TobiasandLincolnmom's Journey

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

Yes, you can do it hang in there. Overall your habits are strong. You've just veered of track a little. Enjoy your dinner :) don't worry you will get back on track.

I'm going back to tracking my meals for now. No-S is very freeing, but the freedom to not track my three plates has me flying off the handle. I guess once I get back in the habit more I will be ready to just have my three plates and move on. But for now I need the accountability. I still get to eat whatever I want :)

B: bagel with peanut butter, black coffee
L: pizza pork chop with whole wheat orzo, grapes
D: herbes de Provence chicken with mashed potatoes

Workout: 1 hour elliptical

A green day! Yay!

B: bagel with peanut butter, black coffee
L: grilled cheese with tomato soup
D: egg salad sandwich, chili cheese Fritos

Activity: 1 hour weights and cardio (W1D1). I've started a new workout plan to change things up. I like body pump and yoga and will still do those on occasion, but I do enjoy mixing things up, and this plan really mixes up things each day!

I'm getting back in the zone. Super tired today from the lack of sugar. Shows how much I was eating this past week! I even got a headache today. Yikes. Just glad to be back on track! Finishing out the week strong and planning for two sane S days!

Oh my, Chili Cheese Fritos are so good! I haven't had them in years. I used to work with a gal who ate them all the time with lunch.

S DAY

B: two pancakes with syrup, black coffee
L: fried mushroom burger (soooo good) with fries, large soda
S: kettle corn at the corn maze
D: chips, salsa, flautas with beans and rice, one soda

Activity: We walked at the corn maze for four hours!! My feet are tired :}

I feel a bit bloated from my S day yesterday because I had a lot of salt and soda and not enough water. I wanted to make a mod of no soda, but it really does get me into diet head. I used soda responsibly yesterday. I had one at lunch and one at dinner. I had a bunch of kettle corn too, but we walked soooo much! So overall I'm feeling pretty good about this S day. Did I mention that fried mushroom burger was good? haha. I've never had one like that before. Usually it's a grilled portobello, but this was breaded and fried pieces of portobello. Totally not healthy but totally delicious!

No big plans today. I'm actually pretty tired. Got lots of sun yesterday. Hubby is running a 20-mile race so I will probably tend to his tired wounds afterwards! :}

Automated: I am doing JW's FitnessMap workout. I found it on Facebook. His name is James Wilson. It IS crazy!! But I am really enjoying it because I do something different every day. He has an at-home version or gym version.

B: bagel with peanut butter, black coffee
L: salami and cheese sandwich, veggie chips, pineapple
D: cilantro lime chicken tacos with drunken beans (yum)

Workout: Much-needed rest day

I'm in the groove. Dare I say that out loud??

D: pulled pork sandwich, one beer

I'm stuffed. But it was yummy :). Would like to stick with just three meals tomorrow. I will still have something sweet....just no snacking. My body can't handle it anymore! It's amazing how obvious excess is now!!

HI there, just saying hello, reading your thread, as always sooo impressive, keeping to the plan and eating well as well. This is good stuff. Thanks for helping to pull me back from my own personal abyss, I really appreciated it :) One key question if I may from an older comely non exercising woman - what is a burpee!!

Tessy: Burpees are horrible, don't recommend them :) you start in standing position, bend down and touch the floor with knees bent, jump back into push-up position, jump legs back to squatting position with hands on the floor, and then stand up and repeat 15 times or however many. Might wanna google it to get a better picture cuz I am horrible at explaining!!

Automated: I joined the gym....so they play in an awesome kid's club while I workout. Tobias is actually bummed when I come to pick him up :)

FAIL
B: English muffin with peanut butter, nutrigrain bar, black coffee
L: tomato soup, grilled cheese, cheetohs
D: tortilla soup and salad, apple pie a la mode

Activity: one hour weights and cardio (W2D4)

The apple pie was totally unplanned. I did well the rest of the day, though. I kind of got sloppy knowing tomorrow is an S day (Halloween). No excuse. But I do need to watch it tomorrow. Not too much candy. We have a mom's group Halloween party tomorrow.....I do plan to workout in the morning!

Weight

Post by tobiasmom » Thu Oct 31, 2013 12:15 pm

October 31: 194.2 (-2) TOTAL: -19.8

Down half a pound a week this month. Not too shabby considering I had EIGHT failures in October! Yikes! I think my working out has saved me, but I could make even more progress if I could get my eating a little more in compliance! The positive is that I still had quite a few successes....and No-S is just the best plan for me by far! I'm eating yummy stuff. I don't feel deprived. Almost down 20 pounds!! Actually, this time last year I was 230 (of course I had a 6-pound baby in my belly too)!! I use the starting weight of the day I got home from the hospital to be fair :)

Today is an S day for me. Gonna to try to be reasonable, but I do love me some Halloween candy :)

FAILURE.

So I didn't start the month out very strong. The Halloween candy and a sick baby got the best of me! I also haven't made it to the gym for a few days because I can't take a sick baby to the childcare :(

Going to attempt a few sane S days...stay away from the Halloween candy...and go for green next week! One failure for November is enough!!

good luck! I know you want to keep non-weekend S days to a minimum, but just like at work we can take a sick day if a child is ill....maybe we should also sometimes take an S day for a sick kid! My point is (of course)--don't beat yourself up too much. You have been doing awesome! You sound like a very energetic mom. :)

S DaY

I had an absolutely insane S day yesterday. What is wrong with me? I seriously ate candy and snacks and just plain junk like I would never see food again for the rest of my life. We sat at home all day, bored, with a sick baby...and watched tv. It sucks the life out of you...seriously!!

So needless to say, I feel cruddy this morning. Three meals today. I had a pumpkin muffin for breakfast. That's enough S for me today!

Gonna hit the gym this afternoon too. Linc's nose seems a lot better.

Ugh...I keep starting my months horribly. That's two fails already this month. But this isn't a race. I'm learning something each and every day. Sugar has been my problem this week. Halloween did me in!

I've really been struggling this week! The baby has been sick so I've only been to the gym once, and for some reason I just blow it after a few good weeks. Ugh....

I love the way I feel when I am sticking to my three meals, though. So today's a new day. Just gonna focus on today. I find that I can get so caught up in next week and next month and next year! I plan way too far ahead....and I forget about today :) the time is NOW.

Gonna start with a good breakfast....and I've got ribs planned for dinner!

Hang in there! I so relate to how tired and worn out you must be. You are in the 'tired' season of child-rearing. It's nice to know that it doesn't last forever.

When my kids were as young as yours, I was eating to get through the day. I used carbs and caffeine to boost my energy, and used fast food as mood-lifter. I hadn't found NoS back then, and felt like a rebel in that I refused to consider a diet like WW or similar. NoS is so very reasonable.... it works even for tired moms.

I do admire your workouts, but please be gentle with yourself when you can't do the intense stuff. Long-term, I think walking or other lower-intensity activities "stick" a little better. On the other hand, look at Walker Lori. Dude, she is bad-ass in-shape. Maybe that will be your legacy, too! Go, girl :)

Hey

Post by tobiasmom » Sun Nov 10, 2013 1:44 pm

It appears I have gotten little man's cold. Ugh! Totally congested with a bad sinus headache. Darn! I think I have found one of the keys to my anxiety, though! I only worked out once last week, and my anxiety was at an all-time high. It appears exercise....especially hardcore major sweaty exercise...keeps my anxiety waaaay down! Very interesting! Maybe I'm too tired afterwards to be anxious?? :)

So hopefully this cold won't be too bad and I can get back in the gym this week! I also have a goal this week to eat at home the whole week. I figured out how much we have been spending eating out.....holy moly! It's sickening! It really adds up!! We have plenty of food here at home. I think this is one way we can really tighten up in our finances. Being a stay-at-home homeschooling mom with a military hubby doesn't bring in a ton of money. We can definitely benefit from cutting this area down drastically! The reason I'm mentioning it is because I think it will drastically affect my eating too. I make a lot better choices when I cook!

I'm ready for a green week!

Your sons are beautiful! I used to eat lunch out every day and sometimes dinner -- now that I work part-time, I can't really afford it. And I realize, I love my own cooking! I think you'll enjoy it AND save money, as well as having more control over your food for No-S purposes.

I have the cold too -- hope we both feel better soon.

Week 15

Post by tobiasmom » Tue Nov 12, 2013 1:47 pm

So I went back and read my previous No-S daily check-in from 2010/2011. Holy moly! Eye-opening. I pretty much do well for a week or two and then crash and burn for a few weeks......for the past THREE years! Oh, my! No-S works. No doubt about it. BUT it only works IF and WHeN you follow the plan. I have NOT been following the plan as written by Reinhard. Instead of 8 S days a month....I have more like 15 with all my reds. So my N days and S days are even. Good for staying the same weight. Not great for weight LOSS.

My biggest issue through the years has been diet hopping. I jump ship to Weight Watchers frequently....and cannot stick to it. I have said numerous times in 3 years that I'm going to give No-S a full year no matter what.....but have yet to actually follow through! I always come back here, though, because I know this works and is what I can do for life. BUT I have got to start following this program for more than two weeks a month. I have to give the plan a real effort the entire month.....for an entire year....and I just know there will be a world of difference!!

This is mostly my own little pep talk here so that in a year or two I can see how far I've come!

I'm 197 today. The good news is that Im down quite a bit from my early years of No-S! But imagine the results if I had actually stuck to No-S the entire 3 years (of course one of those years I was pregnant!)

New resolve. Feeling hopeful. No more yo-yo'ing! I've got two S days a week...period! I've gotta stop letting my mind convince me otherwise!

I'm under the weather today....but I can still have my three plates (maybe some soup even!). No workout today. Gotta rest my body!

The great news is that you are "quite a bit down" then when you started. I think maintaining is an accomplishment, and losing is a miracle. Being a perfect dieter/eater, whatever you want to call it, is like being a perfect human, there is no such thing. I have crashed and burned for years, and that probably won't change. Why? Because eating is a comfort and a pleasure. I love to eat and I love to cook. But the important thing, is getting back up after every time you crash and burn. You are doing great, and with a pregnancy! You are lighter than me, and I've never been pregnant, so I have no excuse, lol. Take it one day at a time, don't look at the whole picture, it is too over whelming. What do you need to do to make it to lunch, then to dinner, then to bed, where will the land mines be and how to avoid them, I do this daily. Sometimes I get very mad that I have to do this everyday. Why couldn't I just be a naturally moderate person with no weight problem? But, that is not my reality, so I must focus on what I can control and conquer.

You said...
No-S works. No doubt about it. BUT it only works IF and WHeN you follow the plan
Hello!! YES!!! We are so on the same path here! But, we are STILL here! I may be a slow learner, but I am determined to keep at this! I too am looking at this long term....a year from now! Determined to just plug away one day at a time and see where I am in a year.

I think your post really resonates with so many of us. Thanks for sharing (and to others that have chimed in, too). And thanks for letting us see your precious boys (I have 2 boys, too....).

Week 15

Post by tobiasmom » Sat Nov 16, 2013 12:12 am

I had a horrible week. I wake up in the morning with resolve....and then the sugar just gets me! I have to get it out of my system and have a little darn willpower! Ugh! I'm having headaches. My blood pressure is up. I haven't worked out. I'm bloated. I'm tired. It's like that verse in the bible...why do I do the very things I don't want to do and don't do the things I want to do?? My mind, my heart, and my physical action aren't lining up!

BUT I refuse to quit trying. It's so frustrating, but I know deep down that this is how I'm going to get there. I WILL get there, by the way! No question.

November

Post by tobiasmom » Thu Nov 21, 2013 2:27 pm

It's been a pretty miserable November. Just haven't gotten my act together! BUT in one week it's my boys' birthday! Yes, the day before Thanksgiving the baby turns 1 AND Tobias turns 6! I've decided to take that day and Thanksgiving day as S days and try to keep the rest of this month green....starting with today!!

Haven't gotten to the gym. Linc has had allergies that turned into a major cold! Darn Texas allergies!

Gotta keep pressing forward.....[/img]

As a mom of four I can so relate. People talk about aging all their weight during pregnancy. I gained about 20 pounds during each pregnancy, it was after having the baby when I gained. Bites of this or that, lTe night comfort eating while watching TV ALL BY MYSELF! Ugh. Please don't be so hard on yourself. Keep trying, maybe work on one habit at a time. For a long time I tried to stick to three plates but failed over and over . My worst offender was late night eating. I decided that no matter what I will not eat after dinner and started from there. It helped a lot.
As far as the gym goes, I have joined and quit so many gums over the years...... I finally decided that with really little ones it just was. Of worth it. I go now to a place that only has classes, but my baby is 5 now so it is doable.
Don't underestimate the benifits of a good walk. Taking your kid to the park and chasing him around while the baby is in a swing or stroller is exercise too. Kicking a ball around in the back yard is exercise.
I live in the Chicago subarbs. As long as we layer our clothes and have proper coats boots gloves and hats long underwear you can go out in almost ANY weather. Even really little ones. I have taken my kids to Christmas parades and the Zoo in freezing temperatures, babies included. Just dress them properly. It is good for everyone to get fresh air and exercise.

My point is don't limit yourself to the gym. Be gentle on yourself when you mess up. It is hard with a baby. Enjoy them. It does get easier, there is a light at the end of this tunnel.

I feel like I need to add that I do believe in grammar, but cannot be bothered! Sorry! Typing from my phone, as my computer is broken.

Keep on going, I feel like I could have written your post (well, without the phone typos! ha ha). But I only have two kids. Maybe some things just are common to life in general.

Thanksgiving week

Post by tobiasmom » Mon Nov 25, 2013 2:55 pm

So now I have the darn cold!! Ugh... Unending snot and coughing. Linc STILL has it. It's been almost a month now! This weather has really messed us up...45 one week, 85 the next, then back to 45!!!!

But I started out the morning with a nice big bowl of whole grain cereal with banana in it. I think it keeps me fuller than my bagel (even though I DO love that bagel)! I'm also going to go back to cooking The Fresh 20 meals next week. It was cheaper on my budget and just healthier for my family. I do like No More To Go a lot, but it's increased my food bill and way too much fat and sugar....and I would like to get more veggies in the boys :). I wish I was someone that could make the same 20 or so meals each month....but it's not my personality. I've tried, but I just love making new meals each week so I'm not bored.....and the menus help me with that! the boys keep me busy so I need it all planned out for me.

So that's the deal. Trying to make some better choices for my health but number one trying to stick with my three plates and NO sweets on N days. That has been my biggest problem. I am a sugar monster!

December

Post by tobiasmom » Mon Dec 02, 2013 1:25 pm

Weight: 201.2 (+7)

Holy moly! I gained 7 pounds in November. Of course this number is probably mostly showing my crazy Thanksgiving weekend including the boys' birthday...but still! It's disheartening. It has nothing to do with No-S. It was all me NOT following the plan!

It's a new month. Clean slate. Wipe away November and move on! Something I'm excited about is that hubby told me this morning, "I'm going to do No-S today." Yay! He doesn't have much to lose (maybe 20), but as he gets older he can't continue to eat the way he does. He eats A LOT. He ran a marathon a couple weeks ago, and with all the training he just maintained his weight. So he mentioned he needs to cut back on his eating, mostly sweets! This will help me a ton to have him on board with me because I eat as much as him and haven't run a marathon :). Let's just say it hasn't been working out for me!

We both need to be healthy for our kids and each other and ourselves! But I know this is my journey, alone, in a lot of aspects. Nobody makes me eat. I am responsible for what I put in my mouth. That's ONE thing I do have control over in this world. Well.....I have the ability to control it. I just haven't been doing a good job at that :)

December is going to be enjoyable AND green!! It doesn't have to be one or the other!

Day 1

Post by tobiasmom » Tue Dec 03, 2013 2:18 am

SUCCESS!!!!!!

B: 1/2 bagel with peanut butter, 1/2 banana (the kids swiped my other half), black coffee
L: big plate of salad with tons of veggies and avocado and feta and salami and ranch
D: ham, roasted potatoes, peas

Activity: 1 hour cardio/weights

It feels soooo good! I know it's ONLY one day, but for me it's huge. Once I get the ball rolling I can usually keep it going....until I hit a bump in the road! Ha. I wish it didn't take me so long to get back on my journey. But I'm learning each and every day how to get THERE!

Day 2

Post by tobiasmom » Wed Dec 04, 2013 1:46 pm

FAILURE!

Darn.... I got really hungry at 10:30...had some triscuits and then for some reason lost it the rest of the day! Ugh. I should have just had the darn triscuits and moved on! Hindsight is 20/20.

Today is my 14-year wedding anniversary! So blessed with this man of mine! So for my health and our future....today WILL be green!

good luck on starting up your 21 days again! Lincoln getting so sick seemed to have derailed you a bit. I'm sure you'll be back on track again soon.... it's all par for the course with having little ones.

Hey...

Post by tobiasmom » Wed Dec 18, 2013 1:33 am

Oh, boy. Been trying some crazy stuff lately. None of it works. What's the point? I always head right back here! I am driving myself insane! My goodness!!

Gotta make the last few weeks of 2013 count and stick with the freedom No-S gives. My #1 goal for 2014 is definitely going to just be sticking with No-S alone. Not even visiting those other blogs or websites or diet books. My mind just plays tricks on me!! I feel like a darn broken record. I am in bondage to dieting. Period.

With God, No-S, and a huge dose of patience.....I WILL get there!
