TeacherJ's Journal

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

TeacherJ's Journal

Post by TeacherJ » Mon Jul 26, 2021 1:37 pm

I started following a low carb diet in June. This allowed me to get a handle on my cravings. Sweets and starchy junk foods are my biggest problem. Even though I felt great eating low carb, I wasn't losing weight. After reflecting and reading I realized I was eating too many calories. I had exchanged the starchy junk snacks for fatty, high calorie snacks. I tried calorie counting for about a minute, but knew immediately it wasn't for me. I knew I needed to reign in my caloric intake without having to do a lot of tracking. No S to the rescue! I love the habit tracking. I am two weeks in now. My clothing fits better. I am eating a moderate carb intake. I think I have finally found the right combination. It has only taken me 15 years.

I don't weigh myself very often, so I have decided to use my clothing as my progress tracker.

I am so excited to journal here and share my journey. I am hoping that I can find encouragement when I hit those tough moments that are sure to come.

You have already learned such great lessons! I started this over eleven years ago when I was 56 yrs. old. I lost most of my weight over a couple of years eating mostly 40/30/30 (CFP) on N days just because I had already learned that was a good mix for me from meals I ate on WW and I knew what those plates looked like. There were other fine points, but this is your thread! There are so many factors that affect how the body burns what we eat and what it stores, but it really does come down to a balance of in and out. Cheers to your finding your right way!

It definitely works, I found it was a great first step in my journey.

I started with nos rules then went low carb with IF to address blood sugar issues.

Perhaps aim to get one habit solid first? Don't stop aiming for the others but perhaps not view it as a fail if you don't manage it. :)

Thanks ladybird and soprano!

I think some of it is anxiety about the upcoming school year. I will be at a new school this year. I will also be teaching a new grade level. Then there are all the COVID issues to worry about. I am having a hard time because there are so many unknowns, and I don't feel prepared.

I think focusing on one habit for now is a good idea, Soprano. I think I will just try my best to avoid snacking. If I need something a little sweet, even if it is low-carb, I will add it to my meal.

I have to keep reminding myself that this is a season and seasons change. If I can make it through this season without gaining weight, I will be OK with that.

I think that starting with avoiding snacking sounds good, as is just concentrating on one habit at a time when you already have a lot on your mind.

A period of not gaining weight is good - it is called maintenance, and is also a skill we need to have to permanently lose weight.

I agree just maintaing is a win. So many go hard at weight loss and are successful but don't learn how to maintain and then they rebound.

Slowly slowly wins the race in permanent weight loss.

Easing yourself into the habits is quite valid, especially if you see it as getting ready for weight loss later, like training wheels.

I was a teacher for 23 years. I kind of hoped I would not go back to substitute teach, though it is good pay in my district. But I think the technical demands will be even greater in the future so that kind of sealed my fate.

I wish it looked like things were going to smooth out soon, but so many factors are extending this. It will make for interesting stories in ten years!

Teaching has certainly changed. I love working with the students, but COVID really damaged things for me. It will pass in time. I just have to figure out how to not let the stress overwhelm me. I think controlling my eating is a good way to do that.

I used to mix up planning with dieting, but a few times I've had to plan more carefully and it actually made it easier later to just look at my plan and pull out the food. I was trying to use up stores of what I had so the food was already there. This is making me think I should do that again...

Well, I made it through the first two weeks of school. It was major stressful. All I could do was come home and crash on the couch most days.

My goal is to start checking in daily. I think it helps with accountability.
I am sticking to the NO SNACKING habit. I add some sugar free chocolate or a protein bar (which is basically a candy bar as far as my body is concerned) with my meal if I am craving something sweet. In between meals, I stick to water or black coffee. Sometimes I add some drink enhancer to the water to fight cravings, but I don't do that every day.

Honestly, I prefer keeping the same routine for weekends. I have had so many years of overeating snack-type foods that I hate the experience. I hate the way I feel after a binge. I know that technically the plan is supposed to be liberating because you can eat snacks and sweets on weekends, but right now I think keeping all my days the same is more helpful. I am not naturally a routine person when it comes to self-care. At work, I am super routine! I stay organized because I keep lists and remain consistent. I think I need to use the same system with eating and exercise.

Yes, I too have found that keeping much the same routine on weekends is helpful. A bit of latitude can be useful sometimes,
but I like the 3 meals a day structure too much to throw it out the window on the weekends.

Hi TeacherJ!

Same here with keeping the same structure on the weekends. I do let myself snack if I am really hungry and need the food but I try to organize my meals so that doesn't happen. And it's nice to have the flexibility on weekends but honestly, I feel like it's easier to stick to the habit if I do it 7 days a week. And I enjoy my meals so much more without snacking. It feels completely unnatural to eat after dinner after several years of NO S. Even on weekends, I rarely eat after dinner. The habit is that strong.

Glad you made it through the first 2 weeks of school! I can only imagine how stressful it is this year!

Hello again!

Life has been crazy, but things are starting to calm down. I really want to get back to checking in here daily. Right now, I am eating 4 times per day. I accepted the fact that I need that small snack between lunch and dinner. I try to make it a protein based snack so I don't set off cravings. I still stick to the same routine on the weekends. Sweets and processed starchy snacks just don't work for me. I can never stop eating them after a reasonable amount. It is the same for things that use artificial sweetener. I know some people believe that we should be able to eat "just enough" and stop, but that isn't the case for me. So...

My plan:

Some people can moderate, others are better off abstaining. I also tend to belong to the abstainers, but it does depend on the food.

I have had a pretty good week, but I am terrible about logging in here.

5k steps does take intention. It is much harder on weekends. I am thinking of upping my target on weekdays and lowering my target on weekends. I can get at least 4k at work and then hit my 5k mark by moving a little more at home, but I have to remind myself. I will do it my jogging in place while doing some simple tasks. I wonder if I can get to 6K during the week??

Checking in

I am still on the path. I have worked my way down to three meals. I found that if I just plan to eat a small meal when I get home that I don't want the dinner that I prepare for the family. I kept thinking I needed to eat a "proper" meal for dinner, but I don't. So, a typical day may look like this:

Meal #1 (5-6 am): 2-3 eggs, 2 slices toast, 2 pcs bacon, coffee with half and half
Meal #2 (11-12 pm): 2-3 cups mixed roasted vegetables, grilled chicken breast (or whatever I cooked the night before)
Meal #3 (4-5 pm): medium apple, 2 oz cheese, 2 oz deli slices, mixed nuts, coffee with half and half (sometimes I have popcorn with this; It depends on what I am craving)

Of course, my meals vary day to day, but this is the pattern that I have settled into. I feel good, I feel satisfied. I just drink tea while my family eats dinner. It's no big deal. They don't mind.

I haven't been as consistent with exercise, but I am working on that.

How nice that you have figured out a pattern that works for you! Sometimes I think if we can work with our natural hunger schedule, and like you, eat a bit earlier, it really helps to stick to the No-S pattern.

The last time I posted in my journal was 1 year ago. I had figured out a plan, but somehow, I got sidetracked. I don't even remember why. One day I just realized I wasn't following the plan anymore. I feel like a failure for sure. Another year gone by and I still have the same weight problem plus I have a few health issues that have popped up. I really need to make changes.

My plan:

No S
15 Minute exercise routine
8K steps

Here I go...again

Teachers are pretty busy people, especially with a family, but I have found regular updates here very useful. This especially applies to finding patterns where I am drifting off plan, and seeing what works to get me back on track. There is a reason I am still doing this after all this is time.

Hi ladybird!
Yes, I think keeping a journal is helpful especially since I don't have anyone in my life to walk this journey with. DH is supportive, but doesn't quite "get it" since he is a naturally slim man. I don't like sharing at work either because people tend to add their opinions or assume things about how/what I eat. That is irritating to me.

Posting here for me in the process was pivotal, although it was a bit of another compulsion. But I just think our influences against pleasurable moderation are so insidious that it can take a lot of brainwashing to oppose it. And there's the internal influence of that reptilian brain that I was taught in my coaching course can use the language ability to make its case. It is NOT the voice of the prefrontal cortex where more of what we actually are as a human is located. The words seem to have so much credibility but it's more like a snake in a very convincing Halloween costume animating a tape recorder that uses all this language that sounds so similar to true reasoning. It evolved when humans didn't have a consistent food supply so if that ever gets triggered by perceiving less food, it starts the alarms with body sensations and thoughts justifying eating. But we know no one ever starved on three reasonable plates of food a day. Even the reptile can calm down when it is fed consistently with nourishing food. Eventually, it can stay pretty calm even when we have a small meal or a few days of less., but even if it doesn't ,we/PFC knows better! At the begining, if old urges came up, I would think about the meal I had had before and think about the one upcoming, which I usually had an idea of or if I did not, I have a guide for myself what could go on the plate. I ate before, I will eat again, and it's just a few hours, not forever as the urges would imply. Plus I would also think of what I call my snack bar in my bottom and thighs! I would sometimes even say, body, go to the snack bar! There is no reason for the body to ever tap into the snack bar if we don't eat a little less than we need some of the time.

Just think how great it will be next December to look back on a year of sane eating! However much weight loss there is or isn't, sane eating is its own reward.
