The Journey of Tobias and Mom

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

The Journey of Tobias and Mom

Post by tobiasmom » Fri Nov 08, 2019 4:40 pm

Hey, all. It’s Tobiasmom. I’ve been on these boards off and on for years. I’m the ultimate yo-yo, always chasing the crazy diets that I just never ever stick with. My son, Tobias, is almost 12, and we just found out yesterday that he needs to lose about 35-40 pounds. I decided that No-S is the most sane, normal way to slow permanent weight loss. So mom and son are in this thing together now. I fear I have messed up my kid with all my crazy dieting so I just want to support him and teach us both a normal healthy relationship with food!

We weighed in today for a start.
Tobias: 127.2 (57 inches tall)
Mom: 232.2 (5’2)

Onward!!

Hey there! Always lovely to see you on the boards! My boys are 13 and 10 now. They eat the worst crap imaginable and they are still skinny. Genetics!

For an overweight child, I highly recommend having him get a fasting insulin test. In all likelihood, he is overweight because his metabolism is not carb-tolerant like the skinny kids that can get away with eating whatever they want. I am convinced that weight in childhood is genetic - yes, our environments REVEAL the metabolic differences (in other words, 100 years ago he wouldn't have had access to processed foods and so wouldn't have gotten overweight), but it's our genetics that decide if our body type gets to be skinny or not in the presence of refined carbohydrates. But our world is what it is, and it will be good for him to learn his carb tolerances now and not when he's 30 and more damage has been done. Even if it's not fair.

Hey, Auto! They did do a metabolic blood panel yesterday so we will see what that says. He is a huge carb lover like mom! Ha. I’m not focusing on the weight even though it looks like it from my post. Mostly I just want to help him build a less obsessive view of food because he really is completely food minded at all times! 😜

Well....once again, the holidays came and mom jumped ship. So we are back at it. Tobias struggles with snacking as much as I do...especially sweets. But we are recommitting to the No-S moderate way of living. I’ve been doing the gym consistently since November. Just gotta get the moderation in the eating and diet hopping under control.

So here we are!!

By the way...Automated, we did end up getting him fasting labs. His glucose and metabolic profile was mostly fine, but his cholesterol was borderline. He really is a carb fanatic. But the moderation of not snacking should really help.

Well, the quarantine definitely got us. Just eating three plates a day seems like it should be so simple! But the snacking and sweets just took over for both of us these past six months. I never stopped trying different types of fasting and every which thing...only to be back in the same exact spot!

So we are picking up the pieces. Over and over. I know I’m horrible at this, but I cannot stop trying! Especially when I know especially through Oolala’s example that nothing else out there is sustainable! I know I’m capable of not being horrible at this! One day at a time.

Tobias needs a good example. I have not been that for sure!! So we are back in it together, y’all. Starting with one plate and moving forward!!!

Hi & wb! It’s definitely harder not to snack while staying home so much. I think it’s great you are trying to model a healthy relationship with food for your son. I know when I was around 10, I started to gain a little weight and I went on my first diet (Scarsdale diet). My parents were ALWAYS on a diet so it just seemed like the natural thing to do. Unfortunately, it led me down a road of many many years of disordered eating. ( Never had a full blown eating disorder thankfully, but close enough.). Maybe if my parents would have known about NoS, I would have been saved from that fate. Also, if you haven’t read this book by Ellyn Satter, I can’t recommend it enough.

Linda: I just bought the book you recommended! Thank you so much. I look forward to reading through that this month!

The good news is the entire family is finally on board. Hubby and my 7-year-old will be joining Tobias and I. So this little journey for my family is exciting. We are also cleaning up our electronics habits and spending. All of it kind of goes together. Slow but steady. That’s the plan. I think I will try to check in once a week just so I’m not obsessively online every day. 👍👍

Hey! I haven’t been checking in here, but the beginning of the year I started back and have been successful with my three plates. The slow weight loss is what always gets in my head, but you know what? I will get there slowly but surely! Just gotta keep pushing. I will come check in here Fridays. I’m not writing down what I eat or doing any of those diet-y counting things anymore. I am trying to really just create the three plate habit with treats occasionally on the weekend and turn my emotional eating and diet obsession over to God. Tobias has been at it also, but we are not focusing on weighing him or anything. He is 13 now and growing! My main focus is to acquire a normal relationship with food this year to show my boys for their future.

Hope you had a good winter and are ready to melt into spring. If I may say, there are other good reasons to eat moderate meals and not much else besides weight loss, in case that's getting in the way. Those were what kept me at it. I honestly think I was so afraid of compulsively overeating for the rest of my life that I would have kept doing No S even if I hadn't lost weight. (But I had no health issues related to weight, either) But that probably sounds easy for me to say.

Hi, Friends. It’s me again.

I have finally started some counseling, something I have needed for a very long time. I am working on my obsession with dieting and weight loss and overeating and hating my body and my mental self talk and so much more. Tobias is also ready to get back to some healthier habits.

This time I want to do No-S for the habits and health and not be checking in on the scale so often. So I’m thinking possibly just a monthly weight check-in with the focus still mainly on the compliance/not the number. I do want to weigh to make sure I don’t need to adjust the WHAT I’m eating some. But for now I’m not worrying about that stuff. Three plates it is.

All the best with the counselling. I think that it it likely that 3 moderate meals a day will lead to at least some weight loss for most people if it is followed consistently. And it is much better for mental health than that awful cycle of diet, restrict, and then do the opposite.

Warmest wishes (even though it's summer) with this new perspective. I have long said that it's life in between meals that is going to be the last piece in the puzzle for me. I still obsess about all this more than I'd like. I hope it won't be considered part of the obsession to keep us abreast of your explorations beyond.

Wow! It’s already been another few months and I have jumped ship and come back yet again! Man! I don’t know how or when I am going to get it through my head that the shiny success stories and unrealistic plans won’t work for me. Slow but sure does work. I need to learn a bunch of patience.

We got a new military assignment a few weeks ago. This was a bit unexpected so we are scrambling. We have to sell the house and get to Georgia by January. I don’t want to stress eat and gain even more. So I’m thinking slow but consistent No-S is just the lifeline I need through this somewhat stressful time. My kids have to leave their friends yet again…and we have to leave a great church. It’s always hard. But this is a great assignment coming up. The military is our life the past 18 years. I need to pull up my big girl pants and go!

I’m still in counseling to deal with a lot of trauma. That has been very hard, but after pushing it down with food for more than 30 years it is time. Learning to love Amy is the hardest part. Keeping promises to myself. It’s gonna take time, right?! ❤️

It does take a lot to stop using food as a pain reliever and comforter, but things can get much better. All the best with the move.

Oh, wow, that sounds like a lot to deal with! You have the wisdom to know that it is going to take time, and hopefully with the support of your counselor, you can keep moving forward even while managing the move. It is a great idea to use the No-S framework to help keep your eating on track. Good luck with everything and hang in there!

Hooboy, selling and moving. At least it's a seller's market. Have you ever thought of hiring a management company to rent it out? It can mean taking some money out to put down on a new house, but it can pay off, though if it's likely top of the market where you are leaving, it could take awhile. I just know I wish I had never sold a rental I owned in AZ. Oh, well, hindsight and all that.

I gently suggest you think of whatever it takes to stick to N days as actually being less stressful than haphazard eating. Meals don't have to be perfect. But the psychological stability of knowing that you are feeding yourself regularly can be very calming. But I know it can be hard. You'd think I would have an easier time being retired but sometimes the one thing that shapes my day in terms of a (Zoom) social event will happen right at a good meal time. I wish I had a surefire remedy to tell you for that!

Oolala: We do have one property already in Texas that a property manager runs for us. 👍👍. I just don’t want to get too over my head with multiples. And this market is hot right now so selling is a really good option. BUT you are right…holding on to property is a VERY good idea!!!

I have had what I want to call a rather successful week. I stuck to mostly no snacking or seconds. I did have some sweets with my meals, but I plan to clean that up with time. Trying not to be so hard on myself and just get back to the habit of three plates and treats on the weekends. The fact that I am still here and not trying to start something new is already a win. (Sad but true 🥴)

Just making sure a few people I've interacted with have seen this. Sorry if I missed that you saw it.

We sold our house and are headed to our next base in a week or so. The holidays and all of the moving prep really got to me. But we are back in action. I have both kids and the hubs on board with No-S now. I am over the moon for the ENTIRE family to be working together to eat moderately. Yesterday was a Green Day for all!! My youngest son is 9 and woke up this morning hoping it was a weekend day. Poor guy. Haha. They have gotten used to lots of junk food and sugar so their bodies need a break too. I know for sure they will enjoy those S days! 🤣

That's great you have the whole family on the No-S page! Hope your move goes well!

Ditto on whole family. Those boys have no idea what a great favor it is not to be flooded with body reactions to sweets several days of the week. It's so not what we were designed for!

Hope the transition to new environs goes as smoothly as possible. We moved several times when I was a kid, but I was young enough that I got spared a lot of the harder details.

Well, not shockingly, I disappeared again. The good news is that I’m down in weight since my January check-in. Down to about 236 pounds. The bad news is that I didn’t do No-S at all. I did alternate day fasting and numerous other things. It’s just exhausting. This 30 year rollercoaster of dieting just takes such a toll on the mind and body. Tobias is 15 now. 😳. He struggles just like me but thankfully has youth on his side for now. Linc is 10 now. I can’t believe I was doing No-S when I was pregnant with him! And before! So I have known about this sanity for many many years but I just continue to not value the long slow journey. With the holidays in full swing I just need that structure but not a ton of rules.
Life update is that we are living in Georgia! My husband is almost to the end of his military career…maybe. 🤣. He has been in the Air Force 19 years. I continue to homeschool the boys, 9th grade and 4th grade. Life is seriously wonderful. It’s just this one area of my life that I continue to let control me…food and dieting. Oolala and so many of you here have continued to give me such great advice and love over all these years. I will be a No-S success story eventually. I seriously will! I know the problem
is my mind and just creating those new habits. Snacking and sweets are my worst. That’s what No-S really moderates for me. Why do I continue to do all these other things to restrict myself and then just go nuts? Habit. I have done it for so long that not doing it is gonna take REAL work.

Anyway, I really am giving this another real shot. Whatever I do has to be for life. Why not just eat like a normal person? Whatever that means! Hahaha. But seriously. Three plates a day with some treats on the weekend. Sounds so simple and sane…yet to put into practice has eluded me for years and years and years!

Hopefully you’ll hear from me again tomorrow…not another year from now! 😆

Good to hear from you again. Some of us are more susceptible to the siren call of tempting food (aka food reward) than others. My guess is it may be at least partly genetic. Unfortunately for us, we live in a world of 24/7 tempting food.

Welcome back! Glad to hear things are going well in the greater scheme of things, despite the frustration of feeling like you are treading water when it comes to food habits. But just keep hanging in there. I think a lot of us who have been here a long time can confirm that to really cultivate the habits, you have to just keep going, start anew each day, mark mistakes and then move on without beating yourself up too much. Focus on having three nice plates of food you enjoy each day. You can do this!

Oolala: I can’t see your recent PM, but I see you sent me a few in prior years that I missed!!

I was on vacation in Texas for pretty much all of December. We are back and the first week of the year had me trying to overcome the diet brain. In the end I spent most of the week fighting myself. No fun. This weekend has been a bit better, though. I did two meals yesterday. Today it’s looking like three. 👍. I think I’m gonna write my meals again for a while to be mindful of the three plates and create that habit again. I also committed to some daily exercise so I will track that on here also.

1/8 Sunday:
B: cereal with milk/coffee
L: shrimp veggie rice bowl
D: crackers/cheese/garlic stuffed olives/hot chocolate

Activity: walked 30 minutes

We have a lot of mental baggage to get rid of on our way to food sanity.
