Richard's Special Updates

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

Thanks for writing to me!
Thanks for calling me a hunk, but I'm only in 4th grade! When I'm older, I hope that I will look like Reinhard, but without the glasses! :P

Okay, Richard, I will ammend that to "future hunk" or "hunk in training". I am sure your potential hunkiness is already noticeable to those 4th grade chicks. But, remember, you're NEVER leaving your mother! (That's for you Deb)

Thanks Reinhard for writing to me, and thanks Peetie.
Mom's laughing like crazy now! I wonder how she'll handle college?!
I don't have any updates, except that all my baby fat is going away and my stomach looks very slim.
I really wanted a raspberry turnover, which I saw at the supermarket, but that will have to wait until the weekend.

Hi Reinhard and everyone else!
Thanks for asking how I was everyone.
I'm almost over the cold right now.
Since I was sick, Mom let me buy a three musketeers bar.
I'll be sure to write again soon.

Hey Richard,
Sounds like you're doing great. Glad you're feeling better and good luck getting into the 21 club! So far I haven't made it through those golden doors, but if you get there first, and you probably will, save me a seat!

Hi Richard,

I'm so glad you have joined us here, and even more glad that you have begun doing No-S. I have often thought that if I could have done this when I was younger, it would have saved me a lot of trouble through the years. So even if this is hard sometimes, stick with it. It will be worth it in the long run.

Dear Jan,
Thanks for writing to me! :D
Just to tell you, I have been on NoS for a year and I have seen a big change in me, but this is the first time I'm trying to do 21 days straight.
Have a good day!

Richard,
I'm with Jan. I wish I had skipped, in my case, literally DECADES of crazy diets followed by the inevitable binges and done this in the first place! I know that at one time it was just females who did this stuff, but it has spread into the male community as well.

Glad you are being so sensible! Thanks for encouraging me about the 21 day club!

Hey everybody :)
Mom's is shoveling our driveway of snow for about 10 minutes.
It's just like her own mini-shovelglove!
I think if she does it every week or two, she'll get good arm and abdominal muscles.
I'm about to go to school for a before school activity. It is where we play lots of sports like basketball, soccer, and have lots of fun 8)

I might right back this afternoon to tell you if I hade a good "urban ranger" (running around), and if I hade a good S day

Peace,
Richard

Hey Nossers.
It's me Richard, back from school.
Today was a good N day. I didn't have breakfast though.
I had gym and befores, and we played basketball for both the activities.

For lunch, I had a granny apple and oatmeal (not that much of a lunch).
I went outside and played boxball for recess.
I was using my arm and leg muscles lots today.

Everyday, I also walk home from school (URBAN RANGER HERE I COME!)
I walk about 1/4 of a mile, and sometimes 1/3 of a mile each day!

Tonight, I had pasta with meat and spinach. yumm............

I would say today was......
SUCCESS!!!!
Okay, so 19 days to go.
I'll write tomorrow

Peace,
Richard

Hey Richard,

Sounds like you're getting quite a bit of activity...that's very good! I know lots of kids who go from school to tv to computer, and it shows in their bodies. You're doing something good for yourself!

Please eat a good breakfast tomorrow, okay? You need the fuel! Your lunch of oatmeal and apple didn't sound that bad...you can't go wrong with a whole grain and a fresh fruit!

You should post more often!

How do I get my muscles working? Not being into sports (too clumsy!), I have found a variety of activities. I like to do exercises with dumbbells, and I do different kinds of crunches for abs. When it's not winter here in Minnesota, I wear a step-counter and try to get 10,000 steps each day (about 5 miles). I also like to do Leslie Sansone in-home walking dvd's, and I have a gazelle which I use while watching dvd's of old TV shows. Right now I am working my way through the first season of "My Favorite Martian." I do tai chi in some form almost every day.

So, what do you think? How's that for a middle-aged mom??? :D

I might try Ice hockey this year now that I'm old enough, Navin
You must play it a lot since it's mostly very cold down in Kentucky

Peace,
Richard

P.S. Today I had a good breakfast: chocolate soymilk, and homeade fresh baked granola. Yumm.........

Hey, Richie, what's with you and Jan???? I thought you were MY little sweetie. Okay....I'll share. But begrudgingly!!!!!

You sound like you're doing great and a real inspiration for your mom.

I love oatmeal for just about any meal. I put raisins and walnuts and cinamon in it and pour a little vanilla almond milk over it while pretending it's a huge oatmeal cookie.

Keep up the good work.

Love,
Peetie

Oh well, it's almost Christmas.

My friend Rosemary from the church just delivered a plate of her absolutely incredible English toffee squares, and some other chocolate bars. Oh man, I love toffee! It's calling my name, it's begging and it's pleading...come and eat us!!!

Two more no-s days and then...IT'S TOFFEE FOR ME!!!

Well, I guess I'll have to share it with the kids.

Anyway, hope you and your Mom have wonderful holiday S-Days. :D

Hi Jammin Jan!
Mom unit Deb here...
Richard is asleep now and I'm soon following...
Passover is in April, so you can wish us that then! LOL..
Did you know that The Last Supper, was infact, a Passover Seder?

We welcome all Holidays here in our little home :)
But traditionally my family is of Jewish descent, so Hannukah is the main deal for us this week.. Interestingly enough, Christmas and Hannukah fall on the same day this year... I can't remember that happening for some time... We will be consuming loads of potato latkes with sour cream and apple sauce!
Whoa, I will expect to gain a few that day! But it's pretty worth it..
Who knows.. Maybe I will maintain... Hope so...

Hope you get all the nice pieces of toffee before the kids get to it! LOL..
And enjoy the longest night of the year tonight!
PS... Thanks for writing to sweetie Richie! I know he cares about that!
Peace and Love,
8) Deb

Apologies, Mom & Son...what I meant to type was Hannukah and not Passover. It was getting late in the evening for me, so that's my excuse.

Yes, the Last Supper was a Passover seder. The Gospels are very clear about that.

It was funny growing up Catholic in Los Angeles back in the 50's. I was immersed in a very closely-knit Irish Catholic community, but that was set next to a sizeable Jewish community. So in December, both Christmas and Hannukah were both very visible. And after I left Catholic elementary school, I went to a mostly-Jewish public junior high. The mix of customs and holidays continued and it was a lot of fun. We used to eat in the Jewish restaurants and I really came to love that cooking! So, enjoy your latkes and sour cream and applesauce...eat some for me, please!!!

That is great Richard. When you grow up and leave home (not that you are going to though!) ..heh... you need to keep going to the dentist. I am 25 and I hadn't been since I got married and movied out (4.5 years). I thought everything was good. I brushed and flossed, but those sweets can really do damage. Im all fixed now and won't let it happen again

I'm writing here for Richie to keep track..
Sunday: Day 2 Success :)
Then, as I posted on my thread, yesterday I was sick so the rules kinda went out the window and when my Mom offered to take Richie to pizza so I could have more time to just nap, I allowed them to have soda with it..
I wasn't thinking straight, because Richie wasn't sick, but oh well.. it happened, and actually he had a brownie too I think? Hmm not sure on that..
Anyways,,,,,
We're starting day three today.
I'll have Richie report back tomorrow

Deb here again for Richie, who is off buying us both a nice candy bar from the local drugstore :D
This week we were really good with the rules, so he congratulated me and said "Good job with the S's this week Mom" LOL..
So cute..
I realised we have been doing a pretty decent job with some minor infractions, for about a month now, so I seized the moment and took our measurements again.

Richie lost nearly a whole inch off his waist, just from curbing the sweets and snacks this month.. (he normally isn't a seconds S'ser like me!)

He actually did a little jumping up and down with his hands in the air going
"Yay!!!" victory dance! :D
I'm really happy we are getting back to a stricter approach..
I'm not at all surprised by the fact that he lost weight.. Not even with exercise.. Because the problem was just over S'sing, and we both realise that this is no special magic trick.
