose fat, or perhaps you'll want to stress flexibility. That's where I'm headed. I think a good flexible body will do me more good as I age than excessive muscles.

My eating has been much better the past few days! I've already lost almost all of the weight I gained while my husband was off last week.
Kodama, I agree with you about flexibility! I've been adding a lot more stretching and yoga to my routine lately, because my muscles have been SO tight (and I'm only 34).

I just realized that I'm on day 29 of no reds. I blew right past 21. Woo hoo! I'm now going for 2 consecutive 21 days. It is so much easier when school is on. I need to get a grip when the family is around. At least I don't binge anymore. :D We need to encourage eachother to bump up the thread.

Yay, ~reneew!

I am working on BLT's this month and have had some reds. (I was trying to hold to them even on weekends, but am re-considering. Too hard.) I am surprised by how entrenched this habit is. Still, the general direction is toward improvement, so I'm pleased with progress on the Challenge... and will keep working on it!

Still jogging regularly, which was my last goal. I'm going to keep it up this semester and then evaluate, I've decided. (This goal still gets attention - not quite on auto-pilot.)

I had a couple of really bad eating days on Friday and Saturday, but I got back on track yesterday, and I'm having a great eating day today so far. I also started a fitness challenge on a different site, so that should motivate me to stay on track with my eating.

Watch those BLTs! They are sneaky fellas! I used to not see them until after a hit and run. I still battle them on S days too, but good solid green days are easier now. I call them snitches.

Thanks, Kod.

Sorry I didn't see your message until today, I only visit once a week or two now to update my pics ... so I didn't know the pics were causing problems.

I fixed this just now. ;-)

My final goal is 188.0 on nov. 1st. 2009

That would be a 92 pound loss within a year. I don't plan on changing that any more.

My original goal was 190.0 but I guess I needed an extra challenge for the final month, heh. I'll be done with the weight loss after that. I'll work on maintaining in the high 180's, maybe getting more muscles while remaining at the same weight, losing fat and getting more muscles in the future.

I read somewhere the first 2 years after you've lost a lot of weight are the toughest because that's the time your body needs to get used to the new weight. So it's easier to gain weight during that period when your body is stressed by the new diet&exercise program, you gotta be more careful and make sure not to gain weight back again, especially the first 2 years.

Cheers !

Marc ;-)

Mid-month followup

Post by sporkfancier » Sat Sep 19, 2009 11:16 pm

Hey everybody:

I thought I'd make a kind of catch-all post that let's us see how we're all doing in one place, and to encourage those of us who haven't updated in a while to do so! I did this alphabetically to make it easier to find ourselves and our compatriots!

~emilyr: Let us know how your good habits are going. Is September still glorious green?

~reneew: only one red day so far! Keep on rockin'

ARI: Let us know how you're doing! You have a tonne of goals this month--let us congratulate you on those you've hit!

bizzybee: loved to see you overcome that rough first week and kick ass the second week. How's the third week gone?

blue: How's the No-S going? How about the 10,000 steps on N-days? Isn't that how many steps the former U.S. Secretary of Defense walked a day?

bluebunny27: only one red day on Nutrition this month, and perfect so far on your training. Plus, you're down a few pounds, too. Keep it up!

BuckeyePink: You're smoking like Don Draper! Keep up the great/green work!

burnnotice: How's your evening snacking going? BTW, I love your show! (Dear Die Hard. You rock! Especially when that guy was on the roof. P.S: Do you know Mad Max?)

buttercreampillow: I can't make Urban Ranger happen every N-day--you took on an ambitious goal. Looks like you started rocking it the second week. How's it been since?

clarinetgal: Congrats on maintaining your new low for weight! Like Reinhard says, maintenance is progress! Keep up the good habits!

gratefuldeb67: Deb, when I look at your habitcal, mostly I see green! Keep going! You're such a great encouragement to us!

guadopt1997: Looks like you're rocking your N-days like a rebound fling! Congratulations! Keep striving for moderation on those S-days :)

KCCC: How's the elimination of bites, licks, and tastes coming? I've noticed this has become easier as I've started to "let" my partner do all the cooking :o

Kodama: only a pound and a half away. Keep those N-days green and you'll get there! You're already doing way better than August :)

kwonset: We need an update! Looks like you've been hitting your exercise goal of 5x a week so far, but what about this past week? Let us know so we can congratulate or motivate you!

masher: Hey, let us know how it is going! Plain vanilla compliance sounds good--how's it gone?

mimi: You are kicking ASS! Congratulations! How'd the rest of the week go?

Nichole: Block parties are cool, even if they make us see RED. Looks like you're doing awesome this month--keep up the maintenance!

pumpkinseed: how's the exercise every day coming? Let us know so we can all be inspired!

randallkharris: Let us know how you're doing with No-S! We're all pulling for you, even if I have no idea where South Mississippi is!

reinhard: How've you done on the glass ceiling? My problem is not drinking enough!

sporkfancier: No red days! You rock. And you're handsome as all hell!

StrawberryRoan: under 140 every day so far! That's terrific--just close out the month!

TexArk: It's been a few days since your last update. You've been rocking up until day 15--just shake the dust off and keep going!

Thalia: How've the last two weeks gone? Still green like your money?

walkerlori: only one dessert per s-day eaten with meals. Only two red days--but all I see is green (not to mention some nice weight loss). Your two reds came after a weigh in... Maybe wait until the 30th for the next one? How's the last week gone?

wintry: How's the 100% compliance goal? Even if you can't hit 100%, shoot for 97%!

Everyone: Keep it up! September's when everyone "gets back in a groove"--let's all make our grooves positive!
Shovel glove? Isn't that the size of prophylactic I use?

Wow how thoughtful of you to make such a nice "all inclusive" post Sporkfancier!
Thanks for your kind words!
I am quite pleased that I've had a good month so far! Last month was quite a bit redder, so it's very good, and exciting that somehow I managed to turn it around!

Hope you are enjoying your weekend and doing well!!

Sporkfancier, Thanks!

Well, even though my weight loss is slow, I think my clothes are starting to fit more loosely on me. I noticed some of my shorts are getting loose, and when I tried on my concert dress tonight for my choir concert, it was a little loose in the bust area.
Woo hoo!

Thanks for caring Sporkfancier. :) I'm still having a terrific September :D :D I try to make better food choices and I'm feeling great ~ I love no s, I don't feel so bad about my weight and I have more control over what "could have been" binges!! I know I can have another treat, so it doesn't become such desperation to finish the whole bag of candy, cuz I'll never eat it again, HA :!: I haven't kept very good track of my weight loss, but the scale continues to go down, I think I've lost 15 pounds since I started :D :D I have made very small future goals for myself, because habits take time and that is my focus :!: I want this to last for my lifetime....

sporkfancier,

Thanks for the executive summary!

I've actually had a "glass ceiling" slip up. Just a minor one (one drink over the limit), but still. Of all my systems, this is the one I find I have to be most vigilant about.

Well, look at it this way--in 2007, your biggest problem was weekend luddite. Perhaps you've improved there, and that's why glass ceiling is the new system that requires vigilance? :)

Like I said in my "summary", I'm considering making a 1-2 drink minimum one of my monthly resolutions. I just don't have the cultural/familial framework for healthy, moderate drinking and am therefore not getting the health and gastronomic benefits!

thanks a lot, sporkfancier !

moral support is always appreciated, you rock n' roll.

I'm working hard on THE LAST 5 POUNDS ... the last 5 pounds is the toughest, right ?? Just checkin' ! ;-)

I have 37 days to do this though so I am confident. 1 pound per week until nov. 1st and I'm done with my year long journey.

Side note :

One lil' trick I just learned is that a late night coffee helps to curb hunger for a lot of people - - including me ... since I usually have problems in the late evenings (when I have red days the cravings usually begin at that time) I have been having a late night coffee on a regular basis these past few days and it seems to make it easier to handle the hunger/cravings since I started this trend ...

I use DECAF coffee at that time of course... I have 3 regular coffee cups during the day and one decaf in the late evenings 10pm-ish so it doesn't make it harder to fall asleep.

Cheers !

Marc ;-)

I am still going strong, one red day this week, but 4 green ones with no muddying of the water and better choices when eating out, I don't have any real cravings for this weekend, maybe a good beer out on the deck in the cool evenings.

I had to run to the DR on Thursday to X ray my ankle after 6 weeks of pain and swelling. Excitingly, I am down 6 pounds since mid-August.

I lost about a pound this month, which is fine :) since I'm just trying to maintain.

I've been thinking a lot about how to maintain without being obsessive. Any suggestions out there? I asked in my personal check in but I don't think many people have been venturing in there.

Nichole, I'm kind of in that place myself right now. I'm at the point where I wouldn't mind losing a few more pounds, but I'd also be happy maintaining the weight I'm at. One thing I've noticed for me is my body seems to be really good at staying at a set weight. For now, that seems to be 128-129. As long as I eat well most of the time (three meals kept to one plate), I can allow myself a few treats a week and still maintain at 128-129. I've noticed, too, that if I have a really bad day, I need to eat well for the next 2-3 days and then my weight is back to 128-129.
Anyway, those are just my observations. Like I said, I've just started this journey myself, so I'm learning right along with you. :D

Not that I have any experience in maintaining a healthy weight (though I hope to soon), but wouldn't simply following vanilla No-S be enough? Or are you finding it to be obsessive?

Spork, thanks for the encouragement! Actually, I've been having a kind of sorry month, which is why I stopped posting on this thread. I really did bite off more than I could chew, but I had done so well in August that I mistakenly thought I could keep it up forever. I guess I was just having beginner's success. Now that real life has kicked in, I'm struggling more.

Hope you're having a good weekend!

Hmmm, good suggestions. I will have to think about this! :) I figure it's going to take some trial and error to see how much I can eat.

Today, I weighed in at 194.2. According to the BMI charts, this places me, finally, at a 'Normal Weight'!

No longer obese, no longer overweight, I'm Normal. Which means, according to most of my friends here in America, that I'm 'skinny'.

Yup, here in America, overweight is the new normal, normal is skinny, and skinny becomes 'OMG!' Being the contrarian that I am, I'm happy to be 'Normal' in America, that is to say 'skinny' compared to the overweight norm.

In a sense, I feel done now, but I will push on a few more pounds to hit 190, then transition to a maintenance phase.

I just read your post Marc and you are right about coffee! I had some decaf after dinner last night with a little skim milk and pretended it was dessert lol. It def helped.

I have recently found that many of my favorite teas with a little milk has the same effect. It cuts the hunger for awhile, usually till the next mealtime.

For some reason, it has to have the milk though. My wife thinks it's because that little bit of milk 'coats the stomach'. I don't know, but it works for me!

Herbal (no caffeine) teas near bedtime, of course.

Kodama, Good for you!! I'm finding I like tea with a little rice milk and a small drizzle of honey in it in the afternoon between lunch and dinner. It definitely helps cut the hunger. A friend of mine gave me some Good Earth decaf chai tai and vanilla spice chai tea, and they're SO good!

I can't believe it, but I have lost 2 more lbs this month, making my grand total 18 lbs. I was 150 in May and now I am 132. :) I am really enjoying learning how to cook from scratch. It has been a gradual and (mostly) fun journey!

Well I weighed in this morning, and this month I lost 6 lbs!!!
Also, at the beginning of the month I started doing 14 mins per day of dumb bells, jogging in place, jumping around and squats.. I've done it fairly regularly (minus last week which was totally off!!!) and I went from only being able to do 20 to 30 squats at the beginning of the month, to now being able to do 4 sets of 20!!! :D
Good luck to all for October!
I'll be lurking about...

Doing alright. I had 4 red nutrition days in sept. I would have liked 3 or less so I didn't achieve that but it was close ... I ended the month strong at least with a few good days in a row.

I'm working on getting to the low 192's right now
I started the month at 195.4 so that's a loss of
approx. 3 pounds in september. A bit on the low side for me, I would have liked one pound more this month but it'll give me a bigger challenge for the final month, heh.

I should lose another 3 pounds in october, the final month in my year long journey and then hopefully I'll be done.

Nov. 1st 2008 = 280 pounds
Nov. 1st 2009 = 189 pounds (Objective)

91 pounds within a year ??? Sounds pretty good.
My original plan on the 1st day was 90 pounds
within a year. ;-)

Image

Congrats to everyone who worked hard this month !

Cheers !

Marc ;-)

The "BLTs" (or Snitches) have definitely gotten better. I had some reds, but they all clustered at the beginning of the month, when I'd "catch myself" after the fact. Now I catch myself in advance, but I can tell the impulse is still there. So, I still need to pay attention to them because I can tell the habit isn't firmly in place yet.

However, I consider this MAJOR improvement. And the initial strictness really paid off in the long run - it's much easier now.

I did more exercise than I usually do; but I sometimes exercised for just a few minutes, not 14. I need to have more variety in what I do. Lots of wood stacking to do this month; that will help.

May choose a different habit to work on for October. De-cluttering, maybe--or painting daily.

Oh no! Are you okay? I certainly hope so, Steven! Bikes can be fixed fairly easily...people - not so simple!

I feel pretty good about my September, in general. I stuck with NoS in spite of my personal trauma...that, in itself, is a major accomplishment for me. In the past I would have crawled off, *eaten* my emotions, and then given up on any self-improvement programs I was working on - be it a diet or an exercise program. This leads me to think that my commitment to NoS this time is authentic - I really am in it for the rest of my life.
I tried to weigh this morning by positioning the walker over my scale, then hopping on, standing on one leg. Well...it didn't work on any of the three tries. I got an error message each time. So I guess I won't know how much I weigh until the cast comes off...maybe in four weeks...maybe not - we'll see! It could be a blessing in disguise!
