Starting Shovelglove with a small mod

Take a sledgehammer and wrap an old sweater around it. This is your "shovelglove." Every week day morning, set a timer for 14 minutes. Use the shovelglove to perform shoveling, butter churning, and wood chopping motions until the timer goes off. Stop. Rest on weekends and holidays. Baffled? Intrigued? Charmed? Discuss here.

Starting Shovelglove with a small mod

Post by wrigleyj » Mon Jan 19, 2009 9:33 pm

Hi,

I just started Shovelglove this week. I did my first proper session today, after doing it on Saturday as a trial run.

Today, my routine consisted of:

Shoveling 3 x 21 reps
Churning butter 3x21 reps
Curl Swings 2x7 reps
Drive Fence Post 2x14 reps
Hoist Sack 2x14 reps
Tuck Bales 2x14 reps
Chop Tree 2x14 reps

I didn't have an old sweater to use, and I wanted it to be a bit neater, so I cut up an old towel into strips (after using first an old Fitness First towel, the joyous irony) and tied them tightly around the head and then finished off with a Union Flag (the British kind) to make it look tidier.

I've posted a few pics:

After adding some strips of another old towel:

Bound up (untidily) with string:

The final product. Very patriotic! ;-)

I don't like the varnish on the handle, so I'm planning to give it a good rub down and oil it with Danish oil.

Loving the burn of these exercises.

Now the wife wants to join in :-)

After a little ridicule, my wife has decided she wants to join in. My 10lb hammer is way too heavy for her, but I think I have a lump hammer that probably weighs 2 or 3 lbs but only has a short handle. Has anybody ever lengthened a handle in some way? Perhaps a length of pipe or something?

Nice!

That is one meticulously gloved sledgehammer!

Love the union jack (just read lengthy wikkipedia article as to whether to call it "jack" or "flag" and decided the issue was sufficiently confusing to stick with what slipped off my keyboard).

I was wondering if anybody would pick up on that :-)

I guess you could say that it's being flown from something the size of a ship ;-)

Jack. Flag. Whatever.

That's awesome, I ought to find a Welsh flag to wrap around mine.

I love how quickly your wife went from ridicule to 'I want some of that'! My husband still watches me with amusement if he's around, though he does keep saying 'I must try it some time'. I suspect my 10lb hammer would be a bit light for him but you never know.

Fitness First 'evil gym chain'! One of my colleagues, who goes there, would agree (he's forever complaining about the state of the changing rooms). Never darkened their doors meself, thankfully.
It's vital to know exactly how ridiculous you are.

I was more referring to their evil credit/contractual practises. Just google "fitness first credit" and you'll find pages of complaints or people trying to leave them.

Now my only contract is with myself and HabitCal :-)
