Jen's checkin thread

Hi, y'all. I am new to the No S Diet. I found it from googling habits. The description of the diet online felt right to me. I know that sugar is my downfall. I also just like to eat and cook, and I am the stereotypical mom eating food to save it. Plus I work a stressful job in a small non-profit, and we celebrate every birthday with cake! Even though I'm a runner, I've gained two pounds a year since college (25 years ago). I used to tell people that I was researching to write a how-to guide, "How to stay slightly fat despite exercise". For the first time, I had an elevated blood sugar at my yearly physical this year, and I decided to change some habits. Ouch. And my weight was edging up toward 190. Ouch again.

In August, I started a 2-mile per day running habit. Even though I am a runner, I've found that I haven't stuck to a regular running routine unless I'm training for a race. So I decided to do a tiny run every day, first thing, 6 days/week. Since then, I've run more than 60 miles. I like my runs, and I like that I get it done before work. Step one.

Past attempts at regulating my diet:
* When I've tried to cut back sugar, I have filled the food vaccuum with salty snacks.
* When I've tried food logs, I resent having to do all this work. My job involves fundraising and accounting and sweating the details, and I use up my energy there.
* When I've tried to cut back meals, I have made my family sad, or myself guilty.
* When I've tried to cut out types of food, I've ended up returning to my omnivore ways.

So, what I love so far about No S, from my vast experience of one week, is that it blends into my family life, requires no logs or counting, gives me a framework for handling sugar, and encourages me to not think about food between meals.

I will check in at the end of October with a weigh in. :)

Welcome, it sounds like No S will be perfect for you. I also have a stressful job and have to track my time to the tenth of an hour so I completely understand not wanting to do food accounting. Great job on the running! You are going to do great at No S.

Habit check in- Eating just the meals feels pretty natural. I know I need to do it for more weeks before it's automatic.

Hard times - afternoon to early evening, preparing dinner. I've been having a small cup (espresso shot sized) of kefir (basically plain yogurt) during those times if I am at home, or just tea if I'm out.

Biggest adjustment - no sweets on N days. I think this will be great for me, but it's a big change from my old ways.

My running habit is going strong. I am running 2 miles/day, first thing, 6 days a week. With that little start, I then usually get to 8,000-10,000 steps or more by the end of the day. I did 61 miles of running in September, most of it in those short increments.

I need to add in strength (SG?) and more flexibility work (I like yoga). I've been doing one yoga class on weekends. I'm toying with the idea of adding 14 minutes of yoga one day, 14 minutes of strength the next day, alternating. I don't think I can or should do strength every day.

I stayed green yesterday until after dinner. I stayed up too late watching a movie and broke into some dried mango as a snack. Still a better day than pre-no S. Dust myself off and do better.

Daily weigh-ins can freak you out. I was down a couple of pounds, to 182, a few days ago, and thus feeling very optimistic. Then today I weighed myself and was back at 184. I am going to concentrate on getting the habits solid, then worry about the next steps.

I am doing great on my 2-mile run habit. I tried out some shovel gloving this morning after my run. I felt it activating some back muscles that I don't use enough (lats?). I can only manage about 10 minutes at a relatively slow pace. I don't want to hurt myself.

Hi Jen! Thank you for commenting on my thread the other day. 😊 I appreciate your kind words. Don’t worry about the scale too much. Scales are crazy. 😂 I do weigh myself daily, but i know the weight fluctuates so much from day to day. That’s why i weigh daily instead of weekly. I may hit a new low one day, but i’m 100% positive that the next day i’ll weigh a couple more pounds. It will take a few days, maybe even a week, but then it will go down to an even lower weight the next week. So it will be high, high, low, high, high, low, high, high, high, new low. For example. If that makes sense. I am using an app for ios to track my weight and it’s really fantastic. It’s called Happy Scale. It takes into account these fluctuations and while it keeps a log of your daily weigh-ins, it always puts your lowest weight on top. By the way, i’ve tried dieting without a scale, and it doesn’t work for me. I wish it did, but i’m very motivated by daily weigh-ins to keep me “on planâ€- while still recognising that the scale fluctuates like crazy.

I can only manage about 10 minutes at a relatively slow pace.

Hi, I'm currently 55 yo and started running when I was 50. There is no way you are as slow as I am  I have two favorite running stories:
1) When my teen-age son had a stress fracture and wasn't allowed to run, he was able to hop-skip-walk next to me faster than I was going.
2) The dog used to "run" with me. Once, when we were going up a steep hill, he was able to come to a complete stop, sniff at and pee on a leaf before the length of the leash ran out. It doesn't matter, I still love the feeling I get from running.

Enjoy your day and welcome to our happy little group.

Thank you, Crystal and Gingerpie! The thing I am slow at is the Shovelglove, although I am also a slow runner, so your post is relevant. I am happy when I run a 10:30 pace. These days, that's fast for me. 8)

My friend texted me last night spontaneously at 8 PM to ask if we wanted to come over for apple-peach galette, fresh from the oven. It looked so good, and I love to socialize with them. But we hadn't even sat down to our dinner yet - we were just plating it then. And it would've made our night crazy (we had a couple things to do to get ready for school and work). So I said no but told them it looked amaze-balls. FOMO issues! So, I made it through the N Day by the skin of my teeth, lol. I did get the recipe to try this weekend.

I bought my kid a mixed berry pie yesterday at Petsi Pie, and I'm considering whether pie for breakfast is a sweet. I know the answer, lol. The good news for today is that Crystal is wise, and I have seen numbers fluctuate a lot this week on my scale. However, the random fluctuations made me happy today (181).

Wow, I love the little calendar that you're using to track your days! What a cool snapshot image of how things are going. :)

It looks like you're killin' NoS so far! I'm excited about how much success you're seeing overall on the scale. It's making me anxious to hop on and weigh myself... but, I told myself that I'd wait until the weekend! Eek!

Can't wait to follow more of your days. Hope your Wednesday is off to a fabulous start!

Still 181. Gave myself a fail yesterday because I did have a small slice of pie with breakfast, but that was my only slip of the day. I did not want to get out of my warm bed this morning for my run, but I did go, so I will pat myself on the back for that.

Holding steady at 181. Giving myself a green yesterday even though I tasted some ribs I took out of the oven at 9 pm. Literally just a bite (it was a new recipe). No run today, but instead I got up and did Shovel Glove and had a leisurely morning. Happy Friday, everyone.

Amazing isn't it? I still think about food a lot but I'm responsible for cooking for the family - and I am pretty picky about what I cook. All five of us run so we all have runners' appetites and we eat so many vegetable that people who come to visit are pretty surprised. Sometimes I wonder what I'd spend my time on if I didn't have to think about food so often. . . probably nothing intelligent

I still sometimes catch myself doing this even with tried and true recipes. A lifetime habit I guess.

Have a great weekend.

Hi Jen. Just wanted to say that i too can relate to feeling a bit embarrassed at how much food i used to eat. I think i was in denial about how much i was eating before No S. I was just thinking about this a day or so before you mentioned it. I was rarely that hungry for meals. I love being hungry for meals. I think it’s one of the best things about No S.

Have a lovely weekend!

Today 180. Yesterday was a red day - I ate popcorn at the movies. I went to see Victoria & Abdul with my daughter. It was a very simplistic look at the idea of empire, but a sweet movie about friendship across various lines. Good tween movie (although my kid was the only tween there).

Other than the popcorn, I ate on plan - 3 relatively healthy meals with some veggies and fruit.

I saw 179 on the scale this morning, but when I got on and off again, it was 180.5 again. Psych! Oh well, I expect to see it again soon.

I bought some fancy caramel, and we ate a bunch of it on apples this weekend. Today I did the eat all day thing - 3 meals, plus weird snacks. I am not worrying because it is Sunday after all.

179.5 again today.

Yesterday was an S Day (my birthday), but I didn't go crazy. I tried the snacks at Fabrica Central, a restaurant that hosted a meeting I attended for work. I would like to go there some night for dinner. I also had one slice of cake. I did stay up too late though with friends, so I skipped my run this morning. Back on habit today.

I am proud of myself that I've navigated several coffee meetings in the last 2 weeks where I normally would've ordered some food, but I stuck to coffee or tea. The funny thing is, I thought it would be awkward, but in fact, no one has noticed. It was just in my head that we needed to order food.

I did do my run after work. I did cheat a tiny bit tonight by eating dried mango with some kefir, but it was otherwise a day without S events.

(Edited to add that I polished off the container of dried mango, so... snacking is a slippery slope.)

I am feeling a bit gross after my weekend eating. Yesterday we met friends for dim sum brunch, and then didn't eat lunch, because we we still stuffed, but that meant that my late afternoon/early evening eating was weird. I was taking 6 Girl Scouts to a corn maze, and we ate cider donuts and then came home and snacked until late. Blergh.

Today, I ate in meals, and made a 1/2 batch of brownies for us. Not too bad. I ran one day this weekend.

181 this morning. I downloaded the Happy Scale app that someone recommended on here and entered the weights I've recorded here. It is reassuring to see the downward trend. Back on habit today.

For now I'm just trying to observe the weekend eating and not make a judgement on what to do about it.

The "mark it and move on" mentality is by far the best for handling these sorts of events. No point in beating yourself up after the fact.

Have a great day,

Mmmm...brownies. â¤ï¸â¤ï¸â¤ï¸

And I love the Happy Scale App! I’ve used it for a couple months now. It’s very useful for helping to avoid anxiety over day to day weight fluctuations. And fun to view the log and see how your weight is definitely moving in the right direction, even if it’s slow. If I am feeling like I’m losing too slowly, I’ll look back at what I weighed exactly one week before and it’s usually at least one pound less, even though it may have gone up a few days in between.

I think I lose maybe at the rate of half a pound a week when I'm minding my habits. So that's going to be hard to see except over the long haul. I remind myself about all the other good things I get from No-S-- weight loss is lovely, but not for me the main reason I do this.

I still have to figure out weekends too. I don't like going back to thinking about food all the time. Do I have this? Do I have that? I'm sure there's a way through but I haven't hit the sweet spot yet. I'll report in when I do :)

The cider donuts sound awesome!

Sick today. I stayed home this morning and slept until 1:00. I got up in the morning, put my kid on the school bus, and went back to bed.

I don't think I'll take a S day. I am able to eat. Skipped breakfast, but I did get up and eat a normal lunch. I'd made black bean chili for my kid's lunch, so I ate some of that for my lunch, too. I might get myself some chicken soup for dinner.

I am here at work now, just for a couple of hours. I had to get a couple of things done.

I am thinking about whether I should try to make my lunches later than I typically eat them. I usually eat lunch around 12 or 12:30, and we don't sit down to dinner until 7:00 or 7:30 most nights. I am not sure if that's even a problem. I get really hungry and distracted in the afternoon, but generally, some tea cures my issue. And when I get home, I sometimes have some buttermilk or kefir to drink because I feel that I can't make dinner without something to bolster me.

I think instead of changing my lunch time, I'm just going to keep observing this for now. I do like the fact that I sit down to dinner with an appetite. That is usually my best meal of the day.

178.5 again this morning. I did go to bed early (9:30), so that was a win. Still feeling raggedy today. Foodwise, I think I will give myself a green even though there was some stacking and not-ideal food choices. I had 3 vegetarian egg rolls yesterday at dinner. I got a 5 pack for my family of 3, but my boyfriend had to work late, and my kid turned up her nose at them.

I am starting to get pretty solid in my habit of just getting a small coffee when I am out. I have a fair number of meetings in coffee shops with donors, board members, etc. It's starting to feel really normal (and thrifty!) to just get the small coffee. I have indulged in a latte a couple of times when I felt hungry.

No run today. I have a race this weekend, a relay. My leg is 6 miles. Together my team will run a marathon. I'm not worried about the distance, but I just don't want to make myself sicker with not enough sleep, travel, etc. It's only on the Cape (2 hour drive), but we need to be there at 7:30AM on Sunday.

Hanging tough at 178.5#. I ran 6 miles yesterday in a relay race, and it was hilly, which made it tough for me. I was proud to finish strong. I was wiped out afterward.

My mom cooked me lunch - my race was near where my parents live - which was a nice treat. I told them a little about No S. They could tell I'd lost weight - I hadn't seen them in about a month.

180# this morning. The weekend included a lot of sugar, so I'm just putting my head down to go for green this week. I am taking a S day today for Halloween, but my goal is to just have a little bit of candy tonight, but to eat normally until then. We do Halloween big in my house. I am going as Jon Snow from Game of Thrones. (Yes, I am a girl, and I look like Jon Snow a bit, without the beard.)

178.5 this morning, and I did my morning run again. I'm looking forward to "sleeping in" to 7:30 tomorrow morning. I am so sleep deprived during the school year. I like that No S imposes some eating sanity on me even while sleep deprived. It's simple but not lax.

Green yesterday. No reason to not be green today.

179 this morning. I met my friend Minnie for a run around Fresh Pond. Beautiful day today but chilly.

I'm giving myself a fail yesterday, because I ate a Halloween k*t k*t. But other than that, no S events, so I'm still pretty happy. I ate 3 meals and just the one candy. I need to be ready for my Friday inner brat to come out - the little voice that says I had a bad week and deserve x, y, z.

180 this morning.

Weekend was a bit of a candy fest. My kid doesn't like chocolate, so all her chocolate Halloween candy goes to me. I found myself eating ones I don't even like (M*lky W*y etc.) Bleh! By the way, I don't like to spell out junk food brand names, because then I get advertisements for them.

I am done with Halloween candy as of today. No more.

I did catch up on sleep, so much so that I woke up at 5 am raring to go for my run (one hour early, due to daylight savings).

Today is my kid's birthday, and she wants pie instead of cake. So I will have a slice of pie tonight, but otherwise stick to the plan. I'm packing stew for lunch, as I think that the weeks I lost weight, I was eating a lot of soup.

179.5 this morning. Yesterday was a day for the letter of the law but not the spirit. I had a big mug of warm, whole milk before bed, which felt decadent, but removed my craving for food.

No run this morning, but I did shovelglove strength training. I wanted to read about election results, so a quick, 10-minute workout was perfect.

We had soba noodles last night, so I brought leftover kimchee noodles for lunch. And we just had a birthday celebration here at work, and I saved my brownie for later, but really I meant, later for my kid if she wants it.

179# this morning. Did my run despite 29 degrees and frost on the ground. Can you tell I feel heroic for that?

Yesterday was a green day. Yay me! My kid and her friend split the brownie and were very happy about it. I almost had a snack at 10 pm but stopped myself and went to bed instead.

Tomorrow I need to make cupcakes for the kid's birthday party with her friends. I will save one for me for Saturday.

I know that this is psycho, but I weighed myself a second time today, after my run, and it was 178, so that's what I put in the Happy Scale App.

I keep thinking it's Friday because we have no school tomorrow. I usually would be off of work, but I have an event tomorrow. The weather prediction is for VERY COLD wind. Wind chills in the teens - not sure about whether my run will happen. Boo.

177# this morning. Progress! No run again. I went out last night to meet with a group of women I really like, and despite fun snacks and sweets on the table, I stuck to my wine. And then I came home and had to work more, but I didn't snack. It's always nice (although rare) when weight loss follows green days so obediantly, like Mary's little lamb following her.

Did not weigh today. I went to Yoga Sculpt class today (1 hr, light weights) and ran on Friday and Saturday.

I kind of felt crappy today in yoga class. There are so many slim women there, and I was the chubby one. I was not able to do everything, but that's more a function of my occasional attendance and not my weight per se. It was all in my head, looking at all the mirrors and the reflection of myself and all of the slim people there. I guess I had been expecting my weight loss to date to look more awesome in the mirror. Oh well. I'm just recording it here because I don't want to attend that class if it's going to make me feel crappy, but I also think that I could reframe it in my mind. Other than my attitude, the class was good for me, and I do think the heated yoga is pretty appealing to me in the cold weather.

Hi jenji, good luck with the class. It sounds like fun -and warm 😊 just what's needed in the winter months. I know what you mean though. My daughter bought me a snazzy pair of winter running pants that show every bulge, ripple and jiggle. - I can't wear them. They just make me feel old. All in my mind yes - but there none the less.

Hope all goes well this week.

176.5# this morning. No run - feeling congested, and stayed up late working. I have a weird cold that has been waking me up to blow my nose a lot at 3 AM. Yuck.

I did a little virtual plating yesterday at dinner, because my kid wasn't home to eat with me until 8:00 pm. I think I kept it to one (full) plate, though, so I'm giving myself a green. I actually took a picture of the quesadilla I made for plate one to have a visual image of how much space to leave.

177# today. I intend to rack up a set of greens this week. I went back to my old standby of soup for lunch, this time curried red lentil soup that I made with lots of veggies and some chicken broth. It was delicious and good for the cold weather.

In case anyone wants a recipe for some inspiration:
* Saute onions in clarified butter with your favorite masala curry powder mix
* Add carrots and diced root veg (I used Shunkyo radish and celeriac)
* Add garlic
* When they start to brown, add chicken broth and 1/2 cup red lentils. Simmer 20 minutes.
* Add chopped greens, simmer another 5 minutes.
* Salt to taste.

Monday was a fail - after my bragging about an upcoming string of S days - because I was baking cookies for my kid's Girl Scout troop, and I ate two cookies without even considering not doing it. Doh. Yesterday was fun, now back to normal eating. Probably leftover silver noodles for lunch today. :)

175.5# today. Holding steady but not losing this month. I think I need another week of lots of soup. But I will have to save that idea until after the holidays. Maybe I'll make chili for dinner tonight - beans are good for me.

I haven't been doing my daily run in about a month, which is likely another reason for the stalled progress. I've been prioritizing sleep, and work. I wonder if I can develop an evening indoor workout habit for January (video)? That would be good for me in many ways. Maybe a 30 minute video tonight after my board meeting and after Hanukkah (last night). I'll set a reminder to myself now.

I do believe that this dark winter time of year is meant for waiting, story telling, socializing, and expectation, not for actual progress. The solstice will be on Thursday, and as the days begin getting longer again, I will visualize that each day, I am opening up a bit more and letting go of negative baggage.

175# today. And no, I did not do that workout last night. I was exhausted. Still trying to figure that out.
