Herbsgirl's check in

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

It's been a while since I've posted on your thread; it's been hard to make time to post. Congratulations on making your goal! I'm glad you're continuing to share here with your regular updates and blog posts.

I'm curious about how you personally feel about the weight loss at this point in time, with having maintained at or below goal for two months now. I realize you re-evaluate bite counts on a regular basis, but I wondered about how you're *feeling* about the loss and maintenance. Are you happy with where you're at still? How do you feel when you're still within your allowable range but on the middle or upper end of it? Are you happy with those numbers still or do you have negative feelings about it? Since you're below your original goal, are you tempted to try to lose more? I'm curious as to how you're processing this internally because I know from past experience that I've been tempted to try to drop more if I met or surpassed my goal and wondered if you felt similarly. Or maybe you feel like you should weigh a bit more than you have been. In any case, I hope you've got a better attitude than I had previously. Also, your commitment is inspiring. :)

Hi! Thanks for stopping by and commenting on my thread! :D

At first I did want to lower my "goal weight" and I did lower it twice. Once to around 148 and once to 147. Scince I work with a 5 pound Maintenance Range I focus more on the range, and less on the goal so to speak! This keeps me from spazzing out too much when it goes up or down a bit. No big deal as long as I am in my goal Range.

Yes I kinda did want to keep getting skinnier, but I have settled down a bit.

I just feel like I want to be IN a Maintenance Range That is Reasonable for me to be able to Maintain and Stay there for the Long term

Could I get to 130? Sure I could! Do I have the desire and motivation and gumption to be able to stay there long term? No, I don't right now!

I would rather stay more reasonable, closer to 144-147-less than 150 range and be able to KEEP IT OFF! :D I feel like that 23.1-23.3 or so is a very healthy weight for me, Much healthier than the Obese BMI I started out with!

I am happy with my weight loss, I am glad I did it, but it is a daily Commitment day in and day out!

Some people say Maintenance is harder than Weight Loss. Judith Beck says she has not found this to be so. It is basicly the same as Weight loss she says.

She says it gets harder for some days and weeks and then it gets easier, and then it repeats, over and over. We just have to work through those times, because in the long run, she says it does get easier over time.

Reinhard's habit principle comes in here. The more we build up those N and S day habits, the more ingrained it becomes! :D

Hi! Thanks for stopping by my thread! Thats great you are trying Bite Counting! I have found it to be a way of losing wieght and Maintining my wieght as a Way of LIfe, Lifestyle change...

Its easy to do, doesnt take alot of time and I can eat pretty much anything I want

As far as the liquids you can count a gulp/swallow as one bite

OR

you can set a bite count to each 8 oz beverage. Calorie Rich beverages would be more towards 10 bites/8-12 oz and Low Cal beverages would be more towards 5 bites/8-12 oz beverage just to give you an idea~

OR

You can choose not to count beverages at all if you drink the same thing every day (Like coffee with creamer in it every morning)

The most important thing is to stay CONSISTENT every day with whatever you do, that is what gets you results in the long term ;)

My tips would be to

-Not to decrease bites too fast...take it slow and steady

-Stickk.com is what I use to make my bite commitments for each week. keeps me on track

-Helps alot to eat the bites slowly (see my blog post on eating slowly here in case you havent read it before

http://countyourbites.blogspot.com/2013 ... h-big.html

- Plan for more bites on the weekend/OR a couple meals/ times a week...you can still stay on track, but you can have more bites of what you want... Just like S days with the NO S diet. THis will help keep you from feeling deprived and yet you can still stay on track!

Feel free to ask any questions you want!

So true.
To build and maintain eating habits that will lead to weight-loss results,
we need to be Consistently Aware of all of our food behaviors.

Bright Angel thanks for stopping by and commenting! :D

Today marks 2 months in weight Maintenance. That seems like a drop in the bucket compared to people who have been Maintaining for 5-10 years or more, Like Bright Angel ;D

You all wont believe it... I am thinking about TRYING no sweets(candy cookies desserts and p butter) next week Monday through Friday. I have been feeling down mentally and I wonder if its all the sugary bites I have been having.

So I want to try it for my N days next week and see if I have an improvement in mood!

I wrote about it in my new blog post

Thankyou for all your very helpful tips much appreciated.I,ve decided to aim for 100 bites, and gradually decrease from there,i know that,s a lot of food but i,m a 255 lb male and that would be a lot less than i,d normally eat.I,d probably eat 140 to 160 bites on average sometimes more,so it,s a lot less food.I.ve decided to just count food not tea and coffee and see how it goes.
Of course i can adjust this if i need to as i go along.Once again herbsgirl thankyou and congratulations on your weight loss and maintenance.

Thanks Automated! I started using my 10,000 LUX lightbox and I felt a boost of energy and mood! I also suspect I am severely deficient in Vitamin D3. I ordered some and its supposed to come today.

Besides the bite counting I think the slow eating is one of the most important componets of being satisfied, losing weight, and keeping it off! You are close to where I was when I started I was eating 180- 200 bites a day when/before I started. 100 bites should get you losing!

As for me, I purchased a Pear, 2 bananas, and Advocado, an Orange, some Organic Spring Mix and Lean Cuisine Salad Topper for some of my N day meals next week scince i will not be eating candy cookies and desserts on my N days!

Today is my 1st day of this weeks N days with NO candy, desserts or sweets. I told myself I can have jelly on bread ect, just not Sweet sugary candy stuff.

I am excited I found some more information from the 1970's on Bite Counting. They did Clinical Studie(s) on it and I even ordered a book that has 10 pages or so in it. They called it The Mouthful Diet.

Delayed eating

Post by palmas » Wed Apr 23, 2014 7:03 pm

Hi herbsgirl sometimes my schedule is crazy up at 5am,home at 10pm.I,ve noticed days like this it,s better if i delay my first meal to 10 am or so,because if i have early breakfast it,s a long time between meals and i get really hungry. When i delay breakfast it seems easier to eat less, and less time between meals.I shall try and make this my regular schedule.

I received my book today that tells about The Mouthful Diet It is almost the same principle that I do and Dr. Black used in his practice. In fact that's probably where he got the information about bite counting from a man who did a research study about The Mouthful Diet on actual Study Participants, S. Fowler.... I am thinking of doing a short review of the book as a blog post. There is also the Abstract of the study I want to buy and download sometime.

It goes into more detail about how to adjust the bites from one week to the next, and gives charts and examples ect.....

Hey, I've been thinking about your mod of no candy, desserts, or sweets on N Days. Did you see an improvement in your mood? Is it a mod you think you'll keep?

Diligence- I tried it last week and didnt notice a huge difference, but perhaps possibly a subtle difference in less heart palpitations? This week I allowed myself sweets up to 1/3 of my bites and I am not hardly eating any! So maybe less sweets will just stick with my automaticly? I just dont feel very good in my body when eating sugary stuff or something.

Hi HerbGirl,
I read your recent blog, and think that your choice to allow sweets,
but just cap the number is a very wise one.
You are doing Great in Maintenance, and I enjoy watching your efforts.

I started Reuteri Probiotics 3x day and high dose Omega 3, and all of a sudden my wieght is dropping even though my bite number is still the same!

I have read that Probiotics and Omega 3 both boost the metabolism or something. Somehow the probiotics help the digestive system be more effecient, and the Omega 3 helps the metabolism to speed up.

I know you're familiar with that 5-bite diet Theory about consistent volume = little hunger.
In the past, have you experimented with making all meals the same size volume?
It looks like your choice is to vary the volume of the food in your meals, small breakfast, mid-size lunch, larger dinner.
I'm wondering if you've noted any personal hunger difference
between having all the same size meals, and having a variety of meal sizes?
Have you noticed more, the same, or less hunger when comparing these eating styles?
Perhaps the stomach will adapt and expect a variety of meal volumes, when they happen consistently at different times?
I'm curious about your personal experience with this.

Bright Angel, Its hard to say exactly!

I do notice after my Capital S days or days when I eat unlimited food, I am definalty hungrier and think about food more almost after I get back to counting bites, but then my hunger or desire to eat goes away pretty quick after getting back on track within a day or two maybe?? And it is harder to eat small amounts again after eating larger amounts. But the free days/Capital S days help keep me on track and keep me on plan for the long term....

I guess the different amount at meals has worked for me, I just like to have a bigger supper because thats my family meal and when I usually cook stuff. i think having a tiny breakfast and a bigger supper probably does stretch my stomach out a bit more than if I did it all the same. I am all about whatever helps me stick to it long term

Hello all! I am still counting bites and still eating 3x a day alot of the time.

I posted in the 5 bite diet on facebook group, that I possibly have Hypothalamus Amenorrhea and PCOS with possible pre-diabetes and high insulin levels.

The doctor thinks the eating a tiny amount may have shocked my body too much, and also losing 70 lbs in 4 months. I am not 100% sure that it has alot to do with why I am not having a cycle.

The blood lab tests are pointing to more of a sugar/PCOS/Insulin Resistance problem.

So changing my lifestyle it is. Doctor said I cannot have ANY SUGAR. NONE. ZILCH. ZERO.

What have I been eating scince I started losing wieght in October 2013?

-Some Protien
-very little Fruits and Vegetables
-LOtS and LOTS of Sugar, and Starch foods

So now I have high LH and very low FSH, fasting blood glucose of 100. And my 1 hour post meal blood sugars are over 140 on a regular basis if I have too many carbs.

So I am still counting bites but I am eating Trim Healthy Mama style ( the plan is Low Glycemic Index, No sugar, high vegetable, high protien, moderate carbs) I dont have to count calories, but I have to watch the carbs etc sometimes...

So here is where The AWESOME No-S principle comes into play: 3 square meals a day I really like that!

Sorry for your difficulties but your attitude sounds good in that you are not feeling resentful or wanting to fight back or ignore the condition. Eating good food three times a day is still a gift. I'd wager you even enjoy your meals without the high proportion of sugar and starch. Here's to your being able to get you body in the balance you want soon.

Oh no, sorry to hear about your health issues. It is great to hear that you are continuing to focus on NoS.

I really don't know anything about bite counting, but it sounds like a lot of people focus on more nutrient-dense foods and less on the lighter foods (like veggies). I remember a diet where you could eat unlimited veggies, with some limitations around how the veggies were cooked, i.e., cheesy broccoli isn't unlimited! I wanted to throw that idea out there in case it might help fill you up on more veggies without using any (or many) bites, depending on how you modify the bite counting.

If I'm way off base, just ignore and keep up with your success, you're doing great, and I have no doubts that you'll find the right balance soon. Good luck!

Nice, are the veggies free bites? I may look into counting my bites, although not necessarily limiting them. I am trying to find ways to stop my mindless eating, and I think having to focus on counting bites could be a good way to help focus.

You definitely have a great attitude with your eating plan - let me know if these changes help with how you feel and with your test results. Good luck!

That sounds like a really reasonable plan. Congrats on being back in the maintenance range! It's funny how our weight can fluctuate day-to-day. I like your idea of having a maintenance range, and I also like the idea of focusing more on weight trends versus focusing on a single number. Keep up the good work!

Nice! Though I'd say your blood sugar readings are probably more important for your overall health these days. I think higher weight and lower consistent readings would be preferable than the opposite, if you couldn't have both.

Hi oolala!

How am I doing? I am below my goal weight today 146.2 lbs :)

I have been in Weight Maintenance for 15 + months now.

Have I been perfect? Absolutely not! I got off track before, during and after thanksgiving Chrustmas 2014 .

I maintained the majority of my weight loss for almost all of the time I have 15 months maintenance and I am currently below goal.

I have been trying different kinds of eating but some form of Intermittent Fasting seems to help my Insulin Resistance and / or Prediabetes/PCOS some if I do it in the right manner. Eating 3 spread out meals would only work for me probably if I do would modify it in some way for example do low 2 lower carb and I regular because of all my blood sugar and high insulin levels
Google the phrase Carb Concentration it is supposed to help people like me to only eat higher carb 1x per day and then more lower carb meals are optional.

I saw that you recently accepted my friend request on Facebook :)

I still update my YouTube channel and blog occasionally.

How are you doing?
