Sophiasapientia's 2013 Check-In

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

Hi Berry! I enjoy reading your journal as well. I think we have a lot in common in that we both like to exercise and do well on No S when we are paying attention but tend to backslide when we aren't. I definitely need the accountability right now. It helps a lot.

Yes, the XL Glider is awesome. Very fun! 8) :)

*** Took dog for a walk. Brrr.

Need to make cookies for DH's work at some point today and will not sample any. DH received a promotion recently and is moving to a new office this week. DH's former co-workers requested my cookies before he leaves. My No S trick over the years has been to bake and then freeze some and send some in with DH to share.
*** Made cookies and didn't have any. Did freeze some, though.

This was my first full week on No S without any funny business or a NWS in a long while. It feels good. The truth is that I gain weight pretty easily if I'm not paying attention. I know this about myself and yet here I am again. I'm fit and I'm not overweight but I'd like to lose about 5 lbs and, ideally, 10. Onwards ...

Soon after dinner -- Kiddie size portion of chocolate peanut butter banana smoothie

My Vitamix arrived this evening! 8) My family thought I should give it a try and my DD wanted a chocolate peanut butter banana smoothie. I made a half a recipe and split it between the 3 of us. So, a Fail for today. I am so excited about my new gadget, though. I am hoping that, especially during the warmer months, I can incorporate smoothies/green smoothies as an intelligent dietary default.

Hi Sophia,

Great job on reporting and your successes! I, too, have a refurbished Vitamix that I got several years ago. I use it all the time. My latest green smoothie is: 1 banana, 1/2 c blueberries, big handful of kale, 3 T chia seeds, 1/2 c silk coconut milk, 6 ice cubes, some water, cinnamon, nutmeg, clove, vanilla - yum :!: Sounds like you are enjoying yours :)

Happy spring &/or Easter to all!

No BS -- So far, the Vita-Mix has been awesome! I haven't tried it on nut butters yet, although, I have did add almonds to my DD's smoothie the other day and it worked beautifully. We have all been amazed by its ability to blend all kinds of fruits, veggies and nuts. I will say that the machine is quite loud ... loud enough to scare the dog and that I can't really run it until everyone is awake.  Vita-Mix has a great warranty so you can't go wrong. The new ones have 7 years and my refurbished one has 5.

Our doggie is adopted so I'm not 100% on his background but we were told that he is a cocker spaniel/cavalier mix and that looks to be about right. He is very cuddly and, left to his own devices, a bit of a couch potato.

KL -- Thanks so much for your kind words! Your Green smoothie sounds super yummy! I'm going to have to give it a try! :D :D

Monday April 1, 2013

B --Pumpkin pie smoothie (similar to before but left out Splenda packet)
L -- Leftover ham, steamed asparagus, slice of sourdough w/ butter, slices of cheddar
Afternoon -- coffee
D (Chuck E Cheese's) -- Pizza and salad bar

Exercise -- Either treadmill or XL Glider

I'm glad that it is Monday and an N day after the long weekend of indulgences. My plan is to have a solid month of N Day greens in April. I'd love to drop a few pounds before my birthday in early May but habit is my main No S goal right now.

Busy spring break week ahead! DD has a bit of a cold and a joining me on long walk in the chilly air probably isn't the best plan so I'll have to do indoor exercise options for the moment.

Feeling a little discouraged because my weight is creeping up this week. I haven't really lost anything since I started journaling in mid-March. It will go down a bit and then shoot back up. Ugh. TOM is due soon so that probably isn't helping. I'm in the normal BMI range for my height but closer to the edge of the range than I feel best at or comfortable with ... As I near my 40s, I sometimes feel like I'm entering a different ballgame so far as my weight goes. Not sure if this is true or not but it seems that I can't get away with things that weren't a problem previously.

Last night, I went so far as to order a "Restart Diet" book for my Kindle. It is a 15 day plan, starting with 5 days where you only consume smoothies for your 3 main meals and have 2 snacks. Just keeping it real. But, you know, I'd really prefer not to do anything crazy or diet-head inducing.

A couple thoughts:
1.) I need to continue to focus on habit. I really need the foundation right now.

2.) I think I need to tighten the reigns on what qualifies as "seconds" for dinner. I've been virtual plating some. This works OK for me with veggies/salads/small bowls of fruit but anything else is iffy. It needs to go on my plate before the meal begins. Period. This isn't an issue for my other meals.

I quite agree, sophia. I wouldn't get hung up on weight, scales, losing/gaining or anything other than eating three meals a day & focusing only on that habit - nothing else.

We know there are no shortcuts - just time, patience & good habits. The "shortcuts" are really "longcuts", tactics that delay/prevent us from making the long term changes we need for a healthy body weight/image and to live at peace with our food and ourselves.

Good luck, sophia. It can be a tough journey but the rewards are enormous! And there are tons of people to help on this BB. :)

Thanks for the Vita-Mix tip! I ordered one.

Thanks so much for your support, No BS! ... I know you're right about there not being any shortcuts. I agree that focusing on habit is the right thing to do. I think if I keep my priority on that and, for health reasons, on making sure that I'm eating plenty of fruits/veggies and exercising, everything will fall into place. I've been feeling very good and positive the last couple days. No S is a very doable and sane WOE. :D ... I'm excited about your Vitamix! I hope that you have as much fun with yours as I've been having with mine! Love it! 8)

Trying to heal some long term gut issues for overall health reasons. Going to experiment w incorporating more coconut oil and kefir into my diet, among other things, to see if that helps. Just added a tsp of coconut oil to my afternoon cup of joe and it was a little oily but enjoyable. May consider doing a short term cleanse next month, if it seems necessary.

I've really being feeling an increased sense of inner wellness/health the past couple of days. Not sure if it is due to the kefir, coconut oil, increased greens, etc in my diet or perhaps a combination of everything but I'm feeling really good. I am starting to see some physical benefits (softer skin, etc) as well. I think that I am on the right track with things. Yay!

I am hopeful, too, that there is improvement with my gut issues. That would be wonderful. 8) I've been thinking that I probably need to limit sweets, even on the weekends, as my system heals. I'm not planning on completely eliminating them or anything but just keeping things in moderation and focusing on foods/beverages that are beneficial to my health.

Seeing definite improvement with gut issues. In terms of weight, overall the trend seems to be heading down very, very, very slowly. Maybe. Today it was 134, up a bit from where it was last week  with BMI of 23.7. I would still love to lose 5-10 lbs and get down a little lower on the normal BMI range. Prior to late last fall/the holidays, I had maintained my weight in that range for a long time so the goal seems like it should be realistic.

For May, my priority is to continue focusing on habit and healing the gut
problems. I'll take a NWS for my birthday and probably one for Memorial Day. Our wedding anniversary is this month as well but, luckily, falls on an S Day. If my weight isn't solidly down a couple of pounds by the end of the month then I'll have to look at tweaks in June. I'm a little frustrated because my No S and exercise habits have been strong this month and my S days have been reasonable.

How are your clothes fitting?

I've always been obsessed with the scale, to the point of it determing my daily moods. This is why my fiance hid it and I love him so dearly for that.

Just keep chugging along and you will reach your goal. Remember those last 5 to 10 lbs hold on for dear life.

Hi Eeyore! In terms of clothes, I can pretty much fit into everything I wore last summer. Some pieces have been a little tighter but do seem to be loosening up.

I understand about being obsessed with the scale and needing to avoid it. For me, it seems like I do best when I chart it on a regular basis and watch the trend. I usually weigh in Tuesday through Saturday mornings, skipping the day after an S day/NWS day. If I'm not keeping an eye on the scale, it usually means that my habits are off. In fact, the last time I stopped is when I gained the current excess that I'm trying to shed.

Busy, busy weekend with big event for kiddo, plans with friends to take our girls to see Taylor Swift in concert and a TON of yardwork. S Days weren't majorly over the top but with a NWS followed by a fail on Friday, I'm feeling pretty bloated and I'm sure the scale is up. Planning on avoiding it for the next few days while I regroup.

I'm at a coffee shop now, in between appointments, and I had a smallish muffin and a coffee for breakfast. I'm going to give myself a pass on the muffin and then aim to have a squeaky clean, green M-F.

Monday May 6, 2013
B (out) -- Cran orange muffin, coffee
L (planned) -- Monster green smoothie
Coffee w coconut oil
D -- Italian sub, cut up veggies and chips

Exercise -- Walking, yardwork and mowing

An "off" week for No S. I had a pretty big fail on Tuesday. I made cookies for Teacher Appreciation week at DD's school and ate about 6. I'm usually able to bake without a problem. In retrospect, I think PMS played into this binge.

Anyhoo, just busy. Activity level has been high. Haven't been wanting kefir for breakfast. This morning I skipped breakfast altogether and just had coffee w coconut oil when I met with friends for our standing school year date.

Onwards ...
