Okay, so hiking the AT isn't urban rangering per se, but I felt it somewhat related. Hiking the AT has always been a popular topic here in York County since the first person to thru-hike it was a local folk hero, Earl Shaffer. He did it for something to do after WWII, and twice more the last time at 79. Among AT hikers, he's held in high esteem. While I didn't know Mr. Shaffer personally, it's believed he may have suffered PTSD and hiking the trail was his way to get the war out of his system. At his death he was still living in cabin on some family land without electricity. His diet while hiking the trail consisted mostly of hard boiled eggs, which he'd do on a camp fire on the trail.
I have only hiked a few miles of the trail, where it traveled through my home county.
