Bahhhh glass ceiling

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

What's your ceiling? I greatly enjoy an evening glass of wine, or two, with my husband and I've been struggling with a goal of 0 glasses during the work week (makes it a lot easier to wake up in the morning) and 1 on each of my s- days. I'm currently at about a 50% compliance rate. I must say, I definitely can feel the difference so I'm encouraged to keep at it.

good luck tomorrow

Oh Gingerpie I wish I were as diligent as you! I'm a beer girl...and only good beer at that! LOL I am struggling keeping it at two. I want to keep it always at two. I know it's a midlife/empty nest/ boredom/and avoidance issue. The holidays aren't helping as they have been absolutely fun and busy which leads to over indulgance too. However I am able to comply to everything else ...I go outside everyday (I live in Maine...I am on porch having coffee right now! ) I exercise everyday, internet 9-4 rule, And No S. Except I joined it with the glass ceiling rule so then they are both not in compliance....bahhhh humbug. Anyways today is the day...thanks for "goodluck" ! I just want to be a person of moderation in every way.

I am also a beer girl, and there was a time when one or two good craft beers were enough. After retirement, that slipped upwards with so much free time to socialize. Just like everything else, we all have our own level of moderation. Mine is one or two and trying to keep it at no more than one per hour if I do go over two.
The journey is the reward.
Maintenance is progress.

Thank You Gingerpie! I have failed everyday except Friday BUT my fails have been one beer over and all holiday related so I am not upset about it at all. I have wonderful company here through the weekend and then I am hunkering down and getting serious about this situation.

How are you ? Are you enjoying the holidays?

I'm happy to report a 6 day streak of green with the glass ceiling but, sadly, not with no-s. like you I'm still happy with my efforts because my fails are so much more modest than they would have been a year ago at this time.

I've never been so proud of failing

My holiday was wonderful. The lead-up was quite stressful because my Mother had to be moved from assisted living to nursing care. But my husband planned a 4 day trip to Washington DC which (so far) has gone without a hitch.

Good luck with your upcoming week's efforts!

HAPPY 2015 !

Well I have decided to change my beer habits and put beer with sweets and such...so that I can succeed! So I guess the title of this thread still pertains LOL ! Ohhhhh beer....see you on S days !

I am pretty excited about this year. I have have gotten some good habits down these last few months and this is the first holiday season I didn't gain even more.

Have a great day !

So, this is how my mind plays tricks on me. I absolutely could not remember what my glass ceiling was set at and I was debating with myself about whether or not I could have another glass of wine. It turns out the only place I actually wrote it down was this thread so I had to come search for it to find out my own goals. I'm sure you will not be surprised to hear that the answer was"no".

Maybe I'd better write my goals somewhere else as well as here 8)

I waffle and waffle....why do we fight internally with what we know is the right thing to do? I know I want moderation in my life and yet I keep trying to put things in such a way that I am setting myself up to go overboard...the Beer just on S days for instance. Sometimes I think I set myself up to fail on purpose just so I won't have success....because if you have that then what...LOL...

I think this
success....because if you have that then what...LOL...
is a very good question. What does success mean? What does it look like. What will my life or even part of a day look like if I am successful? Or, what will it look like if I'm not? Will I even recognize it if I see it? I do think these questions are very important to answer in order to start to get a grip on the waffles. I also don't think they can be answered in one go at it. I suspect my answers will change as my experience with success and/or lack thereof changes.

On a more practical note: I find it very helpful not to have temptation in the house. I've started going out Friday after work to buy what I want to have as S-treats so they will not be available during the week. An alternative is to put them in some totally weird place that makes it obvious that I'm choosing to have it and it can't happen due to thoughtlessness.

Good luck this week.

Just stopped by to say hey,

How is it going? You asked a few days ago (on my thread) if I lost weight when I was successful with glass ceiling. I can now say yes! ! Keep at it!!
I was successful with glass ceiling all this week and the scale is moving. Plus, I just feel better in the mornings.

Take care,

You are so funny...you make me smile!

Okay on task now...i had success last night...3 but it's one of over my 2...today I am going to have my 2 and my goal for my life is to have 0-2 ... Isn't that the point of all of this? Moderation and exercise and ENJOYING life is what everything is really supposed to be about. I can tell you right now life is SHORT so I am going to stop agonizing over " is this going to work " and I am going to just practice the daily art of moderation as the background "noise" of my life and get on with things!

( is this my manifesto? ) LOL

Just as areminder.. What you are trying to do is really hard so be sure to pat yourself on the back for even the little victories.

Why is fat Tuesday an s-day for you? That's a real question. I'm not religious and I'm wondering.

This is what I know:
1) fat Tuesday comes before ash Wednesday which is the beginning of lent.
2) people have a big old eat-fest before lent.
3) The part I'm missing . . . why?

Anyway, enjoy!!

Oh I was raised catholic however I am not religious at all. I have always loved the idea of lent. Whether you give something up or you add something, like doing a good deed or saying something nice every day. I feel there is a bit of power and a union during this time because other people are doing this too. I like to believe we are all connected so I figure when there is something we are being part of that is mostly a positive energy then I am in! The "eatfest " is because you are giving up whatever for 40 days which is really 46... there is a weird loop hole about Sundays. Oh on that note I never eat donuts but on Fat Tuesday we try to find the most ridiculous donut we can find...and we did! 😳

Donuts!!?? Man! I hope it was good  I'd look like this  if I tried to eat a donut. Did it have both filling and icing?

Lets see, if I could eat anything I wanted as a once a year treat what would it be? I think it would be home made roast chicken (dark meat with skin) with mashed potatoes and gravy and green beans the way my Mother used to make them. Wow! That all sounds good. . . Sigh. . . But what would my vegetarian children eat? *double sigh * life is so complicated when we have to think of others.

Booo another FAIL but it wasn't epic so I am okay with it. I should just go to bed earlier.

Hey Ipearlmom that is great that you are excited to support your daughter in meatless Mondays! Some people get very defensive when people even suggest eating less meat . My son's friend became vegetarian three years ago, he is 27, and his parents were very supportive so at Thanksgiving all he could eat was mashed potatoes and rolls ! My own mother will start telling me what she ate at a restaurant and when it involves meat she'll say " oh you don't eat meat so you probably don't want to hear this", hilarious. I am making Spaghetti Sqaush casserole tonight and grilling some sausages to add for my husband who is a carnivore...the casserole is D E L I C I O U S !

Glad it wasn't an epic fail at least! That's a great word by the way (epic). DH & his rock climbing friends used to say it all the time when we were in college.
"That was epic dude!" 😀

Anyway, I don't understand not supporting someone who wants to eat a certain way but I was a vegetarian for 5 years so I guess that helps. My youngest is 9 and loves animals so wants to eat less meat. My other daughter is 11 and has a crush on a vegetarian boy so I think she's open to the idea. I would only miss hamburgers, sushi & oysters. DH is a hopeless case however.

The casserole sounds divine. I belong to a CSA so I get a bag of organic veggies every week. A couple weeks ago we received spagetthi squash. I didn't know what to do with it so just added it to beef stew but would love your recipe sometime for something different. Have a great weekend!

Okay so cut the squash in half, scoop out seeds, cut side down on baking sheet and cook for about 30 minutes at 350*, let cool and scoop out with a fork. You will see how to do it so as to get the spaghetti look. I put mine in a bowl with a towel to absorb the liquid...sometimes they are a bit moist.

1 jar of marinara or any sauce you like
4 oz. cream cheese
1/4 freshly grated parmesan cheese

Heat the sauce until cheeses have melted then add what ever you want...I add diced onion, cooked broccoli, black olives sometimes some spinach...you get the picture

Poor this over your squash and mix well...put in a casserole dish...sprinkle some shredded cheese on top and bake uncovered at 350* until the top gets a bit golden and the whole thing is bubbling

It is wonderful...oh and I have done it without adding cheese to the sauce and that is good too!

Hey Lovedby2 I hope you like it! I just made it again last night and I was thinking about maybe trying to make mac'n cheese...it would just be a cheese sauce instead of tomato based and I think I would stick with the broccoli and diced onions and maybe some pimentos. I am going try it next time I get a squash.

Monday was a SUCCESS...

On your way to 21. Good luck today. Are you still being nicer to your husband? I'm trying to be nicer to mine as well. I'm thinking of buying him a tiny surprise gift but I can't come up with any good ideas.

Good job w your husband! I have a lot of guilt about how much I've neglected my Dh since having kids. This week the focus is definitely back on him and the girls are learning to take on a little bit more for themselves. It's nice that we're reconnecting but wish it didn't take him getting sick for it to happen.

So good for you for recognizing what's important.

You are my hero and my inspiration. 4 days easy as pie!!

So, still haven't come up with a great gift idea but I'm going shopping with my weight loss winnings today and I'm not coming home without something nice for my husband. Unfortunately, his favorite surprises usually include hunks of meat and chocolate. Both of which he had at dinner last night.

Have a great (but not over indulgent) s-day.

Thanks Ipearlmom ( btw do you knit...I do ) I had a great weekend until 6 pm last night when my lovely cat Dewey had some sort of seizure...on a Sunday closest emergency vet is 1 hour away and this cat almost needs to be tranquillized to go to our vet 15 minutes away...so if he has had a heart attack or stroke it may have made it worse. Waiting for the vet now. He's being sweet but he absolutely not himself and his balance is still off...damn it.

Well he will be either alright or not...this is life and he's had the best life here...everyone LOVES him even though he drools, is allergic to fleas and bug bites and has IBS. This is my mantra for today.

I had very good S days not crazy at all...no alcohol either...actually this is day 8 no alcohol..I don't know why I just want a break and see where it takes me.

Monday day 8 ...
SUCCESS

Poor Dewey...he is feeling better it's now just a watch and wait to see if it happens again. He's taking that news better then me, I like to solve things immediately, blehhhhh.

Side note...my back is out of sorts and I was like...if I am supposed to be sleeping better ( which I am ) why the heck is my back bothering me. My theory is that I am not moving around as much maybe? BTW I feel loads better about everything and the sun is OUT LIKE IT MEANS IT here in Maine!

You guys have a great Tuesday !

Glad your kitty is doing better.

Are you sure your hurting back isn't related to endless snow shoveling? Personally, I swear by stretching both before bed and when I get up.

Hope it clears up soon.

Glad your kitty is better & hope she stays better! Sorry about your back. Mine started hurting upon waking about a year ago. I ordered massage balls from Amazon and they've helped tremendously. That along with strengthening exercises.

OMG really I was going to get those. I've also been looking at those tubes that you roll along on ( there is no better way to describe that )! Yeah, after I said that about the back I remembered that I had gone out in snowshoes to traverse the snow piles around my house to get the snow off the roof...so quick to blame the sleeping well... LOL. So yes Gingerpie, you are right. I am going to do the stretching as well as add strengthening because really that is why my back bothered me. It really is helpful you little voices THANK YOU!

Oh and day 9 SUCCESS ! I am so doing the 21 day thing and I am so going to write in the 21 day challenge post when it happens ðŸ˜

Yeah--you guys are doing great! I swear I had to white knuckle my way through the first 21 days and then it did seem to get a lot easier after that. Not sure if it was pyschological or not but it really does start get a lot easier after you can get a string of green days under your belt.

" I am honored to know you" OMG I just started giggling...you my dear are too funny!

I made it yesterday...day 18... And today is Friday and OMG...DUDE...I just need today...we are supposed to go out to movies and such because this weekend is going to be gross out but now I am getting nervous too so I might still try and go tomorrow..need to check the weather... I have a personal rule about the deadly movie theater popcorn...I eat it...but I won't if I go today...but I want toooooo.

Side note...it's a big deal just to go to the movies...an hour away...did I mention I live in the sticks?! This is hilarious.

Awesome job yesterday! A lot of us find it a big deal to go to movies without popcorn. It has such a strong pleasant association for many. When I go to the movies on an N day instead of trying to white knuckle it, I make popcorn my lunch for the day. I just virtually plate popcorn and get a big diet coke and voila! I noticed a few other people on here who've done the same.

Either way though I know you can do this! Tomorrow you can have whatever you might be craving today!
