automated eating tracker

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

I'm up in the middle of the night again!
I checked through my journal, because this happened last week, too. Yep - pizza. Last week it was Sunday night, though - and so Monday I had to stagger through the work day on very little sleep. At least tomorrow I don't work, but I do have to drive for a basketball tourney.
But I kind of am like - no more pizza. Even thin crust, only 2 pieces, and I got insomnia. The heartburn isn't as bad as last week, though, so the amount of pizza is probably a biggie on that trigger. Thank goodness for gum, which seems to be my cure for heartburn.
One of the DOWNSIDES of eating healthier most of the time is that indulgences cause more overt discomfort. Although, I think in the past pizza has done this and I just didn't make the connection. Anyway.
So I'm downstairs on the couch, having anxiety about dumb things and wondering how wheat and tomato sauce can do this so quickly to my brain.

Sunday, March 3

S Day!

121.4
morning blood pressure: 120/74

Eating
B: coffee w/milk, steak & egg (leftover steak and last egg!)
L: yogurt w/berries
D: burger w/cheese, pickles, tomato, onion, guacamole, bacon
dessert: (will be) vanilla ice cream

Drinking
Mod Day - yesterday I did really well. I poured out part of a third glass and then decided to have my ice cream instead. Dumped the third glass down the sink and stayed green. And, despite insomnia last night, I feel really good this morning, so I'm so glad I got through that temptation.

Moving
Think I'll be driving to basketball tourney later tonight, so I will probably have time to take a walk, like on Friday night. However, the city is not the safest, so I'll bring my mace this time.
I actually did Week 6, Day 3! Victory!

Spending
Will finally do shopping this morning. Didn't get around to it yesterday. I also need to laundry and clean the bathroom.
Spent $270 at Costco (it's the dog treats, by golly.... $60 for rawhides and bully sticks)
Spent $70 at local grocery

I've experienced this. I once did raw vegan eating for about a year, then ate something cooked, and was immediately violently sick! I'm not someone who is often sick - it really shocked me! Our bodies are very sensitive machines - we're often just too dumb to notice!

I've been 'off' wheat, eggs and dairy for some time now, and I can feel that those things might be problematic for me when/if I eat them. I hope dropping the pizza won't be too hard for you.

I really admire how you fit in your podcast walks and other exercise, Auto. Glad you were safe after you stumbled into that dodgy neighbourhood!

I also find that carb-heavy foods can keep me awake. I mean white carbs (aka stodge   !! Pizza definitely qualifies as stodge.). My heart will pound after having them late at night! I read something about this on Gillian Riley’s website once. It used to freak me out, but now I know what’s causing it, it’s less of a problem. I do try to avoid it most of the time, though, and I do think that I’m more sensitive to such foods now I spend 5 days a week avoiding them. Rawcookie’s experience must have been very alarming!

RawCookie - I am not wheat-free, but "grain-minimized", I would say, compared to my previous life. And loving it.

Octavia - the pounding heart! That's EXACTLY what happened to me both times! When I did a bit of googling, I even saw that it can trigger panic attacks in some people, which would explain my anxiety as well as pounding-heart and insomnia.

Stodge makes me sleep like a baby, but I did read somewhere that there's some connection between carbs and serotonine, don't know if it's true.

Very inspiring Peter Attia podcast:
https://peterattiamd.com/tomcatena/
In this episode, Tom Catena, a missionary physician who runs Mother of Mercy Hospital in the Nuba Mountains in Sudan, describes some of his extraordinary work as the only doctor in a remote, war-torn region of Africa. In terms of individual lives saved, you could argue that there is no other person on the front lines doing more than Tom. Additionally, we explore the manner in which the Nuba people die, which is in striking contrast the ubiquity of chronic disease and self-harm in the west, despite the extreme poverty and unimaginable suffering experienced by the Nuba people. Lastly, we discuss the lessons to be gleaned from the Nuba people, who despite their suffering, live so harmoniously, happily, and resiliently. To support Tom’s mission please visit www.amhf.us.
“I think people may look at Africa and say, ‘What you're doing is just a drop in the ocean.’. . .But when you're there, you don't see a drop in the ocean. You see a person. You see a life.”— Tom Catena

Saturday, March 9
S Day!

121.4

Eating
B: coffee w/milk
L: tortilla chips w/ 3 cheese dip
D: steak and a glass of milk
dessert: (will be) vanilla ice cream

Drinking
Mod Day

Moving
3 basketball games today, so I will work in walks in that 30 min window before games start. Saturdays also often end up a good day to do Elements - I'm on Week 6, Day 4 - if I can fit it in. I also count some speed cleaning, which I tend to do on Saturdays. The kids are in charge of bathroom cleaning, but they can not seem to learn to be detailed about cleaning toilets. Persistence! I will not give up!

Spending
Yesterday Sexy did the Costco run, and of course spent too much and brought home a bunch of convenience foods I would never buy. Irks me.
Today I still need to go to the local grocery and I'm going to buy a new mousse for hair on Amazon that my hair lady recommended.

PersonalLearning
Continuing to read "Becoming A Supple Leopard", by Dr. Kelly Starrett. And I don't know if I can call this personllearning - more like personaltediumadnauseum - I am "optimizing" my website. Yuck! How boring! I am so sorry that some people have to do this as their job. Well, maybe there are people that find it fun and satisfying to continually have to go back and reset things on webpages so they come up in searches.
So I did publish my website. My content is all there and linked with its respective youtube video, notes, quizzes, etc. Now I need to (in addition to optimizing) - go back to work on my youtube channel a bit, then I'll be ready to start adding new content this spring. My goal will be to add one video weekly in a "live stream" with my online students so that they can ask questions and it will be more interactive. I'll also add at least one more video non-live each week.
Oh, and lastly, I am registered to take the TEAS - 2 weeks from now. This is standardized exam my students have to take in order to get into a nursing program. I've taken practice tests, etc., but this will be the real thing so that I have more "street cred" haha with my students. It will help me teach them better - that said, I am nervous! And it definitely goes in the personal learning category because I'll be reviewing basic math over the next 2 weeks.

S Day!

121.0

Eating
B: coffee w/milk, apple slices
L: tortilla chips & cheese dip
dessert 1: 6 pieces of chocolate from Creator's Halloween candy. Wow, that was more than I'd realized I'd had - but I have the wrappers as evidence..... they were fun to eat today, for some reason.
D: Papa Murphy's Pizza -- uh-oh, will I get insomnia?
dessert 2: (will be) vanilla ice cream

Drinking
Mod Day

Moving
No plans, although I have been active this weekend with pull-ups, push-ups, lots of squats, one-legged squats, etc. Nothing formal, just lots of moving while watching basketball games. I try to stay standing during the games, and do various different movements. I'm sure the other parents think I'm silly, but they can go right ahead and think that.
walked 2.2 miles to Challenger's basketball game, then did moves and stretches throughout. Now home and "optimizing" my youtube channel (horrible tedium, my god).
Oh - and drum roll...... this morning I did a full pull-up from a dead hang with full control. I also did the same with a chin-up. I have bicep muscles, ladies and gentlemen!!!!!

Spending
I just gave $90 to transport a mom dog and her puppy from a shelter. Completely not in my budget, no idea where that impulse came from (thank you Facebook).

PersonalLearning
My personal learning today is that website and youtube optimization would be a terrible punishment to me to do full-time!!!! It takes so LONG and is so tedious, and mostly just repetitive brainless work. Ick!!! At least once I get the bulk of this junk ready, I will only be optimizing new material, rather than the 100's of videos and materials I already have that have not yet even had descriptions or tags added.
For actuality, my learning today is with breaks from "optimizing" when I get to read "Supple Leopard". Good stuff.

I wish my family would go along with my suggestion to do this kind of thing rather than Xmas gifts for those of us who all have enough stuff but no one else will go for it. :?

Moving

PersonalLearning
I've been ruminating/focusing on the advice from the book "Game Changer" in that the most effective people brutally trim from their life anything that is not in their top few priorities. For me, top priorities are:
*relationship with my husband
*relationship with my kids
*working on my website & youtube channel
*growing intellectually
*meeting deadlines at work - update - why is this on my list?
*being an effective teacher that students learn a lot with
*taking care of and enjoying time with pets
*managing finances
*taking care of house and cars - and enjoying the home feel
*fostering a few friendships - some are at work, others far-away friends, a couple are here in town
*healthy lifestyle - exercise, sleep & nutrition, reflection/meditation

That is a lot! 11 things. The biggest need to say "no" to things is the casual social get-together. I generally don't enjoy groups of people PLUS it often undermines other priorities - such as healthy lifestyle. One night out and I lose sleep, and probably was faced with crappy food choices. Plus it takes away from time to do my other priorities. Similarly, at work, the biggest underminer of my true priorities are meetings that I really shouldn't be at. So, saying "no" is the best thing for my priorities. And, when I have a chunk of time, choosing to do the things I'm PASSIONATE about rather than just the things that "have to get done" (for example, grocery shopping, cleaning, or writing an exam).

I'm looking at your food journal and wondering if hunger is ever an issue. From my perspective you seem to be eating like a bird. It's not criticism, just curiosity. Has your appetite reduced that much over the years on NoS or was it a conscious decision to eat less?

Hi Auto,
Hope you’re well. Like clarinetgal, I enjoyed reading about your top priorities. It is fascinating how some people manage to brutally trim down their lives, isn’t it? They seem to just do what they want, rejecting anything remotely timewasting. I sometimes suspect that these people (ie. male bloggers and productivity gurus) have wives who mop up all the tedious stuff, the duties, the social obligations. Though I could be wrong.

Tomorrow we’re going for dinner with FIL, and for me this is a huge investment of energy (it’s down to me to set a lively tone...keep conversation flowing and answer lots of questions about my fascinating career, snore) ... and I’ll have to contend with heavy food and irresistible wine. Then I won’t sleep, and will still be feeling off colour two days later! So I’d like to ruthlessly trim these occasions from my life...but I haven’t the heart. I suppose that’s where the ruthlessness/brutality comes in!

Anyway, hope your weekend goes well. All the best!

Hello, I am one of those who "ruthlessly and brutally" trim down their lives! Not sure it's made me a success-story... :D And it's also not something that's ever happened by design, it's just the way I am wired.
(I'm not too sure about the spouses mopping up the tedious stuff. If I had to live with someone who's not as streamlined as me I would have the problem he doesn't get me and viceversa)

There's no heartlessness in it, or I hope so. Acquaintances and relatives just got used to the fact that I am not the most available person, and don't really mind, people always manage to find someone else. I do things and meet people that I find interesting and cut down on chores I can delegate. It seems so logical to me I don't know I am even doing it. But I am also not a people-person and that may explain.

S Day!

121.0

Good stuff.
Sorry I missed this^^^, but big Congrats on a full pull-up from a dead-hang start.

Hi all! I'm back from Challenger's State Basketball Tourney! Weekend went pretty well food-wise considering we were traveling.

Hi Clarinetgal! Thanks for popping by. yes, priorities are tricky but it was useful (and kind of enlightening) to list them like that.
Octavia - if I weren't so tired right now I would copy most of your comment - I related to all of it and you had me laughing (as usual). OMG - the men that get the luxury of doing that because their wives take care of the rest - I bet that is often true (I'm thinking Mr. MoneyMustache, The BulletProof Guy (Dave Asprey), Peter Attia, just to name a few).
Margot - I have a reasonable ability to say no to people. I'm not the best nor the worst at this. But I think I can do better without suffering social consequences, so I'd like to pursue that.
Whosonfirst - Ah, thanks for noticing my pull-up from a dead hang!!! I've been working toward it for ages and it feels amazing to do it. Now I'm working on perfect pistol squats.
Imogen - hunger is not an (undo) issue for me. Yes, I'm hungry for lunch. And yes, I'm ready for dinner. But I always feel satisfied after my meals. I think I typically eat around 1500 calories, which is probably appropriate for my age, activity, and size. I think readers of my thread probably (way) underestimate my massive yogurt meal. It's like 500 calories. It's 2 cups of whole fat yogurts + a cup of blueberries & strawberries. Beautifully satisfying, filling, and never ever gives me any intestinal issues. On the contrary, it's soothing and feels like delicious self-care. Dare I say, comfort-food. It would be my wish that everyone could find a meal that is so wonderful for them from a physical, mental, and kind of spiritual perspective. I have a thing for dairy cows and their one-ness with the earth or something strangely metaphysical like that. omg I am crazy.
I eat more on S Days (as you can see below), and I make sure to not overexert any willpower on S Days. It's not worth wearing out my willpower.
Two other hunger comments - #1. As Oolala has many times mentioned, even if we are pretty hungry when we sit down for a meal, it doesn't actually take much food to fill us up (if we are paying attention, etc.). I have found that a zillion times to be true. #2. Moderating the carbs in my life (ah, breaking up is hard to do) has made ALL the difference in changing my constant hunger to normal amounts of hunger. I deal less with hunger now than I did when I ate whatever and whenever I wanted (wild, isn't that??????!!!!!). And, just like after you break up with a loser and finally see the light, pasta and bread just don't seem that sexy to me anymore. 8) Carb reduction (and specifically GRAIN-reduction) is probably not for everybody, but for me, it's been life-changing. I just updated this because I still get a lot of carbs from dairy and a reasonable amount from fruit. It really does seem to be the gobs of grains that had to go for my particular metabolism. And probably potatoes, but I don't see such an obvious connection there.

Friday
B: coffee w/milk, latte + ham & egg sandwich w/just the bottom half of the bun
L: yogurt w/berries on the road
D: Mexican restaurant - tortilla chips, salsa, tortilla soup - avoided the tortilla strips and just ate the chicken and avocado and drank the broth - which made me realize the soup was mostly soaked chips, lol.
Abs Day

Saturday
B: 1 egg & sausage at my brother's house, Starbuck's latte
L: Roundtable pizza
afternoon latte
D: meatloaf & a piece of bread
dessert: vanilla ice cream
Abs Day
suffered from some evening cramps from the pizza and bread, but I still slept great and was very thankful for that.

Sunday
B: coffee w/milk, Starbuck's latte + egg bites
L: McDonalds- quarterpounder + fries + diet coke
another diet coke in the car
D: ugh, no thanks tired and just want a glass of wine
Mod Day for Alcohol! Welcome home, Auto! :-)

Couple last fun points - took Challenger and two teammates to a trampoline place yesterday after games. I paid for myself to jump, thinking - dude, perfect way to get some more movement into my day. And I jumped for an hour. I kind of perfected my front flip (just sayin') and did two climbing walls and worked on the tightrope quite a bit. I am annoyingly bad at learning a back flip and even the precursor where you just flop onto your back (it just gives me whip-lash). All this to say that I have ENERGY again. When my boys were little, and we'd go to places like this, I CRAVED sitting at one of the tables and reading a book. My health is so much better now, though, that I have energy to live again. When I was in college, my nick-name was "live-wire". Many times in the intervening years I've despaired at how pathetic my energy had become. But by moderating my carbs, I've found my happy place again.

Thanks for the reply, I appreciate you taking the time to respond so comprehensively. Five, six years ago I used to eat in a very similar way: modest meals appropriate for my size and level of activity, moderate carbs, lots of protein, hunger was mangeable etc. But then I lost too much weight, struggled with reproductive health issues caused by calorie restriction, and I guess I ended up with some subconscious fear of getting too skinny and too unhealthy again. That's why I eat even I'm not hungry when I realise I have some calories left over for the day.
Anyway, thanks for the inspiration, too. I've started delaying my breakfast and having a pot of skyr or other high-protein yogurt for my first meal. I could swear my mood is already improving. Probably wishful thinking, but hey, if it makes me feel good, I'm not going to question it too much.

122.0

Eating
B: coffee w/milk
L: yogurt w/berries
D: 2 hot dogs. One w/bun, onions, shredded cheese & guacamole. The second dipped in mustard and guacamole - Creator has a Round Table Pizza Party to wrap up his basketball season. He got the "Mr. Hustle" Award. Cute.

Drinking
Abs Day - um no. I forgot I had given myself permission to have free S Days for alcohol until the end of the week, ha.

Moving
Too tired to get out of bed this morning. How can driving all day in a car make me feel like I ran a marathon yesterday? Maybe I'm sore from the trampoline, haha.
Plus I think I'm getting a cold. Right after I told Imogen I haven't been sick. Of course. Murphy's Law.

Spending
Need to stop at the local grocery to get yogurt, milk, and a couple salad bags. Didn't shop over the weekend, so this will be a little tricky.

ReadingtoCreator
I'd like to read tonight with him, either Harry Potter or Incorrigible Children

Sorry you’re sick and yes driving can be exhausting. Sounds like things are going well. Can’t believe how low your weight has gotten. I’m both happy for you and envious at the same time. ☺️

Love your trampoline story. I spent many hours watching my kids jump. I think i was just happy to have a little break.

Keep up the good work!

Thanks for swinging by my thread, Linda! You know - about me finally losing weight - it's sort of fitting that having the same meals most days is what was my breakthrough; I named myself "automatedeating" after respect/envy of my dad's food habits when I started NoS. But at the beginning I thought I should try to emulated HIS meals, which are not that satisfying to me so I assumed that variety was what I needed. Instead, I just had to find what works for me. And, although I get scared thinking about this, I will probably have to adjust as time passes to fit my changing tastes and metabolism. :| But there I go again, worrying about the future instead of enjoying the moment.

Tuesday, March 19

120.8

Eating
B: coffee w/milk
L: yogurt w/berries
leftover coffee from the morning
D: Double burger w/cheese, onion, tomato, bacon, guacamole. Divine. I didn't make a menu this week. Being gone over the weekend really messed up this week!!

Drinking
Abs Day, even though I gave myself a free S week. I just want to.

Moving
no morning walk again. Weather's beautiful, actually, but I am really tired. I think I do have a tiny cold, but more than that, I'm just worn down from the quarter. I've learned I need to listen to my body when this happens.

Spending
Taking kids roller skating tonight for a group event. I can probably go to Costco while they skate. Then maybe I should skate. :-) I do love roller skating, but only for about 30 minutes, then I get a bit bored.

ReadingtoCreator
Read Dory to Creator last night! Can you believe it?! It's been ages since I read to him.

PersonalLearning
Watched several talks from LowCarb Denver through my DietDoctor membership. Gary Taubes talk was great; so was a dietician that works with pregnant women with gestational diabetes. I started watching a polite discussion between Gary Taubes and Dariush Mozzafarian (moderated by Ivor Cummins). Will probably finish that today.
Working on basic math (!!!) from middle school days. I am taking a standardized test on Friday called the TEAS test. My students have to take it to apply to our college's nursing program. I'd like to see what it's like. My score doesn't really matter, but of course I'm afraid I'll do terrible. That alone gives me empathy for my students.

Good luck on your test, Auto! I was good at math once, but I'm certain I would not pass a basic algebra exam without some serious refreshing. 🙃

About the automated part, that is such an interesting insight. You know, I was doing my best when I was eating good defaults. I'm inspired by your post. Thank you for sharing!

Just browsing. A couple of posts up made me think of a comment made at a cooking class I went to a couple of weeks ago. The host said it seems most cultures don't have a lot of variety in their eating, except ours. They don't feel the need to experiment as much. I guess that's part of our melting pot. Then again, even in ours, it seems to me overeaters eat a lot of the same stuff over and over. I sure did. And when I do road trips, it seems you can always count on getting burgers and pizza. Which both play extremely small roles in my eating these days.

PersonalLearning
I developed this first page of my syllabus -

My Philosophy for this Class Structure

My boys are wonderful. They are cute, they are smart, they are funny. They are also very passionate about learning……..well, about learning what THEY want to know about. And usually that’s how to upload a Fortnite video to YouTube, how to build a Scratch program that allows the ball to bounce realistically, or how to “livestream” and prepare clips through the Xbox. Yep - they have their own passions, just like I do, and just like you do. After watching them for some time now, I see that their electronic focuses are anything but passive. They are being creative, they are problem-solving, and they are being resourceful. Because they want to! They have a goal! Not because a teacher or other authority-figure commanded them to spend hours trying to fix a broken code - they do it because they are intrinsically motivated, thanks to their own passions and natural giftings.

My passion is anatomy & physiology and health-related subjects. I want you to learn as much as possible in my classes, and I want you to gain skills and knowledge in my class that helps you accomplish your long-term goals. To do that, learning needs to be the focus. Not grades, but learning. At this time, the nursing program for our college does NOT reward for high grades. It rewards for a high score on the TEAS test, and in order to do well, you need to have really learned (not memorized and then forgotten) important A&P concepts.

My approach this quarter is to have you learn through stories (called case studies). I want to put YOU in the driver seat of your learning. I want you actively approaching this content. If you are a driven and high-achieving student that enjoys A&P already, you will appreciate the real-life applications and the freedom to study topics that you particularly love or are curious about. If you are a struggling student that works hard but sometimes comes up short of your academic goals, I am confident that you will rediscover some of your natural love for learning, and come away from this class with more conceptual understanding than you ever thought possible. If you are here just because you “have” to be, I hope that this format will revive in you an interest in learning, and that a newfound motivation will spring forth in you.

Aspects of this type of learning can be uncomfortable. You will not be sitting back; you will be engaged and working throughout each class period. However, I believe that by the end of the quarter, every student will have at least from time to time experienced “flow”, a state of invigorated focus and attention that happens when we are fully immersed in something we care about and are improving at. That feeling is addicting (in a good way), and is in large part why I so enjoy my job. I get to experience flow on are regular basis. I’d like you to as well!

I have found 8 case studies (almost 1/week) that pertain to our topics, and I have been researching "problem-based learning", which is used extensively in med schools but less commonly used for undergraduates like I teach. I am assigning students to groups of 3 or 4, and within those groups they have very clearly defined (and rotating) roles. They will explore the case, decide what they know and what they still need to learn, then prioritize and request of me specific lecture topics. My hope is that this will engage them to be more involved during my lectures.

I will meet weekly with each student (or a small group) and give feedback orally and written to them. They will similarly be able to give me feedback about how their quarter/learning, etc. is progressing. They will keep a portfolio of all their work, notes, practice tests, etc., and they will log all of their study time (kind of like logging food, eh? -- maybe I'll use that as an example!)

Eating
B: coffee w/milk
L: yogurt w/berries
FAIL: bowl of doritos & bowl of chocolate covered almonds. I just was so excited to be done with that standardized test.
D: steak & potatoes & mushrooms
FAIL: bowl of chocolate peanut butter ice cream & a hershey bar
Quite the non-planned S Day, I guess.

Needing to completely veg out for a couple of days. And that's what I intend to do. :-) I'm hoping to take Creator to IHOP tomorrow and get the cream cheese crepes.

Mmm cream cheese crepes! It's OK Auto, you've been doing amazing anyway. Have a wonderful weekend!

At least you transferred the Doritos to a bowl. I guess it's sort of a nod to being civilized about it.

Listening to the Self-Driven Child:
Description from Amazon:
A few years ago, Bill Stixrud and Ned Johnson started noticing the same problem from different angles: Even high-performing kids were coming to them acutely stressed and lacking motivation. Many complained they had no control over their lives. Some stumbled in high school or hit college and unraveled. Bill is a clinical neuropsychologist who helps kids gripped by anxiety or struggling to learn. Ned is a motivational coach who runs an elite tutoring service. Together they discovered that the best antidote to stress is to give kids more of a sense of control over their lives. But this doesn't mean giving up your authority as a parent. In this groundbreaking book they reveal how you can actively help your child to sculpt a brain that is resilient, and ready to take on new challenges.

The Self-Driven Child offers a combination of cutting-edge brain science, the latest discoveries in behavioral therapy, and case studies drawn from the thousands of kids and teens Bill and Ned have helped over the years to teach you how to set your child on the real road to success. As parents, we can only drive our kids so far. At some point, they will have to take the wheel and map out their own path. But there is a lot you can do before then to help them tackle the road ahead with resilience and imagination.

I downloaded the book, thanks for mentioning it. I would say we raised our child in that way, but one can always learn more. My son is high IQ and goes to a specific school for high IQ children, and you wouldn't know how many of them (not L thankfully) have problems of motivation. Such a waste of talent... The school does a good job at allowing them to take charge of their learning and be very autonomous, and that is positive, they also organise lectures for the parents to attend to. I would say, for the little experience I have of children other than mine, that not all kids want to be self-directed, some really thrive in a more structured environment where they're told clearly what to do, but the more gifted the child, the more the desire to be self-directed, I think. Fun fact: L, despite our repeated attempts to teach him to say mom and dad, has always called us by name. He made it clear from the start where he stood!

Margot - sounds like you most definitely have a "self-directed child". :)

Monday, March 25

123.2

Eating
B: coffee w/milk
L: (will be) yogurt w/berries
D: (will be) beef bowl/spaghetti for kids

Drinking
Abs Day. I'm going to need a lot of focus and accountability to get back to normal on drinking after the last 2 weeks.

Moving
Going to walk HappyHerder to his vet appt. today. I have to get him a couple vaccines before he can go to DoggyDaycare and be boarded. I'm a little nervous because sometimes vaccines can trigger existing autoimmune issues, of which he has a pretty scary one (autoimmune meningitis). Fingers crossed. I also think I'll go Vitamin Week 2, Day 1, and maybe even Elements Week 7, Day 1.
I'm on spring break, although I'll be working throughout it. So I really should be able to take frequent movement breaks each day.

Spending
No plans - yesterday I bought that Starbuck's stuff.

PersonalLearning
I have 3 hours left in Self-Directed Child. It's pretty good. But the best parts were the first few chapters (sadly, like many book). After that, not as provocative to me (I guess I like provocative, ha!)

He most definitely is. I can't take much credit for it, the ongoing joke among our friends and his is that he comes from Mars - easiest relationship of my life.

A book I have really loved on these themes, although not from a scientific perspective, just a pragmatic one, is How to Talk So Kids Will Listen & Listen So Kids Will Talk. I guess it may be a classic in America? Here I've never met anyone who knew it. For my part, I think they should make it illegal to fail to give it a read. I still go back to it every now and then, and E. too. There may be an audio-book but (disclosure) I have actually never "really" read more than the first pages or done the exercises, I just looked at the vignettes, lazy me. But it's been my bible! Boiled down summary: subtext is everything.

And I wanted to say, I have started your book and I love that already in the first page they mention sleep, which is such a no-brainer and yet all L's friends are sleep-deprived. I had to live with insomnia for 15 years to know what an impact whether you sleep enough or not can have on you. It's one of the only places where I've ever drawn a hard line with L.- not that I had to do any convincing. Still now at 14 he sleeps more than 10 hours every night. If he goes to bed late he will wake up late, he sorts it himself, close the shutters and sets his alarm-clock. Done! Such a simple thing and so impactful!

We picked up "How to raise your spirited child" at our local bookstore. The picture on the cover is a kid yelling and hanging from a tree, looking precocious. Our older daughter is awesome by the way, she's just intense at times, and we wanted some tips. No big deal. Anyway, the super young clerk laughed and said "uh.. good luck!" Sort of awkward as we paid and left, but I thought it was funny!

Good luck with getting back on track with ypur drink days. I find it’s definitely easier at some times than others. Hoping all goes well with happy herder! Aren’t dogs the best? My family all (half) joking tells me I love our littlest dog, Tessa, more than anyone else in the family. ☺️

Hi Margot! I have that book - How to talk so kids will listen.... - and I have read it cover to cover several times in the last 13 years.  They also have How to talk so teens will listen.... I've heard that one is not as good. I also read their How to teach so kids will listen..... also not as good as their "classic", as you put it.

Challenger13 is aptly named. At one point about 3 years ago, I decided I would never read another parenting book because nothing helped me with him. But, of course, I can't stay away for too long from self-help books. One really interesting thing in the book (The Self-Directed Child) is that it is the "Challengers" of the world that actually still often find their way to be self-directed (because they insist, of course!) and the easy-going ones (more like my Creator) that, if not given the ability to have more autonomy, may suffer more in young adulthood. That reminds me of my husband, who has dealt with depression and anxiety for much of his life, and when he talks about it he uses language about "not having control". His family was extremely controlling on every level, from attire to behavior to activities, etc. Very loving and nurturing people - they are not evil! They just thought that perfect control of their kids was the best thing. And it's not. :| My family, on the other hand, gave me a lot of freedom. Or I just took it, haha. I was the youngest of 4 and I had FREE REIGN in a time when families still gave their kids freedom. I remember, at just 10 years old, taking the MAX Light Rail to downtown Portland to visit my college-aged sister. By myself, and sometimes the trains were at night. And no cell phones, so when my train arrived in my hometown I'd have to use a PAY PHONE to call my parents and let them know I was there, and then wait in the dark until they arrived. And all of this was considered normal. No one thought we were a strange family. Last of the free range generation. I will say that my friends that have slightly older children have trackers on their kids' cell phones. When they told me that....I just felt deep inside that even if it provides a little more safety - I need to resist that. Reading this book has confirmed that further (even though that is obviously a personal choice - they do not say that in the book).

Liveitup - that is a different book! Although I think a good one - I'm pretty sure I have read that book, too. A different sort of angle, and if I remember correctly, better for younger children. The Self-Directed Child is nice for me right now because much of it is appropriate for raising teens.

Ah, Linda, our pups! I want another one so much! There is a litter of Aussies that will be ready in June, and I keep my eye on all the Rescue postings in my area. Unfortunately, because the animal shelters are pretty empty in my animal progressive/spaying/neutering/adopt first area, so many of the rescues are listed as - no children, no cats, no other dogs.... The ones that aren't like that are snapped up the day they arrive in the rescue. It's hard to find a dog in my town! How times have changed! They bring them over from Korea to adopt out, but charge thousands of dollars. They bring lots up from Texas. Someone should write a book about it.

L: chicken caesar salad
D: ground beef & cheese bowl

Drinking
Abs Day again, although I failed yesterday. :|

Moving
Walked 4 miles yesterday w/HappyHerder - hoping to do that this afternoon too, although I missed the morning window. I am on spring break, after all. But still have to take kids to school. Also worked a bit more on Vitamin. This one move really worked my deltoids (unbeknownst to me until the soreness hit the next day!). Also, I did 3 "cheaty" chin-ups yesterday. I didn't return to starting position in between, but really just wanted to keep going. So that was cool.

We're continuing with A Wrinkle in Time. That book sure is strange. But Creator loves it. He says it's the kind of thing he imagines in his head all the time.

Eating

L: yogurt w/berries
D: Steak, mushrooms, and a triangle of a kid's quesadilla

Drinking
Mod Day - although I failed again last night, so sheesh..... Onward. And too bad I can't seem to feel bad or motivated to fix this.

Spending
Date night and I've been buying coffee at work once in awhile recently. Not a habit I want to develop.

ReadingtoCreator
Actually read to both boys last night - Challenger asked me to read the Hobbit. We almost got through the (very long) first chapter.

PersonalLearning

Oh thats so interesting about the dog shelters. Im definitely living in the wrong state but dh says Arizona needs me so here we stay. I told Rosebud about because she volunteers at an animal shelter every weekend. Plenty of adorable dogs for you to chose from if you ever visit our sunny state.

I can remember my dad reading wrinkle in time for me. One of my favorites. Love that creator imagines stuff like that in his head. Very cool!

Ladybird - what a very insightful application from the article. Indeed, I bet it is just as damaging. I think of how our self-criticisms undermine our habit-building on a regular basis.

I love that Rosebud volunteers there! Great for the animals and wonderful life-long memory-making for her. I worked at a vet clinic throughout high school, and to this day I tell my kids it was one of my favorite jobs ever. I think it might also go back to the ideas about autonomy and agency - I had a lot of independence (I had to walk or ride my bike there), the vet and staff treated me like an adult, I was doing work that was meaningful, I was at the edge of my learning curve (that sweet spot), and of course - I just loved animals more than people at that point in my life. I planned on being a vet, but after college decided to go to grad school in physiology instead. My advisor told me he thought I might find typical vet medicine a little boring, after a while. I don't know if that is true, but at least the path I did take I do love my job.

122.4

Eating
B: coffee w/milk, hashbrowns, eggs, bacon
L: tortilla chips & guacamole
D: 1 cookie, 1 piece pizza, 1 bbq chicken wing

Eating
B: coffee w/milk

D: almost 3/4 of a frozen cheese pizza.
1 BBQ buffalo bite

Moving
Another nice walk/jog in the sun w/HappyHerder.
Couldn't quite do my chin-ups this morning. Funny how my strength changes day to day.
Does anyone out there have a Puggle? I've read conflicting things about their energy level & barking, but I love the idea of combining the personality of a beagle and a pug -- seems like I would end up with a safer-length nose, an ultra-friendly dog that loves kids and with enough energy to keep up with HappyHerder and me on our daily walk/jogs. Oh, and small enough to fit in our small house and easily go in the car everywhere with me. I'm sort of getting smitten on this mix of breeds.

I wanted to say, puggles look adorable. I dog-sitted a bulldog in my 20's, which I utterly adored, and I know it isn't the same as a pug but, they share the same health problems. I can't imagine having a dog with the personality of Arturo (my darling) AND a better equipped body. Must be amazing!

Yes - Puggles so cute.
But the more I ponder on the whole "second dog" question, I just find myself spinning in circles. I have anxiety about dogs biting neighborhood kids (our neighborhood is busting at the seams with little ones that love to come up and jump and hug dogs). My current dog is fine (I sort of lucked out - my last herding dog was unpredictable), but I do guard him protectively from over-huggy toddlers. No need to tempt fate! Anyway, I guess I really just have a thing for herding breeds. But they are not exactly the best fit for neighborhood kiddos, etc. They are not labs. Or goldendoodles. Or golden retrievers.
And we are going on a roadtrip this summer, and a trip to CA at Christmas. So this year, once again, is probably not good to add a puppy (I went through this last summer too and was most definitely derailed when HappyHerder got that horrific/expensive autoimmune meningitis).
To assuage my guilt I took HappyHerder to DoggyDaycare today. It's expensive and a little out of the way, but if we aren't going to get him a playmate, I at least can take him to play with other dogs sometimes. He's the kind of dog that loves those places (again, he's not totally typical for herding breeds - he is friendly with people and other dogs).
Plus, I don't really want my relationship with HappyHerder to change. I know that adding a puppy would really change the dynamic and I think I would be a little sad about that.
Here I go again, being overly-analytical Auto. Me? Overthink things? Never!

Yeah let it be yours and only!
When I was in high-school a tragedy happened once, at the birthday party of a schoolmate her dog literally bit away the point of the nose of a girl. Like, he took away an inch of the nose, no small thing. She had to go through plastic surgery and all. I don't know how it could happen, that dog was a super-nice german shepard dog!
This is to say you never know, when they get nervous they get nervous. You're right to keep a close watch.
Hmm - hope the ghastly story didn't freak you out... she ended up having a very nice life, nothing was ruined for good because the nose was rather well put back together. I don't imagine she ever had dogs as a pet though.

I’ve been out of your loop for a bit, so I just browsed through. I actually had that book about how to talk to teens, but I ended up never reading it, and I think I’ve moved it to the giveaway pile since I retired. I have to admit I sometimes go through some real guilt and remorse over how I handled things with students over the years. My natural inclinations were so different from what was often the better way to act at the time. I had let’s go to some extent the last year, but it was more about my doing nothing than becoming a lot more skillful. Kudos to you for navigating it as well as you have.

I feel like I am one of the most selfish parents I know. I'm not just being self-deprecating; I really think this is true. I'm not saying I'm a monster. I know that for the most part my children are well-cared for, and I know all of you know I love them and want them to have rewarding, fun, and passion-filled lives. But, I do not always cherish or love them way EVERY single parenting book will tell is the most critical thing a parent can do. But my kids are 13 and 9 now, so it's not like I can start over. It sort of is what it is. On the bright side, they are both pretty resourceful and (more) independent than a lot of their peers. I have a new theory about children these days, btw. Wanna hear it? I used to really wonder why so many kids "seemed" lazy or disinterested or even kind of boring. But now I'm starting to believe what I'm witnessing are kids that are suffering from "learned helplessness", you know, that psychological phenomenon where an animal gives up trying to get away if they've been punished for trying to escape for a long time. I think kids experience that in our culture WAY more with each passing generation. For example, they want to ride their bike to the store? Well, no, that's too dangerous - car-wise and pedophile-wise. They want to start a YouTube channel? Nope - too dangerous - there are too many predators out there. They want to make a meal? Nope - oven could cause a burn or knife could cause a cut. See what I mean? So they lack in both in what they are allowed to do and what they are expected to do, both out of safety concerns. This undermines their ability to develop competence and hinders their needs to find their passions and giftings. Because of my selfishness (see above, har har), my kids have had (a little) more freedom than most of their peers. I'm always the mom that gets the "you let your kids do that?!" line. But even I am over-protective compared to what my parents let me do, or THEIR parents let them do! I think Challenger is a lot like his grandpa, but doesn't have 1/10 of the freedom to explore his gifts, find his passions, and spread his wings like my dad did.

D: hot dog, tortilla chips and guacamole
Fail - ice cream. :(

Drinking
Mod Day

Moving
Lots of yard work already today, and worked on organizing the garage a little.

Spending
Grocery shopping? Maybe? Not really in the mood.

ReadingtoKids
Read Chapter 3 of the Hobbit - so funny (and sweet) that Challenger has been asking me to read at night again. He's 13 so that is pretty cool. He shoots baskets while I read. Creator is there too (literally bouncing off the walls and then onto the bed) but I'm not sure how much he is listening. They are funny like this because Challenger has a) already had this read to him (it was many years ago though); b) doesn't like to read on his own that much; and c) is an excellent auditory learner. Creator a) has never heard this story and is not real into it; b) prefers to read by himself (mostly); and c) is often in la-la land while I read to him and doesn't really soak in much of it. Anyway, I consider it a special thing that right about when I'd figured my read out-loud days were over, Challenger has been asking me to read again. And both of the boys are like - Skyrim (video game) copied that! - or Harry Potter used that! - etc. The Hobbit was written in 1937! Wow.

PersonalLearning
OMG I'm reading a horrible book! It's called "MotherLand" by Paul Theroux (he wrote Mosquito Coast). Anyway, it is so crazy and dysfunctional! I wish I would stop seeing my self in it.   :?

I remember when my son was 2 or 3 allowing him to help prepare a meal and giving him a sharp knife, my friend was horrified!

It's hard in this day and age to let go. I often wonder if more bad things do actually happen or if they are just more widely reported so it seems worse.

Btw he didn't cut himself and is a strapping 24 yr old now who can cook :)

Some weeks ago when you remember I was all about eating apples, my son says: I want one too. And so I give one to him, and add, you need to peel it because the skin feels waxed or something. And there and then I found out that my very handsome and sophisticated darling  DOESN'T F-ING KNOW HOW TO PEAL AN APPLE! It was an agony to witness.

Soprano - It's probably relative, safety. I have read so many books about life in the middle ages that I can say life is MUCH safer now. And that's even if you were to control for infant mortality. Now, if we are comparing safety with 50 years ago, it's still safer, I think, although I don't have data in front of me for that. As far as the real scary serial killers/pedophiles -- personally, I think there have always been serial killers. And I think the ones that we catch are just a few of them. I was pondering the other day how strange it is that humans were so OK with torture. The Rack, for example, or "draw and quartering" - where they dissect out their intestines before killing them. And that was someone's job?! That person probably always was a psycho sadist. I mean, really, people were put in stocks and then it was OK to pee on them or throw poop in their face? And they say kids today are desensitized to violence. Sheesh. (note - upon even further reflection I was filled with sadness for the parts of the world where the children are brought up to be little soldiers - taught to murder from a very young age - heartbreaking)
Sorry for this tangent - I read too much and imagine too much more.

Margot - Ha!

Saturday, April 6

123.0

Although it's an S Day, the problem with multiple fails or "exceptions" during N Days makes the S Day not as satisfying. Keep S days satisfying!

Eating
B: coffee w/milk, bacon & eggs, apple and banana
L: vanilla ice cream! I need to get a grip. I seem to be in a strange spiral of dread for next quarter.
D: steak, bacon & macaroni bites, diet coke
dessert - thinking about getting some Reese's Pieces - update - got a strawberry sundae at Costco. Just for me. I ate it with relish in the car. And it really cheered me up.
I might end up having chocolate macadamias tonight. Or popcorn. I may. I just might. If I feel like it. 8)

Drinking
Abs Day
White-knuckling it. Alcohol is a pick me up, a let me down, a snack, a dessert, and seconds.
But I'm good now. I'll be cool until tomorrow, which is a mod day.

Moving
Feeling a little sore from my yard work yesterday! But I hope to get back out there again today. Weather is not great for it but there will probably be some clearings in the showers. Plus I have good gloves.

Spending
Grocery shopping today ~$70 at local grocery. $212 at Costco. I went a little wild, stocking up on a few things (which I haven't been doing in almost a year - only buy what we are (almost) out of..... but it was a combination of a few things: 1) didn't thoroughly check what I have/need compared to my menu; 2) dreading next week and not wanting to run out of kid lunches or dinner items or anything while I'm fighting through week 1; and 3) some sort of "going wild" inside of me right now. More on that below.

Reading -
finished that crazy book, Mother Land. Meh. Double Meh.
Started another book that seems more promising - A Constellation of Vital Phenomena by Anthony Marra. I'm not too far so don't give anything away if you've read it. 8)

Dealing with anxiety like all-get-out!!! As I was loading up the car at Costco, I thought, "Why am I worrying about something that hasn't even happened yet?" and then of course I had to laugh at myself, since that is what anxiety IS. The guy in the next car over probably thought I was crazy bat-s#*t.
I guess I have never had a quarter where I've had this many different classes to teach. All four of them are very different, and either new preps (one is an online lecture so I have to make so many videos), new format (one is gradeless), new labs, and new structure for all of them (de-emphasis on grades, although only one is all-in with this idea). I'm freaking out. Apparently. I mean, I've been getting work done this week, but drinking way too much alcohol for many weeks. I think I've been trying to push away that anxiety using alcohol. Looking back over my journal, I fell off my moderation bandwagon on almost EXACTLY the same day that I agreed to do that 4th different class. Talk about not wanting to admit my anxiety. So weird! Well, maybe not so weird. Humans have been using alcohol (or food, sex, gambling, shopping, or whatever) to assuage anxiety for millenia. But I thought I was more enlightened than that. But nope, it took like a month of drinking too much for me to realize that I'm trying not to think about how hard this quarter is going to be.

So, non-alcoholic coping mechanisms this quarter will be:
*Walk/jogs w/HappyHerder - gotta do it! Evenings too on Abs days as needed.
*Good books to read - in bed by 8pm (reading or reading w/kids)
*Eat good food. Enjoy my S Days with abandon if needed; treat myself to lattes as needed. Have diet cokes for dopamine hits if needed.
*Keep the menu simple and the grocery shopping done. Don't let myself get surprised by a tough day with nothing planned to eat.

I can't come up with anything else. :? Hopefully those things will be enough.

Ha! I forgot to comment on Theroux, I read his Grand Railway Bazaar and I had a hard time finishing it. I can't say it wasn't interesting material but the author's attitude was just so offputting.

Margot - his attitude in "Mother Land" was pretty whiny, I'd say. I kept going because one of the reviews suggested there was some redemption at the end. I hoped that meant he would change....but nope.

Sunday, April 7

123.0

Dread overcomes me. The quarter starts tomorrow and I have bitten off far too much to chew. I stand, mouth full, eyes bulging, sweat forming on my brow.

I've been contemplating further the source of my anxiety. It is not just the workload, although that weighs on me as well (and just fear that I'll let things fall through the cracks and miss something). It is the unknown of it all - I'm teaching in such a different way and what if they all hate me? :| Sheesh, Auto, get a grip! I am a seasoned teacher - I can do this! I guess teaching old dogs new tricks is not just hard, it's extra stressful. The poor old dog!

One bright spot - I woke up from great dreams about old family friends sitting around having great conversation. It was nice. And I sat right up and thought - I need to make a video on Septic Shock, which is a fun prospect for me.

Eating

Sigh. We got about 5 minutes out and HappyHerder really couldn't walk anymore. I've been noticing he's been a little off since Thursday but hoped he was just sore from his day at Doggy Daycare. But nope. He's relapsed, most likely from the Bordatella vaccine two weeks ago. I got him started on his prednisone and omeprazole. It's a delicate balance because he doesn't handle the steroids well and got a GI bleed last time.

Went on a fairly short walk with HappyHerder. His joint pain seems resolved, but he is on high dose steroids so I don't want to push it.

Spending
Date Night & buying a humidifier for Creator, who has had a nagging cough for months now!

Going Gradeless Update!
Today was my first day with my "collaborative" grading Anatomy & Physiology class! The class is a 3-hour block and I wasn't sure how far I'd get with introducing these concepts and building our class syllabus together. WOW! We spent 3 hours of "therapy" (ha!) answering questions about things like:
*what does it mean to have truly learned something?
*how do tests affect (pros/cons) learning and motivation?
*what is "flow" and what types of experiences have you had with it?
*what is the role of group learning, in and out of a classroom?
*what are the significant differences between "in-class" time and "outside" class time?
*how does it feel to evaluate yourself?
I was pleasantly surprised at the depth of their responses, especially considering that I sprung this on them and they haven't been ruminating on these ideas for months (like me!). I was still shocked (thought I was prepared) for the extent of their fear about evaluating themselves.
By the end of the 3 hours, we all knew each other pretty well and I think I had good buy-in for my class structure. I had amazing class participation, too. That was a pleasant surprise.
I had expected push-back from the high achievers but was surprised at their faith in me to do this right (ack! the pressure to not let them down!). I was also amazed that a student that had previously failed spoke up - he never said a word last time he took the class! He said he actually feels excited to learn and that his whole life he has just skated through school doing the minimum but that now he feels motivated to really just learn.
So.
Wow.
Surreal.
Going to be a crazy quarter.
Definitely invigorating.

Obviously what you are doing is working for you now, and I am sure you can adjust to whatever is needed as you age. At age 72 with an autoimmune disease I have had to make my restrictions. I also have a much bigger appetite than you. I would be constantly hungry eating the amount of food you seem to thrive on. What concerns me the most these days is watching the next generation. Many chronic diseases take decades to develop. Convenience eating, the need for immediate food-craving satisfaction, and direct corporate marketing are playing a role. It has been noted that young people have the most unhealthy pattern worldwide. Watching my friends' grandchildren constantly putting junk in their mouths all day long, starting with their poptarts for breakfast is disturbing.

S Day!

Eating:
B: coffee w/milk, and I hear Sexy might make us a big breakfast - yup, we had bacon, eggs & hashbrowns
L: dessert for lunch! - vanilla ice cream
D: chicken fried chicken, tortilla chips w/guac
dessert: ice cream cookie

Drinking
Abs Day
Idea about drinking - I just had a bit of an insight after reading Soprano's latest post about saving her alcoholic beverages for the weekend. I think my success is the reverse of that.....having a glass of wine on N Days is its own very special treat, and then on S Days ice cream is the substitute for that. So maybe I need to rearrange my Abs Days and make more of them on the weekend (when I am free to eat ice cream). I certainly don't enjoy having a glass of wine after a bowl of ice cream. It's a weird dichotomy in one evening for my palate.
Abs Days right now - MTThSat It's a good fit right now, but I might consider switching things around.

PersonalLearning
Reading "The Case Against Education". I am in the early chapters, where he's displaying all the stats about how little students learn and retain. Sort of depressing.

Sunday, April 14

Eating
B: coffee w/milk, bacon & eggs
L: vanilla ice cream
D: steak + tortilla chips w/guac
dessert: vanilla ice cream. I had that ice cream cookie last night and it was really not very satisfying. I could "taste" the "processing" in the cookie part, lol. So I want to remember that today. My premium vanilla ice cream - good dessert; ice cream cookie - subpar tasting "you're not worthy of me"
HOly cow - I ended up having another one of those ice cream cookies. Weirdly, I enjoyed it a lot more this time than yesterday.

Moving
Haven't been walking with HappyHerder. He's in the early throes of his joint relapse, and on high prednisone, so we are laying low. I guess I could go without him, but that just is weird for me.\
I've been playing around with my GMB program (I have two programs - Elements & Vitamin). This kind of stuff is perfect for me. I have been practicing the full wheel pose and the handstands. I am really really terrible at the wheel pose. I think I'm doing so great, and then I take a little video of myself doing it and I look ridiculous. So. It must be my new challenge. :-)

Other Stuff
I am taking a Basic Life Support CPR class next week. I am registering for a Nursing Assistant Certification class this summer. My students have to get their NAC and I figure I should see what it's like. It's only 4 weeks long in July. I'm looking forward to learning some hands-on skills for the first time in my life, really. I have very few practical life skills, which saddens me. I hope I can handle the nursing home smells and poop and dying people everywhere. It's a good challenge for me.

I was a NAC for 5 years. It's definitely not an easy job, but you do learn some skills from it. The hardest part for me was the people with cancer, or the people with dementia and/or Alzheimer's. I don't think I will ever do that job again. I was good at it, but it's really hard work, physically, mentally, and emotionally. Good luck to you and your students!

Actually, I'm a cashier in my small town's local and only grocery store. The one where donuts are freshly made from scratch every day. It might sound like a couple of steps down, but I love it. It's far less stressful, I'm five minutes from home, and I really like my coworkers. Plus, no poop, vomit, or blood. ;)

Just popping by to say hi, after being off the boards (ie. off the rails...) for a couple of weeks. Your life continues to sound rich and interesting, Auto. I was so delighted to read how your teaching session went so well - getting the students to evaluate their progress etc..They obviously have huge respect for you, and so they should! I also related to your musings about kids’ learned helplessness. I too feel I have been rather negligent as a parent, sort of permissive, failing to set all sorts of boundaries. But DD is self-motivated, independent, and has reasonable self-esteem. So unlike myself at her age....! I was zealously studious, abstemious, and an anxiety sufferer. She is none of these things, and I am glad of it.

Happy N days, hope your week goes well! x

Chanda - working close to home, liking the people you work with, low stress - sounds like a recipe for long life. Or at least some delicious donuts?

Octavia - your daughter is so special. And I bet you and her really laugh together and enjoy your time together (not always, of course- but my sense is that is probably a strength in your relationship). I'm working on "being nice" to my kids so when they are older they will still want to call me.

Hi Automated!

I was looking through your meals, and noticed they seem to be pretty low carb most of the time. When did you start eating that way? And curious about your why. 🙂

Hi Chanda!

I describe my way of eating as "moderated carbs". :-)

Unfortunately, I was diagnosed with prediabetes over a year ago. I made initial attempts to get rid of processed foods (so eating lots of "healthy whole-grains"), and lost maybe 2 or 3 pounds and saw no improvements in my blood sugars. So, I started to restrict my carbs further (not counting carbs, just eating meat and veggies mostly), and low and behold - weight started to fall off and my blood sugars went down into normal ranges. I still can't believe how easy it was. Makes me a little pissed that nutritionists and dieticians tell overweight and diabetic people to just eat more whole grains. For some of us, that just does not work. The genetically gifted can handle eating carbs all day, but some of us aren't genetically wired for constant access to carbs. What I find most interesting, in my case, is that my body seems to handle dairy carbs with aplomb - it's the bread carbs that make me gain weight. Go figure. Anyway, I'm all into biohacking and finding what works for our personal genetics. For me, I thrive on dairy, yet gain weight (and have joint pain and fatigue) when I eat wheat. Perhaps I have other sensitivities, but the wheat one is super clear after 9 months of fiddling with this.

Last point - whatever "carb level" someone ends up has to be sustainable. I've said this multiple times on my thread now (sorry - I'm a broken record), but I LOVE my meals. I don't feel deprived, I feel cared for and well-nourished.

And I still have my S's!!! Thank goodness I don't have full-blown diabetes! I regularly enjoy the premium ice cream they sell at Costco that somehow barely budges my blood sugar! I still can't figure that out but I am so grateful, because there is no other dessert that is as satisfying to me.

Oh, and Chanda - I just read your "why did you leave and then come back post"..... I should add I waited 5 long years before I started changing what was on my plate. I always said that NoS (in it simplest 3 meals a day approach) always kept me from gaining weight. And there's a lot to be said for that. So I don't think anyone should rush into their changing their eating habits. It took a health thing to get me finally committed to practicing the science I had been reading about for years.

Thanks for the response, Auto! I just read your five year testimonial, it's really interesting. I think I had read it a while ago, it just didn't stick in my head. I think I was trying to mentally block anything that mentioned any form of carb restriction due to the fact that I was so tired of restrictions. But I appreciate how you make it work for you and your needs.

I will definitely have to follow your tips about making NoS a sustainable habit before tweaking anything.

Also your tip about whole milk. 🙂 I drink decaf coffee with heavy cream when I'm getting a snacky moment, but I'll have to try a glass of milk next time.

Hey Chanda - I do the coffee thing in the afternoon sometimes too. It depends on how hungry I am, actually. If it's just a bit of boredom or temptation, coffee w/ a little milk works great. If I really am hungry, I have a cup of milk and savor each sip.

And I get your visceral reaction to avoid restrictions. I had the same thing for what I considered "healthy eating". I think I had gone overboard in my 20's, and so in my 30's I absolutely found myself rebelling against any sort of expectation to choose more wisely. I was especially annoyed by all my health-conscious friends and so I actually wanted to be the opposite. So I can see that if you went overboard with a particularly restrictive eating plan that you would totally want to stay away from those things now. We all have to find our path. We can't walk anyone else's. It's weird, though, that my eating doesn't feel AT ALL restrictive to me. Maybe that's how we know we've found our path. :-)

Happy Easter!
I do a clue-based scavenger hunt for each kid. I made Challenger's really hard this year. :-) He still flew through it. They are now happily chowing down on their baskets.

Eating
B: coffee w/milk, bacon & eggs
L: I will finish my chocolate bar and licorice from yesterday. Ended up eating these without really enjoying them - I was trying to help Challenger13 gets his account set up properly for a Fortnite tournament. I was so mad! I could not figure it out - and I had wanted today to be a day of rest. I found myself irritated and annoyed and frustrated and wanting to drink alcohol or eat junk food.

dessert: (will be) vanilla ice cream

Drinking

Peter Attia The Drive - been listening to three segments on Sleep -- all are phenomenal
The first one is: https://peterattiamd.com/matthewwalker1/
In part 1 of this 3 part series, Matthew Walker, professor of neuroscience at UC Berkeley and expert on sleep, describes the different stages, and cycles, of sleep, including what he calls the 4 pillars of sleep, and how they contribute to memory consolidation and numerous important pathways to mental health. We also get into the dangers of chronic sleep deprivation, such as the development of dementia, and the more acute dangers of sleep deprivation like fatal car crashes which are most often caused by drowsy driving. We also discuss the different and important roles of REM vs. non-REM sleep, and the impact that bad sleep habits can have specifically on those sleep stages.

The second one is: https://peterattiamd.com/matthewwalker2/
In part 2 of this 3 part series, Matthew Walker, professor of neuroscience at UC Berkeley and expert on sleep, describes the preponderance of evidence linking poor sleep to cardiovascular disease, cancer, and sexual function. He also details the impact of cortisol on our nervous system contributing to sleep disturbances and insomnia as well as the efficacy and risks associated with the most common sleeping pills. Matthew also describes the sleep needs of teenagers and urgently lays the case that we should reconsider school start times. We also get into the effect of electronics at night, the efficacy of napping, the general impact of modern society on our sleep habits, and what changes we can make to course correct.

Hi Auto,

I've been thinking about what you said. I just have a few questions, out of curiosity. And out of comparison, too. (I know, comparison is the thief of joy.)

When you say that you eat mostly meats and vegetables, do you include starchy veggies in that, like peas, corn, potatoes, squash? Do you find that they hinder weight loss? What about fruits, aside from berries? Apples, oranges, bananas, melons - basically every fruit that is a no-no on keto?

With the wheat issue, do you think it's a gluten thing? Do you have the same issues with gluten free?

I'm keeping moderate carbs in the back of my mind, for later on. Once I have the NoS habits firmly established, if I find my weight stalling, I may have to try your tactics.

Hi Chanda -

You know how some people need a LOT of variety in their diet? They enjoy experimenting with cooking and buying new ingredients? I'm not that person, so I can pretty much eat the same stuff every day.

So, part of my answer to you is that I found by meal-planning I have a "circuit" of meals that tend to be "moderate carb".

I don't really ever eat peas or squash - before NoS, I joke that I ate like a teenager, so don't think I'm avoiding them because they are banned foods or something. Potatoes I adore and I have trouble eating "just one portion", so in general I save them for weekends. Corn and green beans I sometimes have a small portion with my dinner. No problems there. BTW, if I liked peas or squash, I'd do the same thing there.

I eat apples on weekends, because apples are a snack food to me. If I really want one as part of an N Day meal, I slice it up and put it on the plate. But I want more substantial stuff at meal time, I guess. Bananas I save for weekends, and usually they are part of a spread I make for the kids - sliced apples, bananas, and some veggies & ranch that everybody snacks on.

Wheat - I doubt it's really a gluten thing, but I have got to say nothing bloats me up like a piece of pizza (lol which of course I still eat on the weekend). I've never tried gluten free or any of those "flour" substitutes. My first change in early 2018 was to just eat real foods. I've never been attracted to the "make keto cupcakes" or that stuff - probably because I don't really like cooking/baking anyway and so it doesn't do much for me. In summary, I think something about wheat is particularly irritating to my gut and/or my metabolism. Wheat makes my blood sugar go much higher than ice cream, for example! Weird!

I guess that's a long answer to your question. I really come back to finding meals that taste good and don't make my blood sugar go wonky. Oh, and I get a lot of carbs from dairy, so if that's not something you insist on having everyday like my strange self, you could have a sandwich or something with a similar moderate carb count. Whatever it would be, I think you should love it.

Boring eaters have an easier time of it in the weight-maintenance world. It's the variety lovers that suffer! My dad is a boring eater, an "automated" eater. I named myself after his habits when I started this in 2013.

Eating
B: coffee w/milk
L: yogurt w/berries
D: (will be) pork chops & salad + glass of milk

Drinking
Abs Day Longer Stretch
I've been adding a glass of milk after dinner as a stand-in for my wine. Not quite the same, har har, but it's helping.

Moving
Walk/Jog w/HappyHerder

Reading
Chapter 7 of The Hobbit. They are in horrible Mirkwood.

PersonalLearning
Working on a daily meditation habit. Sort of. I'm not putting a lot of pressure to get this right, but I need something before bed to help me relax since I'm not drinking. Milk & Meditation - that's what I'll call it. LOL! Anyway, the last two nights I listened to these ones:
https://youtu.be/dXn-7ydmK38
It is called Shelter in the Shire, a Middle Earth based meditation!!! Ha! Anyway, I think I do better with visualization meditations (kind of like a story) instead of the "blank your mind" meditations. I suck at that and then give up. This is more like an escape than work. Oh! Yes! That's what it is! Meditation normally feels like work to me. I work enough everyday at a million things and I'm so not up to extra. But I know I need to calm my mind, and so these are very good for me. There are at least 12 in this series.

I had to try the Middle Earth meditation, I love LOTR. 😁 It's really cute, more like a guided daydream. I could hear the sheep "baa"-ing down in the copse of trees.

Chanda - I am just loving those meditations too! Last night Creator and I listened together and I fell asleep at the end, just as Gandalf was leaving. :-)

Eating
B: coffee w/milk
L: (will be) yogurt w/berries
D: (will be) probably junk - I'm going to CPR training and they have pizza. Or maybe I could go home and make something real quick before it starts. I'll see how I'm feeling.

Drinking
Abs Days
I have been fighting a raging headache the last couple of days and I'm embarrassed to say it might be alcohol withdrawal. Or at least that the lack of alcohol is meaning that my normal neck and back tension is rebounding in fiendishly painful amounts. :?
The Middle Earth Meditations are helping, though. Overall I am more irritable and more impatient as I try to deal with life without alcohol.
Last night I ran into someone at a sport practice drop-off and got pulled into conversation. I normally would have wanted to drink after having to chat like that. omg I am such an introvert. I don't think it makes sense, even to me. I talk so much. I am weird.

Oh no, sorry to hear about the headaches! Good luck with your alcohol holdback. I'll share my short and boring personal story only because I just did it and I get somewhat what you're going through. :)

I took most of Lent to avoid alcohol, which I avoided successfully for 5 whole, long, weeks. :) I didn't get any headaches, but I had to control the urge and find other stress relievers, often not finding anything other than zoning out in front of the TV or internet. I did feel slightly better though after a while, but it was hard to tell because there was also a lot of sickness going on.

Good luck Auto!!!

Eating
B: coffee w/milk
L: yogurt w/berries
D: date night: had a delicious steak taco salad with a chipotle ranch dressing. It was awesome.

Drinking
Abs Day. Made it yesterday but had a (planned) bowl of ice cream last night. I'm choosing sugar over alcohol during these rougher days. Lesser of 2 evils kind of thing. Did another Middle Earth meditation yesterday. They are super helpful for taking my mind off of school/work.
Update - date night & had wine.

121.8

Eating
B: coffee w/milk
L: tortilla chips w/guacamole
D: dinner with friends - homemade pizza

Drinking
Failed yesterday, back on the wagon today - eeks, wine at friends. Not sure why I didn't think there would be wine and of course I didn't turn it down. :?

I'm kind of in a rough place mentally. I'm extremely tired and working too much - burning the candle at both ends, as they say. I have been having headaches every single day. Yesterday I forgot to bring a friend's kid home from track practice  The coach had to wait with him. That is bad enough - but this is the SECOND time it has happened. Shameful/do I have a disease? :?

You are overloaded, maxed out, etc. It is that time of the year for teachers and families. I remember feeling like I was one of those circus performers trying to keep all the plates spinning! My husband taught Freshman English classes in university. He used to say at first he tried to get his students not to use cliches and trite expressions, but then he decided he would settle if they would just use them correctly. One of the more amusing ones was "burning the candle with both hands." I actually can identify!

Tex - your post made me laugh! That is great!

Liveitup - thanks! We actually had a really nice time and it was more stress-relieving than I'd expected. We had really good conversation. It was one of our few "couple friends" and we've been friends for many years now. I am probably more myself with them than most any other friends we have. So it wasn't too taxing.

Huh - there's a good thought. Perhaps I should just "BE MYSELF" more of the time, and then I would be less exhausted by social interactions.....?

Saturday, April 27

Eating
B: coffee w/milk, 1/2 a cinnamon roll this morning
L: tortilla chips w/guacamole
second lunch?: nachos
D: 2 chocolate-covered macadamia nuts
dessert: probably ice cream, but we are cleaning up after an fundraiser auction tonight and I kind of wonder if there will be fancy desserts leftover and I can get one of those.

Drinking
Abs Day
I keep circling round the idea that I need to give up alcohol for good. I wake up in the morning after I've had wine (I don't get drunk, but it still decreases my productivity, disrupts my sleep, makes me less involved with my kids, and sets a bad example for them). It's a vicious cycle and I've had another aha- moment where I realize my cycle with food matches many NoSers on this forum. It makes me think "food use disorder" like "alcohol use disorder" is a real thing. It's the same cycle of promising ourselves we won't do "it", then slowly rationalizing until we decide to do "it", then feeling guilty, then starting the cycle again.

I have been trying to get moderation on my drinking off and on for years. Whereas NoS Eating (and some of my other "systems") fall into place really well, the drinking one eludes my mastery. I keep thinking - I JUST need to find balance, like I do with food. Well, maybe THAT'S NOT POSSIBLE FOR ME. Or maybe it would be if it was the ONLY thing I needed to focus on, but I am so busy that I don't have the bandwidth to focus all my effort on moderating my alcohol successfully. I did do really well from the last part of December until the first part of March, but since then it's been a mess again.

I keep finding my thoughts getting mixed up with thinking about my friends on this forum that often try to moderate their weekends and repeatedly get discouraged. Holy heck, do I know that feeling! But it is about alcohol instead of food. I'm starting to understand why having S Days at all can derail a person. With alcohol, it certainly is easier on many levels to never have it, because if I have it one night, I want some the next night too.

BUT....if a person were to give up sweets ENTIRELY and FOREVER (like someone giving up drinking) the chances of failure are very high. Argh, similar to the failure of alcohol. Which poses a far greater terror for probably everyone reading this. Is there any solution?

We have to assess:
1. Is the issue in question one where we have been living with the "vicious cycle" (resist, give in, guilt, rinse and repeat)? If so, it is a use disorder (by Auto's definition, haha)
2. If is a use disorder, we need to recognize it will not fall obediently into line with the simple rules of NoS.
3. So. We can try various approaches:
A. Give up the particular vice forever. Sugar. Alcohol. Chocolate. We have to figure out specifically what
the "trigger" item is - what specifically is it that we cannot moderate (unlike many other things in our life that
we CAN moderate).
B. Try various moderation approaches. One a day of the item. Spread out S events. Completely free S Days
without guilt, but super strict abstinence on N Days. As I type this, I am reminded that many of my forum
friends have suggested I make alcohol an S, and I have never (to my memory) tried that. Sort of a duh.
C. Decide how we will feel about failed moderation approaches. I console myself that even if it ends up not
being a good fit, at least it curtailed what would have been daily drinking otherwise.
D. At some point, we will either find what works for us (finally!) or we will maybe circle back around to
option A, which is where I am sort of sitting this morning. But I'm glad I typed all of this because I think I
have one more option to try - the "S" one.
