Zoid checkin

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

Zoid checkin

Post by Zoid » Tue Feb 16, 2021 2:59 pm

So here I am again.

Gave birth to my second daughter (E) in July and it’s time to drop this baby weight! We’re not planning on any more kids, so I’m looking to find something sustainable. I had lost 70 lbs by calorie counting before I had my first daughter (S, she’s 3), but I wasn’t able to lose much after her. Stress and tiredness just don’t lend themselves to tracking food daily. Also, I want to set a positive example for my girls.

Since I am breastfeeding, I am adding a small mod from the get go. I will have a small snack after dinner. I really don’t want to lose my milk supply.

I took S skiing for the first time a few weeks ago and boy is Mama out of shape! It’s a lot of work to help a preschooler ski and I was so sore. I’ve been running for a few months now, but I’m working on building my mileage and I need to add some strength training to help my poor legs with skiing time.

This month I’m focusing on N day compliance and keeping up with my water intake (super important for milk supply especially when dropping calories).

Yesterday was a success. I didn’t go for my run. S is on school break and I usually run on the treadmill when E naps while S is at school. I was going to run after bedtime for the girls, but I was exhausted. This is going to be an issue all summer if I don’t come up with a plan to deal with it.

Anyway, I stuck to 3 meals + 1 snack and drank all my water, so success!

Sounds like you’re off to a great start! My girls are two years apart and I can remember how tough those early days are. Getting a shower in let alone a workout was tough enough! So important to keep yourself a priority though that’s great you’re trying to figure out a plan for exercise. It’s such a great stress reliever.

Great to see you on the boards, Zoid! Like Linda, I also remember those "tired" years with little ones. My boys are 15 and 11 now and life is much easier! I get SOOOO much more sleep! So hang in there, and try to focus on just making good food choices. In the big scheme of things, nutrition has a bigger impact on weight loss than exercise, and also - you are already MOVING a lot, you know? You just aren't "working out". And for long-term health, movement throughout the day is what is most important, rather than those more intense workouts. Don't get me wrong, I think exercise is great and has a million benefits. But for most people, when their kids are little, that just can't be a top priority. We can't prioritize everything, ya know?

Thanks, automatedeating. I’ve always been a perfectionist and if one thing slips I give up on everything else. It’s so hard because I put these expectations on myself.

Yesterday was a success! Three meals and drank all my water.

Mr Zoid accepted a new job offer yesterday and gave his notice at work. So when he got home, he said we should order some take out to celebrate. Normally a change in my food plan for the day will throw me into a tailspin (because I’ve always lost weight counting calories). But I ate half of my dinner I ordered (too much food for one meal!) and then stuck to my plan. I even skipped my evening snack because I still felt full.

I ordered some new furniture for the mudroom and managed to put both pieces together all by myself yesterday. I’m super sore today, so I guess that counts as a workout, lol.

I even managed to run after the girls went to bed. Goal today is to make it through the today to make it a green week!

Congratulations on the green days and your soon-to-be green week! I originally started No S when my middle daughter was nursing. It was very necessary because I was so hungry ALL THE TIME from nursing. I tried to cut calories and count them but it felt impossible with that level of hunger.

It sounds like you are really doing great with your N days and making sure to get plenty of water. And good for you for getting out there for a run!

Thanks pinkhippie and ladybird!

Another green day yesterday! I almost failed due to a box of Valentine’s candy. I even picked up the box, but then I thought about how good it would feel to finish out the week all green and put it back down. Now it’s there waiting for me today!

Plan for the weekend is water, run today, and a hike tomorrow. Mr Zoid and I have been hiking every weekend with the girls. It was our New Years resolution. It helps both of us manage our stress when we get out into nature and breaks up the monotony (especially mid winter). We just dress everyone in snowsuits, put the baby in the ergo carrier, and off we go. Certainly gets lots of energy out of our 3 year old. She likes to stomp around in the deep snow instead of staying on the path.

Congratulations on a fully green week and avoiding the Valentine's candy!

I love that you and your family go hiking every weekend. We do the same thing except for only every other weekend right now because the girls stay at their grandparents every other Saturday. When my girls were younger though, we went all the time because it was such a lifesaver to pop the baby in the carrier and go because it kept the baby happy and gave the younger one something to do and bonus! Exercise for mom :)

Auto- he starts mid March. He’s taking a little over a week in between, so it’ll be nice to have him home. He rarely takes time off and he used all his time last year when the baby was born.

Pinkhippie- you are so right. The hikes are so great for some family time. We had a nice hike yesterday! It wasn’t super cold, which makes it more fun. I can’t wait for springtime hikes.

This weekend was a little heavier on the sweets than I would like, but overall it’s my first weekend, so it is what it is. I was already finding that the sugar was too much just after not having any during the week, so that points to naturally moderating in the future.

Mr. Zoid mentioned wanting to try out No S himself. He’s been calorie counting along with me and is as sick of it as I am. It would definitely make it easier to avoid the nighttime snacking to not have him munching away next to me.

Auto- electrolytes are definitely helpful with milk. I brought a container of powdered Gatorade packets with me to the hospital (they’re also helpful during labor). I drank a bottle every day for the first month. It certainly helps break up the monotony of all that water. I’ve been using water flavor enhancers once a day since, but it is a good point that I could add a daily Gatorade back if I need to. I think I still have some somewhere...

Yesterday was green! I had a few moments where I had that urge to head for the pantry, but was able to say no. It’s certainly helpful that this isn’t my first go at No S. I didn’t even have my evening snack. I wasn’t hungry and I didn’t want to have a snack in front of Mr Zoid who was on his first N day ever (he had a green day too).

A green day yesterday! I was able to do my run when E was napping while S was at school. My MIL usually comes up on Wednesdays to see the girls and stays with the baby while I take S skiing for a few hours. She can’t come today, so everyone is bummed.

Mr Zoid said he’s lost 2.5lbs this week (great for him, he’s been struggling since E was born to drop weight and has been maintaining despite all his efforts).

Skiing is one of those sports/recreation activities that does not lend itself to being supported by jogging/running. About ten years ago, all Fall, I jogged on the road and treadmill. When the ski hill opened I drove the 25 minutes to get there and was in for quite a surprise. It is not a big hill, skikelly.com, but my first run I had my hands on my knees half way down. I rode the chair during one run with a patrol and told him of my predicament. He laughed and said the samething happened to him. He was not jogging, but using a stepper. A few days later a work mate told me to do wall sits. In Her Majesty's Secret Service Bond did deep knee bends. Which I found worked as well as wall sits. So go ahead sit on that wall. Find a baseline and go from there. I have skied both alpine and cross-country, Nordic Track aside I think downhill is more robust than cross country. Eventually that soreness goes away.

Good luck.

O43- thanks for the advice. I wasn’t prepared for there to even be a ski season this year! I haven’t skied myself in probably 8 years. It’s so hard with the pandemic. We were trying to limit the baby’s exposure to basically anyone until after she hit 6 months. So we were doing outside only visits with grandparents until then. So suddenly, she was 6 months, my MIL was coming over once a week, and a friend asked me if we wanted to ski with her and her son. It was a perfect storm of unreadiness. The last couple of times we went were much better.

Green day yesterday! I even did some yoga after the girls went to bed.

Yesterday was a green day. I also was able to get some yoga done!

Getting my steps in was a little easier than I expected based on past experience. I broke it down into 3 mini goals: 3333 by lunch, 6666 by dinner, and 10000 by bed. I hit the 10000 before dinner, so that seemed to work. Breaking it down so that I’m more active throughout the day helped!

Yes, I often do the same when I am trying to hit a steps target. It makes it more manageable.
The other way is to get a good chunk of my steps by a morning walk, & pick the rest up through
incidental activity during the day. Either way gets me out of my chair.
Three meals a day - not too little not too much, but just right

Yesterday was a green day food wise, but I didn’t hit my steps. I wasn’t too far under.

Ladybird- I’ve been wearing a Fitbit for 7 years now. I used to hit the 10,000 every day with a little bit of effort when I worked. But since staying home, it’s been harder!

Yesterday was super cold and extremely windy. I wasn’t able to get outside with the girls. My main exercise of the day was chasing our recycling bins around the yard and collecting our recyclables from ours and our neighbors yards.

LOL! Sorry, I really sympathize. I have days where that is my exercise too. It always seems like in spring, the heavy winds come only on our trash and recycling pick-up day!)

Pinkie- it’s so true! Wind just seems to know when it’s most inconvenient to make an appearance.

Yesterday was a green day and I got my steps done.

I was able to take S skiing and she did so well! She decided after a few runs that she wanted to ski “by herself” instead of me holding onto her. So I let go and she did great!

Mr Zoid has some time off starting today! So we might go skiing again since he hasn’t been with us at all.

Me too! Me too! The wind in my town can be crazy wild, and I always dread cleaning up garbage so I'm a little OCD about when I put the cans out and how I "monitor" them while I wait for the garbage and recycle guys.

A green day yesterday and I hit my step goal.

We had a busy, fun day yesterday. Mr Zoid and I took turns going for runs, so I got to run outside and not on the dreadmill. Then we went skiing after we picked up S from school. You can see the whole beginner slope from one of the picnic areas at the ski hill (it’s just a small hill about 10 minutes away, but it’s great for learning), so we switched off who was with S and who was with the baby at the picnic tables. We had a great time!

I ended up with a green day on Friday which gives me 21 days!! Woo Hoo!

This weekend was pretty low key. I didn’t end up working out at all and definitely didn’t hit my step goal either day. But we got some good family time in. My mom came over yesterday and played with S. E is not a fan and screams every time my mom comes near her. She calmed down enough that she would play in the same room as my mom as long as I was there. But she kept an eye on her the whole time. I’m hoping more exposure will get her over this.

We’re planning to ski again today. The rest of the week is going to get warm, so we want to go one more time before I think the season is over. So sad.

Had a green day yesterday, but didn’t quite hit my steps. I ended up sitting down to start a mermaid tail blanket I’m making for S, so it was time well used.

We went skiing yesterday and used a ski harness for S for the first time. It was so much easier than holding onto her with hands or a hula hoop. And she was skiing under her own power with just us slowing her down and steering her if needed. She did awesome and if we were going to go again, I’d try her with the real ski lift, but I think we’re done for the season. They’re not making snow at night anymore and it’s going to hit 60 degrees multiple days in a row this week. So I think that’s it. But I’m excited for next year. I think we’re going to get her lessons to teach her how to turn and stop.

All my girls except one were very alarmed by people they didn't live with as babies. My babies were not the kind that got handed around at family gatherings! But, eventually, they did warm up to relatives given enough time. Hopefully, E will start feeling familiar with your mom soon. Especially as she gets older and sees S. playing with her.

That ski harness sounds awesome!

So last week was a whirlwind of activity with Mr Zoid being off work. I ended up with 3 red days 😞 but for two of them it was only a one s red day instead of turning into complete binge fest. For example, one day we did our spring time burning and S wanted s’mores. So I had a s’more with her. I really don’t feel too bad about it because we were out of our normal routine and I didn’t completely fall apart.

I hit my step goals on a few days, didn’t on others. My knee has been bugging me, so I think I need to rest it a little so no running this week.

S has been having some “afraid of the dark” sleep issues lately, so between that and daylight savings, our sleep has been shot. Survival is the key right now.

Had a green day yesterday food wise, but didn’t hit my steps. I knew the step goal would be a challenge for me, so I’m just going to keep it as a goal until I start hitting it regularly. I did do some yoga before bed, so that’s a win.

No school for S today due to being short staffed. We’ll have to come up with something fun to do today.

Only a few days until Mr Zoid’s birthday!

Had a green day yesterday. Today is going to be cleaning the house and prepping for S’s bday parties this weekend. April is birthday month for almost our whole family so Easter gets swallowed up sometimes. Congrats on getting your vaccine scheduled! I was grateful they finally opened them to everyone 16 and up in my state.

Ok, this weekend was crazy with 2! birthday parties for S, one for each side of the family. I can’t wait until we can have larger gatherings again. I’m hoping to be able to do one big party for E’s first birthday in July.

Too many red days for my liking right now. I do better to have a real goal. When each day is on its own, I’m more likely to let things slide. So my new goal is to be green until my birthday in May.

Had a green day yesterday. Got my first COVID vaccine! Super exciting!

Today is low key. My MIL is here to play with the girls and I’m going to do a little cleaning and relax.

Ok, so yesterday and today have both crashed and burned. Ugh. We have snow today (come on! It’s April!!) and it rained yesterday. S’s school is on break this week and next. The combo of both girls home, being stuck inside, and leftover birthday cake is more than I can handle. We also ate lunch too late and I got the munchies. This is all part of the process, right? I’m trying to identify my triggers, but ugh!

I did get up early to workout before the girls were up this morning. I’ve resigned myself to the fact that I won’t workout after bed time. I’m too tired. I’m so not a morning person, but the real lack of working out for the last month has been really hard on my mental health. Mr Zoid gets up early to workout, so we’re just going to get up together and switch days. So I’ll do strength training on days he goes and runs and vice versa. I’m so blessed to have such a great partner.

Flylady! :-) I always admire those of you that keep a clean house so systematically!!!!

And that is super neat about the morning workouts tag-teaming with your hubby. I like that plan!

Auto - I’ve tried her system to varying degrees of success in the past, but never really stuck to it. I’ve been feeling overwhelmed lately and it’s nice to have someone telling you exactly what to do sometimes. I think her system compliments No S nicely. It’s all about building habits.

Yesterday was a holiday for Massachusetts, so Mr Zoid had the day off. We had a lot of fun playing outside and enjoying some nice weather!

Doing well so far this week. I’m kid free today! My mil is fully vaccinated, so we’re testing out her taking the girls. She used to take S once a week and we’d like to get back to that. Not doing much fun today, errands, cleaning, and budget, but all those things help with stress levels later.

Got a lot done yesterday, even if I wasn’t super active. Didn’t get much sleep last night. The poor baby is teething. So I decided sleep was more important than getting up this morning to run. Hopefully I can fit some sort of workout in later.

Ugh, red day yesterday. My trigger was definitely being tired. Today will be green. I’m determined. I need to get out of this rut.

Got up and went for my run. Today is looking like a nice day, so hopefully we can spend time outside.

How is flylady going this month? I haven't formally tried to follow her plan, but I think you must have inspired me because I have been doing more systemic cleaning this month.

Auto - it’s going ok. I’m not necessarily hitting everything every day, but it’s better. Trying not to let the perfectionist in me make me throw in the towel. It’s amazing how when we can’t do something perfectly, we think we shouldn’t even bother. Half done is better than not done.

I’m doing well this week. I even got up this morning and went for a run. Busy couple of days coming up. Mr Zoid is in a wedding this weekend, so I have the girls by myself. Looking to stay focused and no stress eating!
