14 minutes?

Take a sledgehammer and wrap an old sweater around it. This is your "shovelglove." Every week day morning, set a timer for 14 minutes. Use the shovelglove to perform shoveling, butter churning, and wood chopping motions until the timer goes off. Stop. Rest on weekends and holidays. Baffled? Intrigued? Charmed? Discuss here.

14 minutes?

Post by tonez323 » Wed May 16, 2007 6:32 pm

Do you do all exercises in order without stopping and then start over without stopping and go til 14 minutes is up?

Pretty much. There are days when you feel crummy when you stop in between. And, when you're starting, you might have a hard tie not resting for 15 seconds between exercises.

There are a lot of motions to do if you look at them all. You might have more trouble getting them done in 14 minutes than you think.

I just started so I'm sticking with the first four exercises for awhile...

Yeah, 14 minutes every N-day, no breaks, that's the important thing.

Which movements, the order, how many reps per set, and whether you repeat movements are all details you can vary.

Do be careful to go slow starting out. You have plenty of time to get stronger. If you get impatient and rush you're gambling with that otherwise assured future strength because of the risk of injury.

Sorry, bulletin board shorthand.

N-day = "Non-S day" (basically, weekdays)

S-day = "days that start with S" -- Saturday, Sunday, and "S"pecial days (holidays)

I should probably cover these abbreviations more thoroughly on the home pages (explanations are hiding there, at least on nosdiet.com, but not where you'd expect them).

I don't do breaks, i have found that starting again after a break makes things harder.
I've even decided to switch off my cellphone to make sure i don't get interrupted while exercising.

High intensity, low duration. I just go from move to move, and have one move I call Beat the Drum that I add to the end that i do until time-out. It's in the movenents thread in my Topic. Hugely tiring, but fun.

That is a good idea. I started making a habit of it after I got a call while I was shovelgloving...

Me, out of breath: "Hello?"
Other person: "Are you all right?"
Me: "Yeah, I'm fine, I'm just exercising."
Other person: "Are you sure?"

You really can go without talking on the phone for 14 minutes. Otherwise, you're going to screw up your routine and sound like a doofus.

I try not to stop at all, and to facilitate that I do the movements in an order that rotates the muscles principally being taxed. Sometimes toward the end I'll do squats for variety or if my arms are really tired.

It strikes me that, since you know exactly how long you're gonna be working out, there could be a follow-along workout video!

Reinhard, it's about time to get that celebrity fitness video done.
