Step by Step

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

Step by Step

Post by LoriLifts » Sat Nov 14, 2009 11:48 pm

I'm back with a plan!

I find that I do best when I combine No S with another goal. I lost about 10 lbs with a No S / 10,000 steps a day combo.

Whenever I focus only on diet, I seem to detour. I've been spending the last couple of weeks searching for a new fitnesss goal.

I've found one!

I love completing marathons. The Rock & Roll marathon series have a set of medals that can be obtained if you complete a certain amount of races in a designated amount of time.

Being an extreme type of gal, I don't want just 1 medal, I want all of them!

So that's the new goal. It will take about 50 weeks to complete all the races. And 50 weeks will plenty of time to lose the last 20 lbs.

As I focus on a race goal, I'll add a No S goal.

My first race goal is the Las Vegas marathon on December 6. My first No S goal is No Snacks until noon during N days until December 6.

When I cross the finish line on December 6, I'll add a new race and No S goal.

Let the fun begin!

Time to go to bed, I have a 20 mile training run tomorrow. Thank God it's also an S day!

It's Sunday night, although it was darn cold, I completed my 20 mile run. The best part about long training runs is when it's over. I end the run at my gym, so I can sit in the steam room for awhile. After that, my husband and I go out for dinner.

I'm looking forward to a successful N day tomorrow.

WIDRT (What I Did Right Today)

No Snacks before noon. I would have thought this would be an easy rule, however, I developed a pesky habit of having "alittle something" with my 10am cappucino. Not today!

I'm working out of town, as soon as I checked in to my hotel, I hit the treadmill for my designated workout.

I'm going to focus on WIDRT. I'll document any failures (I think I'll call them detours) on my habitcal.

Me again. Third time tonight!

This is what happens when I'm out of town. I get sick of watching tv ( Dancing With The Stars) and get back on my laptop.

Instead of surfing the net, I thought I'd do something constructive.

Here is my long term plan of combining races with No S...

- Now until Las Vegas Marathon (Dec 6) No snacks until noon.
- Dec 7 until Arizona marathon (Jan 17) No snacks until 6pm
- Jan 18 until New Orleans marathon ( Feb 27) No snacks after 8pm
- March 1 until Dallas half marathon (March 14) No snacks
- March 15 until San Diego marathon (June 6) 1 sweet with dinner
- June 7 until Seattle marathon (June 26) No sweets
- June 27 until Chicago half marathon ( Aug 1) Vanilla No S
My last race of 2010 will be a half marathon in San Jose on Oct 1. I'll be crossing the finish line as a No Ser! :)

It will take me almost a year to complete my goals. If I get impatient, I need to remember how long it took me to complete a marathon. I bought a book on how to run a marathon when I was 30 years old. I completed my first one at 40 years old. I kept that book around for 10 years before I commited to training.

The good news is when I decide to do something, I really go for it. I'm 52 years old and have completed 26 marathons. It's time to put the same level of commitment to being a No Ser. I joined this website almost 2 years ago. At least I didn't let 10 years go by!

Help! I'm in a Thanksgiving vortex!

Although I've been breaking the S rules left and right, the good news is that I've stuck to my training plan. Since my last post, I snuck in a 15 mile training run, with some shorter distances sprinkled in.

I also stepped on the scale...138.6 lbs. Not great but holy cow, it could have been much worse! My goal of losing 20 lbs will pretty much be on target.

I climb aboard the wagon on Monday, sticking to my no snacks until noon rule. I also need to start shovel gloving again.

Next weekend I fly to Las Vegas to do the first in my series of marathons. My hope is that my finishers photos look better and better as the year progresses!

Las Vegas marathon...done!

Although it took me 6 hours and 40 minutes to cover 26.2 miles, the time passed quickly. The first part of the course was on the Strip, we ran past the hotels and casinos. At mile 3 there was a "run in" wedding chapel. 45 couples got married, then continued the race. There were also lots of runners in Elvis costumes and bands playing music.

I had an epiphany around mile 16. Well, maybe not an epiphany, more like a realization.

And here it is..

I'm so happy when I finish marathons, despite the fact that my legs ache and my feet are sore. I am proud that I stick with my training schedule and complete my goal. When I decide on a race, I commit 100% to finish, even when it gets uncomfortable.

I need to feel that sense of commitment to No S. The only way this will happen for me is to jump in with both feet and do vanilla S. Baby steps won't give me the sense of accomplishment I'm seeking.

My next marathon is January 17 in Phoenix. I'm going to stick to my training plan and Vanilla S. Neither one will be easy but the end results will be worth it.

I can't believe it's Christmas week! And only 2 weeks until 2010!

I'm really happy that I haven't completely unraveled during the holiday season. I've sprinkled in some vanilla S days during the week and have stuck to my exercise schedule.

I weighed myself a couple days ago...138.4 lbs. My next marathon is in Phoenix, on January 17. The plan will be to cross the finish line at 135 lbs. That's do-able, especially if I add more Vanilla S days.

My only New Years resolutions will be to fill out my HabitCal all year. I've been sporatic at best, it would be interesting to have a year's worth of data. I'm also going to be a more active member on this site. I enjoy reading everyone's comments and blogs. I need to participate too.
