Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

Ha, funny about creator. My girls have been coming on some of my dog walks too. It’s so nice to have more time to do stuff together and so good for our kids to experience a little boredom.

Nice walk this morning, although I was annoyed that there was someone else on the lower (normally uninhabited & muddy) trails with 2 dogs ON LEASH. That trail is one of the only places in my suburban world where I can let my dogs run. Sigh. Just another adjustment required by the pandemic.

Yes, more people are outside trying to get a break from being indoors all the time! Hopefully you'll generally hit a quiet time when you get on that trail.

Already at 13ksteps and it's only 9:30am. :-) Made it to 18k today

Just went and read other threads and realized I'm CRANKY this morning. I want to walk with the dogs, but I don't want them to be extra "work" (bad behaviors, etc). I want to get my schoolwork done, but I don't want anyone to interrupt my videos. I want I want I want. I think I need an attitude adjustment!!! I have so much to be grateful for. I need to just settle myself.

Stayed in this morning to get more work done before walking. Then I'll just walk the dogs separately throughout the day today. Early morning is the only "safe" time to take both of them. The rest of the day there are tons of people out walking and it's too difficult to manage them both. Flowerpup barks at strangers and HappyHerder whines, cries, and pulls at the leash to get to say hello to EVERYONE. So one is overly friendly and one is overly frightened. OMG. If I take them individually I can work the training protocols (basically food chucking lol) and prevent their bad behaviors.

One fun thing I'm doing for my classes (online now) is reading my Case Studies out loud for the students, giving hints, highlights, and little diagrams to help them make connections. We ordinarily would work these in class together in groups. I'm sad to miss out on that but it's actually been fun to do these case study readings. I hope the students find them helpful. It's a really new approach, that's for sure.

It sounds interesting what you are doing with your classes. Sounds like you are getting really creative. It's definitely been an adjustment as a student to going online for a class that is not made to be online, I bet your students appreciate all the effort you are putting into making things fun and interesting for them.

We shall see! Classes start Tuesday and I'm completely burnt out. What with the weird end to winter quarter, and spending all of spring break prepping, I'm completely feeling a need to NOT WORK for a few days. Ugh. But so much still to be done.

Washington State just extended the Stay Home Order until May 4th.

Oh! I didn't realize you hadn't gone back yet. I went back this Monday.

Did your school have a super short winter break too? Our school and the local university had a 3-week break for students and only 2 weeks for professors! I felt like I barely got a break and I have been feeling burnt out all semester long. I am sorry you had to spend spring break prepping and not relaxing. Hopefully, once everything gets up and going online, it will be easier and you will feel like it is less work. I am counting down the days until this semester ends though, which for me is May 3. Does yours go longer?

My quarter doesn't end until the middle of June!

And although I am setting things up feverishly, I'm starting to fear that I'm setting myself up for masses of grading - and grading that requires careful and thoughtful feedback in order to be useful for students. So my workload will actually increase because I'll still be prepping at the same time I'm leading live conferences and grading in-depth assignments. Ugh.

However, I woke up this morning invigorated. Actually by bedtime last night I was feeling pretty good. I am so fortunate to have a job I (generally) love and that is stable during this tumultous time. I have several relatives and friends that are nurses and doctors, and I see what their jobs are like right now! So not only do I have job security, but also I am not on the front lines dealing with this pandemic. I am so fortunate.

My natural tendency toward routine and structure is also helpful. I like to work, so I'm not sure why I am afraid of having a lot of it, LOL. I can handle this! I have 9 more case studies to record; I'm trying to do 1 a day. I've finished 10 so far. I'm really pleased so far with how they are coming together and I think the students will enjoy them. So 1 of those a day, and then like Pinkie said, they'll be done and set up for the quarter. I also have about 40 more practice quizzes to write. I am making them interactive and covering all the main topics of each week, so those will probably take me the remainder of the quarter, and I'll barely be ahead of the students! Some of you may remember that I do a sort of unusual class format - no formal testing. Students submit progress reports documenting their time investment and what they studied each day. They take assessments each week and grade them on their own, just to see how they are doing (rather than an official "score"). I have written quizzes for each of my topics, quizlets for each topic, and now I'm adding these practice quizzes. So that way students can test themselves in 3 different styles on each topic and unit. I've been developing this class structure for 3 quarters, and I do feel it lends itself toward the jump online. That said, it's not the same trying to do live conferences versus being in a classroom together.

Physically, I've set a goal for 15k steps (or more) for each day in April! I'm also going to do my bodyweight exercises religiously each day. No reason not to get ripped during the pandemic.

Reading about all the introverts on our forum is so funny. I think many of us lean that way and like to write quietly and spend a lot of time introspecting. I was just wondering if part of what makes parenting hard for me is ALL THE SOCIAL OBLIGATIONS!!!!! When the kids were little, I would literally drink wine IN PREPARATION for the next damnable party. I hated them and kind of felt dread and sickness in having to go. For kid events at their schools, I would drink before those too (don't worry - Sexy drove me). And then I'd drink more when I got home. And then they need me to take them shopping, need me to sign them up for things. All of it was just often too much for me. Since I quit drinking (almost a year ago!), I've learned to cope with these events primarily through listening to podcasts on the way to and from, and then trying to practice mindfulness while at the actual event. I've made some progress.

But my main point is that parenting during social isolation is, ironically, easier for me.

Wow mid June! I guess you have a little longer to go. That is great that your developed class structure lends itself towards online. It's interesting to hear about all the work you as a professor have to do. It sounds like you are doing a great job supporting your students though.

Oh yes! I am sooooooo happy no soccer practices, games, concerts, school activities, family night, etc... Aren't happening anymore. If I had ever gotten into drinking alcohol, I know I would be using that for sure as a coping mechanism. I think I got into overeating instead. Those are just the worst, having to talk to other parents and teachers. Soccer games are totally draining especially because sometimes it's not a friendly environment with the parents of the other team.

Also, I realized yesterday that I NEED introspective time where I just focus on myself and what is going on. A lot of times I like to re-read old journals and look at what I learned about myself since I last wrote in them. It's weird but I think it's actually a very vital form of self-maintenance for me. I had been very lacking in that for a while and life had gotten a lot harder, like interactions with kids and husband.

Interesting thoughts on all the introverts here. I'm a mix for sure. Love to contemplate and write, but also love to socialize. I definitely get my recharge by being by myself though. I'm glad you've found some great new options for managing your stress these days.

Very much relate auto. I realized that the only times I overdo it with the drinking is in social situations. At home, it’s not uncommon for me to leave unfinished glasses of wine around e house. That would never happen when I’m out in a social setting. I think I drink to try to be more outgoing than I really am. Maybe I need to realize it’s okay to be quiet sometimes. I’m a great listener!

So glad you’re enjoying some time to be introspective. I swear I think my decision to stay at home has a lot to do with my need for alone time. 😊

It was a hard day. I started off with my usual school prep, and the case I was explaining took longer than normal - taxed me, I think. Then I received an email from a disgruntled student that really doesn't like my (unusual) class structure and definitely doesn't trust me yet. I was shaking with anxiety/fear/something after reading it and had to start my first live class 10 minutes later. So I compartmentalized and pushed on. Then the boys and dogs were more wild than normal (or at least it seemed that way!) and I finally had to ask my class to wait while I put one dog upstairs and asked Creator to please stop trying to make me laugh while I was teaching. It was SOOOO hard to know how much to talk, what to focus on, etc., without making eye contact with all of them and being together in a room. Then in the next class, the disgruntled student made known her concerns in front of the whole class. I was amazed that I handled it so well; and frankly, proud of myself. Definitely something that I couldn't have handled so well as a young teacher. I paused.... gathered myself (for probably 15 seconds!! which is a long time on camera), then decided to start at the beginning. I told her (and the whole class, because I knew what was really at stake was their trust) about how my teaching philosophy has evolved over the past 20 years, and that I no longer consider learning a purely intellectual exercise.... etc etc. Used the opportunity to share how much I care about my students' learning, and for those reasons I've shifted many things in my class to maximize learning and minimize stress. Anyway, it was quite a little speech, but it must have waiting inside of me for its chance, because it all came out smoothly. By the end, I doubt I had done anything to win over the student that is not pleased with me, but I felt (just a gut feeling) like I had the rest of the class on my side. Even if that's not the case, I was true to myself, stayed calm, was honest and sincere with them. But whoa! What a way to start day 1!!!! Then after classes were over, I was ITCHING to get moving and I busted it outside for 2 hours with Flowerpup. But then I ate chocolate. LOL. So some good coping and some bad coping.

Auto, I think you did an absolutely MARVELOUS job handling that situation!! You should feel so proud of yourself for being so authentic and real with them. If the student still doesn't like it, I bet they respect you for speaking your piece. Really, really well done. Chocolate, shmocolate. Don't worry about it. You did a big thing!

Auto wow!

Im sorry that happened to you on your first day. I agree with Alene, it sounds like you really handled that well. One of my teachers is always emphasizing how now that we are online we all need to work together and have empathy on all sides. I realize now he probably means for us to give him a little grace as well, as this is a difficult time. I think sometimes some students just think of professors as authority figures to be challenged, rather than human beings.

That is great that you were able to deliver that speech so well to your students right at the beginning of the rest of the online instruction though. It sounds like you gained their trust, so now hopefully the rest of the days will be smoother.

Wow, you handled that so graciously. You are brave and strong and should be super proud of yourself. Also, I could be wrong but sounds like that student is kind of an ass. I’m sure the other students picked up on that.

Thanks everyone for the support. Things are going better. I continue to remind myself I am fortunate to have a job right now, and I'm thankful that my family is safe and healthy, and I'm grateful that my job is one that I can do from home, despite this difficult transition. I had trouble sleeping last night and popped out of bed early this morning, full of new ideas for how to improve the quality of my online classes. Some of the ideas were fairly simple to implement, and I saw improvements already today. I will continue to work at it. I'm developing new skills. I feel like a very young teacher, though!

Glad you were able to bounce back from that so quickly and you were able to focus on the positive. People keep asking me if I’m worried because doc is working so much less with elective surgeries being cancelled. I’m like no I’m just so grateful he’s able to keep his job. So many ppl out of work and really struggling. One “friend” even scolded me for continuing to pay my cleaning lady even though she’s not coming right now, because she was worried about my financial situation. But that’s a tangent for another time. 🙄

Linda, I hadn't thought about that - Doc working less right now! I foolishly lumped all the healtcare workers together and assumed they were all working extra. I'm sorry I did that. These times are bringing unexpected changes for virtually everyone. And we humans are creatures of habit, so change is tough.

ZivaMeditation
AM - check 6am; at the end of meditation, I am supposed to spend a couple minutes "manifesting", where I imagine my dreams have come true. :-) I don't always do this, but when I do - I focus on three things: 1) how my life would feel if I didn't get anxious; 2) how I would feel if I were perfectly comfortable walking around naked with my aging body and gray hair (ironically even though I'm now what I'd consider strong and yet slim, I'm more self-conscious recently about my turkey neck; crepey skin; saggy boobs, and gray hair); 3) how I would feel if I were able to consistently love my job and roll with the parts I don't love as much (this sort of rolls back to #1)
PM - check 2:30pm

Eating
B: coffee w/cream, 1 cutie, 3 hard-boiled eggs
L: yogurt w/berries
D: salmon patty, 1 cutie
decaf coffee w/cream

Feeling a bit fed up with the cookie-cave-ins. My family is always making cookies and most of the time I am not tempted. But in times of stress/quarantine (ha!), I've been having more fails. Now, on the bright side, these aren't binge fails. I seem to do a "climber's arrest" before it gets ugly; that wasn't the case in January when HH bit FP and I was super stressed. That stress is still recent enough that I remember how silly it felt to use food to try to feel better. Such a short-term fix - basically like taking drugs but it's socially acceptable. OK, so back to the cookie cave-ins. As probably many of you have read, metabolic health is huge when it comes to staying healthy and surviving COVID. With my pre-diabetes tendencies, it is of the utmost importance that I avoid blood sugar spikes from bad food. So my very health is at stake here. Plus, I'm just tired of having made good choices throughout the day, then having a damn cookie and going to bed with elevated blood sugar. I am sabotaging my own health goals.

Oh, also I'm avoiding dark chocolate. I was starting to have a few squares every night but it was giving me headaches! Sure enough, after removing the chocolate, no more headaches. Weird but I think I'll have to find another indulgence.

MovingGoals
15k + steps - check

bike ride w/Creator - check

Yesterday my bike got a flat tire (Challenger rode it and he rides HARD). Anyway, I had to get the flat fixed (2nd time in 2 weeks!), and so while at the bike store I bought another bike for the family. Creator's old one barely works and it's too small for him but he is a sweetheart and has never complained. And my old bike - well Challenger has broken parts off it (yes he rides INTENSELY, as he does everything in his life) several times and I wasn't up for another repair overhaul on it. So, in summary we now have 2 good bikes and 1 barely working bike and 1 completely broken bike. :-) But 2 that we can take turns on will work great. The weather is really getting warmer here in the spring. Expected to be 61 today. Because of COVID, you have to wait outside at the bike store until your turn to be helped. They do a really nice job at that store under these circumstances, actually; I'm impressed. And luckily I am a fast decision maker and just pointed out 2 different bikes in my price range, asked the guy a couple questions, and then bought the bike without a test ride or any extra time in the store. Probably in and out in under 5 minutes. Then I just waited outside for the bikes to be ready and off I went.

I'm glad it's Saturday. The last few weekends I have treated the same as the rest of the week, since I'm working from home. But today I want to really let myself (mostly) just rest from work. Tomorrow I can get back at it.
Oh, and tomorrow is Easter. Haha I guess I'll need to make the obligatory store trip tonight to prep Easter Baskets. Linda - if you are reading this - I'm pretty sure you don't make Easter baskets. LOL lucky you.... but can you imagine if this all happened during Hanukkah? Honestly I'm glad I don't have to make a big deal out of Easter this year. But my kids would be heartbroken if I didn't do their Easter baskets.

Yeah easter has got to be difficult this year and of course you don't want to let down the kids. Sorry you’re not feeling as body positive as you would like. I see your weight and immediately think you mist feel fabulous all the time. I relate to the neck thing so much. When I lost all my weight my neck area really suffered. I even went so far as getting botox in my neck and i hate hate needles. And i dye my hair and will probably always do so. I used to feel weird about being a feminist and caving into social beauty standards but Im just embracing my vanity at this point. ☺️

Sunday, April 12 - EASTER!

Obviously doesn't feel like Easter. Oh well. I'm actually fine with that and I really went all out on some amazing Easter baskets for the boys.

Don't feel like doing much of anything today - feel like I have a hangover, and I think, once again, I can pin it on chocolate. Last night I had a "sugar free chocolate" and woke up again with a headache. Like what the? Do I have a chocolate thing? I think I might. Plus those stupid "sugar free chocolates" actually make my blood sugar go up quite a bit (dark chocolate doesn't). But I have them in the pantry so I'll work my way through them I guess. Then I'm done with chocolate. It is not working for me!

ZivaMeditation
AM - check 6:20am
PM - check 1pm

Eating
B: coffee w/cream, 3 hard-boiled eggs, 1 cutie
L: yogurt w/berries
D: 2 hard-boiled eggs, another sugar free chocolate (fingers crossed I don't get a headache)
decaf coffee w/cream
Easter sweets I stole from kids' baskets: 3 sour candies, 1 licorice, 1 starburst

Moving

Bike ride w/Creator - check, although I had to ride his old dirtbike (quite the picture) because my bike's tire is flat AGAIN. I do not know what the deal is. i got it fixed Friday night and it was flat again by Saturday mid-day, just sitting in the garage. Today I pumped it back up again and it was flat again in 20 min.

Happy Easter! That is so nice that you did baskets for your boys. That is a tradition I never got around to doing. Maybe next year. We do dye eggs and have an easter egg hunt though. Well, not this year. I was like "no kids! Eggs are precious"... It's still hard to get eggs at the store.

My husband has also started getting headaches after eating chocolate just in the past year... it's pretty weird. I hope you feel better!

Wow, you had 2 hard boiled eggs instead of pizza!? You must really feel better when you don't eat it huh?

I am pretty sure I do not have sufficient motivation for that. :) My husband loves pizza and I do get tired of it sometimes but it is very tempting when its here.

1 legged squats sound pretty hard core!

pinkie - I DO feel so much better when I avoid the processed foods. They only give VERY momentary pleasure. But I give in sometimes too! It is dependent upon my emotional state and how well I've planned to nourish my body for that day.

My 1-legged squats are ..... um.... in the "development" phase, shall we say? :-) I need support and don't go down all the way while in the 1-legged phase. But.... I'm building up and someday it will be beautiful, ha!

Alene, yes, I feel like I AM being creative in approaching this situation. As far as the most difficult student situation is going, she is doing better now (her emails are less frequent and less caustic). I feel like I have won her over (enough) in terms of her respecting my organization, enthusiasm, and content-knowledge. I feel that she will never be won over in terms of feeling that the world is against her. She seems a sad woman, perpetually seeing her cup as half empty. But I also sense she is exquisitely sensitive and wants to save that very world she feels is against her.

Flowerpup and her cousin CurlyGirl both turn 5 months old today! Flowerpup is pure sleek black. If you've ever seen a field cocker spaniel, I think she looks exactly like that. A similar look is a flat-coated retriever. She is really quite striking. People are always wondering what she is, because at first glance they want to think lab and then realize that is not a good fit for her at all (feathered tail, longer, wavy hair, smaller head, bigger and slightly curly-haired ears). I thought she would have long hair like my Aussie, but instead her longish hair seems to completely comform against her body. It will be interesting to see how she looks in a few more months and if that long hair starts looking more shaggy (which is a look I love, so I'm cool with that!). She is an utter delight and I am so grateful that we have her and that I overcame my anxieties from the first few weeks.

decaf coffee w/cream

Got a puzzle done today (I do 300 piece ones that can be done in a day like this); got bills paid and some student recommendations done that have been weighing on me.

Linda, it was a nice day! The only thing I didn't do (that I really like to) was go on a bike ride with Creator. Today! I think I mentioned I got my bike tire fixed (again) so we are ready to roll. I also can't remember if I had said that I've been having to ride on Creator's old BMX dirt bike - it is a hilarious sight to behold and my butt gets literal bruises. I like for him to get to ride the nice new bike with gears. The poor kid has always had the hand-me-down bikes and then one nice one we got him was stolen a couple years ago. He's thrilled to use a gear bike and it just gives me a better workout to go up hills without gears, LOL. Remember our techniques we would use as little kids? A) go as flipping fast as you can to get up speed before the hill; B) make snake-like turns when you start to slow down; C) stop and walk and whine like a baby when you can't keep going. Ha! Luckily I only have to get to B usually; our neighborhood is delightfully flat (which is awesome because our town in general is very hilly).

I'm trying to decide how much schoolwork to do/not do today. I think I should do like yesterday - do a bit in the morning (now) and then a bit more in the evening but leave the middle of the day free for myself and the family. Tomorrow I will be buried so I want to pace myself. The assignments are due tonight and so I wake up to a crapload pile - 9 hours of grading. Probably a class-design miscalculation on my part, but for their part, I think the assignments are truly worthy of their time and that they get a LOT out of them. I just need a clone. I'm also hoping that they will improve their writing. Editing their writing takes SO long. I know we are all casual in the forum, in our texting, in our emails. But when you turn in a formal paragraph to a teacher, please use complete sentences.

Sunday, April 19

121.4 pounds
Resting HR: 69 (wondering if this cyclic resting HR is related to my menstrual cycle or my salt intake... thinking that perhaps when it is lower corresponds to when I'm having more salt and my body doesn't have to work so hard to pump my blood around because my fluid volume is higher.... just a new thought I'm noodling on)
morning BP: 105/65 - normally so happy about this but recently considering that my low BP is why my resting HR is sometimes as high as 74. Before I changed my diet (in 2018) my average morning BP was about 135/88. It was concerning, especially in my 30's. Diet fixed it so much! But now I'm wondering if I'm having some negative counter-effects as my body tries to maintain a healthy blood pressure. Anyway, just thinking. Might need to supplement salt more mindfully. UPDATE! Just spent $45 (of my pandemic check, haha) on a 30-day supply of LMNT Recharge, an electrolyte supplement. I've looked at it before, and always waved it off because it is too expensive! But I'm going to try a 30-day experiment and see if it has any effect on my resting HR.
Sleep Score: 88 - I feel like I haven't been sleeping that well, even though my scores are good. Headache last night and this morning, most likely because of that stupid chocolate I had to have. I'd like a nice splurgy food to indulge with that doesn't give me a hangover. Is that so much to ask? Maybe I need to bring back the weekend ice cream.

ZivaMeditation
AM - oh no! I totally forgot this morning! How did that happen?! I was on like 70 day streak or something like that.
PM - 3pm

Eating
B: coffee w/cream ...... (please help me resist the cinnamon rolls that Sexy bought yesterday and that are sitting on the counter. Not only should I not eat one (can anyone predict my blood sugar after that?! - it will easily go up to 160mg/dL), but the boys will want me to help them cut and warm them so I get a really good look and have to smell them. I think cinnamon rolls may be one of my most tempting foods that rock my health - BG spike, headache, and then ravaged by desires for more of the same kinds of food. Donuts used to be the biggest temptation. I think I've made progress with them. Pizza, fries, those are still tough. Ice cream used to be a regular/daily temptation but Sexy has it EVERY night and I barely even notice other than an inner shock that he can eat a pile of ice cream w/whipped cream w/ a cookie and not gain a pound.......
L: yogurt w/berries
D: 2 eggs

Cinnamon rolls are my weakness too! Donuts were too until I started buying donuts just for myself every time I went to the store. I eventually got sick of donuts.
My husband has ice cream every single night too. He eats really different than me.

Your sleep scores are amazing! No matter how much sleep I get, mine almost never get above 82.

The supplement sounds interesting. I have recently learned to add some salt to my coffee which really seems to help me, not sure if its an electrolyte thing or not. I will be interested in your experiment.

Hah! I forgot about the snake-like turns to try to preserve speed. Ahh the good ol' days. :) I live in a super hilly area ( The Ozark mountains) so hills on bikes are a way of life out here.

Auto, its weird, I know part of my poor sleep score is my apparent waking up at night for about an hour spread out, but last night I actually got 7 hours and 51 minutes, yet my sleep score is 81. Maybe I need to adjust my target bedtime... I think you lose points for going to bed after your target bedtime.

Yes, the green stars! I don't get those very often. :D

Is FBG your fasting blood glucose? Is 90 mg considered a good score? I don't know much about it. Sorry if you have explained previously.

How do you guys get sleep scores? Do you have to sleep with a device on your wrist or something? Im sure mine would be terrible. I wake up in the middle of the night with night sweats and stay awake for awhile. Menopause oh joy. Luckily i still don't feel tired during the day.

Hi Linda!

For me I wear my fitbit HR Inspire on my wrist. At first, it was weird and a little hard to sleep but now I don't even notice. The band is pretty soft. I also used to sleep with a watch on my wrist too so I think I am just used to sleeping with something on my wrist.

I have woken up with night sweats too and where I feel burning hot. My feet are on fire, and my whole body is hot but I can tell that the environment is cool. The nice thing about not leaving the house anymore is I can sleep in on nights that happens.

Pinkie - 90mg/dL is a great blood glucose for me! Typically (like this morning) it's more like 100mg/dL.

Linda - It's our fitbits! They give sleep scores now, providing you wear it at night. :-) They break down the sleep into: deep sleep, REM, light, and awake. I've read that they are actually reasonably accurate! Anyway, just another thing to track. My coworker told me she doesn't want to track her sleep because then she's afraid she'll start messing with the good sleep she has. Good point! If it's not broke, don't fix it!

Hi Pinkie - sometimes I have bone broth, but yesterday I had something my husband bought at Costco - Orgain Keto - it has collagen proteins and a little bit of MCT oil. It has a chocolate flavor with artificial sweetener.

Today is a big day. I am bringing down the electronics hammer. I went into Challenger's room this morning and got out his headphones, his Xbox remotes, his phone, and his laptop. I put everything at a charging station in my bedroom. He is still sleeping and unaware that the dragon woke during the night and came to a decision. I consider him like a heroin addict. My husband and I have let his electronics addiction grow (as his laziness has grown and his kindness has continually diminished) and we are afraid to disturb him with rules for fear that he will harm himself or others if he loses his electronics. This is not a spoken fear - he has not said anything and I don't mean to alarm anyone with that statement, but I also don't want to fool myself that he won't say things like how he wants to die if he can't have his electronics. But I think it has to be done. If you are reading this and have an 8 year old boy...... I so hope you don't end up in my situation. I was REALLY good with electronic rules and charts when the kids were little, but Challenger has been true to his name at every step of the game, and by the time he was 13 I had reached my exhaustion stage and threw in the towel. But in the past year of unfettered electronics, I have seen how horrible it becomes when (some) kids are not regulated. So..... it is going to be volcanic around here today.

I thought about calling a friend or a sister. I ended up not doing that for fear I wouldn't get the support I need. I decided to put it here. LOL, y'all are always supportive. I need that right now. Not a speck of doubt can sneak in or I will not do this.

New Rules for Challenger - (fun) electronics allowed from 3pm - 9pm M - F; 12pm - 9pm Sat/Sun. This includes his phone. These rules will hold until June 4, when school is out for the year. Then we can re-evaluate. I will keep the electronics in my bedroom to make sure these rules are honored. (His phone already turns off at 9pm, but just to keep it simple - all of them in our room at 9pm).

Good for you auto!

I sympathize and agree. For my 17 year old, believe it or not, all her electronics get plugged in in our room at 9:30 pm every night. 10:30 on the weekends. She is not allowed to have her electronics in her room overnight. And during the school days she isn't allowed to have her phone M-Thurs after school. So before school stopped being in person that was 4: 45 pm to bedtime. Obviously, with school being at home now the daytime rules have shifted a bit but there are still rules. And in the beginning, when she was about 15, when we first took away her phone during the week she did say stuff about not wanting to live, and she was SUPER SUPER mad at us. However, as she got older we taught her about process addiction and how even adults have a hard time with this stuff and by the time she was a junior in high school she was telling us that she thought she shouldn't have her phone at school because she was addicted to it. So all this to say that it can get better, even though it might be rough at first.

I think your rules are really reasonable and that Challenger is a lucky kid. (even though he might not feel that way when he gets upset about his electronics)

So all this talking about my kid is just to hopefully help illustrate that you are not alone and it sounds like you are absolutely doing the right thing. Sending you support!

Pinkie - just like your suggestions for Linda (about the leash, etc) were encouraging for her with Cupcake, your detailed description was very helpful (and validating) for me! Thank you!!! I'm actually totally open to 9:30 or 10:30pm stop times, but I need something I can enforce and I go to bed at 9pm! (And Sexy stays up late, but he is not an enforcer, bless his "good cop" heart).

Linda, thank you for your support. I really appreciate it and need it right now.

So I declared today an S Day, and have thoroughly enjoyed it. A chocolate chip cookie, tortilla chips & dip, a lava cake. I really enjoyed these treats, which is not always the case.

Sounds like you gave yourself a wonderful and much needed rest day auto! That is so great that you were able to recognize that you needed a break and then give yourself what you needed. I really struggle with that. If you don't mind me asking, what novel did you read? Inquiring bookworm would like to know. :)

Hi Pinkie! I've been reading so many psychological thrillers, free on my kindle unlimited. :-)
None of them are that great, honestly, but they've been entertaining and help me unwind. Abandon, When She Returned, The Silent Patient (actually, this one was pretty good!), some others I can't remember titles for right now.

So today. Monday. Good day overall. Mostly ate well but just failed with a cookie. Should have eaten more at dinner I think. Got in over 18,000 steps. Got in my meditations. Did great work this morning before lunch, but then my productivity tanked. I ended up throwing in the towel and going on a long walk. Back at it in the morning. My students write 2 paragraph summaries of medical case studies each week. I have been editing their writing, but there are 65 of them and I just can't keep doing this every week (they also have other work I am grading). Plus, I don't think many of them read my feedback. Last week I offered everyone a 10% grade increase if they revised their work based on my feedback and resubmitted. Only about 15% of the students took me up on it, so I think that my hours of trying to give them good writing edits is probably not the greatest use of my time. So this week, I am asking them before I grade who wants to revise and resubmit. So far about 10 have said yes. I told the class this way I'll more simply grade all the rest, and then focus my editing on the students that already know that have time/interest to revise/resubmit. Thanks auto! I have kindle unlimited as well, so I will have to check those out! I know what you mean about kindle unlimited. There can be some gems but also some not so good writing as well.

I like your idea of asking students if they will want to revise before you grade and make comments. That makes a lot of sense to me.

Moving
My challenges are different for May.
1. Nature Journal each week (this is for my students to see how they are done, but they are fun and good for me, too so I will do one each week). I put this in moving because I am out and about walking and taking pics.
2. 10,000 steps a day - which I guess I already failed yesterday with only 9000. But I was still sort of thinking of my new goals.
3. Vitamin Everyday - New Move Every Day. This is from my online GMB program - it stresses body awareness and has you doing things like somersaults, crawling, handstands, cartwheels - I guess a lot of gymnastics moves.
4. continue push-ups and 1-legged squats daily.

I think its amazing that you are still managing to get 15k steps in! That is quite a feat, especially as school cranks up to the last 6 weeks. I think you are doing great.

Thanks Pinkie. I relaxed my standards yesterday, haha, and didn't get 15k. But I was OK with it - I was doing yard chores. I need the time outside because I am my computer 8-10 hours a day and it's just too much sitting!
Also, I'm not spending time cooking meals for the family (hardly, anyway). My boys have started cooking their own food out of desperation! Challenger has been making spaghetti and sometimes he'll make brats. Creator has figured out how to make mac & cheese, waffles, and hard-boiled eggs. My work station is the kitchen table, so I can act as "resource" as needed, lol. I will say I'm feeling so burned out on the computer that I'm not as eager to touch it (even for this forum) when I'm done for the day.

Tuesday I don't remember but probably similar to Wed, right? :-)

I think that’s awesome your boys are learning to cook! My girls can cook some basic stuff but I’d love to teach them some more complicated dishes.

I don’t blame you for being sick of the computer. I’m guessing that’s how a lot teachers are feeling right especially since teaching is usually a fairly active job.

How much longer is your school year?

That is so great that your boys are learning to cook! Shamefully, my girls don't know how to cook that much. I didn't learn how to cook until I was in my thirties, so no one ever taught me and I guess I don't know how to teach someone else. LIke at what age they can do what. I am inspired now, and this summer I will try to get my girls cooking more. It would be a great break for me too.

Glad you got outside a bit! I know how it feels to be stuck at the computer for 8 - 10 hours and it is not fun!

Linda and Pinkie - I am a sad role model as a cook. LOL, if they are going to learn it will have to be out of desperation. :-) Since I dislike doing it myself, it is not likely I ever have patience to teach them stuff. It's always a patient grandma that seems to lure kids into loving to cook. Ha!

Thanks for checking in on me - I know I'm not on the boards much right now and not having time to even read other posts. I look forward to summer (Linda - I have 6 weeks left as of today), when I can enjoy my computer time for fun reading and journaling.

Well, Pinkie, did I put on here that I have been having wine the last 2 nights? :-) I feel like I accomplished my goal, proved I can go without, and now I'm enjoying the fruit of the vine once again. Hopefully I can moderate more successfully this go around or I'll have to go back to abstinence.

Wow auto, was your wine the best tasting ever after not having it for a year? Do you still like it as much as you did?
This will sound funny but I don't like wine and I wish I did. It always looks like such a nice happy relaxing thing to do in shows and movies and in real life and it's supposed to have so many health benefits too. My dad and his wife break out wine every holiday and I drink it just to be festive but I don't really like it. I will drink a hard cider every now and then but alcohol is really hard on my body the older I get and I just don't feel good the next day.

Pinkie the wine was pretty good! :-)
Linda - I know, 6 long weeks drag in front of me. But THEN I am on sabbatical! And don't teach again until April 2021! So I can do this, I can do this, I can do this!

Saturday, May 9

B: coffee w/cream (multiple cups)
L: walnuts
D: salmon burger w/avocado & cheese
decaf coffee w/cream
2 cookies

about 14k steps, squats, pull-ups

Sunday, May 10

125.6 pounds (I'm either overdoing it on the creamy coffee, eating more sweets than I'm realizing, building muscle, or ... ? not sure about this weight gain but it's been insidious since quarantine started despite my on-paper pretty much the same eating and moving. Definite differences are: more cream and more coffee (not more caffeine - I have decaf after having 2 cups of regular in the morning); MORE exercise and MORE bodyweights - so I could be gaining muscle, retaining water, or maybe overexercising? I think I'm eating LESS protein than normal so anyone's guess. I've been trying just to observe and not freak but... well .... starting to freak. Upon reflection I am NEVER hungry - I'm having so much cream all day that I often don't even want dinner. So the obvious first step is to scale back on coffee and cream and eat real food instead of drinking cream all day.

B: coffee w/cream
L: yogurt w/berries, bacon
D: hamburger patty w/burger fixings
decaf coffee w/cream
then gave in and had 2 candy bars my family got me - why do they have to get me candy for Mother's Day? I really don't want to eat those things. Today I poured it all out in bowls, put in on the counter with a sign "help yourself". Kids have been eating it. Hoping Sexy gets the message that I don't want him to buy me junk food.

15K steps, also went on a 10 min run focusing on keeping heart rate at 137 bpm (something called the Maffetone method for endurance. I just wanted to see what it felt like)

April?! Oh wow that is exciting! Yes, you've got this! I hope you don't have to give up your cream. Did you look back at your food and see if anything stuck out? You do exercise a lot so maybe related. How are your clothes fitting? Anyway, you’re good at detective work so know you’ll figure it out.

That is so exciting about your sabbatical! I would say its almost perfect timing. It seems like fall of 2020 is going to be kind of a crazy time at universities as they figure out what to do and how to do it with Covid 19. Just get through this semester! You are almost there!

I have been wondering about my weight too. I have done WAY more weights and bodyweight exercise lately. My muscles are sore pretty much all the time and the scale has been either going up or staying still. I have read that your body can hold onto water to repair muscle... making your body weight heavier on the scale. Cream can be pretty caloric though as well... Sounds like a good plan to decrease the cream a bit and see what happens.

Monday, May 11

125.6

Eating
B: 1 electrolyte drink, 2 cups regular coffee w/cream, 1 cup decaf w/cream, 1 cup KetoOrgain w/cream (I'd like to keep this to 3 total servings of beverage w/cream.... so I'm documenting because I normally don't keep track)
L: yogurt w/berries
D: tuna salad w/cheese, guac, pickles
--goal this week is to avoid decaf coffee after dinner--
so, lol, 2 glasses of wine instead......
um, also finished off the last of the candy - probably equivalent of 1 candy bar

Some foods that could explain my weight gain: 1) too much cream; 2) too many tortilla chips sprinkled into meals, especially when I eat them with a cheese dip; 3) too many cookies, sweets, other junk food that's always around; 4) too much microwaveable popcorn. Can't think of anything else I'm overdoing or bringing in that's more indulgent than normal.

Yay Happy Birthday to Creator! My middle daughter is turning 11 also this Friday! I guess they are about the same age!

I love the idea of the Mario themed decorations! I did that one year for my oldest, and it was a lot of work but everyone enjoyed it. I bet it looks amazing.

I like how you are will choose the dinner choice based on whatever is better thawed. That makes me laugh because I do the same thing. Our fridge takes forever to thaw things.

Good luck getting everything done today and have a great day celebrating Creator! :)

Creator's birthday sounded wonderful! I love Mario. My kids and I had a lot of fun playing those games on the old Nintendo64 back in the day. ;)

How is it having wine in your life again? Do you notice any difference in how you feel physically? I don't sleep very well when I drink wine usually. I hope your teaching day went well.

Thanks everyone for the birthday wishes for Creator! There is one friend in his class that is coming over today! They are going to go bike-riding and shoot baskets.

Alene - no real difference with my sleep with the wine right now, but I do know that before I quit, drinking definitely messed with my sleep. To be perfectly honest, what I notice is that as soon as I pour that first glass, I want the oblivion that wine can bring. It's a total escapism I am seeking, and a year away from wine hasn't removed that problem. I'm not sure what healthy people drink for; I know that what I drink for is to get a buzz and to try to pretend I don't have the responsibilities of life. It's all about the dopamine-hit. So a year into this adventure I am still contemplating how to find bliss without alcohol. I guess regular life doesn't involve such bliss.

Moving
Focused on cleaning this morning (when I should have been doing schoolwork). So I probably won't get too many steps today but I'll still aim for over 10K and some squats.

Auto, I think most everyone drinks to change the way they're feeling. To relax, to escape, to forget about it all for awhile. I doubt it's just the taste for almost anyone! Healthy drinking. Hmm. It's probably a fine line for sure. I suppose some people just have the occasional drink or glass of wine while socializing, and could take it or leave it at other times. But my guess is that many of us have an unhealthy relationship with alcohol. My husband doesn't drink, so I don't drink regularly anymore. But I do enjoy it a lot when I socialize with family or go out. Probably too much. Going through my divorce I definitely drank too much wine to escape. So all that to say I don't know that we can create a healthy relationship with alcohol if our tendency is to overdo it. I hope you find the right answer for you. Happy Friday!

I agree with Alene, I think most people drink to change their feelings. I know I have said I am not much of a drinker but boy howdy! When I was going through my divorce, I definitely became a drinker. It really helped me cope with all the uncomfortable feelings. I don't think that is necessarily a bad thing, for me sometimes it's hard to access the feelings and alcohol helped me feel more and move through things. It could have turned into a bad thing, but maybe it didn't because after a few weeks of drinking during the weeknights, I usually only drank on the weekends. Kind of like eating sugary treats, it helped me to moderate things by assigning them to a certain block of the week.

Nowadays when I drink I really do it more to relax and yes get that buzz or to be a little less socially inhibited at social gatherings. It can be lots of fun to drink out in public with people. If I didn't feel so terrible the next day, I would probably drink more than I do.

Anyway, interesting thoughts about alcohol here.

I hope that pork loin finally thawed for you! ;)

Thank you Alene and Pinkie!

It's crazy that I still don't quite know why I want to escape so much. So many moms have similar obligations but don't seem to chafe against the expectations like I do. It's like I don't like the box I'm in. I resent the obligations in my life, and yet I live such a privileged life compared to 99% of the world. I feel trapped. I feel a little embarrassed that after a year without alcohol, I still haven't worked out what my problem is (or more importantly, how to fix it). I mean, seriously, if I had all my time my own, wouldn't I eventually want to interact with people? I can't be a pure hermit. In college I was loud and rambunctious - my nickname was "live-wire". Was I really social? Or was I acting the part? If I didn't have to do this job, what WOULD I do? Live on a farm and collect eggs and milk a dairy cow?

I think this difficult quarter is catching up with me. I need to just buckle down and get back to grading. Their writing is SO bad. They are in college, and their scientific writing is probably 7th or 8th grade level (on average - many write incoherently and I don't think it fits any grade.....). It makes me want to quit. Not that I know what else I'd do. I'm fortunate to have this job. But maybe I'd like to switch to agriculture for the next 20 years. Maybe I could get a job on a nearby dairy farm and drive a tractor. I could listen to podcasts while I shoveled manure. :-)

OK, so another day.

Eating
B: 2 cups regular coffee w/cream, 1 cup decaf w/cream
L: yogurt w/berries, walnuts
*interlude - Challenger had baked some french fries and most were gone, but then I started nibbling on them. This led to me literally opening the fridge with the intent of eating the last of Creator's birthday pizza. I was so close and then thought - you will regret this, this is not what you want. I sighed, had a glass of water, and put the pork loin in the oven. I often think my cravings just need me to respond by eating normal food. The pork loin will be ready by 4pm, haha. And then I fixed myself a cup of decaf coffee w/cream, which I had not wanted to do, but I think this is better than pizza and I am enjoying it. Grading. Grading. Grading. Dreaming of not doing this job anymore.
D: pork loin! :-)
then, after dinner and such a good food day so far, I ate FOUR chocolate chip cookies and had THREE glasses of wine. I have to say the wine was fun - hubby and I watched a silly movie and had a nice date night at home - but the cookies. Oh the cookies.

Moving
Probably not much. I'm so overwhelmed with work.... grading grading grading. never ends.

Chiming I’m here to with the alcohol think since you’ve know I’ve also struggled to find a good balance in the past as well. Sometimes I can just pour a glass of wine and only finish half of it but other times I can’t seem to get enough. I actually had told myself that during quarantine I wasn’t going to worry about limiting myself. It’s worked out okayish but then yesterday I couldn’t remember the last time I went a day without drinking and it’s a little alarming. I think it might be messing with my sleep and weight too mostly because my inhibitions go down and I care a lot less about losing weight in the moment which leads to snacking or too much sugar. Also scares me because I think some ppl become alcoholics or drug addicts in a way that sort of sneaks up on them. I definitely don’t want that to happen to me so keeping an eye on it and going to make sure I have a few days with no drinking.

Not much help here but it’s normal to want the feelings alcohol brings. You just have to make sure alcohol isn’t interfering with your life in a negative way I guess. This is embarrassing but It watch the NY housewives (;my guilty pleasure) and two women on there are struggling with this very issue of how to bring drinking back in their lives without it being problematic. It’s actually really interesting.

Anyway, I think it’s great you are reflecting on who you really are and what you really want. Btw, I could happily be a hermit. Maybe we can have neighboring chicken farms and we can occasionally wave to each other. 😄

Auto, I feel your pain on the grading! I'm sure it is very discouraging to wade through the bad writing. I think so many of us are feeling bogged down around work. Besides the grading, do you generally enjoy your job - in the classroom? If so, know that this will pass at some point and you can teach as you have in the past. If this goes on for some time maybe you can change how you set up your assignments so there is less grading involved. Hang in there!!

Yay the pork loin was finally thawed! :)

I am sorry you are feeling so down about your job. I can tell by the way you write that you are really passionate about your subject and teaching it. Speaking from an older student standpoint, I have noticed in my more traditional classes ie ( English, Science, etc..) that it seems that my teachers are way less strict and offer way more hand-holding than they did when I was in my 20's in school because the students seem to need it. And working as a tutor I notice that so many students don't seem to be able to communicate via email, or in their writing. I figured it just meant I was getting old, but I can imagine that writing levels have gone down with the world these kids grow up in with text speak and less stringent writing standards in school. I notice my girls have to do less writing than I did in elementary school even.

Anyway, your sabbatical is coming up right?! Maybe that will help you get a fresh perspective or give you the break that you really need.
