automated eating tracker

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

Pinkie - we had so much fun last night skating! It was really great; remembering it makes me smile.

Jen - YES! Your description of days without alcohol is spot on: keep on accomplishing things - going to bed earlier - unable to relax. Those all describe my days without alcohol - LOL, my YEAR without alcohol. Actually the relaxing does get better with time, but the early bedtime is a constant and getting more accomplished.

Eschano - Hello hello! Thank you for swinging by although I'm a bit chagrined that of course here I am talking about alcohol again. It's my kryptonite. Along with Doritos. And btw, this time around the alcohol-free thing feels ... to be coming from the spiritual focus I've been cultivating of late. I'm not sure yet; it all feels a bit nebulous and not ready to articulate, though. Something about using my limited time on this earth more effectively, and I have too much to accomplish to waste hours on the couch drinking. But that sounds kind of harsh; I'm all for balance, and downtime, and not pushing too hard to climb ladders and all that. So I need to be patient because I think something is happening inside me that is like a little seed and I don't understand it yet.

Yesterday while casting around for things to do I made some decent choices, although it involved shopping so I'm not sure if that was just replacing one dopamine hit for another...... anyhoo, what I bought were some office supplies: lots of stickers to use in my journal and in my daily encouragement letters; colored mechanical pencils - yes, apparently there is such a thing, and for a teacher like me, such a new find is always fun. I have never been much for using pencils, being a sharpie-preferring teacher, but since I have switched to making my videos digitally, I find myself using pencils as I research and take notes in preparation for the video. So some colored mechanical pencils are a super fun find. We'll see how they perform. I also bought these little loops that tape down to a notebook so the pen/pencil is always handy - I need three - one for my research notebook for work stuff, and 1 for my habit tracker, and 1 for my journal. Oh, and I also bought a few magnetic bookmarks - another new item for me that I'm not sure how it will work, but it seems fun to try it out and I'm desperate for bookmarks and tired of using ugly pieces of scratchpaper.

On an entirely leisure note, I'm reading a very fun book called Winter World. I don't know that I can recommend it yet because I'm not very far into it, but I enjoy the fast pace and complete escapism (it's about an ice age covering the world because of aliens blocking out our solar energy.... LOL... so yes, space travel involved). Back to what Jen had said, having an escapism book (short chapters, improbable plotline, and nothing like real life) is a good solution to the "needing to be doing something" and "wanting to go to bed too early" issues of a non-alcohol existence. :-)

Glad you are enjoying your book! I have been headfirst into the world of escapist books these days and its so nice to find one that you really like and enjoy.

Omg I LOVE office supplies! I really have a problem. I think I own every color sharpie that exists.

Keep up the good work! You’ve got this.

Auto, looks like you are getting back into your groove. I have to tell you about these erasable pens I have. They come in about 12 colors and I LOVE them! I use them during staff meetings and to do my lesson planning. I will find a link later in case you want to check them out. :) Have a great day.

Alene - YES, I'd love the link for your colored and erasable pens. :-)

Zoid - some of my co-workers and I joke that we could form a weekly group where we discuss and show off our favorite office supplies. :-) It really is a joy in this life of ours!

Ladybird - yep, I totally think we all find something to help us relax. I guess the ultimate life hack is finding something that helps us relax AND is good for us. Hmmmm, tough stuff! Short of that, finding at least "neutral" relaxing hacks would be nice!

Pinkie - do it! Get the stickers! Mine arrived and I'm loving them! The toughest part is deciding when I get to put one in my stuff and when I should really give it to someone in one of my letters. I guess there are worse problems to have!

Morning walk (in a downpour) completed. Took both dogs. I'm getting better at handling them both together - well it probably also helps that Flowerpup is over a year now and not QUITE as crazy. ;-)
Also have a reservation for weight-lifting tonight. I'll be perfectly frank - weight-lifting is not fun for me, but it is critical for maintenance of my muscle mass and bone density - and if I listen to a podcast and get in and out of there in 20 minutes, I can do this.

Auto, you enabler you! I have a few in my cart that I am considering. :D

Also yay for you for the 120's on the scale!

I don't love weight lifting either, but I do it because of concerns about bone mass... not as frequently as I should though. Good for you for getting in there and doing it!

Yay for the 120’s! That’s awesome!

I used to do heavy lifting back before kids. We have a squat rack with a weight bench and everything in our basement, so I have no excuse. I’ve been doing a calisthenic program, but I have zero desire to stick with it. So anyway, I hear you on the weight lifting. It’s super important, but I much prefer cardio.

Zoid, I've greatly enjoyed a bodyweight program called "GMB" - I've done their Elements, Vitamin, and Integral Strength programs. Have you heard of them? It's kind of like gymnastics, in a way. I like it because I get to move around in fun ways, rolling on the ground, doing handstands, hopping, etc. I keep meaning to get back into it, but my dogs go crazy when I am on the ground. That is just too tempting for them. :-)

Pinkie - Yep, bone and muscle mass are where it's at. Over and over again, I come back to that for living healthy and well.

And Linda - of course, it was a dip. But a lovely dip! ;-) A few more "bows" and perhaps I'll stay in that "decade" as we put it sometimes. 8)

Great news re the 120s patience it will soon be more than a dip :)

I used to love weights but really hate gyms these last few years. I found some good toning and strength can be developed with yoga. Also great for suppleness.

Glad no news has helped so much! This morning after I did my writing I was all peaceful and feeling pretty good and then my husband texted me a news article and was all agitated about it and I noticed a huge difference in our attitudes and moods. He was upset and angry, and I was happy. And he was working on getting mine down as well! I want to see the studies 30 years from now about how the news has changed and what it has done to our mental health. It's noticeable! I don't look at the news on purpose anymore and I am much happier for it too.

Been taking a news break too. It’s been nice! I remember a book I read about helicopter parenting and it said the news was partly to blame. Even though crime had gone down, it felt like it had gone up because of the way we are bombarded with the news 24/7. It starts to feel like it’s all happening in our backyard. It also pointed out that child abduction was pretty rare and it usually was a family member doing it like an ex spouse. Having the facts did help me relax but of course we still have to take precautions.

I was originally feeling guilty for ignoring the news. Since I figure my white privilege is what allows me to live in a bubble if I want. A POC can’t drive down the street without being reminded of the current injustice in the world but I realized listening to the news does nothing to improve the world. Instead I plan to chose a cause or two and contribute whatever positive change I can to it. Probably just being kind to our fellow beings on a day to day basis and speaking up when we see injustice around us is the most realistic way we can make a difference.

Regardless if we are depressed and angry, we aren’t going to be much use to anyone so I’m on team burn the news and really glad it’s helping all of us! 💜💜

Auto, Yes keep on keeping on with no news is good news!

I hope you get a chance to relax this weekend and put down a few balls.

Linda, I know what you mean, but I realized that I was not helping the world by having my mental health be impacted to such a negative degree so I came to a very similar conclusion as you. :)

Yay for Team Burn the News!

L: protein bar (this is an S day treat, because I can actually go crazy with these and eat them non-stop. I have no idea why - I think it's the chewy texture that I like. My kids don't like them so they sit in the pantry tempting me....)
D: yogurt w/berries
dessert - a bit of froyo with the boys after skating
collagen proteins w/electrolytes

rest day entirely planned. Glad I did, and now I still have plenty of rest day in front of me.

So remember how I got my IUD out 2.5 weeks ago? Well, I kid you not ladies - my sex drive has increased since then. There are always other factors, right? So not entirely sure that's what it is but I'm thinking so.... my body is absolutely more easily responsive! What a nice treat! 8)

BTW, sex life with two very aware boys in my house is not easy. We have a decent lock on our bedroom door, thank goodness. LOL.

That is great Auto! I kind of struggle with low libido and have had to work on just trying to go with the flow when my dh wants sex. It works for the most part because I do enjoy it once things get going. I noticed once I graduated from school that I felt much more in the mood more often though. Our teenager shares a wall with us, but luckily it's heavily insulated, and we have a lock on our door. It is tricky with kids at home!

Soprano - March is looking up! :-) And spring is coming!!

Pinkie - funny how not having the massive stress of school would make you more in the mood for sex! LOL! of course, right?

Ladybird - I have enjoyed skating since I was a little girl! I really enjoy the freeing feel; it's almost like flying! And although I have never been comfortable dancing in public, for some reason I feel I can "dance" a little on my skates and not think a thing about who might be watching.

What kind of skates do you have? Do you use old-school roller skates or roller blades? I used to be big into skating ( as I think I mentioned) but I used rollerblades. I think old-school skates are way harder!

Also meant to mention, I love protein bars too! They are such a treat. I had to stop buying them after a while because they call to me. LOL

Hi Auto. So glad that things are "spicing up," for you in the bedroom. I too have noticed a decline in my libido at my age, 54. I've been thinking of ways to get things a bit more fired up too. :)

What kind of protein bars do you like? I love them too but also have to watch my intake. My favorites are IQ bars, Perfect Bars, and RX bars.

I'm so glad that you're able to get out and go skating! I used to go every week when I was in grade school. There was a place called Skate King in the Bellevue area that was the place to be!

I'm so glad that you are feeling happier and more peaceful overall. Have a great Tuesday!

Pinkie - I used quads (old-school) growing up, then switched to roller blades in college, and just very recently (like last October!) bought my first pair of quads. It was amazing to go back to them; I'm much more able to spin and turn than I could on my roller blades. I'd forgotten about the differences. My boys both much-prefer roller blades, and Challenger even has speed skates now (they look ridiculous and give him terrible blisters, but he is vain about them!)

Linda - I decided to give the scale the cold shoulder this morning, actually.  I'm sure he'll want me back by tomorrow.

Alene - they are Kirkland protein bars (21 g protein, 15 g fiber, 2 gram sugar) - Sexy buys them, supposedly for Challenger, but I'm the only one that ends up giving in and eating them.... they are a good example of the "pull" of processed foods for me. It's like there is no "off" switch for me with processed foods. In any case, I've decided they are worthwhile S day treats for me! And I heard the sad tail about the Bellevue rink closing, I think, from some of the locals at my place. I think my rink is one of (or the last) in the state.

Just dropping in. All in all, things sound good! You have such a full life. Funny about the protein bars- others buy them, you eat them. I can't use that excuse, though sometimes I would like that problem. I had had plenty of "bad" experiences with bars before No S, and Reinhard's diatribe helped, though one year I found some at a local discount store that had just the right mix for me at the time. I actually was able to mete a box of two dozen of those out to myself over a few months. The store stopped carrying them and that was that. It's funny to me how often once something isn't available any more, I hardly think about it. (Though there was a kind of whole wheat garlic bread and some mint chocolate candies that Trader Joe's used to have and I missed them for a loooong time. Boy I haven't thought about them for even longer! My new love is soft dried apricots, but I think I might start "seeing" them less often soon. The thrill is fading.)

Thanks for helping to keep the flame burning!

Oh right! Quads... Yes they do have more maneuverability which is why I think they are harder for me! I have had some spills on those. I even lost a tooth on a school field trip to the skating rink after a fall! :D

Hope you are doing well today!

Then I scrolled back and realized you were talking about your scale! I am still laughing to myself over here.

Wow Auto, look at you with the 128! I am happy for you! Do you feel like your eating has been more consistent lately? Also, a salmon burger sounds very interesting. Always looking for ways to make and eat fish since my entire family pretty much hates it.

I have been serving salmon with sweet red peppers, onion courgette and couscous. Just fry everything, mix couscous with hot water then add to pan, lovely with a splash of sweet chilli sauce.

Pinkie - I buy salmon burgers at Costco! Easy peasy! The kids basically consider them like hamburgers, so it's a nice way to get their Omega-3's up. Tuna melts are another way to get the kids eating fish, which I consider brain and mood food! At first they didn't like the tuna melts, so I basically just made grilled cheese sandwiches, but over time I've added tiny bits of tuna fish to their meal and they are eating it now, although I still don't pile it on like I'd like to.

And Pinkie - yes I think my eating has been WAY more consistent in the past month. The trick was doing some serious soul-searching and cutting out the media and news, and then eventually alcohol (although I'm still not sure how I made that leap to no alcohol this second time, but here I am). My eating was spiralling out of control for many months, (for me, I know on my thread it might not look terrible, but I gain weight VERY easily and don't tolerate fun foods without a pretty quick balloon-up and blood sugar fiasco) and I can honestly say it was almost entirely caused by my negative attitude about COVID and politics. I have removed those things from my life. They made me cranky, unkind, filled with resentment, and many other ugly things. And then I would drink wine to try to feel better, but of course that is no solution for an unhappy heart.

Even more Pinkie! - You'll laugh at this - I just had to run outside because it's garbage/recycling morning and my stuff was blowing around in the street - all those empty yogurt containers I have LOL!!

Soprano - my blood sugars are super stable right now, which is pretty typical when I eat on-point. If I have something fun, they shoot up to near-diabetic levels, though, and my fasting numbers are still technically too high. I have come to a place of relative peace, though. I'm doing the best I can, and to be any stricter than I am now I feel would compromise my nutritional status (I'm particularly thinking of my yogurt) and/or my long-term food satisfaction. I think if you are seeing them all over the place, it most commonly can be directly tied to your dinner contents and timing of the previous night (in my experience, anyway). It's likely that your previous days meals vary significantly in carb content and that would explain the variations you are seeing in the morning.

Soprano, I don't know if my kids would eat it, but that sounds delicious to me! I will try it.

Oh cool Auto, I will see if I can find any at our not Costco. We don't have Costco in Walmart country. :( Great idea about the tuna melts! My oldest HATES tuna but I bet my middle child would go for it.

I am glad you figured out what was causing inconsistency and negativity in your life and your eating patterns. It really is amazing what a difference it makes.

LOL at the yogurt containers blowing all around the street! (I mean, I'm sorry you had to deal with that.. :D) Spring is full of fun adventures like that I guess. Our recycling has a flip-top lid but the wind has no trouble whipping those babies open and knocking the whole container down!

Thanks auto, glad your sugars are stable. I currently only take a blood sugar test once a week. The last one which had gone up was the morning after a low carb day. Evening meal was early and was an omelette with sausage bacon and red pepper, hence my surprise....

I'm hoping it is just a dawn effect

So great to hear that you’re getting to a good place again. You seem to be finding that good balance between health & pleasure. I’m really glad you’re keeping the yogurt as it’s something you seem to enjoy so much. My girls love tuna melts and salmon too but they’re both pescatarians so fish has never been an issue. I think when they were really young I’d make them things like maple/mustard salmon and theyd love it. My youngest actually used to beg me to buy cod which I’d bake with Asian flavors but my kids are weird. They even tried snails when we were in Vegas. 😊.

Anyway, you’re doing great and awesome you’re ready to cut the alcohol out yet. I’m not quite there yet.

Ah thanks Soprano. I finally forced myself back on here this morning! I have been eating too much this week, that's for sure, but I also feel bad when I don't comment on everyone's threads!! I feel like I'm not supporting others enough. So, crazy human that I am, I think I procrastinated opening up the forum page this week!!! Weird, I know.

I have really been buckled down with work. Not only do I have still have my contract work constantly looming, but I head back to teaching in 3 weeks. I am teaching an extra class for some reason too (long story but my own fault), and I'm trying to get everything ready. Of course I'm tweaking my set-up, as well, so I need to run that by my dept chair for approval of my out-of-the-box grading plan.

A few days of chips and dip and my weight has zoomed right back up to 132. Oh, well. Back at it. I swear this particular few days of eating felt distinctly like self-punishment or self-sabotage. [UPDATE - well, just started my first period since I had my IUD removed!!!! LOL, I think maybe now I understand why I wanted to eat chips all week.  ] First period in over 12 years!

Anyway, I want to apologize ahead of time for possibly not being as supportive on others threads for the next few months. On the other hand, if I get "procrastinatey" at my work, I can also see myself spending too much time on here!! Ha! We shall see.

Oh, one other reason I haven't been on here of late is that I continue to spurn any internet browsing (other than looking up cardiogenic shock, lol, for today's video - hey, science don't count!). So essentially, I am doing research and writing and recording from about 9am - 4pm, and then when I close up shop to get dinner started, I put my computer away and only use my kindle in the evening hours. I might grab my phone for Marco Polo or texting, but I never use everyday systems on my phone like many of you cool cucumbers (that's why I never can insert fun emojis!). There's something about typing on my phone for anything longer than a text that I find burdensome and so I never do it.

Friday, March 12 - going to try to stay on plan today! Which means no tortilla chips and this chipotle dip that my husband has been buying. And no microwave popcorn with Creator. And no protein bars! I ate the last one yesterday, thank goodness.

Eating
B: coffee w/cream
L: (will be) yogurt w/berries
--for all the cravings I anticipate today, (I will) guzzle milk and ride the wave--
D: (will be) leftover steak and chicken from dinners this week
(will have) collagen proteins and electrolytes

Moving
This morning I haven't walked yet - hopefully soon. The rest of this week I was on point with good walks, even sometimes 2X a day.

Wow what an update! I know I wanted lots of junky food right before my missing period showed up, but I can't imagine 12 years!

That sounds exciting about returning to teaching! Are you going to be in the classroom? Sounds like you are super busy!

Oh boy, you’ve got a lot in your plate! I sure hope you don’t feel obligated to come on here every day? Some days im just too tired or not feeling it so ill skip a day or even a few. It should be enjoyable and helpful. I also feel badly when i dont have time to comment on others threads but I don’t think anyone takes it personally. Let’s all just agree to cut each other some slack in this area. We have enough to feel guilty about in our lives!

12 years? Wow, I didn’t realize an iud kept one’s period away? But yes the cravings make a lot of sense. And chips and dip. Well your talking my love language. Im sure that weight will go right back down. I can gain as much as 5 lbs with my period.

Hope today goes well! 💜

Linda - this thread has always been enjoyable for me, for sure - probably why I've stuck with it so long! I just seem to be in a season where I have my days filled with lots of other good things that are serving a similar sort of introspective purpose as this thread does for me.

I'm already annoyed at having a period again.

My favorite posts are the ones people write on their thread though & I’m always bummed when I log on & it’s been quiet on the boards!! I hope the next few months go well & that you find newfound passion for your job!! Sometimes a break will do that for you :D

I ate weird stuff at odd times over the weekend. And last week, I truly didn't want to eat any protein. I find that interesting from a biology perspective.

So here I am at Monday, March 15th. Today is HappyHerder's 5th birthday and my parents' 58th wedding anniversary.

I have two full-time jobs, essentially, but the truth is there is no way I can put in the 70+ hours a week that is necessary to keep all the balls in the air. I let the company I contracted for know that my pace will be diminished for the next couple of months.

My classes are smaller than I was expecting, and so that is a nice, but big surprise. I guess enrollment is down significantly at our school. Matches the national trends, I now have learned, but I continue to avoid the news so I wasn't aware.

I've been eating like I haven't eaten in years. I'm up to 138 (BMI 25.2). It's like I'm watching myself gain weight as if I'm watching a science experiment. Sadly, this is what life is like for those of us that tend to gain weight - without constant vigilance in our culture, we gain. I am grateful that I tend to "settle" at a weight that is not too too overweight (Since I was 147 at my heaviest ever, I think about 150 is probably about as heavy as I get eating to utter abandon, although perhaps now that I'm older the upper point is 160 instead.) I'm just speculating on this, but I do think we all have a genetic set-point.

But my weight gain has been fascinating. As I've lamented on this board, all of last spring and summer I was (super slowly) gaining weight (like only a couple pounds over several months, but it was still frustrating) despite eating almost on-point and exercising to perfection (haha perfection). So then I continued loosening the reigns on the types and quantities of food I was eating, but was still exercising as normal. And weight gain got faster. And then, in the last month, I have gained SEVEN pounds. And now I don't even feel like exercising, although I still get out there with the dogs, but my body feels slothful. It's like whatever I eat now, my body hoovers up as fast as it can into my fat cells and then refuses to access any of it to give me that energy bump that motivates me to move more.

The contents of my eating have been pretty awful - a typical day's eating along these lines:
B: coffee w/milk, egg on toast or even a cinnamon roll or donut if they are around
L: still having my yogurt most days, but other days eating these microwaveable burritos
mid-afternoon - usually finding chips, or tortilla chips with this dip that I have been eating like it's cocaine
D: pizza, or some sort of fast food, or maybe a quesadilla
And then ice cream a lot of nights!

Whatever extra calories I have consumed have gone immediately to fat. That is beyond clear to me. And the rate at which my body is storing extra calories accelerated after days/weeks of eating badly. Fascinating. At this point I am certain my body could get up to 145 or 150 within one more month of eating like this.

Some days I wonder if my hormones are a bit out of wack as they adjust to the IUD removal, and that is partially the explanation. But mostly I think I just have been eating too much and "too much" isn't hard to reach for my genetics and metabolic health at the moment.

Oh, and it does bear considering how much not tracking my food/eating has increased my poor eating choices/amounts/snacking, etc. Maybe there's really something to this tracking for me, even after all these years. "tracking" my food essentially meant "planning" my meals and we all know how important I think that is to staying on-plan.

I haven't been testing my blood sugar (like an ostrich with its head in the sand) - I ran out of strips. Maybe I'll order more today. That could be a step in the right direction.

Oh, one other thing to document - joint pain has returned. No real surprise, but good confirmation that there are probably foods (such as gluten, which I normally avoid) that trigger my joint pain. In particular, my elbows & forearms have been hurting. Weird, yes? It's like tennis elbow in both elbows; left one is the worst but it's symmetrical which seriously had me considering rheumatoid arthritis. Of course, RA is probably a reaction to gluten in many people, so there's that.

So I'm back on my thread, but I still have to keep my head down for work until July, so I'm still asking for understanding that I might be woefully behind on others' threads.

Eating
B: coffee w/milk
L: yogurt w/berries (I'll fix it right now so the berries will thaw by lunch - see! coming on here is already helping haha)
D: tuna fish on sourdough bread
fail at bedtime - 2 cookies from a batch Challenger made! Oh well. Still overall a much better day than some have been. I was actually hungry before dinner, which is a good thing.

Have a good day all.

Hi auto! Its nice to see you! You sound like you have been busy! I know what you mean about observing yourself gaining weight almost helplessly like its an experiment you are conducting. I think I too have a setpoint of gain when I eat with abandon. Pre planning and just staying aware for me, writing down what I eat does make a huge difference. I need to get back to that like I was. That is interesting about the joint pain. I hope that eating more according to how you eat when you feel healthy and good will help it. Anyway, it was so great to see you pop in! I hope you have a good weekend!

Thanks for the welcome backs, team! ;-)

Saturday, April 17

Eating
B: coffee w/milk
L: yogurt w/berries
D: tuna on sourdough again. That really hit the spot last night, filled me up, and I think I'll not fix it since it's not broken. I suppose I can't eat tuna every day though. LOL. Maybe I'll switch to sardines. Haha!

Moving
Going to get out there with Flowerpup for a long morning walk (with water for her), then work on a video on DNA replication. Then maybe help Creator with a room project and work in the yard a bit.

Oh, and I'm reading through all the works of C.S. Lewis. I've read a few of them over the years, but now I'm going to go through all of them systematically, altering a fiction with a non-fiction with poetry etc. Has anyone read Till We Have Faces: A Myth Retold? I was sort of blown away by it. Really grabbed me from the first sentence and never let go.

Moving
Nice walk w/Flowerpup early before it gets too hot for her!
Happyherder, despite his massive hairy body, handles the heat much better than she does

As I settle back into some more routined eating, I still have to determine what my S events and S days will look like. For a long time, just having dessert on S days (usually ice cream) and eating a dinner that is more processed worked for me. I think I'll settle on that.

Nice to see you here more again (: I hit a point where I was just sick of trying about 4 years ago (and went with IE which was just “not dieting” for me) Maybe it’s a 40’s thing  I still can’t go all in, but realized boundaries felt better for me too!! You’ve always been so good at boundaries! Maybe you just needed a little break :D

I have not read the works of CS Lewis. I mean, I read all the Chronicles of Narnia, but that's it.

Looks like you are getting back in your groove!

Yes, Jen, I definitely just needed a little break. Even this forum was too much for me to keep up with! I'm feeling more myself now.

Pinkie - I'm finding my groove, but I think this latest weight regain has been the final convincing I needed that these habits I develop will never be completely "automatedeating" as I always have dreamt of them becoming. This is a low-level battle I have to wage for the remainder of my life. It is not the most important battle - far far from that. I have more important battles - my marriage, my children's development of character, my maintenance of friendships, and my peace at work, but the health and strength of my body is a battle worth fighting, even though I wish I didn't have to fight it. I can do a better job at all the more important battles if I am strong and "battle-ready."

Video work on DNA replication continues. Did you know that DNA replication only makes 1 error in every 10^9 nucleotides? That makes me just about fall over. There's all these nanomachines that coordinate the replication of 6 feet of "tangled" strands of DNA, so that you have 12 feet altogether in ONE microscopic cell - like how does that even possibly get packaged up so tightly without making it a hopeless mess? It gives me that feeling of when you're trying to completely take apart and redo a bedroom but you can't remove anything into the hallway while you work.

Hope you don't mind me quoting you, but this just really resonated. I totally agree. I will have to remain somewhat vigilant for the rest of my life. However, by choosing a moderate way of eating, I think the vigilance won't wear me down and become unsustainable.

That DNA thing is crazy! I did not know that.

Pinkie - I guess our goal is to take care of our bodies like we take of our homes. We want it clean and cozy and fun to live in, but not elevated to an importance it shouldn't have! :-)

Jen - yep. My spirit is willing but my flesh is weak!

Golly, still not done with my blood vessels of the heart video. Homestretch today I think. Now I know for sure why I have procrastinated so long on this one. The intricacy of the digital drawing and labeling has been a detail-demanding work the likes of which I have rarely engaged in! The placenta was similarly hard, but I expected that. For this one, the content is not that difficult (how hard can it be to draw blood vessels, right?), so the difficulty of the artwork has surprised me.
