Carolyn's Check In

I stumbled across No S years ago, thought it sounded superbly reasonable, and then…forgot about it. I remembered it a few months back when I was gearing up for what I knew would be a profoundly stressful season of life and ordered the book. In the past, my strategy for dealing with this particular type of stress is to make extremely ambitious goals and then fail miserably. This time, I just wanted to limit any undue mental burden and not gain weight. That’s it. I have been following No S for the last month or so.

I realized pretty quickly that I was going to have to allow the fruit any time mod for two reasons: a) I am nursing a baby and b) psychology. I have had severe morning/all day sickness for the duration of all my pregnancies. Once I started tuning in to my body and attempted to only eat three meals a day I realized that I was starting to panic after about 2 hours with no food. Two hours is nothing, right? But after five pregnancies in ten years, my brain associates hunger with danger. During pregnancy, hunger=hours of vomiting. I have found that when the panic starts to set in, all it takes is telling myself (sometimes out loud), “If you are hungry, you can eat fruit.” Sometimes I actually eat fruit, but lately I haven’t needed it. Something about recognizing and confronting the panic has been very healing.

Another really interesting element of this lifestyle has been rediscovering food that I actually enjoy. I have been dieting or restricting food in one way or another since I was a young teen. Even when I was not actively dieting, there were still foods that I never ate just because they became taboo. Like peanut butter and jelly. Why? I don’t know. I can’t tell you how transformative it has been to eat, enjoy, and then be done until the next meal. The jury is still out on whether I like my coffee black or with cream. I have been drinking it black for so many years because...calories. But maybe I like half and half? I honestly don't know.

As someone who has taught theology for years, I really appreciated the focus on virtue in the No S book. There is nothing explicitly religious, but the tenets of moral theology are all there and boy, am I embarrassed to realize how disordered my interior life is compared to what I teach my students! In theology, we talk about freedom as being the ability to do, not whatever you want, but what you ought. What I am finding with No S is that kind of freedom. I ought to feed myself well, to eat in a communal setting with my family (not covertly), to give thanks for the food I eat, and so on but when I was chained to restricting or dieting, I couldn’t do any of that. "Putting a fence around the law" is truly liberating.

I have lost probably 2-3 lbs over the last month taking in to account normal fluctuation. Not much, but the goal was not to gain. Now that the end of the stress is in sight, I am committing to 21 days of No S. I will continue the fruit any time mod as needed. I am also going to keep alcohol for S days only.

Day 1

B. Baked oatmeal, small apple
L. scrambled eggs, English muffin, small bowl of soup
D. Chicken pasta and green beans

Fruit any time: 2 bananas, 4 dates

In my month dry run, I got in the habit of virtual plating a little too often. Today I made sure to put my food on a plate (even made sure the soup bowl fit on my lunch plate) and sat down for every meal. It was probably too much food but it was an intensely stressful day and I am happy that I stuck with the plan.

Today is my son's birthday. He is young enough to care if I participate in the festivities, but I don't want to go full S. So my plan is 3 meals and a little bit of birthday cake this evening.
Breakfast- 2 almond flour muffins

Well done for sticking with the plan under stress. I think that putting out all your food at once on one plate and sitting down to eat is a good habit to get into. I have found it useful.

Well yesterday didn't go quite as planned, but I did stick with 3 meals and only a little funny business. I probably should have just made it an S day since it was a special occasion but I don't regret building in some moderation. Today:
Breakfast: Two almond muffins + banana
Lunch: Bowl of chicken and veggie soup + slice of bread
Dinner: TBD

Yesterday went well. Nothing eventful although I did eat past the point of fullness at dinner. Honestly, I could have skipped dinner altogether.

Today:
Breakfast: 2 almond muffins + 1 banana
Lunch: Caesar salad, lasagna, and a piece of garlic bread (This was a huge meal. I haven't quite figured out how much I need to get from one meal to the next).
Dinner: TBD

I got some difficult news yesterday which normally would have sent me into a tailspin. I actually decided to give in an eat something sweet but I realized pretty quickly that it wasn't going to help anything. A few months ago, eating one thing would have led to another and another. Instead, I threw a piece of Ghiradelli chocolate in the trash because I just...didn't want it. So yesterday was a red day, but it still feels like a victory because I can feel my brain getting rewired.

Today:
Breakfast: 2 pieces of whole grain toast, 2 T peanut butter, 1 small apple
Lunch: Bowl of soup, 1 piece of whole grain bread
Dinner: Tortellini with sauce, Caesar salad

S Day!

I followed the three meal pattern until this evening just because it felt right. After dinner, I had some popcorn and a little dark chocolate and that felt plenty indulgent. Oh and some wine. :)

Yesterday was another S day. Again, I was surprised by the ease of enjoying sweets and snacks without going overboard. Back to Ns today. I have hoping to a solid week of green.

Whoops! I missed a few days in the busyness of life. Things have mostly been going well with a few slip ups. I decided to extend this out to a 6 month challenge. My daughter will be about a year old 6 months from now and my general goal is to be back to my prepreg weight by then, or at least close. Unfortunately, breastfeeding is not my friend when it comes to weight loss. I always LOL when people say that weight just falls off when you are nursing a baby. My body is convinced I am in the midst of a famine and holds on to every blessed calorie.

Today was an S day (birthday). Back to N days tomorrow!

Hi Carolyn!

Welcome to No S!

Sounds like you are doing well! I also started doing No S while I was nursing. Wow! It was hard! Breastfeeding made me insanely hungry all the time! I think your fruit mod is a great idea. I also remember reading we are particularly susceptible to sugar and fat cravings while hungry and nursing because that is a quick source of calories so keeping yourself from getting too hungry with your fruit snacking sounds good too. Anyway, just wanted to pop in and say Hi and empathize with the breastfeeding and weight. My weight did NOT just fall off while breastfeeding. Good luck!

Dinner: TBD

Yesterday:
B. 2 slices of Dave's killer bread, 2 T PB, banana
L. Tuna fish, flax chips, pear
D. Fish, rice, salad, sourdough bread, half banana

Today: S day!
I am planning to stick with three meals with a sweet or two a day this weekend. It felt really comfortable last weekend. I had sourdough toast with butter, a pear, and a little dark chocolate for breakfast today. Yum.

I am going to start tracking exercise here too. Yesterday, I walked about 2.5 miles. Today I have an hour of PT which, trust me!, is a workout. I am hoping to get in a walk too though.

Well Saturday I ended up walking a cumulative 7 miles with the family, plus an hour of intense physical therapy. I was more than happy to rest on Sunday! My S days felt really moderate. I did end up eating between meals but nothing crazy. I ate some sweets because I could, but the only thing I actually enjoyed was dark chocolate. Happy to be back to N days today. We have a lot of religious holidays this week so rather than go full S on those days, I am going to allow one S (probably a little dessert with my family in the evening).

Today was RED. The weekend didn't feel constrictive, but maybe I didn't give myself enough freedom. Whatever the case, I took a bite of something between meals, then another, and then went into full on "what the heck" mode. I am ending today at 7 pm and will start fresh tomorrow.

Green!

I forgot to include yesterday's exercise - 25 min of a strength workout program I have really been enjoying.

Today:
B. Two slices of Dave's killer bread, 2 T peanut butter, 1 banana
L. Spaghetti, green beans, an apple, and a little dark chocolate (another religious S day)
D. Chili

I am hoping to get in a good long walk this afternoon.

No time for a walk yesterday. I am planning to do my 25 minute workout this afternoon.

B. 2 slices Dave's killer bread + 2 T PB + banana
L. Chili + cornbread
D. Leftovers of some sort...maybe stir fry

My husband gave me an enormous, 32 ounce Yeti and I have really been enjoying hot tea all day long. I do 1 green chai tea bag per cup with a little milk and it is just perfect. I have always been an all-day-long tea drinker but I love not having to microwave a mug a gazillion times to keep it warm.

My weight really isn't budging which is disheartening. I know postpartum hormones + age are working against me, so I will keep trucking. Even if I don't lose another pound, the food freedom is so worth it to me.

I totally agree with this! No S is not for fast immediate results. At least not usually... but the mental space cleared up by not obsessing over food, and actually enjoying your food is so amazing and so worth it!

Boy! What a week! TGIF. I got in 20 minutes of strength + 1 mile walk yesterday.

B. Overnight oats with berries and pepitos. I love overnight oats but rarely remember to set them up!
L. Tuna fish sandwich + banana+ a little dark chocolate (After four days straight of getting up at 4 for work meetings, I really felt like throwing in the towel this morning. Instead I used a small plate for lunch and added a little chocolate as a concession. The cravings are gone and I think I can make it to bed time without snacking or other sweets.)
D. Will be tuna noodle casserole and veggies

I am planning for a 2.5 mile walk this evening to burn off some stress.

We had a quiet, refreshing weekend. Saturday was spent taking every blessed thing out of the garage, reorganizing, and putting it all back again. We moved into our house awhile ago and still hadn't gotten into all the boxes, so it felt good to get it done. Sunday, I got in a nice long hike with a friend. Beautiful weather! I enjoyed some sweet and snack through the weekend but nothing crazy. I weighed myself on a whim this morning and I hit a new low! I know my weight will bounce up again but it was nice to break through the number I have been sitting at for weeks. I track weight trends and I have lost about 6 lbs since June. It isn't much, but it does add up to about 2 lbs a month.

Today
B. Dave's Killer bread + PB+ blueberries
L. TBD
D. Homemade pizza, salad

Yesterday was solidly red and today was yellow. I am so completely flattened by exhaustion and I am sure that is contributing. Tomorrow I get to sleep in a bit and it will only be one day until the weekend. Here's hoping to a squeaky clean green before heading into my S days.

One thing I have noticed which surprised me is that on the weeks I do well with no snacking, I have a much easier time with my blood sugar. I carry three meals/no snacks into the weekend for that reason. I think I probably do a better job of balancing protein and healthy carbs at meals when I know I won't get a pick me up snack later.

Don't beat yourself up about red days. I think the most important thing about making this a success and lifelong habit is what you learn on the way.

Thank you for the encouragement! Today was much better. I built in a fourth meal knowing that my meal times were going to be odd. I am calling it a green since I planned for a bonus small meal and didn't just snack.

B. Bagel, cream cheese
L. Dave's killer bread, peanut butter, muffin
S. grapefruit + paleo bar
D. Halibut fish taco + veggies

Exercise - 25 min workout DVD + 25 min walk

I got a 25 minute workout this morning which is always my ideal.
B. Better Oats (new to me and I love them!) + banana

D. Beans + kielbasa

B. Raisin bun + blueberries
L. Beans + homemade mac n cheese + SmartPop

I didn't manage daily check ins here this week, but I have started using habitcal and like it a lot. I realized that this is the longest I have stuck with anything diet related by a long shot. I wouldn't say it has been easy, but it is easier than the alternative and I am grateful for that.

Oh absolutely! By diet, I guess I meant a fairly major change in the way I had been eating. But the reason I have been sticking to it is because it isn't a diet.

September was just so-so. More red days than I would like, but I am getting better about this way of eating. One of the biggest benefits is that I can just eat what I cook for my family without a second thought. No more carb counting or making something separate for myself. I love that. Here is to a new month!

I set up HabitCal for No S and exercise. To give myself a green for exercise, I need to get in a minimum of 20 minutes of movement. Very attainable. I am going to report here on Friday how my week went rather than posting all my meals.

HabitCal is realllyyy motivating. It is hard to lie to yourself when you have to pick a color! I am experimenting with different forms of exercise to see what I enjoy. In the past, I have pushed my body far too hard. This week was walking, yoga, and strength training.

We will be traveling this week for the first time in a year and a half. As a mom of a lot of little kids, I think traveling will actually make No S a little easier. Food prep is my downfall! :)

We are home! Traveling with little kids through multiple time zones is not for the faint of heart, but it was such a joy to see family after 2 years apart (thanks, COVID). I am grateful that we had the opportunity. I didn't use habitcal last week but was able to get exercise in pretty consistently. I enjoyed the freedom to follow the spirit, but not the letter of the law as we traveled. For me, that means only eating with others as a communal event. I had sweets on a few occasions but that was just part of the joy of being with our family again. All in all, it was a wonderful week and I am thankful that the No S lifestyle gave me the freedom to not stress about food and just enjoy. Oh and I lost two lbs.

Not a bad week all things considered. I gave myself the fruit any time mod when I started this five months ago because I am nursing a baby. I think it might be time for me to give that up because a) My 7 month old started solids so I am not her only food source and b) I find myself eating fruit between meals just for the sake of eating - not because I am hungry. I would like to build in a 4th meal/snack for days I really need it, but I have a hard time with that kind of ambiguity. I don't know if that makes sense. I am going to try 3 meals a day, vanilla No S next week and see how it goes.

Congrats on the weight loss! I know what you mean about food between meals getting tricky. I know I have to be super careful when I allow myself any kind of eating between meals too. It's weird how quickly you just start eating just because, and not because you are hungry.

Good luck with the Vanilla No S this week!

OOF. What a week! Sick kids, tons of job stress, lots of very early mornings, and a flare up of an old joint injury. Oh and the scale showed +3 lbs at the end of the week which I know is totally normal fluctuation, but still. I struggled a lot with blood sugar this week in a way I haven't since I started No S. I think it probably had to do with sleep deprivation. I am going to try adding in a small snack on days I have to be up at 4 for work this week and see if that helps. When I tried waiting on breakfast until my nonwork time, I got pretty queasy, but if I eat breakfast at 4 then it is 8 hours until lunch.

On the plus side, I got in a nice 2.5 mile walk today with minimal knee pain. I am also truly amazed at how much my sugar cravings have subsided since I started this way of life. I used to eat chocolate every single day and today I don't want it even though I can have it. It's nice.

So far, so good. All green days this week and I made some tweaks to address the blood sugar issues I was dealing with last week. Basically, I have to accept that I need a built in, fourth meal on days that I am up at 4 for work. If I eat at 6, small snack at 11, lunch at 1ish, and dinner at around 6, my blood sugar stays stable. The twenty minutes of exercise feels like a really low bar for me, but I also spent many years exercising in excess. No S has really helped me to treat my body with more respect and I am much more inclined to be gentle with myself these days. Twenty minutes of anything - yoga, walking, resistance, you name it - checks the box and if I feel like doing more I do, and if I don't, I don't! Life with a house full of young kids is pretty active already. Half the time, I walk for 40 minutes just to get some peace and quiet.

May I ask how the blood sugar issue manifests for you? I have taken over 300 readings since the middle of July and honestly can't tell the difference nearly at all. The only time I felt something significant was a time it dropped into the mid 70's. But it doesn't do that much. Do you think yours might? Some people on another site I'm on actually aim to try to get their bg into the 70's for most of the day! I guess their bodies have tapped into fat stores because they say everything hums along. It sounds like too much work to me.

You're finding your way!

Of course! Low blood sugar feels like cold sweats, jitteriness, and sometimes nausea for me. I don't usually get hungry in advance. I have thought about monitoring blood sugar for a period just out of curiosity. I don't have any risk factors for diabetes, but I think multiple borderline hyperemesis pregnancies did a number on my body's ability to regulate blood sugar.

This week was okay. I gave myself an S day due to a stomach bug since I definitely couldn't manage three meals. Toast and tea for the day and all better. In retrospect, I think it may have been food poisoning. :? One fail, but so it goes. Onward and upward. I never thought I'd say this. Ever. But I think I might be losing my sweet tooth. When I started this journey, I had chocolate daily and now I don't even want it on S days. Snacking is still a temptation, but sweets -rarely. Interesting.

I am still here and still plugging along...I just dropped the ball on habitcal for the last two weeks. I think I have been more or less true to my N days. After 4 S days in a row (happy Thanksgiving!), I am ready to get back to it. For December, I am going to make Saturday a No S day to account for religious holidays (S days) during the week. I have weighed myself on a few days over the last week and feel confident that I am down another pound. Sllllooowwww and steady!

So much red this week, but it really represents me taking the lifestyle more seriously. I had become pretty good at overlooking little lapses and calling them green days but after listening to one of Reinhard's podcasts, I realized that white lies on habitcal weren't doing me any favors. Moving forward, I want to quantify red days here. All three of the red days this week were a bit of this and a bite of that in between meals. I was so close to green yesterday, and then took a few bits of rice pilaf at 9 pm. I continue to be amazed by the detachment that No S has given me from sweets. I went to a work party last night with a huge dessert spread and wasn't even a little bit tempted.

I am still here and still chugging along. I have been at this for 7 months with a very modest 10 lb weight loss. I think I have formed the habit enough to change things up a bit and will be trying intermittent fasting this month to see if I can break through my current plateau. I plan to eat from 11-7, two meals and a snack.

Well, IF was a total bust. It threw gasoline on old binge eating habits that were largely manageable with No S. So, that is a nope! I am back to No S with the addition of calorie tracking. I am actually tracking more for accountability in the type of food I am eating. I found that I was starting to eat whatever I want, as long as it was in three meals, a little too often.

That happened to me, too, Carolyn, with IF I experimented with for various reasons after several years of maintenance on Vanilla. It was a series of intermittent tailspins of relapse! A lot of it was believing the IF community of "eating whatever I want." Well, what I wanted was a lot of ultimately UNsatiating food. I've bumped and skidded a lot in the interim though I've never felt completely lost. Over the years since then, geesh about six years now, the quality of what I eat during my window has become central, but it's been organic. It isn't as if I can't eat other foods; it's just recognizing that they don't please the way I would like and are not worth wasting the stomach space on. I'm glad for you you are catching it pretty fast.

Thanks, Oolala! Calorie counting has really helped a lot - not so much for the calories, but to make sure my meals are healthy and balanced. After a few weeks back on vanilla no S, the binge eating temptations subsided significantly.

I've been gone for almost a year and am glad to see the forums are still alive! I reached my goal weight over the summer with No S and back-checking calories (logging calories at the end of the day to see if I was staying within a reasonable weight loss range). I am now 16 weeks pregnant and starting up No S again with some modifications. The first trimester was ROUGH, and I ate whatever I needed to manage nausea. Life has gotten a little easier, and I am eager to get back into the swing of 3 meals (+1-2 snacks as a mod).

I gained a lot in the first trimester (totally typical for me with all day sickness) but only gained 2.5 pounds in the last 4 weeks.

If you are pregnant definitely listen to your body's need for food.

I read something interesting that definitely reflected my own experience. I am not diabetic nor at any risk for diabetes but have always struggled with blood sugar swings. Apparently, some folks experience a blood sugar crash following caffeine consumption even when the coffee is black and unsweetened. When I am not pregnant, I drink a lot of black coffee. I have tried IF a few times, but always fail because I feel shaky and awful in the morning. I don't plan on going down the IF road again, but the research did put the pieces together for me.

I fell off the rails a bit due to illness but "begin again" seems to be the best way to make No S a lifestyle. Today is already red, but I am not waiting until tomorrow to start fresh.

1/26- Green

I had my 20 week anatomy scan yesterday and baby is looking great. Despite sticking with No S, calorie counting, exercising, and morning sickness, I have already packed on 20 lbs this pregnancy. It is discouraging, especially since I do not drop weight quickly postpartum, but I am eating well and enjoying the freedom of moderation.
