Question for those who eat more than 3 meals

I just found out I'm pregnant (I'm 5 weeks as of today), and I'm already noticing that my stomach seems to do better with smaller meals. For people who eat more than 3 meals, how many meals do you eat? What size plates do you put them on? Do you try to have a mix of protein, fat, etc... at each meal?

Congratulations!!!!! :)

I wasn't doing No-S when I had my son (not sure it even existed then), and don't think I could have followed it - I had to eat frequently to avoid nausea. And once I realized I needed food, I needed it THEN. (There were emergency granola bars and PB crackers stuffed in my desk, in my car glove box, my purse, etc.)

But I was so focused on nutrition-for-the-baby that I wasn't at all an idiot either. I leaned heavily toward protein, and ate almost no sugar. (My big "pregnancy craving" was this awesome veggie sandwich that a local deli made... )

While you're pregnant, do what you need to. Just don't use the baby as an excuse to be an idiot. :)

Hope you have a wonderful pregnancy and get to slow down enough to marvel at it.

Congratulations!

I had my kids before there was all this dietary advice. I didn't concentrate on one thing or another or eliminate anything (including liquor -- though I'm not much of a drinker anyway). Both times it was one of the only times I wanted beer! I think I ate everything they now say to avoid or limit!

But more to your question, I found my needs and what worked varied throughout the pregnancy. Early on I was nauseated most of the time. It wasn't morning sickness, it was all day sickness. Smaller, lighter meals were the most appealing. In the middle I was on the see food diet. If I saw it, I ate it. Towards the end I was back to lighter meals, largely because I just couldn't hold as much food.

Pregnant or not, I've never tried to get a certain amount or combination of protein, carbs or fat at meals. I think we place too much emphasis on this, in most cases.

My advice is going to be to figure out what works best for you. In all likelihood, it will change quickly. What works now may not be the best thing in another 5 weeks.

Thank you, KCC and Wosnes! At this point, since it's still early, I'm not having a lot of nausea yet, but I'm finding I can't eat nearly as much before my stomach feels full, which is why I was wondering about smaller meals. The only other thing I know at this point is my body seems to be wanting lots of protein, so I'm trying to have protein with every meal.
