Linda's daily check-in

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

I am so frustrated for you! Not sure what is going on, other than perhaps you are already at a healthy weight? Or something is sticky with your metabolism, and it is being a stubborn son-of-a-gun?

Glad though that your fam is tight, you know? That counts for (almost) everything.

Pleased to hear about the girls you must be so proud.

3lb down in a year is better than 3 up but I can see how it may feel like not a lot.

It's a positive place to be in. If you managed 3 down again this year thats nearly half a stone, If I lost 3 a year now without feeling deprived I'd be pretty pleased.

Hi Linda, just to add my sympathy for your frustrating year. I think I agree with Soprano that in the grand scheme of things, losing 3lb is a success, and considering your amazing weight loss in the past, it’s perhaps bound to slow down...I know none of us really know what’s going on in there (in our bodies I mean), and whether we’ve done something to sabotage our success, so it can be bewildering and annoying... but let’s face it, most women are GAINING a little weight every year, or losing loads and putting more back on. So you’re still ahead of the game, still winning, still on track, and if you think of how big three pound-bags of sugar are, or think of three pounds of butter, it’s a HUGE amount. Like, one of my own buttocks. Almost. 😉🤣 It’s just those degrees on the scale look so darned small!

But I can imagine how you feel, after making so much sustained effort. I imagine the really tough thing is not really knowing WHY it’s like this. sending you hugs. X
PS great news about the girls getting As!

Thanks you guys! You’re right about it not being so bad. I had a 4 lb whoosh yesterday so I just think I need to have a little more patience with this holiday weight. I’m down 20 lbs or so from 1.5 years ago and I’ve kept off 55 lbs so that’s the bigger picture.

I’m really taking Kayla’s advice to make your plan your own and to make it enjoyable. I’m looking at the stuff I really don’t want to give up and the stuff that’s easier for me to give up and coming up with a plan that is doable and hopefully effective. I left my fasting fb groups (except Kayla’s) to just kind of quiet all the noise and figure out what’s going to work for me. We shall see!

Tomorrow the girls go back to school-ugh! Not looking forward to getting up early and being a chauffeur again. Oh well. I’m glad we had a nice break.

155.5 lbs (new high tech scale coming tomorrow ).

Soy latte
Chips and guacamole, tacos, 2 glasses of wine
Split a couple desserts with family

That is a great idea about leaving other fasting groups. I swear I need to delete Instagram or stop following the clean eating nutritionists on there. It just messes with your head when you have so many different views going on in your mind.

Also back to chauffeuring! I just want to put a plug in for those of us who are stay at home Moms. It chills me to find out about the problems of children whose parents both worked. I think those car conversations are so important -- even at 6:45 AM!

In my house, yes, I am a chauffeur - but how often do ordinary passengers harrass the chauffer?

Ooooh, do tell more about the high-tech scale? Does it measure body fat?

Yeah it’s definitely been helping square!

Awww, I’m glad I’m not the only chauffeur! Nice to know I’m not alone. That’s true Kathleen those conversations can be important but I definitely think kids can thrive with two working parents. So many possible ways to parent well.

Auto, lol and I’ve yet to get a tip even though I provide snacks and let them choose the music. *Humph*

oh I got the YUNMAI scale and it’s pretty cool. It syncs with your phone app and tells you body fat, bone mass etc. Not sure how accurate it is but it is supposed to be one of the more accurate scales. I was nervous to get on it because for the last couple of years I’ve been using a scale that only tells you how much you’ve lost or gained. So I’m always having to do math in my head to figure out my weight. I was worried that it would say I actually weighed way more than I though but actually it was about 1 lb less.

Soooo it said my body fat was about 22% which is in the healthy range and actually for my age I shouldn’t really go much lower. My BMI is still high though so I guess I just need to lose some weight but not a lot of fat. I guess just keeping the proportions the same is key. Interesting. It definitely made me feel better though. My visceral fat was in a good range as well so that’s good.

Now I’m just confused on what my weight goal should be and what my plan should be. I swear it changes everyday. I tried for 23/1 today but just got too hungry and ended up at about 21/3. I’m pmsing so it’s to be expected I guess. The problem is I’ve gotten away from clean fasting and the stuff I put in my tea is making me hungry. I don’t really want to go back to black tea though. It’s just not enjoyable. I wish I could have cream but it gives me reflux. Cream doesn’t make me hungry probably because it’s not spiking my insulin. See my conundrum?

Well I guess I have to take it day by day for now...

156.2 lbs
22/3

Soy latte w/ stevia x2
Crackers and cheese, grapes, coconut water
2 pieces of sweet potato, ricotta and thyme bake
Several pieces of chocolate

Dry day-yay! Oh and Doc has decided to go vegetarian so I’ve joined him and the girls already were. We are officially a vegetarian household!

Hello Linda
I have been on the NoS routine 8 years now but I strayed from this site. Like you I have maintained a large weight loss (45 lbs). I am catching back up with the people on this site and noticed you lost significantly more weight the past year or two
Any words of wisdom on getting on the weight loss track again? Maintenance is important but I really need to lose more weight rather than stop short of a normal BMI like I did.
The journey is the reward.
Maintenance is progress.

Thank you guys!!

It’s consistently been 22% or under so I feel pretty confident with this number. It’s crazy how much better I feel about myself now. It’s like I finally have permission to feel okay. Getting on the scale is actually a positive experience these days despite the fact that my weight is up (pms).

Of course I’d love for the scale to go down but it doesn’t feel so urgent or important.

Anyway, the journey continues!

PS Jean, need to think about that answer. I’ve been successful but struggled quite a bit at the same time.

Sick with an ear infection. So happy it’s friday so I can rest up a bit and Rosebud my high maintenance child is at a sleepover so extra bonus.

I’ve been doing 19/5 which is super doable and enjoyable but I’m having trouble feeling satiated on a purely vegetarian diet. I think I need to get some tofu.

Falling asleep.

Welcome back! I did go check your blog to make sure I wasn't missing too much and so I saw your one post over there. :-)

Maybe the ear infection and the current sickness are the same thing - but it moved and never went away? Sorry you are not feeling well. :-(

You know how you said you don't need to lose fat but you just need to lose weight? Like, I'm not sure what more you lose then! Because you certainly don't want to lose muscle or bone ..... Have you taken your measurements much during your IF journey? Even if you haven't yet, maybe you can start now? And then you can see if any tweaks or methods you do make a difference? Have you talked about any interest in more serious weight-lifting? That could be a rad new outreach for you - a sexy woman powerlifter that talks about social issues while she signs autographs.

Oh boy, nipping this in the bud asap.

Weight still up. I thought i was going to try adf but 20 hrs into it and i was like yeah nope. I think omad is for me. I did lunch today because my mom is in town and i didnt want to sit there drinking black tea while everyone ate.

I did keep both lunch and dinner to a half hour though so still only an hour window technically i guess. I will probably have to do the same tomorrow since were going to lunch with my aunt. Oh well. I just hope I get back to the 150s at the very least.

Im 20 days late and my breasts feel like when I was pregnant so definitely some fun hormonal stuff going on. On top of thst im having with a conflict with a woman in my group. Many ppl have had problems with her and a member told me they didnt feel comfortable coming to meetings knowing she might be there. I removed her from the fb group and told her she could return if she could agree to be respectful at all times. Well now she seems to be out to get me. Im not really sure what kind of trouble she could cause for me. To be honest, even if my Indivisible group fell apart, its not the end of the world. Ive got plenty of other things to occupy me on the activist front.

Still it just gives me a bad feeling knowing im on her bad side. Shes not one to let things go. Its kind of making me shut down and just not want to deal with anyone in that circle. I tend to do that. Walk away and start from scratch. Going to try to stick it out this time though.

I sympathise, regarding this problematic woman. I'm a bit like you in that I tend to walk away from problem people/groups, and just start afresh. But maybe if you stick it out you'll learn that you can overcome this unpleasant conflict. I really hate that feeling when someone seems to dislike me - it's as if I start to see myself as somehow worthy of dislike. A weird and unpleasant, all-consuming feeling. Anyway I hope this woman starts to behave. Repeat to yourself: "it's not me, it's her."

Have a lovely weekend Linda!

Thanks Octavia! Shes a piece of work but i just hate the fact that someones out to get me. Maybe she’ll let it go but thays not how she tends to operate. I wish I wasnt direct with her and ignored the whole thing but maybe it just kind of fizzle out. Yes, my instinct right now is to just flee from everything but ive got a political event tomorrow and shes likely to be there. Luckily my neighbor is going with me. Hes a big, intimidating guy.

Well I think im finally gettimg my period and hopefully ill drop some water weight. Today has been a little stressful. My car window got shattered by I rock from the road and we just found out our renters aren’t renewing their lease so will have to find new renters. Likely thatll mean missing at least one month rental income as well as having to pay for cleaning, painting etc.

Other than that we had a nice day with friends and family.

‘It never rains but it pours,’ as my dad used to say when a catalogue of disasters occurred! Keep smiling. He also used to say, ‘as long as you’re eating your dinner.’ ie. all will be well.

Wow, i say super a lot. I didnt fast today as I was feeling a bit depressed & just wanted to eat. You know what’s funny? When i was so overweight, i didnt have bouts of depression. The food really kept it at bay. I guess it was a self-medication of sorts. Anyway, ate a ton and i have to see my hairdresser tomorrow. She always notices my weight. Oh well.

Feeling a bit of a disconnect lately on here as well as my other sources of support. Just not sure where I belong right now. I guess im closest to my neighbor/friend. We’ve been spending a lot of time with their family and it’s nice but I had to examine my feelings for the husband whom I spend a lot of time with and have been feeling very attached to. When i thought about it though there’s definitely no romantic feelings, I think it’s actually because we’re so much alike. Hes never given me the slightest indication that he has romantic feelings either so i think we’re safe. I guess I’ve never really had a guy friend that didn’t eventually lead to more so this is new to me.

Hi Linda -
Virtual hugs coming your way. I'm sorry about the bouts of bummed-out-feelings and not feeling super (see I say super too a lot too!) connected right now. I hope that it passes soon. From my perspective, you just have a lot going on right now and you are working out a lot of different things in your life, from activism, raising teen girls (instead of little girls), finding your long-term balance with food, and perhaps coming to a new peace/place with who you are and how you want to spend the next phase of your life. That's a lot to process. I love to hear your thoughts and reflections; they mean a great deal to me. Indeed, Sexy knows all about my dear NoS friend "Linda" and the many insights she has shared with me on this forum! In fact, Challenger and Creator even know about Linda! :-) Your influence spreads far and wide!

In other news, I am thinking about breaking up with my hairdresser. She can't see very well anymore and she doesn't always cover up my gray. But of course I feel too bad to say anything. But breaking up is hard to do (music inserted here).

Wow thank you for that Auto! So cool that your family knows about your NoS family and that I made the cut. â˜ºï¸ Also, once again you’re so perceptive and Id say pretty spot on as to what im going through right now. It’s a lot I guess. I feel like I have so many ideas but very little follow through and maybe i just need to enjoy where I’m at right now.

I kind of had an epiphany moment today when I realized i need/want to bring some NoS structure back into my life. I think what is frustrating me with fasting right now is theres just too many decisions and its taking too much brain space. Theres too many questions i have to confront throughput the day. How long should my window be? What time should i open it? How much should i eat once my window is open? Should i have dessert and if so, how much?

*Phew* I miss the simplicity of plates and basic rules. So I decided to just keep M-F to one plate, no sweets; Saturday will be two plates, sweets okay and Sunday ill do 3 plates so i can have at least breakfast once a week.
Also. Im going to clean fast at least till noon and then allow cream but no sugar in my tea after that.

I will try it out and see. No promises as I tend to change my mind a lot but i feel good about this. Something very comforting about coming back to my old ways.

Falling asleep...

Omgosh my reflux is really acting up. I know the wine isnt helping but each night im optimistic that i can get away with it so i try again. Tonight i poured the rest of my wine bottle down the sink and am determined to take a break till next Saturday when we’re going out to dinner with friends.

The one plate thing is going well. I know itd be easier if I did a clean fast all the way till dinner but Im just not there right now. I rather fight a few hunger pangs then drink black tea.

I discovered this new cookbook and am just having a blast cooking again. Its funny how i get down on myself for obsessively searching for the right snswer but I feel like this style of cooking is exactly what ive been looking for so maybe searching for the perfect solution isnt such a waste of time after all. Im kind of feeling the same way about my one plate solution. I was so annoyed at myself for constantly trying to find that perfect plan but now that I’ve found something I really enjoy (for now) it seems worth it.

Anyway, the cookbook is Love & Lemons. Heres the blog: . https://www.loveandlemons.com/about-us/

Basically, you stock up your pantry with items like nuts, canned tomatoes, cheeses, grains, and condiments. Then you get produce that looks good and is in season and you go from there to build your meal. It just makes so much sense to me and Im having a great time with it. There are recipes but they’re super flexible depending upon what you have on hand.

21.3%

Dinner: spaghetti squash with spinach, pine nuts, parmesean cheese, & pesto; kale salad w/ feta, black beans and avocado; avocado hummus w/ pita chips. Wine.

Dessert: yogurt w fruit & nuts ( when plating my dinner I put a small ramekin on it to make sureit fits and take it to put my dessert in it later).

Exercise: 30 min walk, 30 min upper body

Im working on a couple of goals:
1) no alcohol 16 days a month
2) tv only on Friday night to sunday night
3) stop gossiping so much (hardest one for me ☺ï¸).
4) reach 145 lbs by August 1st

That is a lot of goals!

Love the cooking, but sorry about the reflux. I really do think that alcohol makes it worse, so hopefully the pain-free moments will inspire you about your 16 alcohol-free days.

And I'm sorry about my "sky is falling" post over on my thread. I just love this forum so much, and I have so much here.....

I feel like your post exuded more joy than you've had for a bit. Keep cooking, girl! It seems to be your muse!

Ugh, i hate to be a complainer but i do not like the new format. I cannot figure out how to get it to jump to the last post so Im having to scroll. Plus it just feels foreign. I guess im not good with change. Ill adjust.

I had a really good weekend. My training day ended up to be fun & inspiring. I learned a lot and surprised myself by not feeling nervous when i had to get up and speak about my group. Thats never happened.

Today I was going to take my girls to the vegetarian festival butit was raining and well being a typical Phoenician, we just dont do rain. Instead we went to our favorite vegetarian hot dog place and then I took the girls shopping. I kind of splurged a bit and bought them proper bras at Nordstrom where they could get fitted. I also bought us all some cute pajamas and some cozy lounge clothes for myself. Doc just got a bonus and wanted to treat them. I feel a little guilty but not too badly.

Speaking of money im trying to decide if it’s worth it to send my girls to camp this year. Sweetpea is finally old enough to do the counselor in training program and i think itd be a great opportunity for her. The only problem is you have to go for 2 weeks which means itd only make sense for Rosebud to go for two weeks too. Itd be about 9k though so not cheap. Its a speciality camp with themes like cirque du soliel and culinary arts so its a fun & worthwhile experience, sweetpea would get something to put on her college application and doc and i would get 2 weeks off but still not sure its worth that pricetag. Need to think.

My weight seems to finally be going back down a bit and im really hoping it’ll continue in the right direction. I just want to get in the 140s so badly. Its almost just annoying at this point as ive hit like 150,2 a couple times but the 140s continue to evade me.

Today ended up being more of a grazing day then planned but not bad.

156.9

Lunch: vegan hot dog, fries, tea latte
Snack: 2 mango popsicles , chips
Dinner: more chips, yogurt

Relflux finally a bit better. Been really watching what i eat. Ive had 4 alcohol free days this month so far. Sticking to my tv weaning plan and doing horrible with my no talking about other ppl plan. Oh well.

PS just figured out how to get to the last post. Phew!

Some of the forum is a little different to get used to, but I'm just so relieved that the forum survived this storm of spam that it swamps out any temporary confusion.

That camp for the kids sounds pretty awesome!

So glad to hear the reflux is better. Hilarious to hear that "not talking about other ppl going horribly". You made me laugh out loud.

Yeah, I’m relieved too! I know auto, im horrible but I literally cannot seem to get through the day without talking crap about someone. I failed by 8am today but will keep trying. ☺️

Omg, my reflux is out of control. I was trying to think what set it off and one thing ive stopped doing is to clean fast. Maybe that complete rest from digestion was doing my body some good. The one plate could be triggering it too as it might just be too much food at once. I didnt fast at all today and was just all over the place. Im actually considering surgery as this point. I feel like ive done everything and it hasnt worked at least not long term.

Sweetpea called me from school saying she didnt feel well and was hoping id pick her up. I had a feeling she just wanted to get out of class or something so i told her to hang in there. Later she broke down crying that shes just feeling overwhelmed with things. So i helped her clean her room and sort her laundry and she seemed to feel much better. I know that shes like me and cannot relax in a messy environment. She’ll have to learn to get good at keeping things clean.

I pray i start to feel better soon. Ive got a happy hour on fridsy night and a dinner on Saturday night. Id really like to be able to enjoy a cocktail. ☺️

I know you have suffered for ages from reflux and have tried so many things. But I just stumbled upon something that works for me, and I can't remember if I told you about it. Granted, my heartburn is very occasional (hello wine + starch), so I just mention this just IN CASE you haven't tried this:
I chew a piece of gum. This has worked, 100%, on 4 separate occasions now. I have been shocked. Too, too easy of a cure. But on the off chance that it could give you even a teensy bit of relief, I mention it here.

Oh thanks for reminding me about the gum trick. I gave up gum when I started clean fasting. but no reason i cant use it during my window.

Today didnt go as planned. My friend called me last minute to meet up for coffee and i had a latte too early which made me really hungry so I was unable to stick to one plate. Oh well. My weight doesnt seem to budge either way.

I have that experience sometimes too! Where I KNOW the wine is going to bother me, but in my case, I usually drink it anyway! I am making progress, though.

And the TV while exercising - brilliant! I (generally) only can listen to my podcasts on walks or while out running errands, and I find the same thing where I am highly motivated to go on a long walk or get my shopping done. It can be a little awkward in Costco when I realize someone was trying to talk to me, but it's well worth it.

Today started out okay but ended with me feeling a little grumpy. Feeling a little fuzzy brained and blah. Im also tired of not being able to eat certain things because of my relux. Im frustrated with my weight. The usual complaints.

I drank a 1/2 a glass of wine and then had to pour it down the sink. Ive got a full weekend with social activities. Why is it such a big deal if i cant drink? I guess its a crutch. Social lubricant.

Well on the upside, my mammogram came back with no issues and Rosebud was chosen to give a speech in front of judges tomorrow. If she wins she’ll compete district wide. Itll be okay. Just wish i could find a way of eating that felt good and got me to my goals. I really thought IF was the answer.

I just read about someone in a fasting group coming to a standstill with weight loss. She tried alternate day fasting and it kickstarted her loss....

Oh yeah a lot of ppl are doing that it seems but I really, really, really hate going a whole day without eating. Ive done several 40-44 hr fasts but i just cant bring myself to do another one right now. I’ll figure it out.

The one plate idea was good but ive just gotten crazy hungry at like 2 pm each day. I dunno. I tend to stick with things really hardcore for about a year and then i just kind of start to resent the thing i was once so excited about. Something to ponder.

Whatever you decide, you've made so much progress. You are an inspiration to the rest of us, not only because of your persistence, but your willingness to try new things (which is funny in a way because you say you don't like change!!)

You will find your next path, whether it's just a little detour off the IF path, or onto a whole other daisy-lined trail.

Hi Linda! Hope you’re well and sorry I haven’t checked in with you for a while. It’s just been a busy week. I got myself a new mobile phone - moving back to an Android - and you wouldn’t believe how exhausting it’s been, figuring everything out and trying to understand the people in the phone shops. (Do you remember when I cried in a phone shop cos I was so confused and stressed?!!!! It’s taken me so much courage to do this...I have nothing left to give!!!). Anyway I totally relate to your plan to try to gossip less. I’m terrible. I use gossip to bond with people. Not only do I say bad things, but I feel rewarded when others laugh at my cruel observations! AND I do mocking impersonations! I’m probably much worse than you...

So happy to hear about your mammogram. Onwards and upwards!

Thank you auto. I think i only like change when its my idea! ☺️

Octavia: good to see you! Im so sorry a out your phone woes. I dont think i vould adapt to an android at this point. Good to know im not the only one with the gossip issues. If nothing else, its making me aware of my behavior and ive cut back a bit. I think i use it to bond too but I dont do voices lol.

Things are going generally okay. We had a really good weekend with social stuff every night and we got stuff done around the house during the day. Doc is almost never around enough for us to tackle our house to do list so this was really nice.

On the downside, sweetpea has been having a hard time. I just felt like something was really off with her so i did the unthinkable, i read her journal. Ive always been v respectful of my kids privacy but just really needed to know what was going on with her. Well it was pretty dark. She’s definitely having a lot of anxiety and self esteem issues. On the upside there wss no mention of sex, alcohol or drugs.

There was some not so nice stuff about me as well but Im assuming it was in a moment of anger. Mostly i was just very worried about her and determined to do everything I can to help her out of her dark space. Shes also very behind on school which is frustrating because she got straight As last semester.

My strategy is to give her extra love and encouragement, get her to be more active snd involved, and to try to get her to spend more time with the family. I really think two weeks at the camp leadership program would be great for her so i think we need to figure out how to just pay for thst no matter what. I also, offered to send her to another school if she thought thst would be helpful. The downside to her small little artsy school is thst theres a lot of angsty, edgey kids in one spot. It can be a little intense at times and theres just no escaping any social conflicts you may be having with someone.

She seemed a bt better these last couple of days. Sunday she spent the day at the patk with some old friends then we cooked dinner together for the family. I know her room and laundry stress her out so helped her do all her laundry and ive been picking up her room each day. I know that sounds like a bit much but i just need to kind of get her out of this slump and then we can go from there. I hope shell be okay. Its such a vulnerable time for kids.

My weight is still up and its a bit upsetting but im hanging in there. Ive been reading Brad Pilon, Eat Stop Eat, and I really like him. Hes very mellow about the whole fasting thing and actually just recommends 1 or 2 24 hr fasts per week. He says if you fast every day , not to fast more than 16 hrs/day. On that note I’ve decided to try his approach and do as follows:

M,W,F -+23/1
T,Th-16/8–2 small plates plus small “dessert” bowl (for yogurt and fruit)
Sat-16/8–sweets okay
Sunday-no fast 3 plates plus dessert

160.7 lbs
21.6%

19/4
Snack; apple, pickle, nuts
Dinner; pasta with grilled veggies, hummus with parsnip fries
Dessert: yogurt, fruit, granola

Exercise: 30 min walk, 30 min weights

Alcohol; 7/13 days
Tv- up to no tv till 11:30

I think maybe I've made this joke before but it is kind of funny that your "dessert" is my "lunch".

So sorry to hear about Sweetpea. The stuff I wrote in my journal as a teenager gives me chills just remembering, so hopefully she is just processing adolescence with the inevitable times of agony. And now that I think of it, that's amazing that your very modern teen keeps a journal! Wow! Introspective girl!

I know that is funny auto. And thanks, sweetpea is doing much better. She’s gotten so much attention from me in the last few weeks & it seems to be paying off. Her mood is much better and she’s taking better care of herself so i just need to keep on it. Now i just have to remember not to start ignoring Rosebud.

Im a little stressed out. Tomorrow we’re supposed to be getting a big bonus check but im worried its not going to be as big as we thought. Im also nervous about our taxes as everyones seem to be going up. We’re also supposed to hear about rosebuds school. If she doesn’t get in, im not sure where shes going to go. She’d planned on going to sweetpeas school but now that sweetpea might move schools, i doubt she’ll want to go there either. We dont really have a plan C. Hopefully everything will work out.

My eating is a mess too. My body is rebelling against all rules. It does not want to fast or keep things in a certain number of plates or follow any other rule. Im pretty sure the best I can do is to not gain anymore weight at this point.

Well my weight was down today so who knows? I know i should just take it day by day but im worried thatll lead to a slippery slope to weight gain. Whatever, Im so over it!

Well Rosebud got into her school of choice for HS next year and shes very excited and so am I. She's also nervous about not being able to handle it but i think she’ll be alright. Sweetpea is still trying to figure out what to do. Her ex best friend is dating her ex boyfriend so that really sucks. Im just glad she’s talking to me about it. She’s got a new boy whose interested in her. At first I thought he was too dorky for her but hes very sweet to her and thats all that matters.

Doc didnt get home till late so no flowers or chocolates for me. Im a little disappointed but I understand. We are taking the girls out to this new vegan place tomorrow. Im pretty excited!

Hi, Linda! I’m glad your daughter got in to the school she wanted. That’s too bad your husband got home too late yesterday. I hope you enjoy the new vegan place!

Hi Linda,
So happy to hear about Rosebud’s success! :) And I think your strategy with Sweetpea is spot on. I think I’ve given my DD more cosseting and pampering since she reached her difficult teen years. I think they need it, and they appreciate it. Putting more love and kindness into a situation is never a bad thing. My DD was feeling anxious tonight. She’s very tired and was feeling a bit breathless and sick. I gave as much reassurance as I could, helped her get to a party and picked her up again. I’ve tried to encourage DD to write a journal, and sometimes she does. When I’m tidying her room I occasionally find cute, very misspelled journal entries from years ago!

Hope you have a great weekend.

You are probably on your family date to the new vegan restaurant right now!! Kind of a belated Valentine's celebration, yes? I'm sure you'll have fun!

Whoop-whoop about Rosebud's school! That girl is a rock star.

Re: Sweetpea, yuck about the dealing with the friend/ex issue. That's like a teen's nightmare, ya know? But as I think about it I find myself waffling - should she leave a school she likes because of those losers? Maybe - stuff like that is THAT big of deal and perhaps she can spread her wings without having to deal with seeing them everyday. But part of me wants to see her flip those losers the bird and find her own path without them for the last couple years of high school. Tough stuff.

Thanks Octavia! You sound like a really nuturing mom and i agree that those teens do need us more than ever. Im glad i can be there for them.

Auto, so the restaurant called and they had to delay the opening off their restaurant till next Wednesday. They were very apologetic and offered us $100 of our next meal. Doc isnt feeling well anyway so i guess it’s alright. We’re supposed to go to dinner, the ballet and stay the night at a hotel tomorrow night for our Valentine’s Day celebration. Hopefully he’ll be feeling better.

I agree about Sweetpea and shes starting to come around to that way of thinking. I think she just needed to know she wasnt stuck. I want her to know theres always a way out. But shes been talking to one of her teachers about it and realizes the grass is always greener. The teacher was also telling her how colleges like getting kids from her school because of their unique experience. I also told her how social dynamics can change very quickly at this age. Im hoping two weeks off for spring break will help mellow everything out. Hopefully itll all work out.

For some reason i just cannot seem to get past 17 hrs lately. Im guessimg all that “dirty “ fasting messed up my fat adaption. Anyway right now i feel like i just want to be under 155 lbs and Ill just learn to be happy where Im at. Ive been watching my big fat fabulous life and its pretty inspiring. If she can be happy with her 370 lb self, certainly, i can love my 155 lb self, no? I have to say doing the weights is helping with my body image. Im a mesomorph so put on muscle pretty easily and i really enjoy feeling strong (thanks for the suggestion auto).

On sad news, i found out an old friend who i havent spoke to in a few years passed away in her sleep last night. Its so shocking because she was only 54 years old. I guess she had heart problems from overdoing it on her asthma medications. Its very sad and a little bit of a wake up call although i dont really know what id do differently with my life. Maybe have a career but i think that ship has sailed. I do think about how much time she wasted on thinkimg about her weight. She used to go to Mexico and bring back weightloss medicine. Anyway, its sad.

I have to get up early tomorrow to take rosebud to her volunteer gig. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Hi Linda! not my business but if you desire a career I think you could give it a chance, or at least give it a thought. It would be such a waste if you didn't!
Maybe politics? you sounded very happy of the manifestation you organized. It doesn't need to look in any particular way, but we need good politicians and possibly women. Men are brilliant and awesome but politics needs the special caring talents and heart-intelligence of women. I read just last month an article in a magazine, written by no less than the Dalai Lama, that was all about the fact that he thought that the world should be governed by women and if that should happen we're going to be ok. I think he's quite right and also, it was very nice of him to say something like that.

I am reading with interest your comments about teenagers as my son is 14, although being a boy can make a big difference in the mannerisms. I tend to think of him as very strong as he's preternaturally intelligent, but that's such a misconception. Just before, we had a teenager version of our old cuddling sessions and he looked all bouncy right after.

Hi, Linda! Sorry about your friend. :( Lifting weights should definitely help with your body composition, especially as you put on muscle. Plus, lifting weights has so many other health benefits. I love to lift weights, and I would much rather do that than do cardio. My older son will be a teenager in less than 2 years, which is hard to believe!

I agree with Margot....I went back to school at 49 after years in retail management. I just couldn’t face another holiday season of stress , long hours and the ongoing drama of managing minimum wage employees.

So at 58 I now have 8 years in my best job ever! I work as an executive assistant in a huge hospital system , with fantastic co- workers and lovely benefits. It’s never too late

That's great to hear! Both of your girls sound so gifted and I think it is AMAZING that they have specialized schools in your area to cater to their very different interests. Of course, I'm sure that makes lots of driving for you!
I'm guessing all that “dirty “ fasting messed up my fat adaption.
Can you remind me again about this - if I remember right you mean you think maybe you had too much sugar or processed foods during your window?

And, just a virtual-high-five on that low body fat %/fantastic muscle mass. My Peter Attia weekly email was about "Ketones, fasting, and muscle loss" and how it's believed the ketones themselves are what preserve muscle mass, along with the amino acid leucine. He also mentioned from his own fasts that lifting weights during the fast helped to preserve muscle mass the best.

Very sorry to hear about your friend. That is sad and shocking and can really do something to our sense of security.

Sorry about your friend I had a colleague younger than I was dying over the summer one year. It was very sobering.

Is that 21.5 under your weight your body fat? The media and athletic models can make it seem like we need to be a lot lower but that’s a very good body percentage for a woman. I’m in my correct BMI range but mine is about 25%. I don’t see that changing by a whole lot because I’m not willing to commit to the kind of diet and exercise it would take to Change it drastically. I haven’t even been able to get myself to do the minimum exercise! You do so much better with that.

It seems so early to have to make that decision about a camp in the summer for the girls, but I guess that’s how it’s done. It must be a blast.

Keep up the good work! I know in the day-to-day moments can be hard to remember how far we all come.

Hi Linda, very sorry to hear about your friend.
I barely check in at the moment but when I do I enjoy reading your thread as you are such a thoughtful and resilient writer, never shy of diagnosing a problem and finding a solution. Your girls are lucky! I think you would be fantastic in politics if that is what you want. Sadly, I have no advice on fasting at all.

Thank you all for the nice comments about my friend. 💙

Margot: I am still doing some political stuff but I really have no desire to run for anything. it’s possible if I put a lot of work into that my volunteer stuff could lead to a paid position but I just dont think i want to go that route. Who knows, maybe I’ll figure it out at some point.

Heather: I definitely prefer weights right now too. I feel like teenage boys might be a little easier but it’s probably a case of the grass is always greener.

Staffy: that’s awesome! I wish i could figure the career/job piece out but just been very elusive thus far.

Auto: yes, its a lot of driving. That's the hardest part but Its a great opportunity for them. So the “dirty” fasting is a bit of a stickimg point for certain ppl but a pure clean fast is consuming only water, black tea or black coffee. No artificial sweeteners or flavors and no cream or milk of any kind. Also no gum or mints. The theory is that all of these things have the potential of raising your insulin and therefore kick you out of your fast. So e people are less strict and say heavy cream is okay because fat doesnt raise insulin and still theres a few ppl that even allow artificial sweetener. I did clean fasting for over a year then started experimenting with a dirty fast mostly because i was annoyed at the fanatical stance of the clean fasters. In the end i have to admit fasting is much easier if I fast cleanly but really everyone probably responds slightly differently.

Oolala: so great to hear from you! Yup that percentage is my body fat yet my weight still puts me in the overweight category which is annoying. I think I may have to compromise a little and on my weight loss goal. The old bmi chart says 152 lbs would put in the normal range and I actually feel pretty darn good there so maybe thats what I’ll shoot for at least for now. You’re right its good to remember ive kept 50 + lbs off for a good while and thsts something to be proud of.

Eschano: thanks so much for your kind words. I know you have your hands full right now with your little ones! Thanks flr stopping by!

We had a really nice weekend although the hotel room was ridiculously overpriced for what got. The hotel was nice though and the restaurant was super yummy. The ballet was beautiful but then monday I realized doc gave me whatever sickness he had. I’ve been on the couch ever since.

Soooo..kayla suddenly announced she's shutting down her fb group and being the natural organizer I volunteered to start a new fasting fb group for everyone. We already have over 200 members and it's going really well. I just think it’s funny that i think of myself as such an introvert yet i keep finding myself in these leadership roles.

We decided to go ahead and enroll the kids in camp. It was a big chunk of money but it’ll be great for the kids and will give us a nice break. Im still tryimg to decide if i shluld use this time to relax or do some serious decluttering?

I decided to do daily challenges on my fb group and today we did 23/1. It definitely helped to push me so maybe this fb group will be good for me.

22.5/1.5
155.9 lbs (yay!)
21.2% fat

Dinner: falafel, hummus, baba ganoush, salad
Dessert: 1 froyo bar, lolipop, coconut water

Goals: I reached my 13 sober day goal for the month! I wonder if its going to be a lot harder next month when im not sick. I gave up on the gossip goal and i let myself watch tv while Ive been sick but hopefully tomorrow i can do something other than sit on the couch.

I used to be very active in the Delay Dont Deny groups but have to admit that the new year's crop of newbies drove me away. :P I still read the advanced group and really admire Gin's management style.

Soooo super duper frustrated with my weight. I really want to just stop focusing on weightloss but its so hard. Its almost like i need someone to give me permission to or something which is ridiculous but seriously i think its just not going to happen for me right now. Im going to try to focus on being good at fasting and building strength and cooking delicious food and on hey maybe just on being a good person. What a novel idea.

The weather is insane. It rained for two days straight which is vety abnormal for Phoenix. And it frickened hailed so much that it looked like it snowed in my backyard. Crazy!

Tomorrow is my cookbook club’s first meeting. Yup, I organized that too. I think I have some kind of group organizing addiction or something. Anyway, it should be fun. I just hope i have time to get everything ready as i have to drive downtown to take Rosebud to her volunteer thing in the morning. Since its so far, I usually hang around down there. We shall see.

Ate a crazy amount. Haven’t exercised all week due to illness.

This post provides permission for lpearlmom to stop worrying about her weight loss and enjoy the beautiful body she has right now.
You have to stop making me cry auto! ☺️ But seriously thank you. You're such a kind person.

Heather: Would be so nice to focus on something else but then again im not sure what thatd be.

The cookbook dinner was really fun! But i drank waaaaayyy too much. and ate a fair amount as well. Continued to eat a lot yesterday and today too. Feeling in total rebellion mode. Not sure what to do but ride it out for a bit.

On the upside, sweetpea is like a gazillion times happier these days. Rosebud is sick though and feeling stressed about school. I guess this is just life. Hopefully she can stay home tomorrow and rest up.

Thanks for checking on me Heather! Things are not going so well eating/weight wise. Im fasting but then eating a lot a lot in my window. I keep telling myself tomorrow ill do better but it doesnt happen. I think having the group is actually adding undo pressure on myself to lose more weight. I stupidly started this 100 day omad challenge and now im feeling badly that i cannot stick to it. The worst part is Im having bingey behavior and i havent done that in a long time. My weight is creeping up and not sure how to get a handle on it. Honestly id love to just go back to NoS but am worried Ill regain the weight i lost on IF. What a pickle Im in.

Everything else is good though. Financially things are on an upswing, the girls are both happy and thriving, marriage good, social life excellent etc.

I hope i can figure out this last piece of the puzzle. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Linda - I don't think I told you that my hubby is doing OMAD now on weekdays. It is such a natural fit for him. He loves it and doesn't really want to take days off, but I've convinced him to take regular S Days so we can have big breakfasts (very sneaky of me since my motivation is mostly that he makes those big breakfasts that I love).
Now that I'm thinking of it though, I guess if I were ever to have the gumption for intermittent fasting I would take my S Days for a breather.

Oh that’s cool auto! Is he doing 23/1 or a little more flexible about it? Ive been taking extended windows on sundays but you do have to be careful because it can make the next day really difficult. I try to do at least 16/8.

Today was pretty good. I stuck to my window but feel like I ate kind of a lot. Its so weird because at 160 lbs Im feeling chubby but at 157 lbs I was feeling good. How does 3 lbs make such a big difference?

160.8 lbs
20.9 % fat

Snack: pb & banana smoothie
Dinner: enchilada casserole, chips & guacamole
Dessert: yogurt, berries, 3 froyo bars

Exercise: 30 mins weights, walk doggies

I got 16 sober days last month but have since lowered my goal to 14 sober days per month. Seems more doable. Ive got 8 so far.

Impressive!! I have had an alcohol-fest this month. End of the quarter seems to do this to me.

I'm not sure what Sexy is doing, lol. He seems to want to just have one big meal and then not eat anything after that. But I think maybe he has more food after dinner (chips & salsa or something) sometimes. I'm not sure if that's planned, haha. But anyway he is feeling good and (being a guy) has already lost a few pounds.

You're sounding a bit perkier; glad to hear more of a smile in your voice.

Hi Linda,
Glad to hear life’s going well, and I hope this tricky phase passes soon, where eating’s concerned. Maybe nothing works forever....maybe we have to keep on renewing our methods, tweaking and adapting according to how we feel and what results we’re getting. I’m sure you’ll come up with a new plan, something that really works for you, your body and life at this particular point.

I too find that three pounds makes a big difference to how I feel. Other people can’t see it, though! Anyway, keep smiling. Always good to catch up with you! X

Octavia: thanks for the encouragement!

Was super hungry again today. I had to white knuckle it to get to 20/4 and my weight is going the wrong way. Frustrated but not giving up. Maybe, probably its homrmonal.

Sweetpea wss being a little moody today but she got through it. I swear she’s much sweeter when her boyfriend is around. Oh well, they’re both going on a sleepover tomorrow night.

Linda, I really feel for you. Have you thought about having a medical check up, could it be a thyroid problem?

Failing that my thoughts would turn to are you eating enough of what your body needs. Hunger is our bodies way of asking for what it needs for survival, denying it will have an impact.

What are froyo bars?

Hi Linda,
Glad to see you're doing well. I didn't read all the back story but saw this and it reminded me that when I gave up alcohol it totally impacted my ability to stick to no-s. Perhaps it's also effecting your fasting. Alcohol is often used to "take the edge off" and I had to figure out why I needed my edges to be removed. ;) Once I figured that out, I saw great improvement in my attitude.

Best of luck to you on your journey

Hi Soprano, I know, it’s tough. I did just get my check up and all my bloodwork looked good. Froyo bars are Greek frozen yogurt bars from Costco. Only 100 calories each but still 3 might be too many. 😊

Hi ginger! Yeah , the wine can help but I really don’t want to be drinking every day. I lowered my goal to 14 days/ mos and think that’s doable.

I’m actually down a lb today which makes me happy because I was starting to feel like my weight was constantly going up. It took me so long to get out of the 160s so mentally it’s a bit hard to be back here. But today I wasn’t fighting hunger at all so I think I just needed to get fat adapted again. Too much time off from fasting as well all that dirty fasting. Gin Stephens was right after all. 🤦🏼‍♀️

Anyway, I’m feeling back on track. My friend insists that because my fat % is so low, I don’t need to lose anymore weight and I’m at goal. Not sure about that but it’s a nice thought. I really just want to get under 155 lbs but that’s not far off right? I got this!

...that’s great feedback from your friend! And she could well be right. I haven’t dared do a fat weigh-in .... my scale does have this function, but the last time I checked, a few years ago, my fat weight was really high and dreadful to behold!!! You are probably very fit and slim at this weight!

I may be late for this, but I also give you permission to shift your attention away from weight loss. (I always have.) But I doubt my permission will do it for you. I think you're right about the pressure from the fb group, unlucky though that is. Heck, it's a pressure just living in white female culture land. I'm not immune, but I fight it!

As I tried to say before, 21.5 % may be part of the issue. It's pretty low by average standards. Maybe not dieter standards or certain body type standards, or media standards. Your body may really like that ratio. Sure, being fat-adapted may help. but there's no telling if it will make your body think it's okay to get leaner. Or maybe it will. Oh, I dunno.

I wish more ease for you! I'd certainly take your BMI to have a happy relationship as you have. But it doesn't work like that, does it?

Wow, a cooking group. I just made a table of contents for my hodge podge of recipes and realized I'd never made even one of them. I guess it helps to have to cook for others.

Octavia: It’s nice to see that low number, but I still think I have plenty of fat to lose.

Oolala: I know so much pressure everywhere. Not likely, Ill be able to give up the desire to weigh less anytime soon. I sure do admire those that can though. I am happy that the group is going well though. It feels good to provide a safe & supportive environment for people.

The Cookbook club is really fun. I highly recommend it. This article gave me the idea: https://www.seriouseats.com/2015/10/how ... -club.html

Today was pretty good. I didn’t get nearly as much done though as I wanted. My friend called me last minute to meet for coffee. I had to tell her no the last two times she asked me to do something though so felt like I needed to say yes. Im always surprised she wants to be friends with me as we’re so different. Shes a divorced conservative trauma surgeon and Im well, not. I enjoy our visits but she always stresses me out about money especially college. Shes managed to save 100k for each of her daughter’s. Lucky.

A pretty good day. Had an activist meeting in the morning then took Rosebud to her volunteer gig in the afternoon. We were all going to go to dinner but Doc got called in so i just took the girls plus sweetpeas bf. The show must go on. We have tickets to a spring training game tomorrow. I sure hope doc can make it.

My weight is finally under 160 again. Let’s hope this downward trend continues.

Omgosh; ate way too much today. Oh well I guess thats what days off are for.

Today was good and Im just feeling very appreciative of my family today. So fortunate to have such fantastic kids and a loving hubby. Im proud of the stable home we’ve created for our girls. These feelings are always so bittersweet though when I see how fleeting life can be. Just found out that two of the Parkland survivors killed themselves. Life is just soul-crushing sometimes. I swear it’s a miracle so many of us get out of bed in the mornng let alone get up and be productive with a smile on our faces. Sorry, to be so morbod but life is really tough and i know that’s ironic as i say that from my king sized bed, in my 5k sqare ft house swimmimg in all my white privilege but it just is no matter who you are.

Anyway enough of that. We did have a nice day at the baseball game and later we came home and Sweetpea and her boyfriend made dinner. Was so nice. Tomorrow the girls go back to school and it’s back to full time chauffeuring. Will miss having the girls home but will be nice to have some quiet time again too.

Auto: oh I didn’t mention it? 😊 Yes, she has a new & improved bf. He’s very sweet & very kind to her. I’m happy for her.

Whose: I know, I know. We weren’t looking for a house that big. Just worked out like that.

Well kinda took a break from everything today—the news, fasting , and even just let myself have the tv on. Boy, did I eat a lot again though. Not sure what’s going on with me but decided I needed to just do a reset so starting a 42 hr fast tonight.

I realized that I’m having trouble staying motivated because I’m making no progress on my weight loss. I think the answer might be to take things up a notch so I will actually start to see results again and therefore able to stay motivated.

I’m going to throw in some longer fasts, watch my carb and sugar intake and up my exercise a bit. If I could just start losing 1 lb/week that’d be amazing. Hopefully I won’t burn out but it’s worth a shot. I’m just really tired of being at a standstill or worse to be in gaining mode which seems where I’m headed if I don’t take action.

161.9 lbs
Day off

Breakfast: eggs with cheese & avocado, fruit
Snack: nuts & sf chai
Snack: smoothie, chickpea puffs, popcorn
Dinner: veggie burrito
Dessert: 1 piece of chocolate

Sooo much food! 😱

Exercise: 30 min dog walk, 20 mins weights

Tomorrow doc & I are supposed to get up early and ride our bikes. We shall see!
