Deb's daily check in

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

Deb's daily check in

Post by gratefuldeb67 » Sat Jan 16, 2021 4:54 pm

i'm starting again, after a long time away! i just posted a long intro in the general discussion, but i will be using this thread to either post a simple daily "success/failure" check in, or if i feel like it, more of a daily or weekly diary entry... i am committing to at mininum, doing the habit cal, and posting the results here, daily...
so, i'm starting out at 274.8 lbs, and hoping that this time i stick with NoS long term... ultimately, i'd like to lose about 100 lbs...
i know i'll be able to lose the weight... i just don't want to keep regaining it... i know that changing my life long habits is the only way i'll be able to do that...
wish me luck!

ok, so i've decided to take a non weekend s day today... it wasn't planned, and it will be the only one i allow myself, which isn't a sick or special day, going forward... it's not technically a sick day, but i had my first wellness check up this morning in several years, and i had to get blood tests done... this involved fasting last night, and this morning, and although my appointment was for 9:30 am, after getting the blood drawn in the lab, i then had to wait another hour and a half to have the consultation with my doctor... all together, it was nearly a three hour affair... i was famished and spaced out, and i decided to allow myself an "s"... i went and got a medium salted caramel hot chocolate at starbucks, with whipped cream... i won't be snacking though and will try not to have seconds on anything today... just really needed that drink... anyway, as i said, going forward, i will be strict and count non s day s's as a failure...
good news is that somehow, i am down a half pound, even after two s days... i think, just making the commitment to NoS again, kept them from being very excessive... either that, or maybe the fact that i was forced to stop eating earlier in the evening again? or both!? either way, it's good!
will report again tomorrow...

I think that’s an ok reason! Fasting always messes me up anyway and then taking blood! Double ugh! It’s all about moderation! Great job!

had a good day yesterday... success... i did feel pretty hungry before bed and allowed myself half a small pickle and about 1/2 cup of grapefruit segments, but i am not going to count that as a fail...
i must have been eating way more than i realized before, because the change to NoS is already translating to weight loss... i'm surprised and very happy!!
i'm down a few more pounds since yesterday!
i realize this probably will slow down after the first week (water weight etc etc) but i'm feeling even more motivated to stick to the plan now...
starting weight 274.8
current weight 271.6

failure tonight... had way too much food... there was no way i could justify what i did as "virutual" plating... it was very simply, "seconds"...
i had a full meal, and then i had a very large salad afterwards... if i had cut my meal in half, i would have counted it as a success, even with the large salad... but it was basically like having 2 dinners in one...
oh well! onward!
ps... i hemmed and hawed in my head for the whole night as to whether i should just "let this one slide" and count it as a success day, but in the end i have to be able to sleep at night and i don't want to bs myself! feel much better about being honest and counting it as a failure...
still, overall, a good day!

The great thing about No S is we just learn from our mistakes and move on. Just because we slipped up doesn’t mean the whole day is lost. It’s great you owned up to it because in the end your only hurting yourself by not being honest. Tomorrow is a new day!

success today!... i've decided since i really enjoy having salad with dinner, that as long as it's not loaded up with chicken or shrimp etc, and just vegetables, i'm going to allow a small 4th meal on those days i want salad... it's not wild and crazy or unaccountable snacking, and it's not really seconds either... it will be it's own discrete meal... if on the other hand, it's got protein too, then that will be the main meal and i won't have a 4th one...
if it slows my weight loss down a little, so be it... i need to be happy and know that what i'm doing i'll be able to maintain doing long term...
on a side note, i looked up the actual amount of sugar in the hot chocolate from dunkin donuts and was pretty shocked... i'll have to rethink that one and possibly try drinking tea or coffee again... even if i were to add 2 or 3 tsps of sugar, it would still be about 1/3 of what is in their hot chocolate...
will report again tomorrow :)

today is being counted as a failure... it wasn't terrible, but i want to be really honest with myself and strict with the rules... because if i start finagling around with them, that will just defeat the whole purpose of being here and trying to get these habits down... also, i don't like to bs myself, and would rather just call it what it is...
so, the 2 events which constituted the failure were, firstly, this morning, i got to work (at a restaurant) and they had just made a fresh batch of delicious bacon... it was just sitting there on the counter, and i HAD to have a few pieces... mentally, it hadn't even really registered as a fail at the time, but that's because i have become so habituated to being unconscious about my eating in the last year... later on, i realized i really need to call it what it was, opportunistic snacking... i didn't even think "hey i'm gonna virutally plate this towards my next meal"... BUT... it was good!! lol...
the other thing, was that i broke the no sweets rule, and had a donut... i brought in a dozen donuts to work and wasn't planning on having one... i just like to do something nice for my coworkers... but i ended up having one at around 3 when i finished work...
now, i am actually one of these people who has decided to take my s days, starting on friday evening, and ending sunday morning, but since this donut was eaten in the very bright light of day, and nowhere near sundown, again, i just felt, i can't blur these lines mentally, and i better just call it a fail...
i'm happy i'm being honest about this stuff... i would rather fail and be honest to myself, than lie and pretend it was a success... that in itself, is it's own kind of success to me... not b(S)sing lol...
i'm still down weight but the other day gained back a little...
have a great weekend all!

Oh I can remember the trays of bacon right out of the oven when I was working at a restaurant. Nothing harder to resist! I like that you are being so honest with yourself and drawing those hard lines. You got this!

Hey Deb, remember even a fail doesn't necessarily mean a gain, great that you can now recognise and acknowledge them it's half the battle to making a better choice next time.

Haha Linda! Yes, I actually really do love my cats. Especially one of them - he is such a cuddler. They are brothers and almost 12 years old now. They are very beautiful tabby cats - one is orange & white with matching orange eyes, and the other is gray & white with bright green eyes.

Sorry for the hijack Deb! :-) We're so glad to have you back that I am comfortably chatting on your thread! I feel like I know you since when I first joined I read a bunch of your posts from the early days. And I always thought your son looked like the sweetest boy - he has such a gentle look about him.

so, i've never felt that one should restrict their S days at all, with extra rules... and still feel that way... but man oh man, i really made some bad choices yesterday, on an impulse... a bad bad impulse... result, i am up heavier than my starting weight now... i won't log it though because, i don't want to flog myself publicly for an S day indiscretion... also, it, most likely, will go back down again in another day or so, since what i ate was extremely salty and i'm sure half of the weight or more, was due to water retention... i don't want to make myself neurotic...
but as much as i still believe the S day rules should stay in tact and unaltered, i am definitely going to be a lot more discriminating on S days and try not to make completely ridiculously bad choices!! in this case, it was getting a bag of chips, a large size queso dip, and a humongous sized burrito bowl, which, and i'm really not kidding, was nearly the size of a football!! gahhhh!!
i'm a little bit pissed at myself, because before deciding to get this, which btw, i rarely ever go there anymore, so it was kind of a treat thing, but i was telling myself, "this is NOT a good plan deb! don't do it!" and i didn't listen to myself...
if i had chosen one or the other of the food options, and not both, i wouldn't be so annoyed, but i didn't... i plain old, pigged out...
i felt terrible afterwards too, so it wasn't even really pleasurable...
oh well! as we say here, i'm going to "mark it and move on" and try to listen to and respect my intuitive "little voice" next time...

i should also mention that i replaced the battery on my digital scale on saturday... to be honest, i'm not sure if my starting weight was at all accurate, because when i weighed myself that day and for several days afterwards, i'd get crazy different numbers which ranged between 1-3 lbs apart...
so just for the record, i will update my weight now with the more accurate reading now that the battery was replaced...
i'm a little down but not too much because i am pretty sure the scale wasn't right to begin with...
onward!

thanks!
well, i didn't want to go into details this morning, but what happened was that i foolishly bought some sweet cereal yesterday evening, and couldn't resist having a few bowls of it before bed... i knew that would happen when i bought it, but i just didn't listen to my inner voice which was telling me not to buy it...
after breakfast today, i decided to dump the rest of the cereal in the box, in the toilet!!
i was so proud of myself for doing that! i knew that if i kept it in the house, i'd end up doing the same thing today, tomorrow etc, until the cereal was gone... i didn't want to do that to myself!
had a good day today, so unless something goes totally wrong later tonight, i'm going to count it as a success!

Now THAT is a 100% victory! Pouring sugary cereal in the toilet is the modern day difficulty-equivalent of hunting a saber-tooth tiger. Good job!

thanks a lot auto!
so, yesterday evening was fine, and no slip ups... so glad i didn't keep that cereal because throwing it out really psyched me up for a good day, and i did have one... i even had a very stressful thing which happened at work and it didn't make me screw up...
i ate well, but not to excess, not choosing super junky foods and no bs'sing myself... happily, today my weight reflected that...
i'm now back down to 274.6... yay!!!

failed last night... it wasn't terrible, and the foods i ate weren't really bad choices, but i did too much "virtual" plating... this could almost be classed as snacking or seconding... it was all in small amounts, but it nevertheless, wasn't really accountable... so for the sake of strict habit building, i am calling it what it is... meanwhile, i still lost weight! yay! now down to 274.2...

yesterday was a success!! i had lots of nice food options and also picked up some high quality S's for weekend treating, but i didn't overdo anything and stuck to my plan of having 3 meals... one of my meals was a bowl of pumpkin soup with sauerkraut and a dollop of greek yogurt, and i also counted the medium salad i had as part of that same meal, not a second one... that's one of my slight exceptions to NoS is that i allow myself a salad as long as it's not huge and with protein on it, as a kind of "3.5'rd" meal...
somehow, with all the good eating, and a few S's after dinner, i have managed to drop some more weight!! so excited!!! i really wasn't expecting that...
so now my weight is down from 277 last tuesday, to 273.2
yay!!! :)

thanks lpearlmom! :)
so, the weekend was pretty good and i did enjoy several S treats and foods i don't usually have, like pizza, but nothing very excessive, so i'm happy about that... i didn't over indulge, which i really prefer, than out of control binging...
i had to mark yesterday as a fail, because i chose to eat some cookies and a glass of chocolate milk last night... i probably wouldn't have had it if it wasn't in the house, but i had bought a small bag of shortbread cookies a few days earlier and there were a handful left of them... it really wasn't that much, and that's one of the reasons i used to justify eating them, so... gotta watch out for that kind of thinking... long term, that "little handful" will just keep me from losing weight and feeling good...
will be avoiding buying stuff like that unless it's single serving for S days from now on... i just don't need to set myself up for failure by having leftovers tempting me in my cupboard...
but all in all, a good last few days!

Yeah, keeping the stuff out of the house is the best strategy. Which doesn't work at my house, since I live with 2 boys and a hubby that all love to have doritos in the house. I've decided doritos are my cryptonite. You know how people give up alcohol for a year (indeed I did that!)? I should do that with doritos.

that's not an easy situation... would they be open to joining you in keeping doritos for S days? i'm sure they care about your success as much as you and their/your health... as much as they love their chips, you'd probably be surprised how willing they might be in supporting you this way, if you just ask for their help... also, they might actually end up enjoying them even more, when they look forward to having them as a treat, instead of a daily thing...
chips are most people's "kryptonite"... i think superman himself would have a hard time saying no, if jorell was sitting around eating doritos in the fortess of solitude all the time, and waving that bag at him with that nacho cheesy smell!!

had a pretty big dinner last night and just ate too much at one sitting... it wasn't enough to constitute a "failure" but i was uncomfortable and really didn't enjoy that feeling!! i'm amazed at how my body and mind are starting to adjust to NoS... this would have been a normal dinner for me before restarting here... i'm glad it doesn't feel normal anymore!! very happy about this shift!!

Definitely that's a victory to notice and want to avoid that "overly full" feeling.

Oh, and no - my family is NOT going to save Doritos for S Days. ;-) However, I can do this - but like you, I'm trying to find my NoS groove again. For me, 2020 was a very bumpy year with my habits. Strange because I had more time than ever before.

I've whined about it before but I sure miss getting the email alerts when there are new posts on threads I'd like to follow.

Seeing that it's so easy to eat more than is comfortable is a boon. And valuing not doing that... that seems to be pretty central in meal-based slim cultures. It doesn't fit the No S one-sentence maxim, but we've all had to add some fine tuning.

Keep going!

thanks Soprano!!
well, i have been totally awol this week from checking in on my habit cal... not happy about that, and i can't really make any excuse for it other than i have been a little busy and distracted...
i'm gonna make sure to not let myself slip like that anymore...
no exciting news on my weight today... it's gone up and down the same 2 lbs for the last few days, but nothing extreme...
i'm planning on having a good week!!
feeling really determined to lose weight... what is so nice, is knowing through experience, that if i stick with the basics of NoS, that i will definitely be able to maintain whatever weight i lose!!
so far, since i rejoined in mid January, i have gone down from 277, to now, 269... i know that's slow, but as long as i don't gain it back, that's really what's most important to me!!

Remember how upsetting that was. Ironically, feeling regret by itself at the time of an infraction is not a habit shaper; recalling the regret and wanting to avoid it can be a powerful motivator. But it took a lot of me fooling myself before the scales, no pun intended, tipped and I could suffer through intense irritation of saying no in the moment because I just knew even worse pain awaited me if I gave in. How many years had I already given over to such a low success rate? Almost 40 years for me. It was either do it, or just quit fighting at all and accept the consequences. Ugh.

So, today was my first red day, in the past 13 days!!
I only had one, medium size chocolate chip cookie, and tbh I probably could have rationalized it as a belated S day treat, since this weekend was insane with work an I really didn't have hardly any treats on the weekend, except for one Klondike bar at the end of a really long and stressful weekend!!
But, I honestly feel better keeping the rules in tact and not blurring the lines!! If I do that today, I'm sure I'll find lots of other "exceptions" to the rules, which I could somehow rationalize, but which will just make my choices more ambiguous and probably hurt my long term success with losing weight!!
So, I'm marking it red and fine with that!!

Very true about the rationalizations. I have learned from my anti-binge coaching training that randomness is the major problem. Keeping it very strictly to S days (and possibly later mods) is so helpful to reduce the mental burden. Reinhard uses the metaphor of training a water buffalo. It doesn't get to make eating decisions! Even a water buffalo will likely overeat if it gets the chance. We don't live in a culture that helps us manage the availability of food. We have to create our own culture of sanity!

Thanks WIN!!💜

Well, this week hasn't been a very good one for weight loss or habits!! I've had a few meals which were definitely overeating, especially tonight!!
I waited too long to have dinner and then made a really bad choice of getting a huge baked ziti from a restaurant!! I promised myself I would only eat half, but ended up eating double portions and feeling horrible afterwards!!
I've already put a few pounds back on, and I'm expecting the scale to go up more from this meal!!
The only good thing about this, was recognizing how terrible it feels to eat so much!! At least this isn't my normal!!
So, it's my second red day!!
Starting over tomorrow!!💜

Going through that process of overeating and acknowledging how bad it makes you feel is part of the process. It makes it easier not to do it again. You draw on the experience and in future rather than have to exercise willpower to not overeat you simply choose not to because it makes you feel bad.

Hi Deb,

Please, PLEASE don't let that experience - or your concern that the scale may reflect an increase due to the large ziti meal - discourage you. I don't think you are, based on how you ended your post by stating your intention to begin again in the morning, but I did want to send some encouragement your way, just in case

I have TOTALLY been in that situation. While it can be so demoralizing in the moment, it is only ONE moment, ONE meal, and definitely doesn't deserve to be given the power to derail you. I know you can get back on track. I am rooting for you.

Sending you cyber-encouragement! Best regards, WIN

Aww!! You're so sweet!!💜
Thank you WINhappy!!🥰
I'm getting back on track!!
Yesterday I had a green day, despite being very upset and some bad stuff that happened!!
I managed to have a very spartan eating day and didn't console myself with ice cream!!
Today, however, was a red day!!
I skipped lunch and by the time I ate dinner I was ravenous!!
I ate dinner, and the lunch I skipped at one sitting!!
Yes, I could rationalize to myand say the calories and overall quantity of food for the day was the same as a green day, but I honestly think, it's better not to do that because I don't want to overeat at any one meal!! That is my worst of all three S habits!! Sweets and snacks were never my issue!!
Stuffing myself to the point of being overly full, is the primary habit I want to break!!
So, I'm being honest with myself, marking it red, and moving on!!

Skipping lunch & eating a big dinner to compensate is against the spirit of NoS. Congrats on deciding to mark it red in the interest of practicing moderation and establishing regular eating habits. Not an easy thing to do

I am by no means recommending fasting but just want to share from a fasting expert that he learned not to give himself permission to eat more after a fast. What he had or hadn't eat didn't really determine what a reasonable meal was. The old habit will make it seem very attractive to have a bigger meal, but it doesn't actually make sense, if we have fat in the body to draw on. It might be better to commit to having at least something at meal times, even something small, so it can break the pattern.

May I ask what happens that leads to skipping lunch? The only time that happened in any natural way for me was when I was taking an ADHD drug. Any real hunger cues went away. I would find myself at the computer thinking, I'll quit and eat lunch in a minute, but the short lunch period ( I was a teacher) would end. I would usually have lunch with me, so I might eat it after students left, but if I didn't, I would still eat the same dinner. I actually quit the drug because of that phenomenon. I didn't want to give myself a reason to mess with the routine.

Best to you!

Thanks!! Up until just a few weeks ago, I was doing a very low paying delivery job, and because I usually never had money till I was finished with my shift and could cash out, I would often have to wait to eat until late in the day!!
It wasn't an attempt to fast...
