No BS Here!

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

inswsn, I see by your tagline that you are no stranger to success yourself!!

As a newbie, I am clearly in the honeymoon phase with No "S" but I am heartened by the ease of my past two weeks.

It gives me hope & a small but growing platform from which to build.

gk, for the time being, at least, it appears that I'm passionately in love with No "S", the smooth talking simply sexy hunk of good health & well being!!! LOL!!! Clearly No "S" means more to me than pseudo-sweets, sloppy seconds & sticky snacks!!

What the last 15 days have revealed to me:

1/> Unlike billions in this world, I have the luxury of greeting hunger as a friend. I won’t die if I am hungry. It feels strange (but good) to be “hollow†& “lightâ€. It feels strange (but good) to have a genuine appetite and not be “full†ALL THE TIME, 24/7/365.

2/> Portion control is easy when you are not constantly grazing, snacking & munching your way through life. Three plates liberated me from food slavery.

3/> It’s a hoot getting a wine buzz from one glass of wine on an empty stomach. I forgot what that was like since I’ve seldom allowed my stomach over the years the absolute freedom to be empty.

4/> Like a genie freed from the bottle, my three plates grant me three wishes daily. Will I plan ahead & use them wisely & well? If I do not, can I learn from my gustatory & gastronomic errors & try again tomorrow? When the plate genie will appear, again, faithfully, and grant me, again, three wishes…………….

So well put! Love your outlook and musings over the past 15 days. I might have to reflect on this post from time to time as well - such a good reminder of what No S is all about!! :D

Oh, and I love the idea of looking at it as a fun "three wishes daily". You know, you're doing the unimagineable - you are dangerously close to making dieting..........FUN. *gasp!*

JAN 18, DAY 16 – SUCCESS
JAN 19, DAY 17 – S DAY
JAN 20, DAY 18 – S DAY

For me, No “S†= No Stress

No “S†has allowed me to put food in it’s proper place – food is not controlling me, I am controlling food. Thoughts of food no longer consume me, instead I consume food, on my three full plates a day. And, satiated, I happily, easily move on to other more important matters during the rest of the day. I can’t begin to express how much I value being able to do that once again!

Only 3 more weeks before the sun finally comes back to us & peeks over the horizon again so we can finally say goodbye to three months of darkness! Dark season this year for me has been long & tiresome. Watching out for polar bears is a drag – makes for shorter, googly-eyed walks in the dark with the dogs. It’ll be so wonderful to see daylight again! The wind is out of the SE tonight so it has warmed up to -26C/-15F. Life is good!

Have a great week everyone!! GO GREEN GO!!!

JAN 21, DAY 19 – SUCCESS
JAN 22, DAY 20 - SUCCESS
JAN 23, DAY 21 - SUCCESS

So, my first 21-day cycle is up. These green habits and my peace of mind are starting to gel.

My discoveries over the past three weeks:

1. I eat as much nutritionally dense food (no franken-foods or industrial food products) as I feel like as long as it fits on my plate. No measuring, no notes, no counting calories, no food insecurity.
2. I don’t eat refined/industrial sugar(s) or flour or any commercially prepared foods with unhealthy/unrecognizable/chemical ingredients. They are my triggers for crap & more crap.
3. I do healthy food from scratch prep (ie: soups/stews/legumes/healthy baking/granola/nut butters) on weekends so I am well prepared for the upcoming work week.
4. I don’t spend weekends breaking all the good eating habits that I spent the prior week reinforcing.
5. My next 21-day cycle will bring the exercise habit into the picture.
6. I lost 3.5 pounds off my body, with minimal effort, and a 1000 pound weight off my mind thanks to No “Sâ€!!!

I am feeling very calm, happy and tortoise like. I suspect that exercise might be the (arctic) hare in this equation!!

Hi Over43: Yes, I really do live in the Canadian Arctic. I live north of the 76th parallel, on Ellesmere Island.

Hi Amy3010: There has been cold weather all over, it seems. Not only in Europe these days but also in southern Canada! Makes me very grateful for central heating, triple pane windows & high R values in the walls/ceilings. And for longjohns & warm coats!!

JAN 25, DAY 23 – SUCCESS

Breakfast: none, wasn’t hungry
Lunch: scrambled eggs with butter & morels; unsweetened pineapple chunks in pineapple juice
Dinner: red wine, homemade chili: hamburger, kidney beans, tomatoes, mushrooms, corn, onion, chili powder; thawed frozen strawberries, medjool dates

Exercise (aka: Stella got her groove back!!): SUCCESS
Outdoors: -35 degrees Celsius today, hike with the dogs around the loop & on the beach during lunch hour, ran stairs twice (before/after work)

Fresh produce is flown in once a week, weather & planes permitting. This week all the produce froze on the way here (dragged through three airports on/off three planes over three days travel in extreme cold) and had to be thrown out by the store upon arrival. Only onions and red potatoes left in produce section. Am living off my inventory of dehydrated, canned and/or frozen (and the remnants of last week's fresh) veggies & fruit until next week's plane (Thursday, weather permitting). Plus my own home grown sprouts & fresh herbs. Fierce craving for an apple (crunch) or a juicy fresh orange for two weeks now…….

Brilliant documentary

Post by No BS » Sun Jan 27, 2013 7:47 pm

I just finished watching this terrific documentary Hungry for Change on Netflix.com. I highly recommend it!

Some dramatic personal stories of conscious life changes from obesity & illness to health, fitness & a healthy weight. Scathing personal stories indicting the commercial food-product industry that generates profits on addicting consumers to their unhealthy food-like products. Very informative & inspiring. It has stiffened my resolve to stay green & focused.

“Hungry for Change: exposes shocking secrets the diet, weightloss and food industry don't want you to know about; deceptive strategies designed to keep you coming back for more. Find out what's keeping you from having the body and health you deserve and how to escape the diet trap forever. Featuring interviews with best selling health authors and leading medical experts plus real life transformational stories with those who know what it's like to be sick and overweight. Learn from those who have been there before and continue your health journey today."

Hi Amy: Thanks for your kind comments!

A precarious supply of fruits & veggies makes them infinitely more precious to me than they ever were when I lived down south!

I used to hate going grocery shopping then but now when I hit a southern grocery store I am like an awestruck TOURIST, rubber necking shamelessly & happily groping my way through the massive displays of artfully arrayed produce. Serious produce porn that has my mouth watering!!! :D

I hope you have a super green week & that the weather is warmer in Belgium than it is here!!

Oh my goodness, gk, you made me bust out loud laughing!!! Too funny.

You know, I am totally being honest (with myself, first time in a long time) about my appetite and whether or not I am really hungry. When three plates keep coming at me, faithfully, day after day, for filling, it doesn't seem like a big deal to miss a meal or two. I spent the long last while - before No "S" - just eating because food was there or because I couldn't take the time to figure out what else I might want to do instead.

Since I live by myself, and only have to worry about pleasing myself, I really do weigh my appetite now and deliver my food accordingly!! That is another thing I am really grateful to No "S" for: giving me the breathing room (between meals) to actually & honestly weigh the legitimacy of my "hunger". Is it really for food or something else........

Thanks for making me laugh so hard! Laughter is incredible therapy, too.

This whole community is incredible therapy!!

There is a lot of wisdom, courage, compassion and honesty on this bulletin board. It encourages a person to not only treat others that way but to finally learn to also treat & accept themselves that way.

Which - along with No "S" habits - can be a first as well.

It makes me very grateful to be here......every day.

Yes, No S really makes you think about your food choices. I remember a (long) while ago, after I had been successful for a couple weeks or so, I couldn't believe how much I noticed the taste, texture, smell, etc. of the food. Even the display of it on my plate before I ate became something to enjoy. I wasn't just stuffing it in, because it was in front of me or because I was eating to cover up something else (emotional eating!) I didn't devour it because I was on a "diet". I just simply enjoyed each meal. Yes, No S fixes ALOT more than a number on a scale. It heals you inside and out. I think that is why I am still around after I struggled for so long. I remember how it feels when you stick to it and I WILL get back to that - it's just the only way that makes sense!!

Keep up the great work! :D

Exercise (aka: Stella got her groove back!!): SUCCESS
Outdoors : -35C, hike with the dogs; ran stairs x 1

I successfully fought off a bad “snack attack†that came out of nowhere, violently invading my peaceful home after dinner. I triumphed & kicked the stuffing out of the unwanted intruder!!

I worked up such a sweat doing so that I downed several glasses of ice water to distract me.

When I crave something sweet it usually means I haven’t eaten enough protein. Lesson learned: I’m thawing a rack of pork ribs for my next dinner !

Hopefully won’t have any more unwelcome after dinner "intrudersâ€.

LOL! I love the image of you doing battle with invaders! Way to go!

Thanks for what you shared on my thread - I believe you will get there too! We are all on this journey together, but we each have our own path and different obstacles.

Have a great weekend!

You know No “S†works & you are losing weight when:

1/> You’re not the only person who is aware that you are sucking in your stomach.

2/> Your new, unworn kazillion dollar winter coat, ordered online from a foreign country that deals in premium wool garments, actually FITS!!!

3/> You bounce when you walk, rather than plod.

4/> You have energy in the evenings.

5/> Insanely busy work weeks don’t make you want to fall into a comfort food binge.

6/> You are quietly confident that you can handle any situation, personal & professional, dealing with food.

7/> You can sit through interminable & stressful meetings without reflexively shoving “table snacks†in your mouth.

8/> You believe, for the first time in a long time, that you have control of yourself & your habits.

9/> You like feeling hungry & hollow before mealtimes.

10/> Honing the delayed gratification skill is a more important discipline than feeding yourself.

No BS,
first off, I really like your signature, much wisdom in that.

I've enjoyed following your thread and smiling at your fresh sense of humor. Your life reminds me, in a small way, of life in Switzerland. We have in the northwestern part where I live mild weather and little snow, though. (sadly, no snow this week)
Your simple yet delicious sounding meals remind me, also, of my food preferences. I need to try your bean and your homemade chocolate pudding recipe
I am curious, are you a native to your area, are you a scientist? (hope this is not too personal!) It must be very adventurous to live this far up north.

Hi Heddi:

Well it is 5:00 pm Sunday afternoon here and I cannot help but think of you in Switzerland and what a spectacularly gorgeous & blessed country that is!

Doing good on this system to me just means a lot of planning - because there are barely any edible fresh foods in the store, particularly over the winter. Because I am used of living up here, I learned to compensate.

The biggest thing is growing your own herbs and sprouts, fresh. So easy (as long as you don't run out of seeds!!).

An annual sealift of freight including organic peas/beans/lentils of all varieties, organic dried fruits, nuts, seeds, bulk whole flours, bulk palm sugar, dried mushrooms, dried veggies, canned veggies (yellow/green beans, tomatoes, tomato paste, mushrooms), canned fruit (pears, peaches, pineapple), canned coconut milk, canned pumpkin, plus various salsas, plus a serious spice cupboard and oil/vinegar cupboard and you can pretty much make anything. It actually is kind of fun pretending that you are living like your grandmother did with no refrigeration and no access to flown in produce. You learn a lot about nutrition in the process.

Plus we have no restaurants, theaters, malls, bakeries, fast food joints or all the other "distractions" the rest of the world seems to cope with. So if I want something to eat, I literally have to cook it all myself. You learn very quickly how to eat healthy & nutritiously - or you just don't thrive. Particularly when even providing greens for a salad - or an apple - is beyond the geographic reach of this store.

A friend flew in last week & brought me a dozen organic eggs, some fresh produce and organic home grown pork steak. He might as well have given me the world. :D

Have a super week, Heddi!

Hi MJ!

Sometimes the variety of foods may be small, but my portions certainly aren’t!!

I usually fill my plate (or bowl: oatmeal) with food and don’t stop until I scarf it all down!! I only eat when I am hungry and I only eat “nutritionally dense†non-processed foods.

If I do this, I am never unmanageably hungry between meals. Yesterday I had lunch @ 12:30 and never ate dinner (meetings delayed me at work) until @ 8:30 pm. And I wasn’t starving either, between meals, so no temptation to snack.

I really don’t care about how much nutritious food is on my plate, I only care that it is enough so I don’t do seconds, sweets or snacks.

I love No "S". It is just such an insanely simple formula. Fill your plate, fill your face & fuggedaboutit!!!

Jonas, do you think the difficulty to "fuggedaboutit" is simply because we have trained ourselves for years to obsess over food?

And that we have difficulty embracing a freedom from our obsession?

Really, if you free yourself from an all consuming obsession without replacing it with something constructive or positive - how could you "fuggedaboutit"?

I suspect No "S" is not just "diet" - it is lifestyle changes, behavior modification & embracing positive habits, rather than clinging to defeatist obsessions.

A tall order - but eminently do-able. The rewards are enormous.

Yes, I think so. Yes, yes, yehehehes.

It seems to be a habit for most of us  Writing on this board is also one way of compensating for this obsession I suppose

Re: training
I, for example, have never been on a "real diet" but since I've been about 12 I have worried about my weight (at that time I was heavier than most of my friends just because I was taller but I could not see this at that time) and more or less constantly since then I have thought that I "should eat less" and ended up at least 15 kg heavier some years later because as soon as I think "eat less" I must have sth. to eat because of the deprivation thing. This is something most of us seem to experience or to have experienced until they have started on NoS. Over the years I have lost some of those kg because I ran quite a lot and had a good time, but generally I sticked to the insane eating behavior. And over the last couple of years the running could not longer balance the overeating. It got worse when I couldn't run anymore and I had to say goodbye to a healthy BMI and to some of my favourite clothes.

The not-being-in-control and the gaining seem to have stopped now thanks to NoS. I love it.

I don't know if you wanted to read all this - blame yourself for asking questions.

the not feeling in control thing is what always causes self sabotage for me when i do a diet. that inner voice wants to rebel "why can't i have this? i'm going to have it"... i think my whole life i've wanted to be in control. i like how we just have to practice moderation during the week and know that if i want to i can have some stuff on the weekend (and not that i would go crazy every Sday, but just having that option)...

@ Jonas:

Thanks for answering so honestly :) !

I am definitely interested in your thoughts.

It's interesting over the years how physical activity compensated for a lot of nutritional "sins". Same for me. Inevitably, though, it seems there is always a day of reckoning!!

@ MJ:

Do you think that your "inner voice" is trying to wrest "control" from you? Or do you think you are trying to wrest control from your inner voice? :?

By electing to control your food intake you have dictated the parameters, the boundaries if you will, of your food environment. Your "inner voice" is the unwelcome intruder entering your domain to do you harm, violating your integrity, and hurting you. It is not a "rebellion", it is lethal sabotage.

You are the police, the jury, judge & executioner in this particular "home invasion" scenario. You have the authority to protect your food environment. Only you can decide if you wish to wield that authority, or not. The damage occurs only if you fail to call your personal 911 to deal with the matter of your sabotaging "inner voice".

Completed Two 21-day Cycles - NO CHEATING!!!

Post by No BS » Thu Feb 14, 2013 5:50 pm

Two – 21 day Cycles of No “S†- SUCCESS

I trust the wisdom of No “So†more than the “wisdom†of my prior BS eating habits.

Full plates at mealtimes, an occasional glass of wine or beer, and my version of “sweets†quite regularly, and only regular dog walking and a bit of stair running.

AND STILL I am losing one pound a week!!

Time will always pass, the weeks will always go by, as I No "S" my excess off, week by week. It can't get easier than that!!!

No “S†and no BS – works for me.

Now I absolutely positively totally completely undeniably and reliably have to up the exercise!! Perhaps a HabitCal??? :?

Sometimes when I am not really hungry & don’t need to sit down with a plate of DINNER, eat eat eat, DONE, that’s it – I build myself a plate of finger food to nosh on, slowly, over the course of time and as my dinner.

Things like: raw baby carrots, apple wedges dredged in lemon juice, almonds, dried cranberries, fresh button mushrooms, raw pepper slices, some loose grapes (whatever our store manages to get in fresh to add to my warehoused items), maybe a small ramekin of cranberry salsa.

I happily graze & nosh over the course of an hour or so, feeding from this prepared plate of nibbles, all washed down with a glass of wine or two. I always feel eminently satisfied. Simple as it seems, it is still a really nice treat for me. :D

Thanks, Sweetness! I do have fun with food prep & cooking.

My mouth waters when I think of the gorgeous fresh food markets in Mexico, around the Caribbean (Jamaica, Dominican) and in the Honduras - particularly around this time of the year!!

Fruits & veggies I can only dream about, both in variety & quality.

Enjoy! :)

Hi MJ and Amy:

I really enjoy reading what everyone else is eating - and cannot help myself from posting daily snapshots of my growlies as well.

It keeps me honest & focused, plus it reminds me of my historical record and what works best to keep me on track.

It also reminds me to have FUN with food: when my food becomes "serious business" it means I am losing my balance.

Have a great weekend! :D

I loved your nosh plate, too.
And I especially liked the "glass of wine or two" bit. I bet there aren't that many of the kazillion (new word, new word, thank you) diets/eating plans on which this is possible.

Hi Jonas:

Yes, for sure about the occasional glasses of wine & diets. It's so great with No "S" how the variety of food & textures & tastes (and what you wash it down with!!) is limited only by your own imagination!

I suspect what I like best about No “S†is realizing I don’t just have zero time & a million pounds to lose but rather I have the rest of my life to relax & eat myself well.

It so totally gets rid of the “hurry up & hate†epic diet fail mentality.

I trust No “Sâ€, since my history with food has already proven I can’t trust myself. :D

Mmm your meals always sound delicious! Although I don't personally think I could count cake as an N day meal  if it works for you then that's all that counts :)

Thank you for stopping by my daily thread. I just browsed through yours and...wow! You are like a superhero on this thing. Good for you. You make it look easy. I am going to steal your three wishes idea when I make my meals. Thanks and keep it up!

LET THEM EAT CAKE!!!

I suspect the way most people bake cake, it probably wouldn't be counted a N day meal Success. However, I suspect this "cake" is like no other angel food cake! :o

This is a no sugar, no gluten (no wheat flour) angel food cake, made out of real food ingredients, any of which can be legitimately eaten on a N day, so I classify it as food not "cake". Ergo the quotes around the word "cake".

Ingredients

12 egg whites, at room temperature
1/4 cup millet flour
1/4 cup tapioca flour
1/4 cup white rice flour
1/4 cup sweet rice flour
1/4 teaspoon xanthan gum
1 teaspoon cream of tartar
1/4 teaspoon salt
1/2 cup agave nectar
1 tablespoon vanilla extract
1 ½ teaspoon fresh-squeezed lemon juice

I have many deconstructed recipes for "cakes" and "cookies" and "muffins" that do not include the ingredients that make them horrific caloric or nutritional nightmares but instead nutritious food that can be eaten as part of a healthy, whole food menu. All the ingredients for the recipe can legitimately be put on your plate as part of a healthy No "S" dinner. My black bean brownie recipe is WICKED  and perfectly legitimate on any day, as long as it is part of a meal.

Here is the link to the recipe:
http://simplysugarandglutenfree.com/angel-food-cake/

There are literally hundreds of legitimate websites that offer healthy baked food recipes that deconstruct the crap ingredients from what others call cake, cookies, sweets. I wish more people would discover them. It sure has done a lot to help me resolve my good/bad food issues and adopt a healthy approach to all foods. Just takes a little bit of knowledge and a little bit of baking!

When you know you can bake a healthy dessert from scratch & eat it anytime you wish, as long as it is with a meal, on any day you wish, it completely takes the pressure off when it comes to "cheating" on No "S".

I just stay away from the bought/processed/packaged garbage (even on an "S" day) because that stuff sure is not nutritious or healthy.

Ps: I didn't eat the WHOLE cake for dinner!! I had two generous slices and gave the rest away to my friend (skinny friend I might add!!) for her & her kids to enjoy. Healthy & tasty as it is, even that "cake" shouldn't be the sole focus of my food attention until it is consumed.

Even though I eat healthy, I still have a lot of ingrained food issues I am slowly addressing.

What an interesting recipe - that's a lot of different types of flour!

I've seen some of your posts about using real and natural ingredients rather than processed ones and theoretically agree wholeheartedly. Due to ingrained laziness though, I think I'll stick with cutting out sweets during the week and eating what I like at weekends :) I would point out that it's no sweets, not no sugar. I think the idea is to retrain ourselves not to crave so many sweet things by just not eating them so much. I definitely notice the difference after a few N days than coming off an S day. I wonder whether that would reduce even further if I cut out the refined sugars and stuck to things like maple syrup and honey?

I guess we have different approaches but that's ok! I try not to demonise any food, but I just know that I have to wait up to 5 days to eat some of them. Sweet foods aren't bad, they just need to be eaten in moderation right? Your way is as valid as any - make your 'sweet' foods as healthful as possible and enjoy them as part of your meals.

I am so not a superhero but I do find No "S" relatively easy. Only because I totally trust No "S" since history has proven to me, time and time again, that I can't trust myself around food.

It is easy for me when I just do what I am told on No "S". Nothing else. Just do what I am told.

That is so true! I just love this BB because of the kazillions of totally different ways of experiencing this journey - all totally valid and all offered up by people just like us - trying to find a way to live at peace with ourselves, our bodies and our food.

It is really a humbling experience being part of such a powerful, primal and profoundly personal movement.

Thanks, MJ! I am enjoying myself with this No "S" but find I struggle every day with my commitment for significant exercise. I refuse to give up trying, though.

Hi Amy, my daily exercise ritual that happens no matter what is the dogs walking me for one hour every day, even in -40C. And I do run the stairs most every day, at least once, sometimes two or three runs, as well.

But I don't call that "real" exercise. That's just like breathing, just as reflexive because the dogs don't give me the option of refusing.

What I call "real exercise" that brings out a sweat in me is using the elliptical & using the sledge hammer (5 days a week). That is what I am really really aspiring to do faithfully.

You dedicated exercise pros give me hope that I will get there too!

You're doing so great.

I actually looked up hamburger soup because I live near Hamburg. Didn't recognise it, though.

Morning.

I Love reading your daily check in. Transports me to a different place, love all the international posters on here. Some of the foods sound so exotic. Being from the Midwest (USA), grilled cheese and tomato soup is comfort food here so I am fascinated reading the menus.

Keep up the good work.

Jonas, your comment absolutely made my day! Thanks so much. :D I never met anyone who lives near Hamburg!! And I will think of you every time I eat my soup!

My "hamburger" soup is just fried ground/minced beef thrown in a crockpot with whatever vegetables on hiatus in the fridge, some beans (kidney, adzuki, navy, whatever) and some grain (barley or bulgur or whatever) plus onions, garlic, canned tomatoes & spices. It is usually a medley of whatever is available so I can never predict with certainty how it will taste.

But it always hits the spot on a cold day! And it fills me up.

Hi Strawberry Roan:

I like reading everyone's threads, too, and appreciate the international flavour to the posts. Also the differences in time zones make for even more interesting "comments" as everyones' day progresses.

And I totally adore reading the various "menus". Infinite possibilities, eh! :D
