automated eating tracker

Counting carbs/calories is a drag. Obsessive scale stepping is a recipe for despair. If you want to count something, "days on habit" is a much better metric. Checking off days on a calendar would do just fine, but if you do it here you get accountability and support. Here's how. Start a new topic in this forum called (say) "Your Name Daily Check In." Then every N day post a "reply" to that topic as to whether you stayed on habit. A simple "<font color="green">SUCCESS</font>" or "<font color="red">FAILURE</font>" (or your preferred euphemism if that's too harsh) is sufficient, but obviously you're welcome to write more if you want. On S-days just register that you're taking an S-day. You don't have to do this forever, just until you're confident you've built the habit. Feel free to check in weekly or monthly or sporadically instead of daily. Feel free also to track other habits besides No-s (I'm keeping this forum under No-s because that's what the vast majority are using it for). See also my <a href="/habitcal/">HabitCal</a> tool for another more formal (and perhaps complementary) way to track habits.

You all are so kind and understanding and supportive. I love my NoS buddies. :-)

Linda, I think my drinking did sort of sneak up on me over the decade after I had kids. But now it's all out there, and I know that I have this tendency. I keep thinking I need to try pot instead. :-)

Alene, you are right that I can design my classes for less grading. You are right. I need to do that. But, on the bright side here, I think the work I'm assigning to the students is extremely useful for them. Every minute of it I think is valuable for them; and every minute of my grading is good feedback for them. It's just maybe a bit much this quarter.

And Pinkie - yes, sabbatical coming! Which brings me to my next anxiety, which is am I going to spend my sabbatical worrying about the sabbatical work rather than rejuvenating? omg I am such a goofball.

OK, now my pondering for today is this: I actually am caught up on grading today and have the day in front of me. I'm so used to not having time to take a break that I'm not sure what to do, and I don't really feel like doing anything. Even my long walks don't sound attractive. Cleaning rarely excites me (lol), I don't want to start a puzzle..... I just keep thinking about schoolwork that does need to be done (not urgently, though).... I hate "wasting" a free day but feel no energy to take advantage of it either.

And I'm sort of pissed about my eating. I've had some strange/big fails off and on during quarantine. Probably no surprise and I know most of have been struggling in different ways during all this stay-home stuff. But it does piss me off.

Saturday went like this:

B: coffee w/cream (2 cups), decaf (1 cup), collagen proteins (1 cup)
L: yogurt w/berries, walnuts
D: pork loin
great day, right? But then - Sexy brought home Mexican take out and I ate basically a second dinner.

Moving was OK, I did go on one long walk.

Now, today, Sunday, May 17

125.4 pounds

Eating
B: coffee w/cream (2 cups), decaf w/cream (1 cup), collagen proteins (1 cup)
L: my new homemade high-fat 24 hour fermented grass-fed A2 yogurt! :-) I'm going to taste-test it with my two other brands. I used to make yogurt somewhat regularly (one of the few things I like to make, lol), but it's been a long time. Truthfully, I have access to very good local yogurts so it's not something I really need to make. But anyway, should be fun to taste-test today.
D: pork loin
And I will remind myself that tomorrow morning I will not regret foregoing whatever crap-in-a-bag my family indulges in tonight.
1 cup decaf w/cream
1 cup collagen proteins

Moving
Better get out there, but feel no excitement for it.
Ended up taking 2 nice walks, one with each dog.

Yeah I can see how that would be a worry with a sabbatical. I bet you will figure it out when the time comes though.

So you eat a different dinner than your family most nights? I think that would be tough to do, I can definitely understand succumbing to take out! I hope you felt happier about your dinner choice this evening though.

I know when school is in session I have a hard time gearing down and enjoying ANY free time as it feels wrong to not be doing schoolwork. I hope you figured out something fun to do and/or relaxed and took time for yourself!

Pots a great idea since it’s much less addictive. It makes me paranoid though. I think it’s great you’ve so open about your struggles with drinking and it’s allowed me to do the same so thanks for that. 💕

Pot makes my husband paranoid too! Like really paranoid. Actually I have never seen it, only heard the stories from him and mutual friends since he did all that before he met me.

Ha! Lots of comments about the cannabis. :-) Here in Washington it's on every corner, but I feel like it still carries a stigma.

Monday, May 18

125 pounds

Eating
B: 2 regular cups of coffee w/cream, 1 decaf cup w/cream, 1 cup collagen proteins
L: homemade yogurt w/berries :-)
D: pork loin and salmon leftovers
decaf cup w/cream, 1 cup collagen proteins

Moving
Felt like I relaxed movement wise today, but between a leisurely walk with HappyHerder, and some time in the yard, I reached over 16k steps today.

Auto, how did your homemade yogurt come out? Is it worth the time to make it, or are some of your other local yogurts just as good? How's work going this week?

My homemade yogurt is delicious. I enjoy making it (which is rare for me to enjoy anything in the kitchen). So for fun it's worth it but I am totally lucky to have great local NW yogurts at the store. I'm actually making another batch today - incubating for 24 hours.

I guess I didn't post yesterday:

Tuesday, May 19

Eating
B: 2 cups regular w/cream, 1 cup decaf w/cream, 1 cup collagen proteins
L: homemade yogurt w/berries, walnuts
D: leftover salmon filet
1 cup decaf w/cream, 1 cup collagen proteins

What stands out about yesterday was how much I wanted to eat processed foods. I had to fight it. And using willpower like that is not normal for me - I don't like having to use such overt force to avoid overeating. Definitely not sustainable.

Wednesday, May 20

Eating
B: coffee w/cream (2), decaf w/cream (1), collagen proteins
L: homemade yogurt w/berries, 1 more cup regular w/cream
D: leftover salmon again.....
decaf w/cream

I feel tired, a little defeated. But I only have 4 weeks left. I can do this.

Thinking about taking Flowerpup hiking but also I just want to sleep - I think it's an avoidance technique from doing schoolwork.

Sorry you are having difficulty auto. Do you think your craving for processed foods is due to stress? I agree that using that much willpower is not sustainable. It's why Im rethinking my eating patterns. Just try to be nice to yourself because if you get mad at yourself for processed food cravings or eating processed food, it will probably just cause more stress.

What you are doing is really hard right now. I hope you are able to at least have little breaks for yourself where you can relax a bit.

And yes only 4 weeks left! You CAN do this!

Linda - you are going to make cheese?! That is so cool! I think I might have to give that a try at some point. Of course, my favorite is aged cheeses like cheddar, which take months and months, haha.

Pinkie - I don't think the cravings are necessarily stress, but yes, in a way. I think (as always), I'm looking for the pleasure hit those foods give me. I'm not experiencing a lot of pleasure in my day-to-day, so the idea of some Doritos is exciting. Haha.

Friday, May 22 - today is our 21st wedding anniversary....we haven't been fighting, but we definitely aren't interacting in lots of positive ways in the past 2 months. Sexy is in the same situation I am, but maybe even tougher in some ways. I already had a youtube channel and am very comfortable online with my students; he teaches math and had to record himself teaching Calculus 3..... So he has staked out his desk in our bedroom; I'm stuck at the kitchen table. He goes running by himself; I go walking by myself. Honestly, the idea of going out of the house with him when I could be myself is not attractive. I'm sure he feels the same way. He does all the grocery shopping, most of the cooking, and helps Challenger with his Algebra.

Oh that is right, I forgot that your husband is a teacher too! That must be stressful. I can't imagine trying to teach calculus 3 via youtube.(I say as someone who never took Calculus... :D ) I suppose the nice thing is that you will both be done at the same time.. He isn't doing summer school is he?

I know what you mean about looking for the pleasure in food. I have been reading masses of Intuitive eating type books lately and that is one thing they talk a lot about. If you don't have a lot of joy in your life, or fun, it's easy to use food as your fun. Especially during stressful times! At least you have the structure of No S to help you, so that's good.

Can I ask you a question about your yogurt? Whenever you get to it is fine, I know you are busy. Is it like Greek yogurt with all the protein or more like your standard full fat yogurt?

It's regular protein yogurt (10g/protein/serving). I don't strain it because then I'll lose potassium and calcium from the drained whey. Well, and honestly, that's more work, too. I use 1/2 gallon whole milk (the kind I buy is 6% milkfat) and then add a pint of cream.

I do love Siggi's 4% milkfat yogurt though - 25 grams of protein/serving. Wow.

Thanks auto, that is interesting. Does that mean commercial greek yogurt is also lacking potassium and calcium then? I never considered that before. Your homemade yogurt sounds amazing though! I love full fat yogurt and its so hard to find plain here.

I'm glad you enjoyed your day out in the garden so much. It really is therapeutic, isn't it? Especially now with being indoors so much and sitting more. I hope you found a nice bench. I'm going to create a "secret garden," at our new house. There's a spot up between two maple trees where I'm going to put it. I need to do some research on plants that will work, a bench, and probably a little pathway.

Thanks Linda, pinkie, and alene! :-) I have been buying fence art! I have geckos and butterflies and turtles now. :-) Then I dragged a huge stump to the trailhead near me and brought it home. I was so pleased with myself that I hauled two more logs into my backyard from the woods. Sexy laughs at me - claiming most people try to get stumps and logs OUT of their yard. :-)  No bench yet, but I found one I like.

hoping for a long walk in the sun - yep, got it done. :-)

Sort of deep in the depression of my periodic existential crisis of teaching. There are some aspects of it that I don't feel safe expressing, even on this fairly anonymous forum, but I want y'all to know that I wish I could share more, because I generally trust this group so much. The other thing is that I know this will pass - it comes in waves. I hate letting my fear of repercussions at my job keep from enjoying my job. But I do tend to think that with the passing of years it is harder and harder for an average person like me to be safe in teaching. I think that it will continue to require zen-like social skills and ... well... an ability to politic to keep safe. I just really don't have those skills (and believe me, I try - but that inner "live-wire" temperament of me rises up and messes things up with her bluntness). I feel it's just a matter of time until it's my turn to be publicly shamed for not handling a student issue with the level of skill and savvy that Sexy could (and many of my other colleagues).

I was thinking I might like to be a vet tech for a large animal vet..... :-)
Trust me, I keep having ideas that might sound a little crazy.
If Sexy keeps his job, then I could quit and begin exploring other side gigs. LOL.
Anyway, I'm on sabbatical in THREE FREAKING WEEKS. How can I not just keep my head down and survive for three more weeks?! Do I sometimes whip up unnecessary internal turmoil for some weird dysfunctional reason? Maybe my psyche prefers torment to boredom. LOL, OMG, that could be true.

auto sorry that you are having trouble. I wish you could express more too, but this is an open forum so one does have to be careful. I know what you mean about the politic of teaching and having to be careful. I feel bad for my professors when I am in school. I have one that became good friends with my husband when he was in school( my degree plan is similar to what my husband took) and he would often tell him about "microaggression" complaints that he would get and other students complaining about what he said and such. Which blew my mind because he is an amazing professor. I notice my male professors are INSANELY careful around me and I assume its because I am a woman. They are much more guarded with me than with the males in the class. Which is a bummer since I am usually the only female in the class. I know they are only protecting their jobs, but it makes me sad.

Anyway, since I don't know your situation I could just be blathering about something that has nothing to do with your situation, but I am sorry that you have to deal with it. Vet tech is one of the jobs I contemplated too! But, then I read about the high rate of injuries they get and decided against that idea. Maybe a dog trainer? :)

Sorry you’re struggling too. I have these crisis every 6 mos or so. Usually it’s about getting some kind of job but I never do then it leads to fears of being homeless and alone. Sigh. It always passes though and eventually I find something interesting to throw myself into till the next crisis.

Anyway, omg you’d be a great dog trainer and can I be your first client?! 😊

Auto, I wish you could share more too. It really does help to share it with the group. Keep letting all those ideas percolate. Maybe one of them will just click and you'll be off on a new life adventure! Or, things in education will settle back down and you will find your groove again and feel good about it. I think you may be being too hard on yourself about not handling the social skills you need. I thought you did a wonderful job handling the situation that came up in your class last month. These kinds of decisions usually take time to shake out. 3 more weeks!! :)

As for causing our own inner turmoil, I think most all of us could raise our hands and say, "me too?" I think it's part of the human condition.

Auto, I’m sorry you’re struggling. At least, with only 3 weeks to go, you can hang in there and then you’ll be free. Would it be feasible for you to quit? If so, it sounds like you would be a great vet tech!

Thanks everybody for the support. So appreciated!

Pinkie - yep, you've pretty much nailed the type of environment stress I am speaking of.

Linda - Maybe these crises just come with the territory of having only one life to live? We just can't do it all!

Alene - Thank you for your kind words - I had already forgotten about that situation. That student is still one I am particularly careful with but I do actually think I've won her over (and if I remember right, I didn't think that would ever happen).

Clarinetgal - If I quit, we could do it if we lived far more frugally (I think, anyway, maybe I'm being overly optimistic). Anyway, I think right now letting myself fantasize about escaping this situation is helping me survive, in some weird convoluted way.

I have to say, I think the sunny weather this week is improving my coping ability. Yesterday I quit working earlier in the day than normal, and went on a long and extremely leisurely walk with Flowerpup. We just took our time, and stopped and sniffed everything. :-) She swam a lot, too! It was very relaxing for me, and had me looking forward to the long leisure hours of summer.

At this point, I'm thinking I will spend my sabbatical really improving my science artwork and adding to my website and youtube channel. I will also spend a great deal of time puttering around my house and yard, and playing with my dogs. And that's it. I have a few particular things that I have promised I will do/produce during my sabbatical but I think I can wrap in my artwork/website work to accomplish those assignments. COVID-19 has sort of given me an "out" to attending two conferences, which sounded good in my proposal but honestly, I don't enjoy travel that much compared with my colleagues and friends. I'll just stay home and watch the livestream!

After my sabbatical is over, I'm required to teach for at least one year (since they are giving me partial salary during my sabbatical). So that means I could decide to quit in 2 years, if I'm still feeling like this. That sort of forces me to avoid making any hasty decisions. I suppose I could also apply for a leave without pay for a year and give myself even MORE time to think it over before giving up my stable, well-paying, and flexible job.

Friday, May 29

125.6 lbs
I have gained about 5 pounds this spring. I'm not sure why - my eating and my exercise have been fairly consistent. I have added electrolytes daily (I don't log those) - about 2g of Na+ daily (with some K+ and Mg++ as well). I wonder if it could be mostly that. I feel physically good, and strong, so I'm trying not to overthink this. I also know that I lost a bunch of weight at the end of January (dog anxiety = no appetite), and I wonder if my body is just trying to store more fat right now as a rebound sort of thing. If that's the case, I need to just keep providing my body with lots of nutrient-dense foods and resting/destressing. Ha! Destressing! :-) 3 weeks!

Eating
B: coffee w/cream, decaf w/cream, collagen proteins
L: skipped - took a nap after school was finished :-)
D: tortilla chips w/artichoke dip, an ice cream cone, and a sugar cookie.

Not been on here for a while, sorry you have had a tough time. Sabbatical sounds great.

I do think rebound weight gain is a real thing but I'm sure you've got it now.

Take care

Saturday, May 30

126.4 pounds

Eating
B: coffee w/cream (2), decaf w/cream (1), collagen proteins (1)
L: my newest batch of homemade yogurt w/berries
D: chicken in bone broth w/cheese and avocado
after dinner, I had a nice cup of collagen proteins
but then.... had a bowl of tortilla chips & dip. Ruined my good blood glucose day with those corn chips. :-(

I have 4 hours left of paper-grading today. But of course that takes me all day (I graded one and then came on here, for example). The truth is even being efficient requires mental breaks with this type of work. So I think it will take me the whole day to finish. But then I can take all of tomorrow off from work.

I lose weight when I’m stressed too and it does usually end up coming back at least partially. I know you’re a shorty like me but I’m wondering if 125ish is actually a good weight for you. It would be a dream weight for me for sure. Besides the number on the scale, how do you feel? Comfortable? Healthy & fit? Are you in a clothes size that you feel good about? Anyway, you get to decide your weight goals but just make sure it’s not just about achieving a certain number on the scale without taking into account the rest. Been there, done that. 😊

I have to take breaks too from work. I can only sit and focus so long. Sounds like a good idea to get 'er done today and have tomorrow completely free to enjoy!

Oh what a bummer that you have to deal with those sorts of things auto.

Im glad you are taking breaks today. It was a hard lesson for me to learn that taking breaks allows for more efficiency but its so true.

Enjoy your day off of schoolwork tomorrow!

You know, Linda, I'm not sure how I feel about my body. I think I feel bad. I've been mildly depressed from work, so it's probably affecting everything about my perception. What's a little scary is seeing the scale go up day after day even though my habits have not changed. My blood sugar has gone up a little too - both fasting and postprandials. My doc had said they might consider metformin for me if my diet and exercise wasn't enough to keep my blood sugars normal. So it might be time to consider a medication for my prediabetes.
My resting heart rate was 77(!!!!) for 2 days this week. Thankfully down to 73 today, which is still probably higher than virtually everyone I know, but better than 77.
I guess I'm discouraged about my body right now. That's why I thought your picture thing + keeping better track of my measurements might be a good idea, since when I look in the mirror I feel like I look flabby.

So I didn't QUITE finish my grading yesterday, but it only took a quick 30 minutes to wrap up this morning and I feel really good about spending the day getting some household chores done + reading. I'm reading a book called "The Imperative Habit". So far it's good. Oh, and recently I finished "The Courage To Be Disliked" and I really enjoyed that! It was fun style - a conversation between a young man and an older man.

I'm also re-reading Dr. Bernstein's Diabetes Solution. He is ultra-strict, but he does motivate me to keep my blood sugars in careful check.

This sort of blip in my life does make me reflect on just how much depression/discouragement/stress can affect blood sugar regluation and the cardiovascular system.

Eating
B: coffee w/6 TBSPs cream (2 regular + 1 decaf), walnuts
L: yogurt w/berries
D: carne asada, cheese, avocado
wine
dessert: sugar-free jello w/cream

Moving
After I wrapped up my school stuff I took Flowerpup on a nice walk. It was wet out there but not pouring. Yesterday it RAINED and THUNDERED. :-)

I’m sorry you’re feeling bad about your body right now. I’m sure your sabbatical will really help with reducing your stress, and hopefully with some of the other issues. The books you’re reading sound interesting!

Thanks CG! I am going to be OK. Just a rough patch, right? :-)

Monday, June 1!

Resting HR: 71 (this is huge improvement over the 77 I had 2 days last week.....)
FBG: 96mg/dL

The sun is out, I feel better this morning although time to hit the grading hard again and not really looking forward to that. Yesterday was a nice respite from the workload. In these books on happiness that I read, they always encourage us to just do what we love. Well, what happens when we agreed to do something (that we now regret - in this case, the excessive assignments I have to grade, lol) that we don't want to keep doing, but we made a commitment? Urgh. That's real life. I can't just tell my students they are done, can I? Haha, maybe they'd be happy to end their quarter early.

Auto, I am not the biology expert but I thought that I read that stress raises cortisol and can increase all the things you are noticing, blood sugar, weight, etc...

Maybe you are just really stressed out right now and its affecting your body regardless of your food and exercise?

Also how much power over the curriculum do you have as a teacher? I know one of my teachers changed our last 2 assignments to make them MUCH easier. Much less requirements than usual and much less resource intensive. He said that since we were in the middle of a pandemic and that people were struggling right now he just wanted to help us finish. In retrospect I guess it would have made our assignments easier to grade for him as well.

Could you do something like that or are you bound by requirements and things like that? I know you are teaching future nurses, and health professionals right? So maybe not.

Anyway, I hope you have a good day, and I am sorry that you are struggling right now.

Glad you took a day off and are feeling better. I really admire that you are so disciplined and work so hard to improve your health. It doesn’t seem fair that you should have to go on meds with all that you do but I hope you can be proud of yourself regardless. 💜

Thanks pinkie for the ideas! I have reduced some things for the biology majors, but you are right, the pre-health students really need to have a strong foundation. I feel I would be unfair to them to reduce much. That said, I am trying to make things as simple for all of us as we approach the end of the quarter.

And yes, theoretically I totally know that emotional stress can do awful things to our bodies. It's just fascinating to think that it is happening to MY body. I still don't feel like I have the right to feel stressed. I have a job, I get to work from home, I get to have the summer off and a sabbatical after that. Anyway, I think that I have a lot of "shoulds" about myself in my head. Tough to live with that little task-master in my head. :-)

Linda, I think a new step in my journey might be to develop acceptance for my health just as it is. It's a challenge for me to not judge myself for not having perfect blood glucose!! (or compare with others, LOL, have you ever met anyone that says they are jealous of other people's blood glucose measurements, bwahahaha) Holy cow sometimes I see a flash of the extent of my perfectionism and it ain't pretty.

Yeah that is tough when they have to know certain things to advance and do a good job later.

You are like your own science experiment right now! You are doing everything the same but your numbers have changed. Maybe if you look at yourself like a curious scientist observing, rather than judging it will help make it easier for you.

I know anytime we say we "should" we are probably not being kind to ourselves. Should is a loaded word that makes us feel guilty and like a failure. I am a perfectionist as well so I KNOW how hard it is, but working on being kinder to yourself can really help I think.

Thanks for the encouragement, everyone.

I have no idea what I weigh today. I feel like I've gained 10 pounds in a week. I'm going to have to edit my signature soon since I've gained so much weight. Sigh. I've been watching the "Great Courses" on the Black Death (yes, it fits my "cheery" mood of late), and it's interesting to think that those people would have never spent a SINGLE SECOND of their entire lives feeling like they needed to lose weight. Ha! And I think it's fair to say I wouldn't want to trade places with them!

I should document a phenomenon that occurs when my eating "goes off the rails" (which it has done this past week): I don't WANT to eat anything normal. I only want to eat Doritos, lava cakes, and popcorn. It's interesting. And then eventually I get back to normal, but I'm trying to figure out what "shifts" so that I can go back to eating normal meals. If I can figure out what the shift is, maybe I can find it earlier and get out of the poor eating rut.

Also, these poor eating cycles tend to go right along with no energy. I feel tired when I get up, I feel too tired to exercise or clean, I don't sleep well, I can't focus on reading. You know what, it sounds like depression, doesn't it? Hopefully it will pass soon. Yesterday I felt a sliver of hope that the end of the quarter is almost here. I made up some color-coded lists and enjoyed prioritizing what I want to accomplish each day: morning mobility, walk/jogs, domestic work, creative work, bodyweights. This morning I did the mobility routine and then couldn't find the motivation to do anything else.

I also have now heard that my sabbatical is potentially on the chopping block due to budget constraints. I'm thinking things will be just fine, but I can't deny it's in the back of my mind that I might not get this sabbatical I've been hanging on for. I'll know at the end of the month.

The other thing from this week is that HappyHerder got super sick again. The vet is now presuming he has Crohn's disease, an autoimmune inflammatory bowel disease that causes him intense pain. He's on a combo pain pill regime of gabapentin and codeine. He's also on several other meds. He's a walking pharmacy. I haven't really slept all week because he is up and down during the night, and it took a couple days for us to get the pain management straightened out. But I'm hoping he's coming through this OK, and will be back to normal soon. Flowerpup just seems confused that her buddy doesn't want to play. I've been trying to walk her like normal, but I just don't have it in me to do much.

As usual, Creator's right there with me through all of this. He's been sleeping downstairs with HappyHerder and me - a bright spot in our difficult days. We make popcorn and read Greek myths before bed.

“ We make popcorn and read Greek myths before bed.” Love this so much. Just a very touching image of you making the best of things through all the chaos.

Tough time for sure but I know you’ll come out of this okay like you always seem to manage to do. Do you ever give yourself a day off like completely?

That is a lot to deal with auto! I know how much health issues can affect stress too. I hope HappyHerder starts improving and gets back to normal soon. I know he is in a lot of pain right now, but thank goodness he has such wonderful pet parents to take care of him and get him everything he needs in you and Creator. I'm glad you guys are able to work together with this too.

I do the same thing with the eating, but usually, mine is in response to perceived restriction and deprivation. If I have been forcing myself to eat "healthy" beyond my comfort zone is when that happens to me. Like when I tried to do Dr. Furhmans eat to live... :D

It does sound like you are depressed. I am sorry. I think the best thing you can do for yourself is to try to take care of yourself, but I know how hard that is to do right now. Just remember that you are important and also a priority. I am crossing my fingers for you that your sabbatical comes through!

Sleeping downstairs messes up my morning routine, so I haven't weighed. This morning I did just to be honest with myself about how things are going: 127.6 pounds

It looks like you are eating a little more how you normally eat lately, are you feeling any better?

I'm so sorry to hear the news about your sabbatical. :( That is such a bummer! Have you thought about what you want to do if it turns out to be deferred?

Auto, I'm so sorry to hear about your sabbatical likely being deferred. I hope if that's the case that you will find a rhythm with the new guidelines for next year and feel good about what you're doing. I know you will figure out your next step and move in a positive direction for yourself.

Thanks Pinkie. Yes, better food makes me feel better, but when I feel bad, it takes willpower to eat good food. :-) Hence, the vicious cycle of getting depressed and craving junk food which makes me more depressed, haha.

Thanks for the vote of confidence, Alene! :-)

If my sabbatical is deferred, I will just have to keep going. Sexy has given me advice to make some lists (he says I am good at lists, lol) and figure out what about my job is most upsetting/discouraging, and what parts I like. Then he suggests I design my classes to maximize the good, even if it might mean my bosses aren't thrilled. And then just see how that goes. We definitely have discussed me eventually trying to get an 80% contract, which would still have benefits but I wouldn't teach as many classes. We have also discussed me quitting altogether, although we both know right now is not a good time to make any decisions like that.

What's fascinating is that when my boys were babies and toddlers, I loved my job and NEVER considered quitting. This fascinates me because I was chronically sleep-deprived and never had enough time to get my work done. I always wanted to work more! more! more! Although, I actually didn't work more than 40 hours a week (because you can't make lecture notes or grade when a toddler is in the room, eh?). So I was forced to limit my work hours and, perhaps, that "limiting" made me want it more. I also never worked from home in those early years. I wonder if the very clear separation of teaching and home life was actually protective to me.

I have been teaching for 20 years now. I have taught literally every grade. For the past 14 years, I have taught community college. It is entirely possible I'm just ready to move on. I like trying new things, I'm a curious gal :-) and I may internally feel I'm ready for a new challenge.

Upon further reflection, the shift began about 6 years ago. I chose to be division chair, I remember now, so that I would not be teaching as much (only 1 class/quarter instead of 3). So I must have already been feeling dissatisfied. But then, as it turned out, being division chair was HORRIBLE. I felt like it sucked my soul and every day I was tempted (or did) compromise my integrity. I was then glad to return to full-time teaching after 3.5 long years of that administration work (btw I also think the stress of being chair was why I started drinking more). I was constantly working from home - it never stopped.
It's been precisely 2 years since I finished being chair. I remember feeling that it took an entire year for me to get the resentment/disgust/frustrations of admin out of my system.

I know what you mean about the vicious cycle! I get caught up in that too more than I would like. Especially with exercise. Feel lethargic so don't exercise so feel more lethargic so don't exercise...

I think Sexy has a good idea with the lists! Configuring your classes so you can maximize your enjoyment sounds like that would work really well. At least you have the summer to figure things out right? Your semester is almost over, isn't it?

I can understand feeling like you are ready for a new challenge after 14 years! That is a long time to be doing a job. At least you have eliminated being division chair from the list of possibilities already! :)

I hope the end of this semester is going quickly and smoothly for you.

That is so great that you are feeling less stressed. Its so interesting how your stats seem to reflect that. It's amazing how much stress affects us physically.

The Weight of Ink looks like an interesting book. I see its on kindle unlimited... I may have to check it out.

Weight of Ink has captured my heart, Pinkie. I'm 80% done.

And oh my gosh, how my stats reflect my stress. My resting HR is down to 66 today. 2 weeks ago it was 77!!!! My fasting glucose is lower, too. Sleep is still not back to normal; I seem to be sleeping well, but just not long enough. Waking up too early.

Soprano, yes weight seems to have settled. I feel like I'm back on track taking care of myself a little better. I'll be just fine if I don't get this sabbatical, but I'm still keeping my fingers crossed! :-)

Moving
Went with Sexy to a nearby (small) mountain and I RAN up half of it! He ran the whole thing; Flowerpup and I were still very proud of ourselves. :-)

A couple of food ideas for summer. One is continuing my early dinners. It allows my blood sugar to be very stable by the time I go to bed.

Second is cooking homemade. Not that I make anything complicated. But I have been making my own yogurt for the past few weeks.
I've decided I'd like to make my own sourdough bread and do some glucose experiments on it. Most of what I've read is that sourdough blunts the blood sugar spike. And supposedly sprouted grain sourdough bread would be the very best blood-sugar wise. The problem is that I have never made bread. :-) Or is that no problem, lol? I'll just experiment! It's been hard to find a recipe that is sprouted grain sourdough. Most recipes use fun flour because I'm sure it makes the end product fluffier and yummier. But that's not what I'm going for. Apparently I need to get a digital scale because only goobers don't weigh their flour (haha).

For dinners, I feel like I've hit on this perfect dinner for me (if only the rest of the fam would eat it). You've all seen it many times on my thread, but it is so easy. Bone broth + whatever protein is on hand + cheese + avocado + sometimes a vegetable
What I love about this meal is that it's like a stir-fry in that you can use whatever you have on hand, and it goes together in minutes. I can bake a batch of meat at the beginning of the week and then use a little each night. Or just use a can of tuna

The dinner idea sounds great! I am always looking for healthy quick meals that I can eat that the rest of the family doesn't. Essentially cooking two meals. Can you tell me your Avacado secrets though? I have given up buying them because they always get brown in the fridge no matter how much lemon juice or saran wrap I use.

Auto, so glad that you are settling back into a good eating routine, and it sounds like your body is very happy about that too. Tell me about your dinners. Do you eat all those items separately on a plate or mix them, or what? Inquiring minds. :)

Pinkie - my "avocado" secret is that I buy those individual smashed avocado servings at Costco. :-) We do also buy avocados when they are in good condition, though. I never put them in the fridge, though. When we buy them, we leave them on the counter and eat them as soon as they are ripe. It's like - put all other plans on hold - eat the avocados! :-)

Alene - it's in a bowl! I thought it's a stew, but Sexy tells me it's more like a soup (because it's thin).
First, I warm the bone broth (either chicken or beef - I buy from Kettle & Fire) on the stove top and add pre-cooked meat (I bake/cook/fry up a bunch when I buy it and then just keep it in the fridge) until everything is warmed through. Then, I make a bowl of it, add cheddar cheese, and zap it for 45 more seconds in the microwave. Then, I add the avocado. The vegetables I sometimes add (I steamed some brussel sprouts and then added last night and that was really good!), but with broccoli I tend to like to have it on the side. It's a simple meal but the combinations are endless. I think this works for me because I am one of the "simplest" eaters I've ever known. I don't mind leftovers, I don't mind eating the same thing everyday. I crave simple far more than I crave variety. I know this is a little unusual. :-)

I'm going to go see if I can buy some sprouted wheat and sourdough starter at the food co-op this afternoon. We'll see. I'll probably need to buy them online. But this summer I plan to try making sourdough bread and including it in my diet and seeing how my blood sugar responds. I've had pretty OK responses with Dave's Killer Bread recently so I'm optimistic.

This morning I finished entering grades for 3 of my 5 classes. Tomorrow I'll do the other two and hopefully be all finished by Wednesday!!!!!!!!
I still don't know about my sabbatical, but I am at peace either way.

We are fans of Dave’s killer bread as well. I’ve been wanting to make sourdough bread for awhile but everyone keeps saying how much work it is to keep a starter. I have been making no knead bread though and loving it. The longer you keep it in the frig (up to 7 days) the more sour it gets. So I guess that’s kinda my work around.

Alene - it WAS a great walk! I am feeling so free! I'm enjoying and expressing gratitude for every moment of this euphoria. :-)

Wednesday, June 17

Flowerpup is 7 months old! I can't believe it! She is about 40 pounds; she looks like a miniature flat-coated retriever. She's really quite striking - we get lots of compliments on her long shiny black coat and her unique look. HappyHerder is much more settled having a companion; he takes care of her and is always licking her face and keeping an eye on her. He is very maternal, my HappyHerder. :-) Anyway, they are definitely best doggie-friends, at this point. And I finally have a dog I can take anywhere in the car and she's happy to go! :-)

Eating
B: coffee w/cream
L: yogurt w/berries
D: tri-tip steak + cheesy broccoli
some strawberries from my garden
2 glasses of wine

Moving
I didn't go on any walks, but did a lot of yard work (with the dogs, of course, haha)

At the moment I have:
*sourdough starter "starting" - Day 1 - 1 cup whole wheat flour + 1/2 cup water in a mason jar on top of the fridge. Wish me luck! Sounds like 1-2 weeks until it is ready. I did order some liver starter online, too. It might be fun to compare results and make a loaf with each type of starter.
*cabbage fermenting! Also in a mason jar. I've never even cut up a cabbage but I happily chopped while listening to one of my podcasts.
*an entire gallon of freshly made yogurt

Do you see a theme here? Hail the mighty, miraculous, and transformative Lactobacillus!

You know what will be next, right? I'm going to HAVE to start finally making my own dang bone broth.......

Aww man! We don't have a Costco here. I live in Walmart country and we don't get to have a Costco. I was buying those little serving sizes of guacamole but I wanted something less processed so I stopped buying them.

That is so great that Flowerpup and HappyHerder get along so well. And so nice to have a dog you can take in the car! My basset always cries and trembles in the car but my Shih Tzu loves car rides and will hop in the car anytime she has a chance. We would take him hiking with us a lot more if he was easier to ride with in a vehicle.

Good luck with your sourdough starter and your cabbage!

Pinkie - until we had HappyHerder, I really didn't know there were dogs that didn't like the car! But I realize now that there are a lot of dogs that would rather have multiple vet procedures done than go in a car. This is actually true in HH's case; he is still ALWAYS friendly and kind to all the vets that have poked and prodded his strange health situations over the years. But the car? He rolls on his back on the ground as soon as he sees it and starts shaking.

Thursday, June 18

123.2 lbs
waist:height rato (waist measured directly at navel for consistency, even though it's definitely not my "natural waist"): 29.5inches:62inches = .48 , which is the number at the top end of healthy for females. If I measure slightly higher, at my natural waist, my ratio is 28:62, which gives me .45 for my ratio.
.42 to .48 is the ratio for females with a healthy amount of fat.

I encourage all of us to do this measurement. Apparently the data keep stacking up that this simple home measurement is pretty closely accurate for body fat percentage similar to a DEXA scan! And we all know that weight on a scale isn't the best parameter (but still useful, of course), and we also know that BMI is not the best, either (again, still useful). So, from here on out I think I'll keep tracking my waist/height ratio. However, I am torn between measuring at my naval or slightly above (like the WHO recommends). I am so short that I think the higher number is probably a better measure of my personal body fat level.

I listened to a great podcast yesterday that discussed a lot about this waist/height ratio and health outcomes - https://podcasts.apple.com/gb/podcast/p ... 1393265937

Eating
B: coffee w/cream
L: yogurt w/berries
D: will finish broccoli & probably leftover tri-tip unless someone else wants it

Moving
Have a nice walk planned to go up a nearby (small) mountain - the weather looks great so I'm hoping we have a nice view at the top. Flowerpup coming of course.

What I care most about today:
*cleaning out garage and going to the dump
*hiking
*starter feed
*weeding along sides of house
*pull-ups to failure
*checking email and continuing to put out small fires at end of quarter

*buy stepping stones and landscape fabric - possible but no pressure

Aww poor HappyHerder... My dog is just a big timid thing, he cowers at the vet too.

It's interesting about the hip waist ratio. I will delve into this more in my own journal but I did it with my two measurements using natural waist and directly over the navel and my results are identical to yours. .45 for natural waist and .48 for the navel. I never know which measurement to use either.

I like your category of what I care most about today. I hope you get it all done! Enjoy your walk!

I had a great day yesterday! The only bad thing is I tweaked my sacroiliac joint (while lifting a log) and during the night, the pain actually interrupted my sleep (that has never happened to me before, except maybe a migraine or something). This morning I'm feeling a bit better but being careful.

Eating
B: coffee w/cream
L: yogurt w/berries, maybe some walnuts
D: leftover burger (from last night) w/parmesan broccoli

Moving
I need to get HappyHerder out for a good walk today.

What I care most about today
*starter feed - it's starting to smell yeasty!! Only day 3!
*push down cabbage - it's starting to smell like saurkraut already! I'm shocked it's so quick.
*weeding on other side of house - I did great yesterday and Creator helped me a lot, too. -- YES! Did at least 3 hours of yardwork. Tomorrow I'll see about tackling the last side of the house.:-)
*push-ups to failure - yesterday with pull-ups went pretty well. - nope, didn't do this.
*order landscape fabric online - did get this done
*research best exercises for strengthening muscles around the SI joint.

Jen - I absolutely am feeling happier now that the quarter is over! It's quite the distinctive difference.

Liveitup - my dogs are such a big part of my life (and my cats, haha). I do much better with animals than people. Put like that, perhaps it's no surprise that I am growing weary of teaching humans.....

It's rainy today! Yesterday was SO nice, so this is a surprise. Yesterday I got a LOT of yardwork done, so that's good. Maybe today I'll clean bathrooms. But I do have a painting project in mind, although I want to be careful before diving into that. I'd like to paint the living room and kitchen. I like bright, bold colors. One kitchen wall is already a burnt yellow sort of color. It's been like that for 10 years and I still love it. I might like to do a bright blue (like Alene's door!) for one living room wall. I'm also considering doing one of my doodles ON THE WALL. That probably won't fly with Sexy. He's already quite confused by my "Wildflower Preserve" developing in the backyard.

My back (sacroiliac joint) is still hurting this morning, but luckily it wasn't painful while trying to sleep last night.

Eating
B: coffee w/cream, 2 slices of bacon
L: yogurt w/berries
D: lasagne
2 chocolate chip cookies for dessert
2 glasses of wine

I STILL don't know about my sabbatical, but it isn't looking good. Maybe next week I'll know for sure. Sexy and I have discussed having me take an unpaid leave of absence fall quarter if I really feel like I need a break (which I do...).

Challenger14 is not supportive of me quitting/reducing hours. He laments not getting to eat out as much, or go on vacations anymore, or buy the things he wants, or bla bla bla. It actually sickens me to hear him complain about how he won't get certain luxuries if I quit. And then he says ALL of his friends have two working parents and what would I do all the time if I weren't working. He's really insufferable. Makes me want to quit just to knock him down a notch.

Man auto! The selfishness of teenagers can be breathtaking sometimes huh? I remind my husband of that often when he loses patience with ours. Its totally natural for them to think of themselves and not others as they are figuring out who they are etc.. etc... However, I would be really frustrated as well. Also, happy parents are worth far more than any luxuries. Maybe he doesn't realize that yet.

I love your paint ideas! Our entire house is painted in bright colors... Our living room, front entry, and bedroom are all different shades of blue. People thought we were nuts but it's my husband's and my favorite color.

Glad your back is feeling a little better. Back pain is the worst. Sorry to hear challenger is not being supportive but he will survive and it’ll probably be good for him. It sounds like it’ll definitely be good for you & the rest of the family and that's all that really matters. Maybe he can get a job in a couple of years and make some spending money for himself.

Exciting about your starter & there’s another child that I’m sure would vote yes on you staying home. ;)

The waist/hip ratio thing is depressing to me. Ive always been an apple shaped plus i have really small hips so im just not going to worry about it.

Glad the dogs are going well. I decided that our family conversations are probably about the dogs at least 50 percent of the time. ☺️

Have a nice Sunday and i hope your back continues to feel better!

Pinkie - so cool about using bright colors in your house! I am inspired and just want to go with what I like to look at. To heck with what my friends and mother in law think about needing everything to be understate and ... gray..... :-)

Linda - Ha! Yes, my starter will be glad to have me around as much as possible. :-)
Oh, and it's waist:height ratio (not waist:hip) - which may or may not change your feelings on it. :-)

Sunday, June 21 - Father's Day!

And it's officially summer (I guess as of yesterday - and it RAINED ALL DAY) - but today is supposed to be nicer.

Auto, I hope you'll forgive me for not researching this and knowing your history more, but I noticed in your signature section that it looked like there was a major drop in weight from Oct. of 2018 to Oct. of 2019. May I ask what shifted? It's funny I should ask because when I've had drops and someone notices and asks me what I did, I know they mean the most recent thing, but I always say, "Well, the first thing I did X years ago was stick to three meals a day with no sweets on weekdays," because I think that that prepared me for every mod I've made, some of which have kind of veered pretty far away. But I'm still curious about your change.

And I believe somewhere you make reference to a woman therapist who has an interesting podcast? There could be several for all I know. Sorry!

I wonder if I get several members here to each write to Reinhard and ask him if there is any way he can adapt the program so that we go back to getting email alerts when there are new comments on threads we've been reading. Could that feature somehow make it easier for spammers? Because it was after he redesigned things when there was a lot of spamming going on that it went away. I miss that feature. I guess it doesn't say much for me that I cannot just come on the site regularly and look without depending on an alert... hey, just about all my bills get paid without my even knowing it anymore!

Yes auto go for it! People thought we were nuts for painting our "starter" house bright colors that wouldn't "sell well". Now we have been living in a house full of our favorite colors for 13 years and counting. We love it. :)

Congratulations to your husband for completing his one year of no alcohol!

Hi Oolala - NoS is the foundation in my life for my eating. Everything started from there, when I realized I actually needed to sit down and eat a "meal" rather than grazing all day. I love it and I love this forum, which gives a basic structure to my days.

However, for me it was health reasons that got me changing what was on the plate after 5 years of basic NoS (which I definitely believe halted what was becoming a rather speedy weight gain in my 30's). Prediabetes (and terrible post-meal fatigue because of it), pre-hypertension, a kidney stone, kidney function issues, arthritis. I finally decided to move away from processed foods in December 2017. I lost about 5 pounds by the end of spring 2018, then in the summer began eating more animal foods and reducing grains in my meals. That's when my body started feeling better. My joints are so much better that I RUN now. Running was painful for me even in college, so I've come to believe it actually is a food thing in my case. My gut, which had been problematic, seems to thrive on my daily yogurt. I used to need a nap mid-afternoon (of course I didn't usually get one and just dragged along) - and since changing my diet I don't have that afternoon slump anymore. My blood pressure is actually LOW now - sometimes I forget there was a time when it was elevated. My blood sugar is still a problem, although most doctors wouldn' tell me that anymore or catch the problem during a routine checkup. I just know what ideal blood sugars are, and mine aren't them.

In my case, I believe that I damaged my metabolism (specifically, my mitochondria) with decades of eating processed foods (particularly industrial seed oils and refined carbohydrates). I believe we all have different genetic susceptibilities to the level of processed food we can eat before some sort of health problem emerges. Because of my metabolic damage, I can't tolerate the same kinds of foods that any otherwise healthy person could. I believe that if I had never eaten processed foods throughout my life, I would not have prediabetes and I could eat more carbohydrates without problem. I don't think carbohydrates CAUSED my metabolic derangement, but because of my current damage, I don't get to play in the "carb sandbox" as much as people without this damage. I believe/guess my joint pain was either from processed seed oils (lots about how pro-inflammatory they are these days), or a more intrinsic sensitivity to grains. I don't really know. These sorts of things are always so difficult to suss out.

I have not done fasting at all - been tempted but never strongly. I listen to podcasts and read books about fasting ALL.THE.TIME. and it's kind of like watching animals in a zoo. I'm like, "hun. Interesting. But I don't like being hungry for long." I do think in my case it's good not to push my inner rebel. I'm at a good place with my food choices and mealtimes and I don't want to tempt fate by adding a layer of discipline that fasting would require. One place that I differ from you at this point (time may shift this!) is that I still prioritize protein. Although I completely respect the concept that protein restriction can increase lifespan in animal models, I personally believe that my muscle mass is my best organ of longevity. I don't want to risk, by protein restriction, losing one ounce extra than aging takes from me. But these areas of discussion are constantly changing and I love following the research. What's particularly fascinating for readers of the science is that we can read an argument and be convinced, but STILL not feel it's worth it to implement in our way of eating. In that sense, Reinhard is STILL the best. :-) We have to find a sustainable way of eating that checks most of the boxes about our beliefs. And then we need to get on with living!

Pinkie - I am really excited about my summer painting projects! I love blue, like you, but I also ADORE burnt yellows and burnt oranges. Those could go well together, right? :-)

125.something - ugh. I guess I had too many sourdough pretzels and chips

I was actually a little depressed yesterday because I could FEEL my body want to overeat on the sourdough pretzels I made. It was like a little switch flipped in my brain and drug addiction pathways were being followed. I was hoping the homemade product with the high level of sourdough starter in it, would not trigger that pathway. No such luck.

Eating
B: coffee w/cream
L: leftover sourdough waffles, plain and snacked out during a yard work break.
D: pork loin chop! Oh man I baked them just right. They are so juicy! Yay for me to finally cook something properly.
a large glass of wine

My sauerkraut is AWESOME!!!!!!!!! I'm thrilled that I can do this so easily.

Moving
Goal - morning and afternoon dog walks

What I care most about today
*walk/jogging
*pull-ups to failure
*weeding around blueberry bushes and strawberries - pulling out some sod to enlarge the area
*taking some things to Goodwill - holy cow.... the donation line was 2.5hours long and the attendant told me it's like that way all day every day! I guess I'll try again in a month, haha

Tuesday, June 23

Eating
B: coffee w/cream, sourdough muffins w/walnuts, blueberries, & butter
L: I guess I skipped this
D: grilled steak

Right now I have my sourdough starter discard in the oven for muffins - I added 2 eggs, melted butter, some blueberries, and walnuts! A powerhouse of nourishment. That probably only I will eat. The kids think these items are too yeasty-tasting.

What I Care About Today:
*work conference and student advising meetings
*pavers - I am sort of shocked that I did this project. From digging up the sod, to carrying the heavy pavers, to keeping everything (reasonably) level. I'm sort of thrilled with myself.
*enlarge strawberry patch (getting to this is probably overambitious) - um, yeah, didn't get to this. Maybe tomorrow.

In a week like this I don't worry much about formal exercise. I'm getting great workouts in the yard. :-) And the dogs are romping with me the whole time and so they don't get as antsy for regular walks.

Wow! What is the deal with goodwill do you think? Is it the time of year or people trying to help out? I haven't tried to donate anything since March so I don't know how it is here.

Yes blue and orange is one of my favorite combos! I am sure you could work burnt yellow in there too. :)

I think that it's just the donation drop-off at Goodwill that is insane right now. So many people cleaned out their houses during the quarantine and are eager to get rid of their stuff!

Wednesday, June 24

Eating
B: coffee w/cream, homemade sourdough/egg/walnut/blueberry muffin.
L: skipped
D: leftover steak and pork, a few strawberries from the yard
2 glasses of wine

I am feeling a bit discouraged about my sourdough. Here's why:
*my blood sugar goes up after 1 muffin to 140mg/dL. The muffin contained only the sourdough discard, egg, walnut, blueberry. Blood sugar went above 140 and then stayed around 120 for hours. It was weird.
*Worse than the high number, I get decidedly fog-headed. I swear it's like the yeast are affecting my brain. I have no idea exactly what is causing this but it's happened 3 days in a row.
*Worse than the brain fog, I'm exhausted and needing a nap. This is just like before I changed my diet (although it happens mid-morning instead of mid-afternoon!). Blood sugar fluctuations do a number on my energy level.
*Equally bad to the fatigue, I get a headache. It's almost like my sinuses got plugged up.
*I get some cramps in my gut. Now those might be worth riding out - perhaps in the long run it'd be good for me. But I eat yogurt every day without this problem, and sauerkraut occasionally with no issues. I'm thinking I'm still sensitive to the bread.

Now, why do I care? You'd think I'd just be like - OK, good try but no cigar, Auto. Face the music that you can't eat bread every day. But I really romanticized the loveliness of eating homemade sourdough and had already envisioned my new child (sourdough starter) living happily with me for the next 30 years, all the while with my blood sugar unaffected by this magical bread. Scientists are bias too! We want our experiments to work. I was listening to a podcast yesterday about how so many studies (in nutrition/heart disease/cancer) were not published because their results didn't match up with commonly held dogma. So the data was just ignored and not published. One author said (many years later when the work was finally published) that he had just been too disappointed with the results to publish them. Ouch!

What I Care About Today
*make and upload 1 YouTube video - done (actually 2 because the topic required a Part 1 and Part 2)
*fold laundry - did it!
*read book
*buy cream - yes!
*pick up CGM Rx at Costco - yep!
*mmmmmmmaaaaaayyyyybbbbbeeeeee dig to enlarge strawberry patch. :-) - um, nope but I did edge the grass around the patio

Sadly, I'm so completely tired that I'm feeling like the day is now going to be a waste. However, my list of desires today is not too long. I can probably bust those things out and then feel satisfied to sit on my laurels the rest of the day. Update - day fairly salvaged after about 2pm when I came down from my blood sugar coma.

Eating
B: coffee w/cream, a few scoops of my sauerkraut!! I can tell I'll want to eat this everyday (like my yogurt), so I'm going to make more jars.
L: yogurt w/berries, walnuts
D: (will be) lamb loin chops & my homemade sauerkraut (which is ready and delicious)

What I Care Most About Today
*ordering crushed rock - and figuring out how to get it to my house. I need 3 or 4 yards for the project I have in mind. - update - having trouble with the expensive delivery. Sexy and I think maybe we can get 1/2 a yard in my Toyota Highlander and just make multiple trips
*notes ready for next video - did NOTHING with this
*clean pantry - made some strides - ended up piddling around the kitchen, cleaned out my car, and reorganized my kitchen office space. :-/ I think I need to start looking up Ikea office solutions for my kitchen/office space that I'll probably be working out of for at least the next year.
*long walk w/HappyHerder -YES! Something I actually accomplished!
*prepare lamb loin chops properly (I need to look this up)

Pinkie, sauerkraut is not for everybody, lol! Challenger hates it, Creator and Sexy tolerate it. I like the sour flavors and the crunch. It's probably a very-much acquired taste.

I seem to have a romantic view of all things fermented. It must be the perfect satisyfing hobby for me that combines my scientific curiosity, my microbiology mind, and my desire to nourish my gut lining and hopefully never get anything dysbiosis-related like C.dif again.

123.something

Eating
B: coffee w/cream
L: yogurt w/berries
D: (will be) date night - I looked at the menu and I think I'll either order the Misto (meat, cheese, & olive platter), or the Caprese (roma tomatoes, mozarella, basil). They both look delicious and should not bother my blood glucose.

Moving

I need to clean the house from top to bottom today and tomorrow because my sister is visiting on Monday. The biggest part is helping Challenger get his room ready, because that's where we will have them sleep. He'll need to sleep in Creator's room, and I bet Creator will end up sleeping on our bedroom floor. :-)
Update - got a fair amount done. Both bathrooms deep-cleaned, pantry finally reorganized, entry finally washed down, kitchen appliances and cabinets finally wiped down, living room blankets washed and smelling good, etc. Didn't do much with Challenger's room but at least helped him get his laundry sorted and garbage toted.

I love all things fermented too especially sauerkraut and kimchi! Please tell me you have The Art of Fermentation? It’s just a fabulous book!

https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B0083 ... tkin_p1_i0

Your hike sounds so lovely and good luck with the cleaning! Have I mentioned how much i miss our cleaning lady?! On the other hand it’s saved us a lot of money which we promptly put into therapy for the girls. Well worth it too!

I hope you have a wonderful visit with your sister. Do you two generally get along?

Linda - I totally need to get that book! I read the description and got pretty excited! I especially love learning about how different cultures have fermented foods in order to extract more nutrients or preserve for the winter. Did I tell you I learned that sauerkraut actually has MORE vitamin C than the fresh cabbage? The microbes make it! It was taken on ships to prevent scurvy.

Jen - that's neat about how you now connect the need to clean with the joyful aspect of being with others socially. :-)

Challenger's room has got to be tackled today. He claims it's clean - oh, my, it's hilarious that he considers it clean right now. I just stick my head in and avoid going any farther. I feel like it's going to stink in there. It's fairly small and somewhat airless. I have a couple of fans for her and my niece to cool it off at night. You have to keep the door open to get good airflow, though, and that compromises privacy.

Hi, auto! I hope you’re enjoying your visit with your sister! I like sauerkraut from time to time. I should probably eat it more often, since I have some gut issues. Good job on your cleaning!

CG - Definitely sauerkraut is a good thing to try for gut issues! Especially if someone doesn't want/is unable to tolerate fermented dairy, sauerkraut is a good option. I truly believe that most cultures had some sort of fermented food in their diet pretty much daily, and we do well to try and copy that.

Hello dear Auto! It was so great to hear from you on my thread. I was saying to Linda, I was slightly afraid to come back to No S and find that all my buddies had moved on... ugh, what a thought! So happy you’re still here. And impressed that you are still doing your moderate eating routine. How is your reading going at the moment...have you discovered any good new self-help books or other interesting things? Like I said on my thread, I’ve decided to stop scorning diet books, because I do think that there are new generations of writers coming up who really do have new things to say. I’ve been reading Dr Joseph Luciani’s books on self-coaching - they are a bit verbose but contain helpful fresh viewpoints and tips...and on the diet front, Dr a Glenn Livingston and Dr Helen McCarthy have both written things that have helped me back to No S (such as insights on willpower and the nature of hunger). Dr Helen’s definition of willpower is particularly interesting: ‘having mental energy when you need it’.

Anyway...I now need the willpower to get out of bed and do some work. Great to catch up again! X

Octavia - that is a great definition for willpower! "mental energy when you need it!"

Interesting that you asked me about books - I just started a nutrition book called "Nourishing Diets". I have only finished the first chapter but I LOVE it. It also sparked me to do a bunch of additional research on the Australian Aborigines and how they managed the land of Australia so well. Their history is so sad, but I am thankful that a book like this gives them their due credit for their ingenuity and connection with the land. Anyway, each chapter describes the traditional diet and food culture of a different area of the world - Australian Aborigines, Native Americans, The Far North, The South Seas, Africa, Asia, Europe. The author has spared no details, lol. She is quite thorough.

Well, yesterday ended up an eating fest (after our visitors left). Definitely a reaction to using "willpower" and being on good behavior while having visitors.

On the bright side, even though I ate 3 pieces of pizza my blood sugar never went above 135mg/dL. Sometimes a meal like that sends me up to 165mg/dL and then plunges me down to hypoglycemic.

I feel a bit bad about my body right now. I don't feel as strong and healthy as I'd like to. I also still am trying to embrace and love my aging body (hair, skin, etc). And recently, I have developed some worn enamel spots on my canines that are yellow. I hate it and I'm starting to be self-conscious about my smile!!!! That's NEVER been an issue for me! I love to laugh and smile..... I was thinking about getting veneers but read they might not stay put since I got these spots due to teeth-grinding. Anyway, then that sent me down the sad path of thinking about doing things to "fix" ourselves. I know many on our forum have discussed the cultural pressure to lose weight. However, in my case I put that in a "self-care" category because losing weight can often be accompanied by greater energy, strength, fitness, and improvement of other health parameters such as blood pressure and blood glucose. But fixing ugly teeth? That's purely cosmetic! Like wearing make-up, covering up my gray, etc. So I find myself YET AGAIN in an existential crisis.

I sure live in my head, don't I?

Eating

L: yogurt w/berries
D: tuna melt, tortilla chips, 2 cookies.... not a great showing

Auto: I hear you on it being hard to get older!! I have freckles/age spots on my legs I’ve noticed lately that I’m not that thrilled about. And i feel like I look less toned than I did in my 30s, yet my clothes still fit about the same. Some days it feels like someone hit fast forward on aging since I turned 45

And also on the overdoing it that can happen when guests leave. I have the same problem at times!! It’s like guests can take too much out of me

Also hear you on the getting older! I turned 44 in April. I am always in a conundrum of how to present myself physically because I don't want to look older, but I also don't want to look like an older person trying too hard to look young. :D

Sorry to hear your teeth are bothering you. I think sometimes it's ok to do things that make us feel better about our appearance as long as it doesn't hurt us or give us health risks. I have a few things I am self conscious of too, (one side of my face being more wrinkly than the other) and I try not to let it bother me, but is hard. I remind myself that I have been alive for 44 years and I have done amazing things in that time, and my body is going to show that I have been alive that long, and it's ok. It's still a struggle sometimes though!
