J Ellis's Check-In

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

J Ellis's Check-In

Post by J Ellis » Wed Oct 19, 2011 3:34 am

Despite being an on and off No S-er and a strong proponent of the plan for years, I've never participated much on this forum or had a Daily Check-in Thread. My work, teaching, and eating schedule is so erratic, No S has been a real challenge for me in the last few years. I'm working to solidify the habit despite the logistical challenges in doing so.

Fridays are an interesting challenge for me. No S is about discipline for me, not weight loss. I already skip many meals each week, and I frequently eat at odd times. Typical example today. I ate a large breakfast around 10:30am and nothing else until close about 7:30pm. Friday evenings we host a Bible study in our home and coffee and desserts are shared afterwards. I decided to call an exemption tonight, and I made myself a sandwich before indulging moderately in a few sweets.

I went ahead and counted Friday and Saturday as my S-days this past weekend. I only managed to eat once on Sunday, but it was one plate and no sweets, so....

Sunday - SUCCESS

Welcome and best wishes. Sounds like you are doing well and are a free thinker. Congrats on both. What does the PU stand for? Some form of exercise? Push ups? If that is the case, 500?????????????

I took S-days Friday, Saturday, and Sunday. I suppose one of those could/should be a fail, but we're having a revival this weekend at our church, and hosting gatherings at our house in the evenings calls for some concession. It would be different if I were doing No S for weight loss, health crisis, or this were an ongoing and regular situation.

Well done! Push-ups & I don't get along (bad wrists), but I you're doing so well with them!

Much success to you...

Mon - SUCCESS

Have you considered doing push-ups leaning against a wall, countertop or desk? You might also experiment using push-up handles. They make push-ups possible for those who have problems with dorsal flexion.

I hadn't thought of push-up handles...those would probably work well. I'm doing a lot of swimming lately (3 miles a week), but if I can't do that, I'll look into the handles. Thanks for the tip!

Joel,

Congratulations on the "PU!" As someone who bangs out an occasional few, I'm, if nothing else, in a position to be deeply impressed! My wife's uncle has been doing a similar number of pushups every day for many years, and the results speak for themselves.

I follow an IF protocol much of the time but have been giving some thought over the last few months as to how to integrate the No S model with an IF model. I know several other forum members already do this, but I am playing with it as well. I am considering doing some tracking and/or updating on this thread.

I do more IF over the weekends and certain days. I'll confine this thread to my No S and No S/IF days.

Wednesday: FAIL, blew it again in the evening. A friend baked us a cake in view of the current family crisis. It's just not my week for self restraint, apparently.

Thursday: Fail, but a technical rather than disastrous or particularly regrettable one. I made the decision to eat an extra bowl of Mini Wheats with a banana tonight.
