Handles -- how long?

Take a sledgehammer and wrap an old sweater around it. This is your "shovelglove." Every week day morning, set a timer for 14 minutes. Use the shovelglove to perform shoveling, butter churning, and wood chopping motions until the timer goes off. Stop. Rest on weekends and holidays. Baffled? Intrigued? Charmed? Discuss here.

Handles -- how long?

Post by equwal » Tue Aug 30, 2022 3:36 am

I got a sledgehammer with an extremely long handle, about 1.2 meters. Probably this is too long.

Short handles:
- More like a clubbell/indian club/chishi
- Can do clubbell moves

Long handles:
- Can do the "reaping the fields" scythe movement
- awkward extra length can hit you in the face
- because of leverage it is kind of like having sledgehammers of different weights. When you hold the handle in the middle with one hand, and the light end with the other, your hands are adding extra tork to hold up the head. In this way, you get more bang for you buck with a long handle.
- you can tweak your wrist because you are holding it in the wrong place. More skill required.

P.S.
First post, greetings!

Sorry for the delayed response! Welcome!

That does sound rather long!

I guess if you have high enough ceilings, you can do something with it, though.

I like your list of pros... though I might suggest for practicality investigating getting a shorter handle.

Good luck! Let us know how it goes.
