No S Facebook Group (vs. Page)

Post by reinhard » Thu Feb 06, 2014 2:48 pm

Attention facebookers: In addition to the No S Fan page, there's also a facebook group.

The group:

https://www.facebook.com/groups/nosdiet/

The page:

https://www.facebook.com/nosdiet

(The distinction is a "group" is more like a democratic bulletin board, a "page" more like a top-down blog. Took me a while to grasp this!)

Thought I should mention it since the FB group is starting to get some traction despite its being extremely well hidden.

Interesting that people wouldn't just come here. But I'll check it out.

Discussion fora are old school. The trend in social media is to access as much content as possible through as few platforms as possible. So aggregator services like Facebook or Google Plus are the preferred option since you don't have to "leave" the service to participate.

I think, too, the younger generation does not really get the whole anonymous persona. And a lot of their social media experiences are based around people they know offline. The idea of posting things on a bulletin board to be read primarily by people you don't know and have no way of knowing who they are is, as far as I've observed, not part of what they are looking for. But since I'm not a younger person, this is just my very limited observation.

I hope this forum doesn't go away, because I love it. And I don't love Facebook.......

Despite the fact that I love No S, at this point, I don't want all my Facebook friends witnessing my participation.

Yep -- I maintain a facebook page for my job and several groups, as marketing tools. I have let my personal account fall into disuse, but it is the prerequisite for the business and group accounts. No S would be none of my professional colleagues' business, but that's who would see it!

This forum is very helpful and I feel comfortable posting things here I would never post on FB--either too personal, too detailed, etc.

Hi Everyone,
Yeah, I want nothing to do with FB. I agree it probably appeals to young people who don't mind all their RL friends knowing all their business. That so does not apply to me!

For the record, I'm not super crazy about FB myself but some people are really into it apparently. :-)

And don't worry, this forum isn't going anywhere -- in fact, almost every single FB post I've made has been a link to a discussion here.

I'm pretty capable of being lazy right here on Everyday Systems...

I noticed this is an open group on Facebook. Open groups can be seen by friends. If you want to protect people's privacy a bit more it can be changed to a closed group. Only open groups show up on people's profile. If it is a closed group then only other group members can see if you are in the group and what is posted in the groups Facebook page.

Alternatively, individual users can opt to not have what groups they are in show up on their profile pages. Just select "manage sections" and un-select groups.

Hmmmm. I changed it to an "open group" because I thought that meant anyone could join without me having to approve (doesn't seem to be the case!). I didn't realize there was this visibility distinction. Wonder if I should set it back to closed...

Darn facebook, so creepy and confusing!

I seem to be in the minority, but I like both this site and also Facebook. I'm interested in reading what people have to say no matter where they prefer to post it!
